We bring to the task all of our resources as one of the largest privately owned Christian companies, and a highly focused and hardworking team with decades of publishing experience. We publish books that are intelligent, thoughtful, and finely crafted— but not pretentious, condescending, or out of reach: conversationstarting books that take on real life from a Christian perspective. Practical books that speak to specific needs. Big-idea books. Compelling personal stories and life messages. “I choose to bring authors to Tyndale Momentum because I’ve seen how the team really gets behind the mission of each book. They are committed not only to producing a successful book, but to the larger purpose of partnering with authors and helping them to communicate their message. I know the people at Tyndale Momentum, I trust them, and I love that they take a personal interest in each author every step of the way. And I know that when I bring an author to Tyndale Momentum, that author is going to be well cared for—and so is the book.” This is why we’re Tyndale Momentum. d. j. snell president of legacy, llc Janis Long Harris janlongharris@tyndale.com janis long harris In her role as publisher, Jan leads the Tyndale Momentum team, drawing on extensive publishing experience as both an author and editor, as well as her background in radio and television, public relations, and fund-raising. Just as Dr. Kenneth Taylor was committed to inviting readers into the Father’s heart through biblical literacy, the goal of Tyndale Momentum is to make sure authors know they are valued members of the Tyndale Momentum family. We acquire books that we’re passionate about, from writers we believe in. We strive for excellence in every aspect of the publishing process to ensure that the finished book meets (or even better, exceeds) the author’s hopes. If your contract is semiannual, the first royalty period will close June 30, and the actual statement and check (if any is due) will arrive in late September. The second royalty period will end on December 31, and you can expect the statement (and check) to arrive in late March. If you have a quarterly schedule, the periods are as follows: Generally we will send out 50 copies, but we can send more if you know people who will get the word out about your book. Give the communications or marketing manager a call to discuss. • January through March—statement and check will arrive in June 2. do the books sent to my vip list earn royalties? • April through June—statement and check will arrive in September No. Books sent out for promotional purposes and books that you order at your author discount are non–royalty bearing. • July through September—statement and check will arrive in December 3. is there a certain background color that works better for author photos that are used on the book’s back cover? Tyndale’s Design department recommends a mediumgray background. 4. am i allowed to express any of my thoughts about the cover design? While the final decision for cover design lies with the publisher, the author’s feedback is given serious consideration. 5. how do i find out how my book sales are going? You may call or e-mail the communications manager. Important information you might want to consider . . . When your book is first released, it is difficult to know how many actual sales are taking place. We have two sales descriptors: sell-in and sell-through. Sell-in refers to the number of books that were sold to booksellers. The sell-through figure is the number of books that sell through to end users. Booksellers can return books to the publisher, so sell-in numbers and sell-through numbers can differ in the beginning of the book’s launch. Royalties are calculated based on the sell-through figure. Ultimately, the sell-through figure equals the sell-in number after all of the returns have been processed. 6. once my royalty advance is repaid, how soon can i expect to receive a subsequent royalty check? This varies, depending on your contract. Royalty reports are sent according to the terms set in the book contract. Some contracts stipulate a semiannual • September through December—statement and check will arrive in March 7. what if i don’t understand how the royalty statement should be read? is there someone i can speak to? Sometimes these are difficult to read. If you have problems, you can begin by calling or e-mailing the communications manager. If she can’t answer your questions, she’ll get you to someone who can. 8. what is the best (fastest, most efficient, etc.) way to order books? It is always best to e-mail your order to authororders@ tyndale.com. The reason this is the best way is that even if the author-designated customer service representative is out of the office, any e-mail that comes to that address is checked every day and answered. This can be important if you have a rush order or if you want to get the best shipping rate. You may also call the 800 number (800 -323-9400) and ask for Customer Service. When they pick up, ask for the author representative. It also is helpful if you know your account number, which you will receive when your “first” book is sent to you. But if you don’t know your account number, the representative can look it up. You can also call the communications manager, and she will give it to you for your records. 9. is there a place (or person) for me to mention if i have another book proposal? or should i wait to be asked? No, you do not have to wait to be asked if you have a great book idea! The best place to start the discussion is with the associate publisher, but any book team member can begin the process. Generally speaking, book proposals will be reviewed and evaluated based on previous book sales, but that is not the only criteria. continued on reverse... 10. are authors encouraged to visit tyndale for a tour? if so, can they purchase discounted books there? the schedule for upcoming conventions is as follows: We love hosting author visits! Please let us know if you are coming to the Chicago area, and we will arrange for a tour and a face-to-face meeting with the Tyndale employees involved in producing your book. If you want to purchase books during your visit, we can arrange that too. 2012: orlando, july 15-18 2013: st. louis, june 23-26 11. if i want to purchase tyndale books other than my own, how do i do that? do i get any discounts? 2015: orlando, june 28–july 1 Yes! Just like ordering your own books, the best way for you to order other Tyndale products is to e-mail authororders@tyndale.com. As a Tyndale author, you receive 50 percent off the retail price of any Tyndale product for as long as your book is in print. 12. how will i know what was done with my book from a publicity and marketing perspective? Your marketing manager will send you ad placements via e-mail and your publicist will let you know when your book has received a review. Additionally, four months after the release of your book, the communications manager will send out an e-mail with a spreadsheet summarizing activity related to your book. 13. is there a christian booksellers convention? can you tell me about it? There is a national Christian booksellers convention called the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS). It takes place annually in the summer months, normally in June or early July. If your book releases in the summer or fall season, it will be highlighted and promoted at ICRS. The convention location changes from year to year, and the format has also changed quite a bit over the last several years in terms of numbers of exhibitors, attendees, and book sales. In past years, major media were present for the purpose of requesting author interviews. However, with recent advances in technology, the number of attending media has been greatly reduced. For that reason, Tyndale does not feel it is necessary for authors—or even the entire book team—to attend the conference. But if the convention is near your home, and you’d like to attend, let the communications manager know. We would be happy to reserve a badge for you and schedule an appointment for you to meet with any members of the book team who will be attending. Normally, the communications manager will contact authors who live in the area of the convention to see if they have any desire to attend the show. 2014: atlanta, june 22-25 tyndale momentum directory book team Janis Long Harris, publisher – janlongharris@tyndale.com; 630.784.5328 John Van Diest, associate publisher at large – jvandst@aol.com Nancy Clausen, senior director of marketing – nancyclausen@tyndale.com; 630.784.5257 Yolanda Sidney, senior marketing manager – yolandasidney@tyndale.com; 630.784.5303 Sarah Atkinson, senior acquisitions editor – sarahatkinson@tyndale.com; 630.784.5458 Katie Fearnley, acquisitions assistant – katiefearnley@tyndale.com; 630.784.5290 Sharon Leavitt, senior communications manager – sharonleavitt@tyndale.com; 630.784.5354 editorial team Kimberly Miller, senior editor – kimmiller@tyndale.com; 630.784.5415 Dave Lindstedt, senior editor – davidlindstedt@tyndale.com; 630.784.5404 Bonne Steffen, editor – bonnesteffen@tyndale.com; 630.784.5329 Annette Hayward, assistant editor – annettehayward@tyndale.com; 630.784.5111 Brittany Buczynski, assistant editor – brittanybuczynski@tyndale.com; 630.784.5337 publicity team Todd Starowitz, senior public relations manager – toddstarowitz@tyndale.com; 630.784.5397 Maggie Rowe, senior publicist – maggierowe@tyndale.com; 630.784.5333 Katie Dodillet, publicist – katiedodillet@tyndale.com; 630.784.5275 Christy Stroud, publicist – christystroud@tyndale.com; 630.784.5389 Andrea Martin, publicist – andreamartin@tyndale.com; 630.784.5318 Erin Haft, publicist – erinhaft@tyndale.com; 630.784.5274 knox group publisher Doug Knox, senior vice president (contact Linda Vergara) Linda Vergara, group operations manager – lindavergara@tyndale.com; 630.784.5268 other important numbers and contacts Jake Schlossberg, customer service representative for authors: authororders@tyndale.com or 800.323.9400—ask for Jake Schlossberg Mark Taylor, president, Tyndale House Publishers (contact Bonnie Cain, executive assistant to the president: bonniecain@tyndale.com or 630.784.5260) tyndale house publishers, inc. 351 Executive Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188 630.668.8300 • 800.323.9400 • FAX: 630.668.3245 www.tyndale.com www.tyndalemomentum.com
