IT’S YOUR COMMUNITY – KEEP IT SAFE BE SAFE, WHILE RUNNING, WALKING AND JOGGING Q: What kind of things should be done before I go out for a run? A: Ideally, try to find a running partner. Also, it’s good to let someone know where you’re going, or write down where you plan to run and when you will return. Q: What are some other safety precautions that are wise? A: It’s always good to carry some ID and a cell phone or change for a phone call. Other smart things to do include taking a whistle along. And don’t wear any kind of earphones. This can make you unaware of your environment. Q: Are there areas that should be avoided? A: Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, lonely trails, and especially avoid unlighted routes at night. Another good practice is to run in familiar areas. Q: What are some things to keep in mind while on a run? A: Always stay alert. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable. Take note of who is ahead of you and who is behind you. When in doubt, follow your intuition and avoid potential trouble. If something seems suspicious, don’t panic, but run in a different direction. Q: What do you do if someone confronts you? A: Run toward busy streets, open businesses. Ignore any jeers and verbal harassment and just keep moving. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. Be friendly, but keep your distance and keep moving. Kerri Robertson, NLO Missing from photo: Jennifer Allegretto, CPO Co-ordinator After 10 years in the film and video game industry, Burnaby’s Todd Polich picked up paint brushes to pursue a 20-year dream to paint huge wildlife and nature murals to raise awareness about conservation and sustainability. To start, Polich contacted Kathy Wifp, the City of Burnaby’s Anti-Graffiti Co-ordinator, with a proposal to donate his time and artwork to beautify the community. Wipf showed him a wall on Royal Oak that would be his canvas. It was huge: 4,000 square feet. Since then, Polich has been commissioned to do three more murals in the Kingsway-Imperial and Edmonds neighbourhoods. He hopes they’re helping to bring a sense of pride and community back into areas that had had problems with vandalism and street crime. Wipf has nothing but praise for Polich. “Todd has worked tirelessly with removing graffiti along the Beresford corridor and other areas of Burnaby. All I have to do is mention that I am going out to paint out graffiti, and Todd volunteers his time to help”. Mail your entries to: NewsLeader Colouring Contest 7438 Fraser Park Drive Burnaby, B.C. Tip of the Month PREVENTION OF GRAFFITI IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS Tips for Property Owners: • Report and remove graffiti as soon as it appears • Install motion detectors • Install lighting SALUTE TO LOCAL BUSINESS The first time the premises of 3R Demolition Corp. on Beresford Street was hit with graffiti, co-owner Corinne Fulton just shrugged and covered the tags over with a fresh coat of paint. Fulton said their building’s location, right underneath the SkyTrain line, is appealing CORINNE FU 3R DEMOLITIONLTON to graffiti taggers, who want their petty CORP. vandalism as visible as possible. “But as fast as it’s on, it’s off,” she said. “I think that’s why [they haven’t been hit much lately], because the taggers can’t be bothered.” 3R Demolition, which provides environmentally-conscious demolition services, also makes a point to pick up litter and garbage, keep lights on, its yard fenced and gate locked. “You need to make it look like you care.” It helps that their staff work all hours of the night and day, so criminals never know when somebody’s going to come by, she said. And most importantly, staff at nearby businesses look out for each other. This is what makes for a good neighbourhood. ❝ You need to make it look like you care. • Plant prickly deciduous vegetation around the area of concern. Climbing vines work well on walls. • Remove ladders and containers that enable vandals to climb up to high places
