ou don’t get in trouble from the things you don’t know, but from the
things you know for sure that aren’t true. Looking around the passive
component industry, I find many companies struggling to make sense of
this North American market. Today’s challenge from boardrooms and executive suites is Show Me: Show me the results; that we hold the competitive
advantage; that our selling expenses are optimized; and that we are outperforming our peer group.
Y
We have to ask these questions about the year past:
• Could we have taken more market share or grown revenue and income an
other few percentage points?
• What did we know and when did we know it? Were our decisions made on
fact or fiction?
• Going forward, do we understand our current challenges and are we poised
to succeed?
If you succeeded in 2003 despite the things you didn’t know, count your
blessings; but are you still willing to take that approach? Likewise if last year
was not up to expectations, you may need EDS 2004 more than ever.
EDS is about exhibits and conferences, products and programs, but above
all it’s the industry’s week for finding and renewing sales and marketing partnerships. It’s where you can set your company’s compass for success in the
year ahead.
As presiding officer of the Electronic Distribution Show Corporation Board
of Directors for 2004, I’ve become particularly conscious of these issues. In accepting this volunteer presidency, I accepted the challenge of adapting a
67-year old institution to the new dynamics gripping our electronics industry.
My ECA colleagues, Richard Russell, TechSpray; Glyndwr Smith, Vishay
Intertechnology; and Carla Mahrt, Tyco Raychem Circuit Protection; as well
as the eight distributor and rep directors, the professional leaders of ECA,
NEDA, ERA, and the EDS staff, headed by Gerald Newman, have worked hard

Resonant circuits as found in high-voltage
applications such as electronic ballasts
for fluorescent lamps are exposed to
heavy thermal loads. EPCOS has specially
developed two new series of capacitors
with metallized polypropylene films for
these circuits. They cover the capacitance
range from 1.0 to 33nF with a maximum
ripple current capability of 700V RMS,
equivalent to 2000V. Pulse strength has
been increased to 6500V/µs.
The new film capacitors are available with
lead spacings of 10mm for capacitances up
to 12nF and 15mm for higher values.
The new design shrinks case size by
an average of 30% in comparison with predecessor types. The plastic cases, which
comply with UL 94V-0, vary in size from
4.0x9.0x13.0mm to 9.0x17.7x18mm, depending on capacitance and rated voltage. The
maximum operating temperature permitted
is specified at 110°C. All types in the new
series correspond to climate category
55/110/56 to IEC 68-1. The program comprises tolerance ranges of ±20% (M), ±10% (K),
±5% (J) and ±2.5% (H).

developed by EPCOS is based on improved

The new UltraCaps feature higher energy
and power density, lower equivalent series
resistance (ESR) and minimum losses.

from -35 to +70°C.
The flagship of the new generation is a cell
optimized for high energy density. It is
rated at 5,000F/2.5V and delivers the highest capacitance of any single cell on the
market. Weighing only 850g, this new
UltraCap is distinguished by a power density of 7.4kW/kg, energy density of
5.1Wh/kg and ESR of 250mΩ. It can be
charged and discharged with currents up
to 500A.
A further innovation is a single cell rated at
200F/2.5V and designed for maximum power density. Weighing only 55g, it features a
power density of 16kW/kg, energy density
of 3.2Wh/kg and ESR of only 2mΩ. It can be
charged and discharged with up to 50A.
This 200F UltraCap will also be available in
a modularized version from March 2003.
Further cells with capacitances of 600,
1,200, 2,700 and 3,600 F for a rated voltage of
2.5V are available.
The new UltraCap cells and modules will
be found in industrial electronics, automotive electronics and rail traction.

The EPCOS series includes a variety of
single-element CeraDiodes in size 0603,
which is one-third the size of most TVS
diode packages. A series of quad arrays in
0508 size is under development, with prototypes available. The CeraDiode spectrum
spans DC working voltages from 5.6 to 22V
and capacitances from 2 to 470pF.
EPCOS CeraDiodes provide bi-directional
protection, response times of less than
0.5ns, low leakage current and temperature
stability up to 85˚C. In addition, their stable
capacitance can be used as a filter for high
frequency noise, allowing the CeraDiode to
provide RFI filtering and ESD protection
with one component instead of several.
CeraDiodes are also easier to pick and
place than TVS diodes, minimizing failures
caused by misalignment. In addition, CeraDiodes cost up to 50% less than TVS diodes.

achieve accurate current-sensing in high
current circuits, SEI Electronics, Inc.
developed a broad line of cost effective,
ultra-low resistance surface mount resistors in industry-standard 0402 to 2512
sizes. Designated the CSR Series, these
resistors are capable of achieving low
resistance values from 0.001Ω to 0.500Ω,
in tolerances to +/- 1%. In the largest case
size 2512, the CSR is capable of handling
up to 2W of power at 70˚C. Utilizing precision metal foil and metallurgical processes, the CSR resistors exhibit extremely
low inductance of less than 0.2nH, making
them ideal for use in high frequency applications. The CSR series also offers TCRs of

Today, most applications in telecommunications, automotive, and industrial electronics
rely on switch-mode power supplies
(SMPS). Storage chokes in the form of
SMDs are key components of SMPS.
As well as being able to handle high
rated currents, they must have a low ohmic
resistance and minimal losses at high
frequencies.
For voltage converters with rated currents
up to 2A, EPCOS offers various chip inductors in sizes 1812 and 2220. Thanks to
laser-welded, lead-free terminals and
temperature-resistant materials, they can
be used at ambient temperatures up to 125°C
(or even 150°C in special cases). For higher
rated currents, customers can now choose
our new series with a footprint of 10x10mm,
available in shielded or unshielded versions
with insertion heights of 3 and 4.8mm.
Depending on version, components with
inductances up to 1,000µH can be implemented to handle rated currents up to 7.5A.
The new SMD power line chokes offer the
same high reliability at ambient temperatures up to 125°C as the tried and tested chip
inductors previously introduced and likewise have lead-free terminals. These
features make them ideal for all automotive
applications.

They make it possible to combine the lowest
ohmic resistance per winding with minimum dimensions. These new cores have
been developed in sizes ER 18, ER 23 and
ER 25. In conjunction with ferrite material
N 97, they provide optimum performance
with high saturation and lower power dissipation at frequencies around 200kHz. For
higher frequencies up to 1MHz, N 49 is the
material of choice. Material N 92, which
features particularly high saturation at temperatures around 100 °C, has been specially
developed for output chokes with high DC
magnetic bias. In comparison with ELP
cores, ER cores feature superior EMC properties, because part of the winding is
shielded from the core and thus causes less
interference.

continuously refreshed plating solution
provided by a fully controllable pump, which
is the only moving part in the machine. SBE
Platers are available in a wide variety of
versions: from small manual lines to fully
automatic large production lines.
The non-foaming CeramiStan BR plating
solution, operating at 4.0 to 5.0pH, is a pure
tin-plating solution designed for use in the
SBE equipment, as well as in traditional
barrel plating lines and the RFT Plater. The
process produces a satin finish tin deposit
with excellent solderability characteristics.
It is also less aggressive to LTCC ceramics
and termination pastes than other near neutral pH processes.

Secondly, picture yourself among the Industry’s best and
brightest. In the Board’s analysis of what makes EDS successful, we recognize two basic measures – how many companies are present and whether their experience is positive.
With many “household name” companies merged, the continual inflow of “new manufacturers” is particularly important to keep EDS vibrant and alive. These “new manufacturers” may be start-up companies or established
manufacturers from offshore (more and more the case)
seeking to enter the North American marketplace, or wellestablished manufacturers challenged by the difficult
economics of selling in North America, now seeking to

As it happens, the first category of new companies pretty much takes care of itself. New to this marketplace, they
need sales representatives to handle the care and feeding
of distributors and customers. Nowhere else on this continent can they interview so many outstanding sales professionals as at EDS.
So the real job is to persuade well-established manufacturers whose distributor networks are in place that EDS
makes economic sense. Murata’s experience is positive, because of the quality of the individuals we see, the time
savings realized by meeting with several distributors at one
time in one place, and the opportunity to have many of our
sales representatives participating in our distributor
sessions. To accomplish the same during the course of the
year would be prohibitively expensive. If your company has
been absent from EDS, isn’t it time to reconsider the merits?
After all, you wouldn’t want to be the one company in 2004
that didn’t know!
Lastly, picture yourself in trouble, trying to explain at
year-end why it didn’t happen. Don’t be one of those companies that will enter the twilight zone. Whether your
