XXIX No. 2 Aus.tin TX THE GENEALOGY COLLECTION OF TEXAS STATE LIBRARY The Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building at 1201 Brazos in Austin is readily identifiable-bythe six large flags that wave over its western entrance and by the six'mosaic seals that may be seen from San Jacinto Street. These represent the six governments that have held sovereignty of Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States. The Genealogy Collection of the Library is open 8-5 Tuesday through Saturday, A limited number of free parking spaces (some reserved for the handicapped or volunteer work@rs) may be found, for which a parking permit is required every day except Saturday. Qther divisions of the Library and the Archives are open 8-5 Monday through Friday. When you enter the foyer with its fascinating historical mural and many interesting showcases, th@.'A?chives will be on your right and the Genealogy Collection on your left, the north end of the building. Incidentally, if you should forget and go to do genealogical research on a Monday, you could profitably spend the day in the Archives, examining Confederate pensions, Texas muster rolls, dozens of other kinds of manuscripts, and several hundred books. After you register in the Genealogy Collection, you will find a staff of skilled, friendly professionals ready to help you find what you need (but Sorry! they don't have time to listen to your whole family history!) The Supervisor is Miss Jan Carter (B.A. in History, M.A. in Library Science) who has been specializing in genealogical librarianship for seven years. Her able assistant, M s . Colleen Munds, has nine years' experience in the field, and has conducted courses in genealogy. She holds a B.A. in History. The third member of the staff, David Baskin (B.A. in History) is the Genealogical Researcher, with eight years of experience. He also offers gracious assistance, even to patiently helping one thread film on a reader! These efficient people preside over some 20,000 books in open stacks, most of them being in some strictly genealogical category: birth, death, probate or marriage records; land records, cemetery inventories, published family histories. But if there should be a black sheep in your party, one who has not been bitten by the genealogy bug, he/she may choose to pass the time in the Texas Collection, the room where the Texana is of a more entertaining nature. Rivaling the book collection in popularity is the Microfilm Collection - approximately 25,000 reels, including all U.S. censuses released to date, and all Soundex indexes for Texas that have been filmed, plus a few for other states. Miss Carter, as well as previous librarians, has always been vigilant about acquiring every printed census index that is advertised, also. Considering them a vital adjunct to the filmed censuses, the Genealogy Collection supervisor is making a valiant effort to purchase all the printed indexes as they are published. But the recent slump in the oil industry has severely cut the State's income, with the result that library budgets have been curtailed. Fearing that if these very expensive books (ranging from $200 each to a $900set per state) were not purchased as soon as issued, they might not be obtainable later, Austin Genealogical Society founded "Friends of the Texas State Library Genealogy Collection by AGS." Contributions to this dues-less, meeting-less, roster-less auxiliary group are added to the cash donations placed in the "glass 53 Vol. XXIX No. 2 AGS Quarterly Austin TX barrel" (jar) kept on top of the microfilm filing cabinets. One patron confided to a staff member that he puts a dollar in the barrel every time he finds a relative on the census! Friends who do not visit the Library in person are welcome to send checks to "F.O.T.T.S.L.G.C. by A.G.S.", Box 1507, Austin TX 78767-1507. Besides the census, the Collection also contains microfilm of Texas County Tax Rolls (dating from county formation to 19791, parts of the Draper Manuscripts, the Nacogdoches Archives, the National Archives Index to Confederate soldiers entering service from Texas, the Nuevo Leon Mexican Archives (in Spanish), and many other subjects that might be of interest to a genealogist. To make these available to patrons, there are 16 readers, a microfiche reader, and a reader-printer for making copies of desired pages from microfilm. Other conveniences include reference books (which will be made available by the staff on request), two photocopying machines, a paper cutter, and a change-maker. The latter are in the room entered by the door next to the card catalog. Here may be found Indexes to Birth and Death Records in Texas - nominally 1903-1973, but records were not consistently kept in the early years. Also in this room are four cabinets of Vertical Files. Researchers over the years have deposited family data here, but until recently they have been under-used because it was rather difficult to locate items in the files. However, Ms.. Munds has now completed the tremendous task of sorting them out and putting the papers in neat new folders with readable labels. The cards on the drawers show "V.F. GEN" to differentiate the Vertical Files of the Genealogy Collection from those to be found upstairs. That code is followed by letters of the alphabet (A Abbreviations, Adoptions B - Black, and so on) up to "Family History." The bulk of the holdings are in this category, so you will find "V.F. GEN F.H. 7 Abel" through the surname Zollmf, and then the rest of the alphabet without the F.H. There is an index on top of the cabinets, but in order to better acquaint the public with this sometimes-fabulous resource in the Genealogy Collection, Barbara and Jerry Goudreau have graciously reproduced it for publication (following this We are deeply indebted to these long-time AGS members for this voluntary article). service, and are eagerly anticipating their next project: Barbara is extracting other surnames found in the Family History folders (brides' names will be especially helpful), and we will run her list as space permits in this quarterly. Patrons of Texas State Library, Genealogy Collection, will find it compares favorably with all others, and is friendlier than most! If you want to get in touch, the phone is Area Code 512 463-5463, and the mailing address is Box 12927, Capitol Station, Austin TX 78711. - ..* Terns Archives and L i h y BuiZding 54 0 cc l . . e VERTICAL FILE HOLDINGS IN THE GENEALOGY COLLECTION, TEXAS STATE LIBRARY Georyia - Fayette Co. Since the attractive volumes (which include many heirloom pictures) have the names of only the current land owners in their indexes, AGS Quarterly is attempting to remedy that deficiency, as space permits. Instead of page numbers, we group the names by their counties (which cover only a few pages each, and are in alphabetical order), assuming that researchers will want to read all about their ancestors' neighboring relatives and friends. Apologies are offered if some surnames are wrong - sometimes the narratives are hard to interpret as to generations - whether Tom, Dick and Mary are the children of the founder or of his daughter. And, since these books use parentheses to indicate maiden name, nickname, previous married name, or future married name it is sometimes impossible to determine just what is meant7 In AGS Quarterly, the usual genealogical practice is followed: Maiden names in parentheses. If a maiden name is unknown, we put three dots in parentheses; nicknames are in quotation marks; editorial suggestions in brackets; "pic" indicates that there is a picture of family members or buildings on the given page. San Antonio: Trinity University fress @ 1987. Hardbound, dust jacket, printed in Century Old Style typeface Crom the author's disks. 6 x 9"; pp. 303 + xx; photographs, maps, notes, bibliography, index. Moses Austin: His Life is more than a biography of one man. It is a microcosmian history of the economic forces and events that gave so much impetus to the Western settlement trend in North America, especially with reference to the colonization of Texas. The book is superbly written from both informational and entertainment standpoints. Dr. Gracy has a gift for imparting essential facts in an interesting fashion, creating a book that is a valuable sourcebook for scholars as well as being eminently readable by the general public. Dr. Gracy, professor of library science and holder of the Governor Bill Daniel Professorship in Archival Enterprise at the University of Texas at Austin, devoted seven years to researching the life of Moses Austin, father of the better-known Stephen Fuller Austin. His research, conducted in the archives of both the Old a.nd the New World, was commissioned by the John W. and Mary Austin Beretta Foundation of San Antonio. In pursuit of the project, David Gracy unearthed long-hidden sketches (small maps), photographs, and data on lead mining, smelting, et cetera; letters and articles pertaining to the financial condition and panics of the United States; as well as letters revealing the mores of an educated, interesting, once-prosperous family that eventually had to face the humiliation of bankruptcy. The character of Moses Austin the optimistic entrepreneur - the sanguine, dauntless plunger who "threw good money after bad," as the saying goes, pervades the book, arousing sympathy for his wife and other relatives. Texans should be very thankful that his son, "the Father of Texas", was more level headed! Pioneers are innately somewhat unconventional men, not content with the status quo, and it is to their daring to venture into new places that we owe the spread of civilization. We salute Moses Austin who dared to attempt the colonization of Texas (whatever his motives), and Stephen F. Austin who dutifully (if unenthusiastically at first) carried out his father's plan. Like the cloud of turmoil, phrenetic effort and fluctuating emotions that surrounded Moses Austin most of his life, a thunderstorm of conflict arose over his bones after his death. Dr. Gracy9 in the Epilogue of the book, gives a fascinating, detailed, and definitive account of the struggle to get Austin's remains reinterred with honors in the Texas State Cemetery. The citizens of Potosi, Missouri (his last place of residence) belligerently refused to permit such action, which had been planned as a highlight of the Texas Centennial celebration in 1936. The furore did have one beneficial result: a Moses Austin Memorial Society was organized in Missouri to rescue his grave from the neglect that presaged oblivion in the not-too-distant future. This handsome book is embellished by the statue of Moses Austin on the dust jacket and autographs of the principals on the end papers. The typeface is legible, beautiful, and appropriate to the book's time span. The only consistent error this reviewer found is the lack of a hyphen in great-grandfather. 76 AGS Quarterly Vol. XXIX NO. 2 Austin TX Profuse end notes cite specific sources corroborating nearly every statement, and the 17-page Bibliography minutely locates each source. The admirably legible Index covers both personal and place names, as well as a wide range of topics from which one could easily give a book review or construct an outline of the book. Anyone who is a lover of Texas history or is planning to write a biography would be well advised to read Moses Austin: His Ltfe. It is a book that I find myself returning to, time after time! --He H.R. HISTORY OF BASTROP COUNTY, TEXAS, BEFORE STATEHOOD by Kenneth Kesselus, 1986. Published by Jenkins Publishing Company of Austin; available from Bastrop Stationers, Drawer Z, Bastrop TX 78602 - $23.50 (including tax, postage and handling). Hardbound, 6 x 9", pp. 329 + xxii. Maps, photographs, 7 Appendixes, Bibliography, full-name Index. ..., In the Foreword to this History of Bastrop County John H. Jenkins the eminent writer, editor and publisher of Texana, summarizes the importance of Bastrop County as "a microcosm of Texas in its key years," and concludes that in this book "Ken Kesselus has not only recorded, he has enlightened." This reviewer feels that every reader will heartily concur. The author was born in Bastrop, graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, and received his Master of Divinity from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in 1972. After serving a church in Pearland, Texas, for several years, he returned home to be rector of Calvary Episcopal Church and chairman of the Bastrop Sesquicentennial Committee. Anglican "parsons" are traditionally local historians - perhaps they share a common gift for eliciting the truth from their parishioners! Lovers of Texana can be thankful that the Rev. Mr. Kesselus has followed in that tradition and researched in depth to produce a superior chronicle of the basic facts, events, and people of Bastrop County before statehood (19 February 1846). The earliest pertinent record found was the diary of an expedition led by Dom Doming0 Teran de 10s Rios and Father Manzanet (also known as Fray Damian Massanet) in 1691, which mentions the discovery of a forest of pine trees and the search for a crossing of the Colorado River in present-day Bastrop County. The countyls physical features, earliest inhabitants (native and foreign), and roads are described; e.g. the Old San Antonio Road and the Gotier Trace. Numerous clearly drawn, uncluttered maps are a godsend to the reader. In discussing the settlement of Bastrop County, Mr. Kesselus sheds much light on Austin's colonies in general. Especially welcome is hisexplanation of the confusion that has long existed about the name Mina, not only as applied to Bastrop but to Matagorda as well. He tells us that in 1826 Stephen F. Austin created a District (Precinct) of Mina "on the Colorado" which extended as far downriver as the town of Matagorda. In 1831, both the Precinct of Bastrop and the Precinct of Mina (whose seat of government was Matagorda) were officially in existence. In 1834, the lower part of the precinct was renamed Matagorda (for the town), and the ' 77 AGS Quarterly Vol. XXIX NO. 2 Austin TX upper part became Mina - for logical reasons set forth in the text, as well as why its present name is Bastrop. Another enlightening detail is found in the description of the floating of cotton down the Colorado from Bastrop to Matagorda in the 1840s. The flatboats (log rafts) were also traded for sugar and such commodities at the destination, then the boatmen returned horne on horses which a "land engineer" had herded downriver for that purpose. Enriched with many names, significant documents, tables of land grants, court records, and descriptions of encounters with Indians, the book serves as an encyclopedia of the region presented in readable style. But -- it would have benefitted from the services of a ruthless, unrelated proofreader to weed out such gaffes as 1939 for 1839 (p. 253), misspelling of camaraderie (p. 2411, Ashbell Smith (p. 303), San Antonio, Seige of (p. 326), Fruits and Flowers from the Wilderness for Flowers and Fruits in the Wilderness (p. 811, etc. etc. Despite these little flaws, History of Bastrop County, Texas, Before Statehood is a handsome book that anyone interested in the region - or a picture of Texas as a whole in that era - will enjoy reading and consulting frequently. No doubt Mr. Kesselus's follow-up volume is equally valuable for its period. --H.H. R. THE 1787 CENSUS OF VIRGINIA compiled by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman Love; published by Genealogical Books in Print, 6818 Lois Drive, Springfield VA 22150. Set: $200 + $4 postage + tax for Virginia residents. @ 1987. Pages: Vol. 1 - 1-784 + xiv; Vol. 2 - 785-1481; Vole 3 (Index) - 1483-2022. Map; Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, Introduction. Like several books that are called censuses, The 1787 Census of Virginia was based on tax rolls, but it is more nearly a census than others. In 1786 a law was passed mandating the personal property assessments used in this work: "An Accounting of the Name of Every White Male Tithable Over 21 Years; the Number of White Males between 16 & 21 Years; the Number of Slaves Over 16 & those Under 16 Years; together with a Listing of their Horses, Cattle h Carriages; and also the Names of all Persons to whom Ordinary Licenses and Physician'.s Licenses were Issued." - to quote the subtitle. Therefore, all white male adults are named, not just the heads of households. If the 1787 tax lists are not extant for a county, the compilers used those of 1786 or 1788, and picked up some names from signers of petitions found in the courthouse, and others from lists of insolvent males. The frontispiece is a reproduction of the prescribed "Form of return of taxable property to be made by the commissioners." Property owners were required to make a list of their property and swear to its a c c u m e q after which the commissioners entered it on the form. Warning: In the illustration, ditto marks mean "None," not "Same as above", as may be seen by checking the addition. Before using the book, it might be handy to photocopy the form because column headings are not repeated on each page. Besides names, this book gives data appearing in five columns of the form: Number of white males above 16 and under 21; Blacks above 16; Blacks under 16; Horses, mares, colts & mules; and cattle. Under "Notes" may be found information such as carriages owned, ordinary [tavern] license, physician's license. Pictures of different types of carriages are an added bonus. 78 AGS Quarterly a Vol. XXIX NO. 2 Austin TX'. This book is equipped with an extraordinary number of entities in its front matter, all of which should be carefully read before trying to use it. There is high praise from the Virginia State Archivist in the Foreword. There are definitions of terms, names of counties covered in the book (including some now in Kentucky and West Virginia), as well as independent cities. Nine or ten reasons for tax exemption, not just the usual "age Or infirmity,"are cited. Of exceptional value to the reader is a map showing counties in existence in 1787 outlined in black, with red boundaries around counties created since then, or boundary changes. A heading (showing which list of what county, appearsbelow) at the top of each page is very helpful, also. Enumeration began on 9 March 1787 and included a tax on whitelmales 21 and up, but this was repealed 12 Oct 1787, so it may not be included on all lists. The 539-page index is excellent: Each spelling for a surname on a line alone, with a new line for each given name, an extravagance few publications can afford. Where spelling was in doubt, a question mark was inserted. There are 2,500 cross references, such as "Bates - see Baits - see Bales." This fine book is a MUST for everyone with ancestral ties to early Virginia, CHURCH RECORDS OF THE PIONEER GERMAN FAMILIES OF BERLIN, TEXAS, EBENEZER LUTHERAN CHURCH translated by Jack Autrey Dabbs and Edward C. Breitenkamp. Published by Family History Foundation, 1985. Hardbound; 83 x 11"; pp. 292 + vi; Preface, Introduction, Index, Map. This reviewer was surprised to discover that this compilation of church records of German families in a tiny town, formerly in Washington County, Texas, is a really fascinating book, interesting even to many who have no German connections. Apologies are offered to Dr. Dabbs, a faithful member of AGS, for the tardiness of this review, but the book was placed on the library shelves just after one of our quarterlies went to press, and by the next issue I had just plain forgotten to look for it. Between its appropriately white leatheroid, gold-embossed covers, the book contains a wealth of information found in Ebenezer Lutheran Church's record books I, I11 and IV. Book 11, the records of the 1860s, unfortunately was burned some years ago. Baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials have been re-organized into family groupings - 67 pages of detailed family records in alphabetical sequence that would brighten the heart of any researcher. Some give age, place and cause of death; names of survivors, parents, and pastors. In some instances, the compilers have inserted cross references to sections of baptisms, deaths, etc. in chronological order. A l s o included are lists of communicants, pastors'. annual reports, and financial records such as gifts of firewood for the church and of money for missions. In the Preface and Introduction, many interesting explanations are made. Readers are warned that a child with three or four baptismal names may not have been called by the first one. Some small towns given as places of origin "defy detection on the map," but the translators offer suggestions. A map of the German Empire ca 1871 locates 1 6 spots from whence, according to these records, one or more persons emigrated to Washington County me-1860. 79 AGS Quarterly Vol. XXIX No. 2 Austin TX A chart of the German alphabet and an explanation of the differences between German Script and Roman Script will interest those who have at least a smattering of the language. Some vowels with umlauts appear in the book, but some have been transcribed as ae, oe and ue. A listing of variant spellings of both surnames and baptismal names should be extremely helpful to those looking for German ancestors. And finally, like a generous dab of whipped cream on a delicious strudel, the editors have included a 75-page detailed index OF full personal names and abundant place names. Would that similar dedicated souls would devote so much effort to publishing the records of all early churches. Well done, Dr. Dabbs and Mr. Breitenkamp! EARLY EAST TENNESSEE MARRIAGES, Byron Sistler & Associates, Inc., Box 120934, Nashville TN 37212; 2-volume set (404 pp. each) $96 + $2 shipping & handling. Early East Tennessee Marriages covers the ante-bellum ,marriages of 20 counties, the earliest being in 1780 (Washington County) and the latest in 1880, as they decided to finish the book when a county's marriage book extended beyond 1861. Almost all surviving original marriage book records are on microfilm at Tennessee State Library in Nashville, and contain much more data than is included in this Index. The format in the Sistler Grooms book is: Surname (in alpha sequence), given name; bride's given name, surname; date of license; date of solemnization (when it is recorded); one- or two-letter abbreviation of county. The Brides book has identical information in reverse order. When there are many grooms of the same name, a man's position is determined by the alphabetical order of his bride's first name, but in the Brides book, a particular Smith, Mary is located by her groom's surname. Although their policy is not stated, the Sistlers appear to use the out-moded month-day-year formula for dates: 10-26-1866. Being computer-indexed, this book places Jos. S. before Joseph, of course, contrary to the centuries-old rule. There is an axiom about "mind over matter," but now we have machine prevailing over mind! Typewriter typeface is used, rather pale, but more readable than many indexes produced by this firm. The books are enhanced by a map of the counties covered and the time span of each county's records. Early East Tennessee Marriages serves a useful purpose as an index to encourage the reader to seek out further information that may be on a marriage record, such as parents, bondsmen, officiant, and sometimes personal details. KERR COUNTY, TEXAS, DEATH RECORDS, 1903-1960, compiled by Gloria Clifton 'Dozier; 1988; published by Heritage Books, Inc., 1540E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 3000, Bowie MD 20716. Perfect binding, 8$ x 11"9 pp. v + 216 [advertised] unnumbered pages; $25 + $2 shipping and handling per order. a Kerr County, Texas, Death Records, 1903-1960 includes 1870 and 1880 Mortality Schedules and a list of about 20 death records dated between 1907 and 1958 which are - 80 Vol. XXIX NO. 2 AGS Quarterly Austin TX. locked away from the public in a vault in the courthouse. Ms Dozier calls them "Delayed Death Certificates" but does not explain the term. Eighty-one years is a lengthy delay, as nobody can deny! Information in this helpful book is set forth in eight columns: Book No., Name [in alphabetical order], Death [in figures representing month, day, year], Age, Born [state], Lived [state or Texas town of residence before going to K e n County], Died [Kerr County town], Buried [town or cemetery, the latter, in Kerr County, being identified in the Foreword]. This book should be an extremely valuable source for death data in that area and time frame. Its appeal is not limited to Kerr Countians alone; recorded are deaths of emigrds from Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, the "Phillipine Islands", and virtually every state in the USA. The reader may notice an appalling number of misspelled Texas town names some obviously a slip of the fingers (understandable in a typing task of this scope), but the consistent appearance of such bloopers as "Witchita Falls" and "New Brunfelsn cannot be readily excused. Anyone who undertakes a project of this nature should provide himself with an alphabetized list of Texas towns. Insufficient proofreading is also indicated by errors in alphabetizing the surnames, and by the occurrence of "complied" for "compiled" and of "Morality Schedule for 1870" in the Foreword. (The last-mentioned should make rather interesting reading.) But -enough of this nit-picking! This reviewer recommends Kerr County, Texas, Death Records as a splendid opportunity to search for the death of Great-aunt Agatha who just disappeared from family records. Because of its climate, people have gone to Kerr County from all over the world, seeking a cure for tuberculosis (a word that was only whispered in some circles), and many seem to have so exhausted their financial resources that there was nothing left for shipping the body back home when they died. Thus there is no stone for them in the family cemetery plot where one would expect to find it. The comprehensive statistics furnished by this book will enable the researcher to identify individuals with assurance. - ... SCRAPS OF EARLY TEXAS HISTORY by Mary Sherwood Helm; Appendix by Elias R. Wightman. Originally published 1884; reprinted 1987 by Eakin Publications, Inc.; edited and annotated by Lorraine Jeter. $10.95 ($11.52 by mail to Texans) from publishers, Box 23069, Austin TX 78735. Hardbound; ca 5% x 9"; pp. m i x +120. Contents (a summary of the book and of each chapter separately), Preface, Acknowledgments, Appendix, Endnotes, personal and place-name Index, Photographs and Drawings. This attractive little volume is a welcome reprint of a Texas classic, a capsule of earliest Texas history through the Battle of San Jacinto as perceived by a female colonist at the time and recorded nearly 50 years later. The first third of the book is poorly organized, and gets off to a slow start with a superficial account of the causes and events of the Texas Revolution. Bearing in mind that the principal medium of communication at that point was hysterical 8 81 AGS Quarterly Vol. XXIX No. 2 Austin TX rumor, it is small wonder that some of Mrs. Helm's "scraps" of history are just far enough off the mark to set a modern historian's teeth on edge. For example, she makes the statement (pa xvii) that Stephen F. Austin was kept in a Mexican dungeon for two years "in darkness without.communicationwith his friends and no reading matter." Yet the endnote purporting to be the source of this refers to Yoakum's History of Texas 1:315, which states: he remained in close confinement three months." [He was in Mexico City over two years, yesI but "in durance vile" only a short Lime - under a sort of house arrest most of the time.] a But of far greater importance to modern readers of Scraps of Early Texas History are the descriptions of her travel experiences: down the Allegheny, Ohio and Mississippi rivers; from New York to New Orleans, thence to Matagorda; from Galveston to the mouth of the Brazos; and other journeys overland. These give the reader a vivid picture of the perils of travel in those days. Sharing the style of many 19th-century Fiters, Mrs. Helm's verbiage is emotionally charged and her viewpoint unabashedly b+ased - which may strike the reader as either annoying or charming. Her incomplete sentences and superfluous commas were a source of minor irritation for this reviewer, but not nearly as annoying as the editor's persistent reference (in the endnotes) to A Texas Scrap-Book by D.W.C. Baker as Baker's Scrapbook (in italics as if Baker's were part of the title). An amusing typo on page 110 gives an author's name as James Cook See. (The period should have been after Cook.) Similarly, on 113, the omission of a period and of "John Henry" makes it appear that Dr. Hunter Brown wrote a History of Texas. Submitted by Juanita Dodgen 1008 Stewart Cove Austin TX 78734. [Editor's Note: This was recei Ed j 1st before AGSQ "went to press," but is too pertinent to be omitted, even though it had to be placed after the Ancestor Listing Section. This editor agrees that many census indexes have been foisted on the public in a deplorable state, both as to errors and to legibility. I hastily scanned the first two pages of A Practical Guide to the "Misteaks" Made in Census Indexes and noticed two incomplete sentences, which leads me to conclude that its author is scarcely better trained than the indexers he i s criticizing or defending. D.L. Kent noted that he did not intend to criticize the State Library, A.G.S., or anyone who donated these indexes, "since they were all that was available." All we can do now is take these indexes with a grain of salt the size of a hen egg and use our imaginations to find the names we are searching for. I should think there is a ready market for books that fill in the deficiencies that exist in the present indexes, supplementing the ones so ably pointed out in the above article, thanks to D.L. Kent.] 148 ! PURPOSE: Austin Genealogical Society was organized in 1960 as a non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Texas. Its purposes are to collect and preserve genealogical and historical information about the people of Texas, particularly pertaining to the City of Austin and to Travis and surrounding counties; to instruct and assist members in genealogical research; and to publish public and private records of genealogical interest. Gifts and bequests to Austin Genealogical Society are tax-deductible. MEMBERSHIP is open to all upon payment of annual dues: $12 per individual, or Family Membership at $14 for two in the same household, entitling them to one copy of each Quarterly, and two pages apiece (a total of four pages for $14 whether one [See AGS QUARTERLY below.] or two persons) in the Ancestor Listing Issue (June). DUES FOR THE ENSUING YEAR ARE PAYABLE on or before the FIRST DAY OF JANUARY each year. Members who have not paid by February 1st will be dropped from the membership roll and will not receive the March Quarterly until dues and charge for mailing separately are paid. Send payments to AGS Treasurer at 3702 Palomar Lane, Austin TX 78727. SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE QUARTERLY are same as membership dues. All are on a calendar-year basis; if you join late in the year and pay the full amount, you are entitled to back quarterlies for that year --if they are available (we order few extras), but there will be a $2 fee for mailing them. MISSING COPIES. If your Quarterly does not reach you by the 10th of April, July, October or December, notify the Society at Box 1507, Austin TX 78767-1507 (but Exchange Quarterly Chairmen should use TEXAS STATE LIBRARY address given on inside front cover).
