The objectives of the IMU are: To promote international cooperation in mathematics; To support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other international scientific meetings or conferences; and To encourage and support other international mathematical activities considered likely to contribute to the development of mathematical science in any of its aspects, pure, applied, or educational. The term of office for members is four years. The South African Mathematical Society (SAMS) and the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) may re-submit the names of their respective members at the end of the first term of office. For the sake of continuity, each of the Associations shall replace at most two members at a time. The South African National Committee for the IMU consists of nine members.
