PREFACE
Hamdard foundation Bangladesh is founded by Hakim Md. Yousuf Haroon
Bhuiyan.
This foundation contributes and donates the individuals or
institutions or organizations engaged in social development, charitable
service and welfare for the distressed. Hamdard Unani Medical college &
Hospital,Bogra; Hakim said Eastern Medical college & Hospital, Dhaka;
Hamdard public college, Dhaka, and the proposed Hamdard University is
founded & Financed by this foundation. Free medical camps & non formal
educational projects are also provide through this foundation. The
foundation also helps people affected by natural disaster, sanitation program
for public health and other social problems.

Introduction:
Diseases come from the beginning when men come on this earth, those days
men depend on herbs to cure. There was no Hakim or Kaviraj or modern
doctor or Hospital. So, they look for the way of survival in nature. In this
way they discover the medicinal plants. The system of treatment by nature is
named Unani/Ayurvedic/Indigenious/Traditional system of treatment. The
history of this medicine is as ancient as human civilization. Muslim
scientists pulled this system of medicine on a scientific base by necessary
research. By following the greatest scientists – Ibna sina, Hakim Azmol
khan, Hakim Abdul majeed, Hakim Mohammed said, in Bangladesh Dr.
Hakim Md. Yousuf Haroon Bhuiyan is playing the most important role for
developing the unani system of treatment by Hamdard. As a part of this
mission he established several institutions, like- Hamdard Unani Medical
college & Hospital, Bogra; Hakim said Eastern Medical College & Hospital,

Hamdard Unani Medical college & Hospital, Bogra is a diploma level
college. Now he takes the steps to upgrade the college to graduate level and
establish a 100 bedded teaching Hospital by this project. If the project comes
in success the poor people will get treatment by low cost . More students
will get the opportunity of higher education on unani medicine and finally
the nation will get their service. We hope the successful endings of this
project.

The total land area of Bangladesh is about 1.44 lac sq. km. and the
total population is about 164 million, among them 80% live in the
village. They do not get proper treatment because against the huge
population of the country we have only 43537 registered physician &
9000 registered hakims available. If we are able to provide them
treatment facilities at primary level they do not suffer in secondary or
tertiary level as a result majority of the population will get treatment
coverage.

Aim of the projectThe Aims of this project is to develop the quality of education,
medicine and treatment in the field of Unani (Eastern) system of
medicine.

Upgrade the existing diploma level college to graduate level college
with a intake of 50 students per year.
Establish a 100 bedded hospital with a facility of Unani and
emergency treatment.
To develop the quality of education, teaching and training
programes by providing necessary facilities.
To conduct problem oriented research and to co-ordinate all research
activities in various aspects of indigenous medicine.
To develop suitable cadre of manpower for indigenous medicine.
To develop technology for production of drugs from locally
available herbs and plants.

Background of the project :
Although the allopathic medicine is more advance but it is not reached to the
majority of the world’s people as well as Bangladesh.
Indigenous system of medicine includes mainly Ayurvedic and Unani
medicine in this region. These medicines may be of plants, animal and
mineral origin which are used in this country for years together and is
handed down from generation to generation. They provide health care
mostly in the rural community. These are less expensive and what even we
spend on these drugs remains inside our country
Bangladesh is one of the poor country with a large population living in rural
areas in the midst of poverty, can hardly afford modern medical and
treatment facilities. Introduction of indigenous system of medicine as a
complementary to the imported allopathic medicine will help the nation in
three dimensions.
(i) Saving foreign exchange, (ii) use general labor for intensive
cottage industries (iii) make self reliant in medicine. (iv) Minimizing
cost of treatment (v) Ensure primary health care to remote area.
Primary health care is a priority programmed in Bangladesh. It is now well
recognized that extension of modern medical services to all sections of the
people, particularly those living in backward and rural area, would take a
very long time and require the investment of large capital which Bangladesh
can afford hardly. The indigenous medicine can play an important
complementary role to accelerate this program. People living in rural areas
repose great confidence in Ayurvedic and Unani Medicine for meeting their
health problems.
The remote areas where there is no modern allopathic facilities, the
traditional (Unani and Ayurvedic) medicine still plays and important role in
providing health care facilities to the common poor mass.
In view of the above and the pragmatic need for developing traditional
systems of medicine with a view to strengthen on the overall health facilities
we have taken this project .

This Project will have the following provisions:
i)
Establishment of one College of Unani Medicine with annual
intake of 50 students in B.U.M.S Course for 5 years.
ii)
Establishment of one 100 bedded hospital.
iii) Setting up of a Research unit.
iv) Setting up of Pharmaceutical Production unit.
At present Only The Govt. Unani & Ayurvedic Medical (Degree)
college affiliated by the University of Dhaka is functioning in
Bangladesh. There is no Non Govt./Private Unani & Ayurvedic
Medical College in Bangladesh. Only 50 students get the opportunity
to admit there. That is due to lack of Institutions the interested
students do not get the same opportunity. So it is necessary to
establish graduation level Unani Medical college in Bangladesh.
The Proposed College :
The proposed Hamdard Unani Medical College & Hospital at Bogra
will run 5 years degree course with 1 (one) year – Internships, with an
annual intake of 50 students. The following academic department will
be set up in the college :i) Departments of common subject ;
a) Anatomy (b) Physiology & Biochemistry (d) Pathology &
Microbiology (d) Hygiene (d) Surgery (e). Forensic Medicine.
ii) Departments of Unani medicine:
a) Pharmacology (b) Basic Principle of Unani Medicine (c)Pharmacy
(d)Gynecology (e) Medicine
iii) Departments of Ayurvedic medicine:
a) Dravyagun & Rasashastra (b) Gynecology (c) Medicine.
Teaching Staffs:
The staffing pattern, the requisite qualification and experiences of the
teaching staffs are outlined in Appendix....... ???)
Hostel Facilities:
Hostel facilities for 300 students (150 male and 150 females) will be
available.

Affiliation by Recognised University:
Syllabus of Unani courses have been prepared in the light of existing
syllabus of Dhaka University for Govt.Unani & Ayurvedic degree
college and submitted to Dhaka University through Ministry of Health
& Population Control along with other information as rules and
regulations of admission of students and recruitment of teaching staffs
for the purpose of affiliation. It is on process .
Hospital:
The hospital will be 100 beded. In utilization of beds, emphasis will
be given to clinical research, in addition to curative care. The hospital
will be used also for practical training of the students. There will be
outdoor treatment facilities attached to the hospital. Subsequently the
bed strength may be increased.
In the year 2011-2012 the following departments will be in operation
for out door patients and teaching facilities for the students
1) Out patient department:
a) Unani male and female .
2) Surgical.
3) Skin and V.D.
a) Unani male and female .
4) Gynecology and pediatric:
a) Unani section .
5) Pathological Lab.
6) Medicines Preparation and Dispensary.
Research:
Research in various aspects of indigenous medicine, clinical,
Pharmaceutics production, standardization of drugs, contraceptives etc.
is envisaged as one of the most important component of the project.
The Principal cum-Superintendent will be in the overall charge of the
College, Hospital, Production unit and research unit and will
coordinate, organize and manage various activities of the project.
Production Unit:
The main functions of the production unit will be to product
indigenous drugs out of locally available medicinal plants and herbs
using, as far possible intermediate technology.

CONCLUSION
Hospital & physician has the most important role on the health care service
and in our daily life. After realizing the statistics of our health sector it is
needless to say that Bangladesh needs more medical educational institutions
and hospital mainly in the remote area. Furthermore, high skilled physicians
are very much reluctant to serve at rural areas, although the majority of our
people live in those areas. And majority of the rural peoples are highly
depended on using Unani medicines. This Unani medical college will be
based on Unani or Islamic system of medicine will facilitate local people to
get support on medical care and education. This will further allow utilizing
and researching locally available plants to produce Unani medicine.
