 New Teaching Staff (2014-­‐15) International College Hong Kong Senior Leadership Team Deputy Head of Lower School & Head of Student Guidance and Support Russell Duncombe BA, B.Sc., PGDE – Australian Russell is one of a rare breed – with degrees in both Arts and Science, he is an international teacher with extensive experience of both A Level and IBDP Psychology and English, as well as middle school science. In his previous school, in Vietnam, Russell held a variety of roles as Student Welfare Officer, University Advisor, and Extended Essay Coordinator. In his native Australia, he has also had responsibility as Head of International Programs, Coordinator for English, Student Exchange Coordinator and Year 9 Coordinator in schools. At ICHK, Russell will have overall responsibility for our team of form tutors, and for all other aspects of student support and guidance within the school. Deputy Head of Senior School Doug Kane BA (Hons), B.Sc., PGCE – British Doug is currently the IB Coordinator at South Island School, and was previously the Deputy Curriculum Director of a college in England. He has also held positions as Head of English and IBDP Head of Media Studies in previous schools. At ICHK, Doug will take responsibility for the Core Components of the IBDP (Creativity, Action and Service; Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay) and his experience as a teacher of English, Media Studies and TOK will be instrumental in ensuring that our students make the most of our curriculum and the Diploma Programme in particular. English English Teacher Natalie Bailey BA(Hons), PGCSE – British Natalie has taught in Hong Kong, China and at several schools in England. She has been Deputy Head of English in two schools, and a Lead Teacher for a Local Education Authority in England. Along with experience teaching English to students of all ages, she also has experience with expeditions and hiking; enabling her to assist and lead students who will be working towards the Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP). Languages Chinese Teacher Emma Zhang M.Ed. (Chinese), B.Ed. (Hons; English) – Chinese Emma has studied in Beijing, Hong Kong and at Durham University in the UK, majoring in English Literature, and specializing also in teaching Chinese as a Second Language. She has taught in the United States, Thailand, and Hong Kong, where she has continued her professional development by focusing on the use of ICT to advance the learning and teaching of Chinese. Emma’s experience in English, Chinese and ICT will be a huge asset at ICHK, for the Languages department and beyond. Science Science Teacher Rachel Punter M.Sc., PGCE – British Rachel qualifies as a truly ‘international’ teacher, with experience as Head of Science and Teacher of Science in six countries from Peru to Dubai to New Zealand. She has the knack of making science accessible and fun, devising memorable strategies to help students develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and their applications. Rachel has experience with A Levels, IBDP and IGCSEs. Although she originally majored in Chemistry at Kingston University in the UK, her M.Sc. is in Multidisciplinary Studies – ideal for a school such as ours, where the ambition is for students genuinely to appreciate the relationship between the sciences and other areas of the curriculum and their wider lives. Mathematics Mathematics Teacher Dawn Johnston BSc.(Hons), B.Ed. – Canadian Dawn originally studied Chemistry at Dalhousie University, and then qualified as a teacher of mathematics and science at the University of Toronto. She has taught in Canada and Korea, and most recently has focused on working with younger students and with those who need additional support in mathematics and science. She has, additionally, acted as a mentor for less experienced teachers, and developed programmes for students with EAL (English as an Additional Language) needs. Expressive Arts Drama & Movement Teacher Janice Im M.A.(Theatre), PGDE. – Hong Kong Janice studied Physical Theatre in both the United States and in England, and now works towards her master’s degree here in Hong Kong. She has taught English and Drama, and is able to deliver sessions with equal facility in English, Cantonese or Mandarin. She brings a wealth of other experiences to ICHK, including as an actor, a teacher of academic writing and literature, organizer of debate tournaments for schools across Hong Kong and as an instructor for Outward Bound. The sense of confidence and flexibility this imparts to Janice’s contribution is enormously valuable, and was much appreciated by our students when Janice provided cover for Jennifer Goldthorpe’s maternity leave last year. Humanities Teacher of History and Psychology Greg Miller BA (History) – American Greg has taught in Mexico, the USA and India and was the Head of Social Studies at his previous school. He has lead Model United Nations trips internationally, and organized service-­‐learning opportunities to support adults with autism. Greg has taught a wide range of subjects including AP History, AP Psychology, courses in World Religions, and Music and Drama. His diverse experiences and the rich appreciation of learning and teaching to which they have given rise will be very much appreciated at ICHK. RW/Feb 2014
