William Holtzman
F
or William Holtzman,
contributing to Lord Fairfax
Community College (LFCC)
made perfect sense. It was a way to
give back to the community he loves.
Holtzman, a Shenandoah
Valley native, always knew he wanted
to live in the area. Even as a youth,
when his friends and classmates
couldn’t wait to escape to the big
cities, he said he knew he was already
where he belonged. That’s why,
after earning his bachelor’s degree
in horticulture from Virginia Tech
(VT) in 1959 and his master’s degree
from Cornell University in 1961,
he returned to Mount Jackson, Va.
After working in the local apple
industry for 11 years, he decided
the time was right to start his own
business. In 1972, Holtzman Corp.
opened its doors. Today, that start-up
business has grown to include Holtzman Oil Corp., Holtzman Propane,
Valley Ice, six Burger Kings and two
Denny’s restaurants. Holtzman Corp.

business and now heads up his
propane and ice companies. His
daughter, Jill Holtzman Vogel, was
elected in 2007 to the Virginia State
Senate. He also has two
stepchildren — one is a
physician’s assistant in
Richmond and the other is
studying to be a paralegal.
Holtzman has a
tremendous commitment to
education that has presented
itself through his many and
various acts of generosity
over the years. In 2005, he

Holtzman’s dedication to investing in his community is something he
has encouraged in his own children.

Q: What inspired you to give to
LFCC?
A: We make our money off the people
who live here. I’m a firm believer that
you have to give back to the community you live and work in. I gave to
LFCC, because it offers students from
our area education and opportunities
and prepares them to be successful.
Q: Many donors choose to
contribute funds to a specific program. What made you
decide not to earmark your
donation in this way?
A: Schools need discretionary funds.
Hopefully, this way, LFCC can use
the money for whatever programs will
best benefit our area’s students.
Q: What advice do you have for
LFCC students?
A: Never do anything halfway. If
you’re going to do it, do it right. It’s so
important that we instill in our youth
a sense of pride in a job well done.

„„At the close of the spring 2008
semester, five LFCC students pursuing
career studies certificates in interior
design competed in what Shelby
Buracker, LFCC interior design
adjunct instructor, titled “LFCC
Design Star.” The competition
involved meeting with representatives
from DuPont Companies in Front
Royal and developing designs for
four rooms at DuPont’s facility. After
developing the designs, students
presented their plans to representatives
from DuPont for judging. In addition
to being a great learning experience, a
$500 award per room was presented to
the student with the winning design
— three students won awards, with
one student’s designs being chosen for
two rooms.
„„Jonathan Noyalas, assistant
professor of history, was invited
by the Virginia Foundation for
the Humanities (VFH) to be a
contributing author to Encyclopedia
Virginia, a multi-year online reference

Student Success
„„Members of LFCC’s Forensics
Team received numerous awards
at The Great Eastern Seaboard
Forensics Tournament at Brookdale
College in New Jersey, competing
against students from other two- and
four-year institutions. Five LFCC
students participated in the speech
and debate competition, helping the
Forensics Team to place second overall
at the tournament.
„„David Dutton, a 2008 LFCC
graduate who was born profoundly
deaf, received the Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation Undergraduate Transfer
Scholarship (Dutton is pictured
on the cover of this issue). Dutton
is the first LFCC student to receive
this scholarship, which is the largest
scholarship offered in the U.S. to
community college transfer students,
with awards totaling up to $30,000
per year for up to three years. Dutton
is studying historical preservation at
the University of Mary Washington.
Dutton’s career goal is to become a
conservator for a museum.
„„Lisa Bromfield, a 2008 LFCC
nursing graduate, released her CD
“Groovin’ in the Hippocampus:
Songs to learn Anatomy and
Physiology By” in April 2008. The
CD consists of 14 songs that contain
key concepts and definitions relating
to anatomy and physiology. The
songs were written by Bromfield and
arranged, recorded and produced by
her husband, Bill. Ramon Selove,
LFCC associate professor of anatomy
and physiology, edited the lyrics and
gave advice on which topics to cover.
Bromfield and Selove recently unveiled
the CD to instructors from across
the U.S. and Canada at the annual
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Society conference in New Orleans.
„„In May, U.S. Secretary of Education
Margaret Spellings announced the
selection of 139 outstanding high
school seniors as the 2008 Presidential
Scholars. Kirsti A. Campbell, an
LFCC dual enrollment student and
Winchester resident, was one of three
Virginia students who received this
honor. Presidential scholars were
honored for their accomplishments
and recognized by U.S. President
George W. Bush in Washington, D.C.,
at the end of June.

Resource Development
and Public Relations
„„LFCC said goodbye to two
local philanthropists and College
supporters in May. Shirley T. Corron
passed away on May 3, and Paul Wolk
passed away on May 28.
• M
rs. Corron’s belief in higher
education and LFCC’s impact
on the community prompted
her to contribute the largest
gift in the College’s history. Her
gift, which was in honor of her
deceased husband, is helping to
construct the Corron Community
Development Center, an important
addition to LFCC’s Middletown
Campus. To read more about
the Corrons, please visit http://
www.lfcc.edu/News/index.html.
• M
r. Wolk was an advocate of
higher education and a strong
supporter of LFCC. In addition
to establishing a scholarship,
Mr. Wolk was instrumental in
many of the efforts of the LFCC
Educational Foundation Inc. and
the College. The Paul Wolk Library
on the Middletown Campus and
the Paul and Sheila Wolk Hall on
the Fauquier Campus are named
in his and his wife’s honor.
„„In May, the College hosted a
retirement celebration for two
long-time faculty members — Charlie
Spiro and Gary Tusing. Spiro served
on the Foundation Board as the
LFCC faculty representative for
almost two years. Toward the end
of the retirement luncheon, Spiro
surprised everyone by announcing
his contribution of $1,700 to the
Foundation to establish a named
scholarship in memory of his mentor,
the late Albert M. Dryer.

„„A nationwide search is underway
for a new president of LFCC. To
assist in the search process, LFCC
Board members sought feedback
from the community through
town hall meetings and an online
survey. This feedback was taken into
consideration by the search committee
as they evaluated and interviewed the
applicants. Semi-finalist applicants will
be approved by Virginia Community
College System Chancellor Glenn
DuBois and the Virginia State Board
for Community Colleges. They will
visit LFCC for final interviews in
late September. A final candidate is
expected to be selected and announced
in October 2008.
„„LFCC recently received notification
