2008 RAFFLE
Thank You!!
The School Sisters of St. Francis raffle sale was most successful. First of all, we would like to thank all those who were
so generous with their time and assisted us before and after
the Masses. Without you we could not have handled the
crowds of people who were so generous in their purchase of
the tickets. Our retired Sisters will surely include all of you in
their prayers.
Secondly, a very sincere thank you goes out to all who
stopped by our tables and not only bought the raffle tickets,
but offered many kind words about the Sisters, both present
and those who served at St. Anne in the past. We wish everyone good luck on Sunday, October 12th, the day of the drawing in Milwaukee. Hopefully we will be able to give you some
names of St. Anne winners after that date.
KIDCHOIR "OPEN HOUSE" REHEARSAL
Children interested in "trying out" for the St. Anne Kidchoir are
invited to an "open house" rehearsal on Tuesday, August
19th, at 6:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Parish Center.
The rehearsal will last for 45 minutes, and the kids can join the
adult choir in singing for the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 7th. Kids who can read, from the 2nd grade and up,
are welcome to the open house. See you there! Questions?
Call Rory at 847.620.3064 in the liturgy office.
Reflections
BY SISTER LAURETTA LEIPZIG, PASTORAL ASSOCIATE AND DIRECTOR OF ADULT EDUCATION
Silence
Someone once said, "Surely it's no coincidence that the word 'listen' is an
anagram of the word 'silent.'"
Shortly after finding that little saying in a local newsletter, I came upon two
short writings of Richard Rohr in his book, "Radical Grace" that reinforced this
statement. These are taken directly from this book. He writes:
We must learn to trust God. Developing that trust is worth some
particular attention, worth making time to stop and pray, and be
quiet in God. At times, we have to step into God's silence. That
may be impractical, but the way of faith is not the way of efficiency.
God has not called us to an efficient way of life. We are called to a
way of faith. Much is a matter of listening and waiting.
As a people, we are afraid of silence. That's our major barrier to
prayer. I believe silence and words are related. Words that don't
come out of silence probably don't say much. They probably are
more an unloading than a communicating. Yet words feed silence,
and that's why we have the word of God — the read word, the proclaimed word, the written word. But that written and proclaimed
word doesn't bear a great deal of fruit. It doesn't really break open
the heart of the spirit unless it's tasted and chewed, unless it's felt
and suffered and enjoyed at a level beyond words.
Blaise Pascal said all human evil came into the world because people can't sit still in a chair for thirty minutes! I hope that's an exaggeration. Maybe he's saying that running from silence is undoubtedly running from our souls, ourselves, and therefore, from God.
If I had to advise one thing for spiritual growth, it would be silence!

questions, please do not hesitate to contact Doris Kelsch at 847.620.3072 or

MONDAY NIGHTS:
There seems to be some confusion regarding the Monday night session. While the content
of all adult breakouts will be the same, regardless of the date selected, the format of Monday night will be geared toward adults. There will still be a high school teen breakout
session on Monday that will be exactly the same as the other 5 sessions. So, if your
family consists of small children, as well as high school aged children — you should select a
day other than Monday. Please be advised that:
•
Monday night sessions will begin at 7:00 p.m. instead of 6:00 p.m.
•
Enrollment at the Monday night sessions will be limited to high school teens
and adults
•
Childcare and children's sessions will not be offered on Monday night
•
Presentations will be geared toward adult learners and high school aged
adolescents

First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 (USCCB)
Thus says the LORD:
Observe what is right, do what is just;
for my salvation is about to come,
my justice, about to be revealed.
The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him,
loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants —
all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant,
them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar,
for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.
Responsorial Psalm 67: 2 3, 5, 6, 8. 0 God, let all the nations praise you.
-
Second Reading: Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 (USCCB)
Brothers and sisters:
13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles.
Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,
I glory in my ministry 14 in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of
them
15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world,
what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
29
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
3° Just as you once disobeyed God
but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,
31 so they have now disobeyed in order that,
by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy.
32 For God delivered all to disobedience,
that he might have mercy upon all.
Gospel: Matthew 15:21 - 28 (USCCB)
Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon."
23 But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.
Jesus' disciples came and asked him,
"Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."
24 He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
But
the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, "Lord, help me."
25
26 He said in reply,
"It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs."
27 She said,
"Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table
of their masters."
28 Then Jesus said to her in reply,
"0 woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish."
And her daughter was healed from that hour.

BY CLEM ASERON, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF LITURGY AND COORDINATOR OF SCRIPTURAL MINISTRIES
Living Story
0 God, let all the nations praise you!
This is the third Sunday in which the readings center around what might be called the signs of God's kingdom;
the first two were the feeding of the 5000 and Jesus walks on water.
Matthew incorporates this story written earlier by Mark but shifts the focus of that version (Mk 7:24) from a
healing to a narrative-dialogue that reveals the tension that was in his own community around 85 C.E., 1 some fifteen years after the destruction of the Temple and the ouster from it of the Judean Christians. Recall that Matthew writes to a cosmopolitan, "urban" church in Antioch of Syria where the members are both Judeans as well as
gentiles. The question in his community is about the relative positions of Jew and Gentile in God's plan of salvation. The miraculous healing of the woman's daughter provides the backdrop out of which Matthew answers them
(us) at v.28 by quoting Jesus as saying to the pagan woman, a member of the non-Chosen, a gentile, 0 woman,
great is your faith. How does the Matthew community hear this? Do the gentiles rejoice and the Jews recoil?
Jesus withdraws toward pagan (gentile) territory (v.21). The Greek word does not reveal that he actually entered the region. The woman comes out from that region into Judean area. (So she is coming to Israel!) All this is
consistent with Jesus' directive to the Twelve at 10:5 about confining their mission to the lost sheep of Israel (and
confirmed here, at v.24 & 26).
Recall: she is a woman, she is alone, she is a pagan, she has violated religious, ethnic and geographic
boundaries. And, she dares to address a male. And how she addresses him: she calls him Lord three times and,
Son of David. Mind boggling to Matthew's people. Only "Christians" — those who believe Jesus to the One sent
by God — use the noun, Lord. On the other hand, only Judeans know (believe) him to be descended from King
David.
In the Judean mind among Matthew's people, there is tension. In their scripture there is on the one hand the
universal vision reflected in Isaiah chapters 40 - 66...lsrael is to be a light to the nations...all the ends of the earth
are to turn to God and be saved...God's justice will go forth as a light to the peoples. On the other hand, in Ezra
(Chap 9 & 10) and Nehemiah (10:30, 13:23), for example, there is definite exclusiveness; there is to be NO involvement with the Gentiles, especially no intermarriage. To the Gentiles of Matthew's community, there is tension as well. Are they or are they not acceptable? This story provides the way; it is a bridge. The God of Israel is
approachable through Israel. So Gentiles come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem: (See how Zech 8:20
draws beautifully on Isaiah 2:2:...ten men from the nations of every tongue will take hold of the robe of the Jew
saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you".) So, for both Judean and Gentile in Matthew's community, there is room: The one true God, the God of Israel, is approachable through Jesus, the Jew.
And, in the dialogue with the woman, Jesus admits there is place in this banquet in God's kingdom for the Gentile:
the children's food (that destined for the children of Israel) is/can be eaten by the dogs (gentiles). The pagan
woman's prayer is honored on the basis of her faith, that is, loyalty to or solidarity with, Jesus. This is the criterion
by which Gentiles (that's us!) become part of the Christian community.
0 God, let all the nations praise you!
Inclusivity is also highlighted in the other two readings. In the Isaiah pericope, at this point in their history, the
Israelites have returned from the Babylonian exile to rebuild the lands from which they had been dispersed.
Among the returned are the very foreigners among they had been exiled — pagans who had married into the Israelite clans and whose gods were not supposed to be worshipped. Would it not be better to gather The Chosen, to
coalesce them, especially around worship, by excluding the foreigners, who had led them astray? Who is it then
that the Lord brings to his holy mountain? God makes the distinction, not on the basis of birth or circumstances or
even religion, but on whether they would join themselves to him by holding fast to the Covenant ideals My house
shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 2
In the Paul passage, both Gentile and Judean are taken to task for being "disobedient". But both are given
mercy! And the hope is that the Judean rejection of the Messiah will one day be reversed. For Paul's community
the hope is that they will remain open to accepting the Judeans. 3
0 God, let all the nations4 praise you!
So What? Think of the kind of God whom Jesus reveals in this passage. Will you describe to
your teenage son or daughter such a God who moved in that way in your own experience?
FOOTNOTES:

Phrases like all peoples, all nations, which end in the
plural convey that those outside The Chosen are to be
included. The singular, people or nation, refers to The
Chosen.

Sacramental
We believe that the Celebration of the
Sacraments ranks among the most important
gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing
these celebrations with men and women who,
in some way, are part of our community.
Therefore, please note the following:
Baptism: Registration in the parish is a
prerequisite. For those parents who are
baptizing their first child, please allow 2 to 3
months in order to attend 2 required Baptism
sessions before setting the Baptism date. For
a subsequent child's baptism, an interview
session must be scheduled prior to setting the
date. All schedules are done in the parish
office. Please call 847.382.5300.
Marriage: A son or daughter of a registered
parishioner or a registered and active
parishioner will need to schedule an interview
with a parish staff person to set a date and
start the marriage process. Please call
847.382.5300.
First Eucharist and First Reconciliation:
These sacraments are celebrated in the
second grade. Candidates must complete the
preparation program which is coordinated
through the REP program. Please call the
REP office at 847.620.3068.
