Email Robert Carnevale at rcarnevale@holyblossom.org. Come Inside to Really Hear 4 Reflections The primary mitzvah of the shofar is not blowing it, but hearing its sound. The blessing we say before the shofar is: “Baruch Atah, Praised are You... lishmoah kol shofar, who commands us to listen to the voice of the shofar.” The Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 3) explores where the act of listening begins and ends. For example, the question is posed -- What if a Jew is passing by the outside of the synagogue on Rosh Hashanah just at the moment when the shofar is being blown? He hears the sound, but was not listening with any intention of hearing. Has he fulfilled the mitzvah or not? Judaism usually puts the emphasis on deed over creed, so we might expect the Rabbis to say, yes, the mitzvah is fulfilled. But the medieval commentators are divided on the matter. If the Jew heard the shofar without listening for it, does it count? The majority view is no, he has not yet fulfilled the mitzvah of “listening to the voice of the shofar.” But all is not lost. The Rabbis advise that now that the Jew is paying attention, he should simply listen again in order to fulfill the mitzvah of intentional listening. What does this come to teach? First, sometimes it all comes down to intention. Intention can make or break the moment. And second, usually in Jewish life we are blessed with many chances to try again and get it right. Over the past year we have launched a number of simultaneous listening campaigns. People have been listening with care and sincere intension. Congregants and professionals – both in-house and outside experts – have taken the mitzvah of listening very seriously. And hundreds and hundreds of congregants – young and old, new and multi-generational members – have taken the invitation to be heard very seriously. Rabbi Yael Splansky ysplansky@holyblossom.org What have we heard? Like the sound of tekiah, some voices speak of our strengths and much pride. Like the sound of shevarim, some voices sound sad or longing. Like the sound of t’ruah, others point out where we are broken and in need of repair. Like the Tekiah Gedolah, others come forward with a loud and clear call for action. “Those who come in through our doors with the intention of connecting, are more likely to connect.” And like the many calls of the shofar, patterns are beginning to emerge. Across the range of listening exercises, key findings are coming through with remarkable consistency. You’ll read about some of them in the following pages. One key finding is no surprise at all. Congregants who come into our building more often have more positive and fulfilling experiences than those who don’t. This insight was first taught in our Mishnah -- the passerby who inadvertently catches an echo of the shofar from the outside is not fulfilled, because intension matters. Whether for learning, prayer or good deeds, those who come in through our doors with the intention of connecting, are more likely to connect. It will be so good to be together again for the High Holy Days. We’ll stand together – inside these sacred walls – and we’ll listen with intension for the many voices of the shofar and for the many voices among us, too. L’Shanah Tovah! Holy Blossom Temple It is good to see us together As I write this High Holiday greeting to you, two stories come to mind, one very large and of global import, and the other a small family vignette. Both speak to the sanctity of these Days of Awe. The large story is the Yom Kippur War, named for the day it started in 1973. The decisions by Egypt and Syria to open hostilities, and Israel's blunted early response were shaped by the sanctity of the day. Who would have the audacity to attack on our holiest day? I remember well the hush in the synagogue when the rabbi shared the existentially frightening news during his Yom Kippur sermon. The second, years later, was for us equally memorable from quite the opposite perspective. Our elder daughter, Rachel, then in her early twenties had been working in rural Utah. Our younger daughter, Elyse, had flown out to visit, planning to join her for a leisurely eastward drive across the continent, back to Toronto. We had spoken with them Erev Rosh Hashanah. They were in Lincoln Nebraska and figured to be home in a week. They were having a wonderful time sharing an adventure. We came home from Temple the next day, a little bit rushed because twenty relatives were coming over to celebrate Yom Tov. I remember Karen and I talking about the hosting logistics as we turned into the driveway... “As you come through our doors and into our spaces, feel welcome.” The Holidays are a time of ingathering and have been since our earliest days as a faith. We come together. Some of us attend Temple but once a year. Others only come to some of our educational events, regulars who hardly ever enter our Sanctuary. Yet others are worship regulars, even daily. We hold different views, and often express “The Holidays are a time of ingathering and have been since our earliest days as a faith.” them without hesitation – except on these days. We are a diverse congregational family who, underneath all the apparent differences and perspectives, share a common visceral understanding. We are Reform Jews and members of the Holy Blossom family. The past year has been one of internal reflection, reawakening and renewal. Many things we had, for years, tacitly believed about Temple have been brought forward into open conversation. Our passions, our differences and our uncertainties about our future direction have become the subject of focused planning. Jacob's Tower is one of the first visible manifestations of our internal energy and our future vision. There is much more to come. ...There was 'Clifford', our daughter's travel weary Jeep! The girls had driven for 30 hours straight, stopping only to fill the tank and keep up the caffeine levels. They wanted to surprise us for Rosh Hashannah. As you come through our doors and into our spaces, feel welcome. Reach out to those you know well and to those less familiar. L'Shana Tova is about coming together and joining together. It is the reflective silence of Amidah and the call to our heritage of Yizkor. It is the energy of our voices in prayer and the resonance of the shofar as it reminds us of our roots and values. Beyond the powerful spiritual messages of pause, internal reflection, and our obligations both to God and one another stands another theme: welcoming. We, your leaders, lay and professional, wish you a good year, and a welcome. It is good to see us together. Bulletin • September 2013 From the Board Dr. Harvey Schipper president@holyblossom.org 5 Listening and Responding to the Sound of the Shofar I am a teacher. Sometimes, my students listen to me. I am a parent. Sometimes, my children listen to me. I am not always sure when I am being listened to and when I’m being ignored. But there is one time during the year when I know that I am being listened to. When, on Rosh Hashana morning, standing before a packed congregation, I pick up the shofar and blow, I know that people are listening to me. I know that some people are listening only to hear how long I will extend my tekiah gedolah. (For many years, one congregant, who always sat in the same seat in the balcony, would report to me on how many seconds it lasted.) However, I know that for most of the congregation, the sound of the shofar is what it is meant to be: a wake-up call, a call to look inside ourselves, a call to repent our past misdeeds, and a call to improve our behavior. When I was in the elementary grades of Religious School during the 1950s, a few of us asked Cantor Stolnitz to teach us to blow the shofar. At the time, he was the only one at Temple who did that. (At one point in our history, no one blew the shofar: the organist sounded a note in imitation of the shofar!) One of Cantor Stolnitz’s students was Lloyd Duckman. In 1953, on Rosh Hashana, he became the first ‘non-professional ‘ to blow the shofar from the bima when, on a moment’s notice, Rabbi article by Michael Cole via templemail@holyblossom.org Feinberg conscripted him to fill in for an absent professional. Lloyd had celebrated his bar mitzvah only a few months before! He continued as a shofar blower at Holy Blossom for many years. My own career as a ba’al tekiah began around 1969, when Cantor Merel asked me to participate during the first service on Rosh Hashana morning, which my parents and I had always attended. Later, he asked me to blow a tekiah gedolah at the conclusion of our newly-established selichot service, and to blow another single blast at the end of neilah (the first time that that sounding had occurred). For many years, the conclusion of Yom Kippur consisted of one person (me) giving one long blast to let people know that it was time to go home and end their fast. Today, at neilah, I am joined by many shofar blowers. In recent years, Cantor Maissner has instituted the practice of shofar blowing during daily services in Elul as a means of preparing us for the High Holy Days. I have been proud over these many years to be a shofar blower at Holy Blossom. Now one of many ba’alei tekia, I hope for many years to rouse our congregation to the mitzva of l’shmoa kol shofar: to listen – and to respond – to the sound of the shofar. 6 Holy Blossom Temple Our hopes and concerns for future generations of our Temple A year ago June, inspired by my confirmation class trip to Israel, and about to embark on a two month Israel experience with NFTY EIE, I met with Rabbi Thomashow to discuss the prospects of what is, today, the Campaign for Youth Engagement (CYE). After that summer, I joined this awesome team, and we began reflecting deeply about our hopes and concerns for the future generations of our temple, and how to reach out to the community! And thus was born the CYE Listening Campaign. Through the campaign, we held conversations with youth, parents, educators, and our clergy, hearing, in total, from over 300 community members. And we collected over 120 post-it notes with dreams for youth on our Listening Wall. We listened, and we heard that what we offer as a congregation does not meet all needs and expectations for youth. There is a strong desire for change, and an interest in greater relationships and sense of community. Our community’s vision for the future includes: • a greater commitment to youth, where youth are involved at all levels, and consideration of youth is embedded in all decision-making. • diversity and differentiation – where youth are supported on their own unique, personalized Jewish journey through Bulletin • September 2013 diversified programming, education, and volunteer offerings, worship choices, and connections with external organizations. • deeper community relationships – a temple where all clergy are actively engaged with youth, and the congregation supports building a meaningful community for all youth. Our CYE Team has been sharing these wisdoms with the Holy Blossom Temple Board, Senior Staff, and various committees including Education, Renewal, Transition, Worship, and receiving a positive response! I am so grateful to have been included in such a meaningful learning experience. This process has helped me, personally, to identify what it means to be Reform – part of an ever-evolving Judaism – and to take responsibility for expressing my desires as a part of a large congregation, and embodying these desires in all facets of my life. Thank you CYE Team, for including youth like myself in your endeavours! The Boomer Project While everyone knows that volunteers are a vital source of talent for Jewish organizations and we all realize that Boomers are an untapped resource, it turns out the volunteer experience can be better for everyone involved. It turns out it’s more than a matter of time. With that in mind, the UJA undertook an in-depth study of volunteerism and Holy Blossom Temple was one of eleven organizations chosen to participate in the initiative. The goal: determining how to engage Boomers more meaningfully. Our initial project collected qualitative and quantitative data about Boomers and volunteerism at HBT. We held a number of small gatherings to learn from our Boomers where they volunteered and why, what makes for satisfying experiences and how we can improve. Janice Babins and Rabbi Teri Appleby article by tappleby@holyblossom.org talented, engaged and experienced volunteers to fill well defined, meaningful and necessary roles – and contribute to our feeling of community. Based on the success of our initial findings, we know we can build a vibrant volunteer program at HBT and we’re ready to expand our scope beyond the Boomer cohort. To create a new and invigorated volunteer bureau, our next step is to establish a task force to finalize a new vision for volunteerism at HBT and build an implementation plan and timetable. They’ll start with a data collection phase to identify volunteer opportunities and move on to create a roster of potential volunteers that catalogues their specific skills, interests and experiences, and matches them with meaningful and enriching opportunities. We asked lots of questions and received a wealth of revealing information. As we hoped, participants were eager to be heard and had a lot to tell us. Our conversations were enlightening and a number of eye-opening insights helped us re-think the role of volunteers at HBT. 8 Overall, a diverse group of committed volunteers – boomers and not – expressed consistently similar opinions and ideas. The predominant view was that we need to “professionalize” and centralize our volunteer department. Volunteers need to know their time is valued as an essential contribution. Another consistent comment was the importance of rebuilding a strong community at Holy Blossom. It’s clear we need We’ll invite staff, committee chairs and auxiliaries to identify volunteer roles and re-imagine and reinvigorate volunteerism at HBT. We envision a whole new process of volunteer orientation, training and supervision as well as ongoing support and appreciation. We’ll promote respectful and real partnerships among lay leaders, congregants and staff. And we need you. Your volunteer contribution is more than a matter of time and we invite you to be a part of this exciting initiative. Holy Blossom Temple Israel Engagement Update ... Learnings, Process and Vision We previously reported that we had embarked on a process called Israel Engagement, sponsored by UJA Federation, with a facilitator from the Jewish Agency in Israel. Our objective is to raise the profile of Israel among our members and give you more opportunities to engage with Israel through HBT. Here’s an update. Through the Israel Engagement process, our project team has surveyed the current profile of Israel throughout the Temple, obtained input through a member survey, and developed a vision of Israel Engagement for HBT. Over 200 members responded to our on-line survey. Here are some highlights: • Our members see Israel primarily as a place of great modern achievements (a “start up nation”) and as the land of our heritage, even more than as a country at war or a safe haven for Jews. • The interests of our members in Israel are varied, the most common being history, politics, science/technology and arts/ culture. • Most commonly suggested ways that Holy Blossom can help to engage with Israel: lectures and education, travel to Israel, social and cultural programs • Key areas of interest: politics (including the political process), influence of ultra-Orthodox, the place of liberal Judaism, relations with the Palestinians and the peace process, antiZionism, and culture (arts, music, everyday life) • About half of the respondents think of Israel as a home. • Just under 10% of respondents say they speak Hebrew. Jeff Denaburg and Rivanne Sandler article by co-chairs of the Israel Committee templemail@holyblossom.org Based on our research, survey results and feedback from informal meetings, the team developed the following vision: The vision of Holy Blossom Temple’s engagement with Israel is two sided: we will bring Holy Blossom, as a Reform congregation, to Israel and bring Israel to Holy Blossom. Our aim is to build complex, lifelong relationships between our congregants, Israel and Israelis. In order to achieve this aim, Holy Blossom will become a bridge for, and a hub of, Toronto-Israel connections. If you are interested in engaging with Israel on any level, you will think first of Holy Blossom; if you are not thinking of engaging with Israel, Holy Blossom will show you why you should. This engagement will be reflected in all areas of congregational life. Through cultural, intellectual, political, religious, social, travel, and social action experiences, the synagogue will encourage inter- and intra-communal conversations that express a diversity of views and ideas. The result will be an active commitment of Holy Blossom with Israel. The team is currently developing an action plan based on this vision and your input. Over the coming year you’ll see the results of this plan. Good news - UJA Federation awarded Holy Blossom Temple the second annual Israel Engagement Award, as a result of the work that HBT has done on the Israel Engagement project, our Shinshinim program (young Israeli envoys) and other Israelbased programming. Congratulations to us all - organizers and participants in Israel-related activities at HBT. 9 Bulletin • September 2013 Congregational Survey Through this survey, we have heard you. And in many areas of synagogue life, it is time for change R Rabbi Helfman and Dr. Harvey Schipper article by templemail@holyblossom.org This has turned out to be a quite remarkable year at Holy Blossom. We are coming together, listening to and hearing one another. Now we are taking stock of what we have learned. In the past six months we sense our mood is lifting. As these High Holy Days approach, there is an excitement around the place. New leadership roles, the on-time progress toward selecting our Senior Rabbi, the restored and renewed building (with Jacob’s Tower as a first visible step), the Campaign for Youth Engagement, exciting new ways to deliver education and adult programs and the steady reengagement of the volunteers who make this place live all say that we are embracing change. The sheer number of us who have entered the conversation speaks to our re-engagement, and expresses a substantial expectation. We have heard from you in many ways: the transition process, the congregational survey, annual campaign calls and countless conversations. They have provided a consistent theme – we are ready for change. Speaking specifically about the congregational survey, over forty percent of the members of this congregation whose e-mail addresses are in our database (and thus receive Life at Holy Blossom) participated in the Measuring Success survey. Forty percent is a truly tremendous response rate. Thank you for taking the time to share your views on our temple family, which will help us in the future to help this community become one even more valued by its members. 10 We now have data in support of anecdote. The information you provided us in this survey, gives us a much clearer idea of what we should prioritize, what we can celebrate and in what areas changes are necessary. to recommend our programming to their friends. We need to better articulate our mission and vision of Holy Blossom as a special place within the Reform Movement. We can take pride in our adult education program, which is so central to the identity and purpose of our congregation. Measuring Success, our consultancy firm, has found five focus areas which can lead to a healthier and happier synagogue. They are that, for the congregation as a whole and for individual congregants: • the vision and values of the synagogue resonate • the rabbis’ vision of Jewish life resonates • the synagogue helps in developing meaningful social connections • the rabbis are welcoming • the lay leadership is welcoming and effective The High Holy Days are a time when change is all around us and also within us. This is a season when we have always assessed what it is that enriches us, what we need to strengthen, and how to live our lives as better individuals. Our congregation lives in a sacred partnership, a uniquepartnership between the congregation and its leaders as a whole as well as between the congregation and every individual who is part of it. This relationship isconstantly evolving. What we have learned from these conversations allows us to continue to build on the extraordinary legacy of Holy Blossom and to view our future with enthusiasm. ShanahTovah. For instance, we have learned that we have to make this a more welcoming place. We have to build on the Campaign for Youth Engagement so students that have become b’nei mitzvahcome Holy Blossom Temple AGM Holy Blossom Temple’s Annual General Meeting of members will be held on Sun. Our Year in Photos 11 Bulletin • September 2013 Bulletin • September 2013 Transition Next steps in the Rabbinic Transition Process Barry Campbell Chair: Transition Steering Committee transition@holyblossom.org May’s eBlast and post on the Holy Blossom website announced the Looking Forward Committee’s outreach to our members, the next step in our HBT Transition process. Thank you to all of our members who offered their opinions, comments and suggestions about the attributes of our next Senior Rabbi. The participation of so many Temple congregants has made this outreach an unprecedented success, giving our Temple membership a unique opportunity to have their voices heard. 12 Transition Using different approaches (online and written suggestion boxes, the Congregational survey question on rabbinic attributes and targeted meetings with many of Temple’s special purpose groups), we asked two questions about members’ hopes and expectations of our future Senior Rabbi. In a remarkable involvement rate, over 1500 unique Temple visitors reviewed the materials online. Some 75 responses were filed on the Temple’s website and 16 more were dropped into the suggestion box. Almost 700 HBT members responded to the Rabbinic Attribute survey question. We have held eight group outreach discussions: Mondays@Temple; Service leaders and Gabbaim; Bikur Cholim; Sisterhood; Family Service; Religious School Education Committee; Tot Shabbat; and Youth Engagement leaders; and have gained further insights from interviews with all of our clergy. More meetings have been scheduled with groups and individuals including past Presidents and Temple leaders who have come forward in order to ensure that all the different demographics and interests of our community are consulted. In summarizing the broad themes of the survey results and outreach efforts to date, we identified two categories that captured almost all of the attributes that members want to see in their Senior Rabbi: 1) Skills - inspiring, educator, leadership, communication across generations and a skilled orator; 2) Personality Traits – welcoming, approachable, engaging, compassionate and charismatic; While it is not realistic to expect that the next Senior Rabbi will be able to fulfill every attribute desired by the Congregation, HBT members have given a clear signal about their expectations and needs. All your perspectives have been synthesized, summarized and submitted to the Search Committee. In preparation for their search activities, the Search Committee has already reached out to congregations across North America and leading Rabbis in our Reform movement to learn about the best practices of conducting a rabbinic search. The Search Committee is responsible for presenting a Senior Rabbi Position Description for the Board’s review and approval this summer. This document will contain a comprehensive description of the most important qualities and expectations that our congregation is seeking in a new Senior Rabbi. It will also contain preliminary information prepared by the Board as part of a forthcoming consultation Holy Blossom Temple process regarding congregational aspirations about HBT’s goals, missions and values. Once approved, the final Position Description, which will be used in both the recruitment and interview phases of the search, will also be shared with all members of the Temple. This Position Description will be posted by the CCAR and circulated to potential Rabbinic candidates in North America and abroad. As outlined in our earlier September 2013 Bulletin communication, candidate sourcing and interviews will take place through the fall of 2013, with a final selection anticipated in early 2014. Over the last year we have received many comments online about all that is happening at Holy Blossom Temple. Included below are a few examples from members joining the conversation. From: Helen Lyon On: Launching our Renewal from Jacob’s Tower. About 40 years ago, when I was a teacher of grade 3 Religious School, we treated the Tower as a mysterious secret room. It was Heinz Warschauer’s private office but as the Director of Education he used a more accessible office in the school department. For one of many director-teacher meetings, I was called to the tower and I looked forward to that with great anticipation. Like belonging to a secret society, having been up in the tower was one of the highlights of my teaching career! I will be one of the climbers on September 7th, to renew a pleasant old memory. Reply: Joan Garson Chair, Renewal Project Engagement Committee Thank you for sharing this lovely comment. I joined Temple after the Tower was no longer open. Your recollection brings the history of the Tower and of Temple alive for me (and I am sure for everyone who read your comment). I look forward to climbing with you on September 7. From: Pnina Margolese On: Join the Renewal Conversation When this project began, many years ago, a number of us did formal proposals. One such proposal was for a walk-in Judaica Shop. Does this still stand! It needs to be in the Atrium space, and can be a source of “community” gathering. Also, I feel that there should be a gathering space in the Atrium, not just a space where children wait for their car to drive up to pick them up, but a space where those picking up children have a chance to meet each other over a cup of coffee or whatever. A very friendly enviorment that people will want to come to. Reply: Eric Klein 14 Renewal Project Engagement Committee My name is Eric Klein (you may know me better as Gillian Helfield’s husband!!). I am a member of the Temple’s Renewal Project Engagement Committee. I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your comments posted on the website with respect to the renewal project. Your comments will be forwarded to the Building Committee where they can be considered in an appropriate manner. As well in the fall there will be discussions with the many committees who commented on their particular wishes and of course Sisterhood will be consulted to continue the discussion from an earlier plan. Your comments about the Atrium resonate with many congregants who are also seeking that warm community feel from the new space. Again thank you for taking the time to respond.
