In keeping with our promise to continue to provide the best of care to all our members, Discovery Health
Medical Scheme provides valuable cover for when you need it most.
This document gives you more information about how Discovery Health Medical Scheme covers you for
schedule 3 and above medicine from your day-to-day benefits.

Above Threshold Benefit
Day-to-day benefits
Discovery Health Rate for
medicine
Description
On the Executive, Priority and Comprehensive plan types, the Above
Threshold Benefit gives you extra day-to-day cover when your Medical
Savings Account runs out and when your day-to-day claims add up to a
set Rand amount. The Above Threshold is limited on the Priority Plans.
For members on the Classic Comprehensive Zero MSA Plan, you need
to reach the Annual Threshold to have cover for day-to-day medical
expenses.
For this document, these are the funds available in the Medical Savings
Account, Above Threshold Benefit, and where applicable the Insured
Network Benefit.
This is the rate at which Discovery Health Medical Scheme will pay for
medicine. It is the single exit price for medicine plus the relevant
dispensing fee.
Discovery Health’s Preferred Medicine List
Discovery Health Medical Scheme has developed a list of preferred medicines
The Preferred Medicine List offers you real value for your money, because we cover them in full up to the
Discovery Health Rate for medicines under certain conditions. Discovery Health’s preferred medicine list is
made up of all schedule 3 and above preferentially priced generics and a defined list of preferentially priced
brand medicines.
Use medicines on the Preferred Medicine List for full cover for your medicine claimed from
your day-to-day benefits
On all plans that offer day-to-day benefits, you can enjoy full cover when claiming for schedule 3 and above
medicines from your day-to-day benefits when using medicines on the Preferred Medicine List.
On Executive, Classic Comprehensive and Classic Delta Comprehensive Plans, when you have spent your
Medical Savings Account allocation for the year and before you reach your Annual Threshold, you enjoy
additional cover for medicine through the Insured Network Benefit.
The Insured Network Benefit provides full cover for both preferentially priced generic and original brand
schedule 3 and above medicines that are on the Preferred Medicine List, if you use a provider in our network.
Providers in our network include certain independent pharmacies, MediRite Pharmacy, Pick n Pay Pharmacy,
Clicks Pharmacy, Dis-Chem and MedXpress.
Please refer to the section Benefits available for your plan type for more details.
The Preferred Medicine List includes both preferentially priced original brand, and generic
medicines
The list includes both generic and original brand medicines which means that certain brand medicines are
included on the Preferred Medicine List. Conversely certain non-preferentially priced generic medicines are not
on the list. For medicine that is not on the Preferred Medicine List, there is better priced alternative medicine
available on this list.
In many instances there is more than one medicine on the market to treat a particular condition. Some of
these are generic medicines while others are the original brand non-generic medicine.
The benefits for using medicines on the Preferred Medicine List
You have access to a wider range of day-to-day medicines at 100% cover
You will find both generic and original brand medicines on the Preferred Medicine List are covered at 100% of
the Discovery Health Rate for medicines.
You have the choice of full cover
You have greater certainty of cover when it’s time to claim, reducing shortfalls in cover.
Preservation of your Medical Savings Account
Funds in your Medical Savings Account are not used because you save through a wide range of better priced
medicines.
Extended day-to-day cover during the Self-payment Gap
You have access to full cover for medicine at a network pharmacy through the Insured Network Benefit on the
Executive, Classic Comprehensive and Classic Delta Comprehensive Plans. Payment is subject to the prescribed
medicine limit.
Extended cover in the Above Threshold Benefit
You have 100% cover for medicine from the Above Threshold Benefit. The Above Threshold Benefit is limited
on the Priority Plans. Payment is subject to the prescribed medicine limit.
Always speak to your doctor and pharmacist about cost savings
We encourage the use of generic medicines that are included in our Preferred Medicine List. Your pharmacist
or doctor is the best person to tell you about the benefits of substituting your prescribed item with a more
preferentially priced (normally a generic) medicine where appropriate.

More about what generic medicines are
Generic medicines all have the same active ingredient at the same strength and formulation as the original
brand medicine. Generics are copies of the original patented brand name product and provide similar quality,
safety and efficacy. Because a generic medicine doesn’t have to bear the initial costs of research and patenting
before the Medicines Control Council licenses and approves it, it is sometimes up to 70% less expensive than
the original product.
Remember choosing available generic medicines will be of the same value to you and will still have the desired
clinical effect.
Discovery Health Medical Scheme constantly negotiates favourable prices with pharmaceutical manufacturers
for original brand and generic medicines. This, together with the medicine price fluctuations in the market
where some original brand medicines prices are reduced significantly, gives us the opportunity to look at ways
of enhancing the cover for our members.
Non-generic medicines that have been added to the Preferred Medicine List
You have access to full cover for all schedule 3 and above generic medicine plus a defined list of preferentially
priced non-generic medicine from the Insured Network Benefit at a network pharmacy. Payment is subject to
the prescribed medicine limit.
This list is a summary of the non-generic medicine that will be covered in full in addition to all preferentially
priced generic medicine.

As previously explained all schedule 3 and above generic medicine is covered in full from the Insured Network
Benefit, with exception of the below non-preferentially priced generics. Discovery Health Medical Scheme
covers these medicines at 75% of the Discovery Health Rate for medicines, from the available day-to-day
benefits (90% for the Executive Plan), subject to the prescribed medicine limit.

When you have spent your annual Medical Savings Account allocation and
before your claims add up to your Annual Threshold, we pay for schedule 3
and above medicines on the Preferred Medicine List from the Insured
Network Benefit. We pay these medicines in full at the Discovery Health Rate
for medicine when you use a network pharmacy. Pharmacies in our network
include certain independent pharmacies, MediRite Pharmacy, Pick n Pay
Pharmacy, Clicks Pharmacy, Dis-Chem and MedXpress.
Please note: Claims paid from the Insured Network Benefit do not add up to
your Annual Threshold.
When your claims add up to your Annual Threshold, we pay schedule 3 and
above medicines on the Preferred Medicine List from the Above Threshold
Benefit in full at the Discovery Health Rate for medicine.
We pay for day-to-day claims for schedule 3 and above medicines that are not
on the Preferred Medicine List from your Medical Savings Account up to
100% of the Discovery Health Rate for medicine.

costs yourself. 90% of the Discovery Health Rate for medicines will add up to

above medicines that are not on the Preferred Medicine List from the Above
Threshold Benefit at 90% of the Discovery Health Rate for medicine.

your claims add up to your Annual Threshold, we pay for schedule 3 and
above medicines on the Preferred Medicine List from the Insured Network
Benefit. We pay these medicines in full at the Discovery Health Rate for

Benefit in full at the Discovery Health Rate for medicine.
For members on the Classic Comprehensive Zero MSA Plan, you need to
reach the Annual Threshold to have cover for day-to-day medical expenses.
We pay for day-to-day claims for schedule 3 and above medicines that are not
on the Preferred Medicine List from your Medical Savings Account up to
100% of the Discovery Health Rate for medicine.
