Sharing from Alumnus
The skills lab sessions have prepared
me well for the field work placements.
I was given a taste of handling clients
from different backgrounds through
case interviews, group discussions and
community work.
Being a youth worker in outreaching setting, counseling is the foremost work
that I need to do. Lots of basic counseling skills were learnt from the program.
They are important to facilitate effective counseling. More importantly,
empathy is well-trained through the program. It makes me building up rapport
easily with non-engaged youth, as well as providing therapeutic interviews with
youngsters.

CHAN Ho Yan Herman
(2012 Graduate)
With the guidance of my teachers, I learnt to
apply my social work knowledge and skillsets
during the skills lab sessions. The intensive
trainings not only equipped me to be more
explorative and to think independently, but
they also provided me with the organizational
skills and leadership qualities required to
overcome the challenges faced during my
field placement and career.

Exploring the Real World Context Field Work Placement
F
ield work placement provides students with first-hand
on-site learning which is entirely indispensable for a
professional training. We currently have the most extensive
coverage of overseas countries and the largest number
of students undertaking international placements among
local social work training institutes. Our students have left
footprints all over the world, including Australia, Canada,
the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan,
Taiwan and Mainland China.
Students’ participation in a wide array of fieldwork
settings provides them plenty of opportunities for value
bombardment, creative problem-solving and adaptive
adjustments. All are conducive to their personal and
professional development.

practise my knowledge and skills, but also developed my
passion to work with my clients. After living independently
in a foreign country for 3 months, I have learned to be strong

Learning without Boundaries –
Exchange Study
T
he Department encourages students to participate in exchange
programmes, so that they can be cultivated as global citizens with
international exposure. Students can explore social work and social
welfare from a global perspective.
Finland Exchange
Programme
W
e provide financial support to students to participate in the Finland summer school
which brings together students and instructors from different countries. Participants have
opportunities to learn about the social welfare system and services in Finland. The programme
includes lectures, small group discussions, agency visits, cultural events, and field trips. Special
events such as the “international night” enable participants to share selected aspects of their
culture in a relaxing informal atmosphere.

Having the opportunity to participate in the Finland
Exchange programme has widened my horizons
on the practices and theories that can be applied
to social work. What really inspired me most was
the commonality of the challenges we face around
the world as social workers and despite the cultural
differences, we can work together and share our
experiences to improve the service we render to our
clients. The new friends we make are an everlasting
memory of the time we spent together there.
In 2011 summer, I am so grateful
that I had the opportunity to join
the Finland exchange programme.
By interacting with social work
students from different parts of the
world, I have learnt more about how social work is perceived
and practiced in other countries. Also, I was inspired by how a
country's culture and ideology can affect her social welfare and
social services. This programme enabled me to review Hong
Kong's welfare system with a different perspective and with
new insight.

Ying De Group
ingde Group, a non-governmental organization, was founded by a group of HKU Social
Work students in 1993 to provide academic support for students in Yingde, a remote
province in China. We believe that knowledge can change destiny, therefore, subsidies are
provided to financially needy students in remote areas. In order to raise people's awareness
on the situation in Yingde, the Group organizes several fund-raising programs and service
trips for students.
Social Work and
Social Administration
Society
T
he Society organizes an array of activities throughout the year, both within and
beyond campus. To enhance Social Work students’ unity and sense of belonging to the
Department, we organized the orientation camp and “Open Semester Dinner”. Outdoor
activities, such as community works, lunch time salon on social issues and the June Forth
memorial event etc., were also held to encourage SW students to dedicate effort to the
community. It is the ultimate goal to contribute towards a better world through our social
work profession.

Continuing Studies
Continuous education is pivotal for
our profession to deliver its promises
of helping and empowering people
in need in the context of an everchanging environment.
We offer the following postgraduate
programmes for graduates to specialize
their skills and knowledge:
Master of Social Sciences
Master of Philosophy
Doctor of Philosophy
I was most impressed by the Problem-based Learning in which skills
of searching for community resources were enhanced. I have learnt
how to oversee the situation in a systematic and thorough way. The
interactive learning among tutors and groupmates inspired me with
new ideas. The BSW programme provided me with exposure to social
work experts who in turn enhanced my understanding of society and
clients’ needs.
TANG Kwong Yue Alan (2004 Graduate)
I have learnt Four S from the BSW program, which are very useful and
rewarding for my further study and career development.
Solving problems: Through different trainings in curriculum, placement
and exchange opportunities, I could have the capability and flexibility
to search for the solutions to different challenges and problems.
Stimulating my interest: My horizons have been widened. I have
stronger desire to learn continuously.
Searching for the meaning of life: I understand myself more and have
the chance to reflect myself.
Striking for the excellence: One of the attitudes that I have nurtured is to
try my best to strike for the excellence.”
LING Wai Hang Henry (2007 Graduate)
Recipient of Outstanding Social Workers Award in 2009
The programme gave me a lot of opportunities to meet leaders
from different fields such as disabilities, expressive arts and various
psychotherapies. During the three-year time, I also learnt more
about self - recognising my strengths and became much confident
to present myself. HKU BSW not only equipped me be a registered
social worker, but also to be a passionate caring professional with
progressive and critical thinking.
