I was given a taste of handling clients from different backgrounds through case interviews, group discussions and community work. Being a youth worker in outreaching setting, counseling is the foremost work that I need to do. Lots of basic counseling skills were learnt from the program. They are important to facilitate effective counseling. More importantly, empathy is well-trained through the program. It makes me building up rapport easily with non-engaged youth, as well as providing therapeutic interviews with youngsters. LEUNG Kwok Tai (2014 Graduate) CHAN Ho Yan Herman (2012 Graduate) With the guidance of my teachers, I learnt to apply my social work knowledge and skillsets during the skills lab sessions. The intensive trainings not only equipped me to be more explorative and to think independently, but they also provided me with the organizational skills and leadership qualities required to overcome the challenges faced during my field placement and career. We currently have the most extensive coverage of overseas countries and the largest number of students undertaking international placements among local social work training institutes. Our students have left footprints all over the world, including Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and Mainland China. Students’ participation in a wide array of fieldwork settings provides them plenty of opportunities for value bombardment, creative problem-solving and adaptive adjustments. All are conducive to their personal and professional development. 6 HKU_BSW2014_Output_1027(J).indd 6 27/10/14 3:03 PM Student Voice Life is a journey, Put a spark in it. Students can explore social work and social welfare from a global perspective. Finland Exchange Programme W e provide financial support to students to participate in the Finland summer school which brings together students and instructors from different countries. Participants have opportunities to learn about the social welfare system and services in Finland. The programme includes lectures, small group discussions, agency visits, cultural events, and field trips. Special events such as the “international night” enable participants to share selected aspects of their culture in a relaxing informal atmosphere. 8 HKU_BSW2014_Output_1027(J).indd 8 27/10/14 3:03 PM Student Voice Having the opportunity to participate in the Finland Exchange programme has widened my horizons on the practices and theories that can be applied to social work. What really inspired me most was the commonality of the challenges we face around the world as social workers and despite the cultural differences, we can work together and share our experiences to improve the service we render to our clients. The new friends we make are an everlasting memory of the time we spent together there. In 2011 summer, I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to join the Finland exchange programme. By interacting with social work students from different parts of the world, I have learnt more about how social work is perceived and practiced in other countries. Also, I was inspired by how a country's culture and ideology can affect her social welfare and social services. This programme enabled me to review Hong Kong's welfare system with a different perspective and with new insight. NG Siu Hei Hayden (2014 Graduate) LAU Chin Wa Ruby (2013 Graduate) Other Exchange Opportunities T he University and the Faculty of Social Sciences have also established a wide range of undergraduate exchange programmes with universities all around the world to broaden students' cultural exposure.
