Dear Madison Community,
Dear Madison Community,
Thank you for your support and engagement in our public schools.
As the weather cools down and the trees begin to turn color, MSCR presents this menu of
fall, fun, healthy activities. Fall is a great time to be outdoors. We have many opportunities
for young people outside when the weather is great. How about 3v3 soccer leagues on
Sundays? Or register a child for swim lessons to polish up on swimming skills? Fall offers
many options for adults, including shorter season leagues in softball and volleyball, many
fitness options, art classes, dance and outdoor programs.
MSCR school based programs kick in the first week of school. MSCR staff members working
afterschool programs make sure children complete homework assignments and keep on
track academically. We provide academic support programs through Community Learning
Centers at many schools. We are connecting even more with families through family nights
focusing on literacy, math and science.
I hope you will find an activity or program for you and for other members of your family.
I, along with the MSCR staff, encourage you to stay active this fall!
We are on a mission to close the gaps in opportunity that lead to disparities in achievement,
and to ensure every child is academically challenged in a safe and supportive environment.
Together with our teachers, families, staff and community, we want to be the model of a
successful public school district.
We have made exciting progress as a district, which you can learn more about on our
website at mmsd.org/framework. As we move forward, we believe it’s going to take all of us
committing to three key core values.
- Sustained focus: We must stay incredibly focused on the day to day work of great
teaching and learning for all students. Laundry lists of ever-evolving “initiatives” are the
enemy of progress. Organizing district and community support around our schools and
classrooms is the key.
- Schools at the center: Teachers, principals and their families know their students best
and have the will and skill to be successful. We must engage, affirm and empower
them to solve problems together on behalf of all children.
Sincerely,
Lucy Chaffin
MSCR Executive Director
- Excellence with Equity: We must hold all children and all adults to high expectations
and provide the unique support they need to meet and exceed that high bar. With high
expectations and high support, our students will rise to the challenge of college career
and community readiness.
We are working harder than ever to bring our vision to life, and we hope you’ll join us. You
can see more about our progress as a district at mmsd.org/framework.
Madison School & Community Recreation is also a crucial part of our work. MSCR works
hard to ensure that our students have access to high-quality after school and summer programming, but they also offer affordable recreation opportunities for the community.
MSCR offers a wide variety of community programs, and I hope that you’ll take advantage of
some of the programs outlined in this guide.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Cheatham
MMSD Superintendent

Elementary Afterschool Programs
204-6561
MSCR provides afterschool programs in 16 MMSD elementary schools and 1 community center. The afterschool programs include Safe Haven childcare and Community Learning Center programs. Some schools
have both programs, and others only have one.
Community Learning Center programs (CLCs) provide afterschool academic support and enrichment
activities for all students living in the school attendance area who meet the grant criteria for academic
support, including those attending private or parochial schools and those who are home schooled. These
academic programs are typically called Afterschool Academic Centers for Excellence (AACE). Registration
takes place at the site.
Safe Haven childcare serves K-5th grade students. Registration is completed at each site on a first-come,
first-served basis. Site locations and phone numbers are listed below.

children. Young Star evaluates the quality of care given by regulated child care providers and rates them from 1 to 5 stars, with 5
stars being the highest rating. A provider’s star rating is based on:
• Education Qualifications and Training
• Learning Environment and Curriculum
• Professional and Business Practices
• Child Health and Well-Being Practices
Participation in YoungStar is voluntary. However, Safe Haven
programs that accept payments from Wisconsin’s Child Care
Subsidy program, Wisconsin Shares, are required to participate in
YoungStar. Wisconsin Shares assists families with child care costs.
MSCR Safe Haven programs are currently participating in YoungStar. We look forward to continual improvement of our school-age
programs.
“Thank you for doing this Community Learning Center. It really helps
our kids to improve their skills.”
“Having other trusted adults to work with my daughter’s math skills
makes a difference and helps to de-stress a difficult subject for her. Just
know how important all the afterschool staff are to the students and
parents!”

Safe Haven Child Care
As a part of the Madison Metropolitan School District, MSCR’s Safe Haven has provided
quality child care since 1992. Safe Haven was established with the belief that all children
need a safe and enriching place to spend their afterschool hours, while their parents are at
work or school.
AT SAFE HAVEN WE:
• Provide youth with activities and skills that enhance physical and
cognitive capabilities and build self esteem
• Teach youth alternative ways to solve conflict
• Build teamwork and cooperation skills
RECREATIONAL & EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
MSCR offers fun and educational activities.
• Creative art and enrichment projects
• Homework/academic help
• Special events and field trips
• Active play
• Free choice time
• Opportunities to make new friends
STAFFING
MSCR makes every effort to hire diverse, qualified, caring and professional staff who have
experience, education, and a desire to work with youth in a recreation setting. All employees have passed a background check through the Wisconsin Department of
Justice and a TB test. We take pride in the quality of our staff and maintain high standards
by training staff in a variety of topics including: CPR, behavior management, supervision,
health and safety, age appropriate practices and other related topics. MSCR provides a 10:1
child to staff ratio.
EARLY-RELEASE & NO-SCHOOL DAYS
MSCR Safe Haven programs operate on scheduled early-release days.
Full day programming on no-school days is available at certain locations for an additional
fee (pre-registration is required). However, Safe Haven does not operate on holidays, during
winter or spring break or when school is closed due to weather.

New Places, New Spaces!
MSCR Eastside
Coming Soon!
MSCR is excited to open a new east side program space at 4620 Cottage Grove Road. Staff wrote and
received grants from the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation and the Madison Community
Foundation to fund a significant portion of the remodeling and furnishing costs for this new program
site. The facility will have several activity rooms to hold 50+ fitness classes, adult and family fitness,
arts, dance and other programs.
For many years MSCR has struggled to find adequate program space on the east side of Madison. We
are very excited to be working with owner Kevin Metcalfe on this project. The location is expected to
open in December 2015, with a full menu of programs slated to start in January 2016. Look for details in
November.
Meadowood Neighborhood Center Expansion
In February 2015 the Meadowood Neighborhood Center relocated next door into the reconstructed former Meadowridge Library space. This move has doubled our square footage and increased our number
of programming areas from one to four, including an art room, multipurpose activity room, gaming room
and general center space with a computer lab. The new space also includes a food pantry and a small
meeting room. In addition, the former neighborhood center space has been remodeled into two community rooms and a community kitchen. The unique design of the center allows for the flow of traffic
between the neighborhood center, community rooms and new Meadowridge Library.
New Welcome
Center at the Kennedy Challenge Course
MSCR is pleased to acknowledge Madison College Construction and Trades and Operation Fresh
Start for their work on the new Elements Welcome Center at the Challenge Course located at 5025
Sudbury Way behind Kennedy Elementary School!
Madison College students built the walls during fall semester and trucked them to the site in February. Students and instructors braved 10 degree weather to erect the walls and roof trusses. Operation Fresh Start crews have installed the roofing, siding, fascia, windows and doors. The building
will have a group gathering area, two restrooms and a water fountain/bottle filling station.
MSCR manages the Kennedy Challenge Course which is used for the MSCR Elements Team Building program. Elements provides trained staff who facilitate group
activities to improve communication, problem solving, develop trust and give participants an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone in a safe learning
environment.
The Elements program serves around 5,000 participants annually including MMSD students, corporate organizations, non-profits, and community groups. In summer
of 2015, the Elements Program also offered specialty Challenge Course events including Swing Into Summer, Family Adventure Day, and Zipline and Dine.
For more information on the MSCR Elements program visit us online at www.mscr.org or call 204-3025.

Before You Swim - General Policies Aquatic
Programs
No locker room attendants on duty.
However, locker room checks are made periodically by the aquatics staff. Youth who are 6 years of age or older must
use appropriate locker rooms. Please remain in the locker room until your class time. Pool staff will announce when
it is time to enter the pool area.
What to bring?
Participants must bring their own suits, locks and towels. Patrons are allowed to bring bags and towels to the spectator area. MSCR is not responsible for any lost or damaged items. Showers must be taken before swimming and
long hair must be restrained. An adult must accompany spectators under the age of 12 on the pool deck and in the
bleacher area at all times. Please plan accordingly. No street shoes or strollers allowed on the pool deck. You will
be asked to remove your shoes. We recommend swimmers and spectators wear clean water shoes or sandals.
Pool temperatures and maintenance are regulated by the School District maintenance departments, not MSCR. Requests have been made for varying swim water and air temperature. Due
to various activities in the swimming pool, the maintenance department is making every attempt to maintain the High School pool temperature at 79 degrees. This may be cold for some
swimmers so, we recommend wearing a swim cap and/or a clean t-shirt. Lapham pool is a warm water pool.
In the event that a class is canceled due to maintenance problems a free one-time swim pass is issued.

Learn–to-Swim Youth- Ages 5 - 13
Fitness Swimming and Technique
Youth Technique– ages 8-13
Participants build strength and endurance while gaining a better understanding of stroke
mechanics and technique. Instructors work on stroke technique for freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke, butterfly and turns in a fun, non-competitive environment. Swimmers must have
a background of the four basic strokes and be able to complete 25 yards of each stroke on
the first day. Please bring water bottle and swim cap to every class.
Teen/Adult Swim Instruction
This class orients you to the aquatic environment so you feel comfortable in the water. Learn
basic swim strokes and water safety techniques.
Adult Water Fitness
SHALLOW WATER Aerobics
The ‘coolest’ way to increase flexibility, muscle strength and endurance. You do not need to
be a swimmer to participate in this shallow water class.
DEEP WATER Aerobics
Ready to go into the deep end? This is the perfect class to burn calories. We provide the
flotation belts but, you should feel comfortable in deep water prior to registering. Teens age
13-16 may register with an adult participant.
Deep Water Running
This non-impact class is a great way to maintain fitness during the cooler months and
prevent workout boredom. Deep water adds resistance and a new challenge as you run your
way through intervals, races, cross-country courses and sprints. This is ideal for athletes or
water-activity enthusiasts. No swimming or running experience necessary. Participants must
be comfortable in water – flotation devices are used.
Gentle Water Moves
Enjoy gentle movement in a warm water pool. These exercises contribute to fitness and
health; build endurance, flexibility, and muscle strength. Taught by a certified aquatics
instructor. Swim caps optional, bring a lock and towel.
A variety of swim aids are utilized in all class levels, to encourage the discovery of independent movement through the water and to assist in building endurance.
Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills
Prerequisite: Must be 5 years old. No swimming skills necessary.
Begin developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around
the water.
Water Safety Instructor Training Program
Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Gives participants success with fundamental skills, including how to float without support
and recover to a vertical position.
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor program is designed to train instructor
candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Swimming and Water Safety
program (Learn to Swim, Longfellow’s Whale Tales, Pre-School and Parent Aquatics) .
Participants learn how to use the course materials, conduct training sessions, evaluate
participants’ progress, and develop fundamental teaching skills.
Level 3 – Stroke Development
Builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water.
Level 4 – Stroke Improvement
Helps develop confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and improves other
aquatic skills.
Level 5 – Stroke Refinement
Teaches how to coordinate and refine strokes.
Take WSI with MSCR! The course takes place 5 Sundays beginning September 20.
Please contact 204-3019 for more detailed information, locations, times and fees.
Upon completion of the class, instructor candidates should be able to:
•
Identify strategies for planning and preparing effective and safe swim lessons,
•
dentify class management skills and strategies,
•
Develop their observational skills,
•
Effectively communicate about participants’ progress in swim lessons, and
•
Learn how to accommodate different participants, based on their needs.
Level 6 – Swimming Skill and Proficiency
Works on refining strokes with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances.

Low Challenge Course Programs
Our half day programs typically last 3-4 hours and give participants the opportunity to work
together to meet specific goals. The focus is on the group development process; activities
get progressively more challenging throughout the day. We work with you to tailor these
programs to your desired outcome. We intentionally frame experiences based on skills that
participants can use back at their work, school or home environment.
Low and High Challenge Course Programs
Full day programs last 6-7 hours and participants take the skills and group awareness they
gain in the morning to new heights. After being properly outfitted and trained to help with
safety procedures, groups have the opportunity to climb, swing, jump and zip up to 30 feet
off the ground. Full day programs offer an opportunity for groups to engage in positive risk
taking while challenging members in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone has a role in
the process, so if some are more comfortable staying on the ground they still fully participate
with the group.
Mobile Programs
Can’t make it out to the course or think your group would prefer an indoor experience? We
can bring the equipment and props to your site. These programs are fully catered to your
needs and can be hosted at a site of your choosing; all we need is open space. If you don’t
have available spaces we can help arrange accommodations for your group at an indoor site
or park in the Madison area.
Facilitators
Elements staff are trained in group development and awareness, group processing and
technical safety procedures for the challenge courses. They come from a variety of different
backgrounds ranging from professional rock climbing guides, school teachers, youth work,
leadership development and organizational development. Our goal is to serve your group
with the most appropriate staff possible, therefore we match our staff and their skills to your
group.

Challenge yourself! Join us at the High Challenge Course behind Kennedy Elementary on
Madison’s east side for our special events. Trained facilitators get you suited in safety gear
to climb, jump and zip line up to 35ft in the air. All activities are challenge by choice, so
even if you’re not comfortable climbing all the way up, there’s plenty to do to stay involved.
Climbing is for ages 10+ and participants under 16 years of age must register with an adult.
Additional information including directions, parking information, and waivers are sent prior
to the program.

Visiting Artist Nick DeVries
Primarily working on the wheel, Nick DeVries makes forms based in a tradition of function
and use. His work has large areas of subtle texture balanced with small additions, stamps
and details. He often throws heavier forms, alters them through carving and shaving to
reveal new forms. Nick’s studio is in the northeast Minneapolis Art District. Additional artist
information can be found at www.devriespottery.com Saturday’s workshop consists of a
brief conversation about Nick’s work and approach to clay work. Followed by an interactive
throwing demo. Lunch is included. Sunday’s workshop consists of trimming, finishing and
