For Training Purposes Only 1 June 2005 Pg 01-1 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL DESIGN FEATURES HISTORY OF CRJ700, CRJ900 AND CRJ705 INTRODUCTION The CRJ700 series and CRJ900 series regional jet aircraft are designed for the short- to medium-range airline markets. The model designator for these aircraft are as follows: • CRJ700: CL-600-2C10 • CRJ900: CL-600-2D24 • CRJ705: CL-600-2D15 General features of the CRJ700, CRJ900 and CRJ705 aircraft include: • Quiet, fuel efficient, high bypass turbofan engines. • State-of-the-art avionics system featuring six ‘glass’ displays, digital data communications and an advanced maintenance diagnostic system. • Advanced technology wings with polished leading edge slats. • Modern airframe structure with composite material used in non-structural areas. • Class C forward and aft cargo compartments with convenient external access. • Wide fuselage with 4 abreast seating. • Several configuration options for location of lavatories and galley. • Flexible cabin layout options including mixed seat-pitch and two class interiors. The CL-600-2C10 aircraft is the first variant of the CRJ200. Product improvements include but are not limited to a longer fuselage, FADEC-controlled engines, a new wing with leading edge slats, a forward cargo compartment, and upgraded automated aircraft systems. This aircraft is marketed as the CRJ700 (68 seats), the CRJ701 (70 seats) and the CRJ702 (77 seats). It is available in a standard or extended range version. The CL-600-2D24 aircraft is the second variant of the CRJ200. Product improvements (compared to the CRJ200 series aircraft) include but are not limited to a longer fuselage, FADEC-controlled engines, a new wing with leading edge slats, a forward cargo compartment, and upgraded automated aircraft systems. This aircraft is marketed as the CRJ900 (up to 90 seats). It, too, is available in standard or extended range versions. Later, short field takeoff and landing performance improvements were introduced. Performance improvements consisted of a larger wingspan due to bigger winglets, software changes, new slat/flap relationship with an added selection of Flap 20, and an optional long range version. The CL-600-2D15 aircraft is the third CRJ200 variant. This variant is identical to the improved CL-600-2D24 series 900 aircraft except that it is only certified for a maximum of 75 passengers and is marketed as the CRJ705 (75 seats). 01 - AIRCRAFT GENERAL Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only 1 June 2005 Pg 01-7 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL AIRFRAME STRUCTURE The fuselage is a semi-monocoque, all-metal, damage-tolerant structure, using an aluminum alloy, chemically milled skin with riveted stringers and frames. The forward fuselage contains the radome, flight compartment, forward pressure bulkhead, forward avionics bay, main passenger entrance and support mountings for the nose landing gear. The center fuselage contains the passenger compartment, main avionics bay, forward cargo compartment, and the structural wing attachment. CRJ705/900: a 90 in (229 cm) structural plug is installed forward of the wing box on the center fuselage section. The rear fuselage contains the pylon structure, rear pressure bulkhead, cargo compartment, support structure for the vertical stabilizer, the aft equipment bay and tail cone. CRJ705/900: a 62 in (157.5 cm) structural plug is installed aft of the wing box on the center fuselage section. Two pressure bulkheads and a pressure floor make the midcenter fuselage ‘D’ shaped. This provides an area external to the pressure zone where the wing attaches to the fuselage. CRJ705/900: the dorsal strake is not installed on the aircraft, however ventral fins are installed on the base of the fuselage. The fins increase the directional stiffness of the aircraft. Relative to the CRJ700, the ventral fins offset the effects of the fuselage stretch and eliminates the need for the fuselage upper strake. The single piece wing is an all-metal structure consisting of machined upper and lower aluminum alloy planks with integral stringers covering the spar, ribs and a central box structure. CRJ705/900: a new winglet is installed which increases the wingspan by 5 ft, 4 in. The auxiliary rear spar provides structural support for the main landing gear trunnion. The main landing gear retracts into the aft section of the center box structure. The wing has provisions for the installation of ailerons, slats, two-section slotted flaps, ground spoilers, multifunction flight spoilers and space for fuel storage. The vertical stabilizer is a fully-cantilevered, swept-back design with a swept-back horizontal stabilizer mounted on the top edge. The leading edges of the wing, slats, vertical and horizontal stabilizers are fabricated using aluminum alloy. Composite materials are used in the aircraft secondary structures such as the radome, winglets, belly fairings, landing gear doors and empennage top fairings. CRJ705/900: has a reinforced wing. CRJ700: a dorsal strake is installed on top of the fuselage of the CRJ700 to make an aerodynamic transition between the top of the fuselage and the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer. 01 - AIRCRAFT GENERAL Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only 1 June 2005 Pg 01-9 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL SERVICING / TOWING / TAXIING Typical aircraft servicing includes general replenishing of consumables as well as scheduled and unscheduled servicing. The aircraft is normally controlled by using a nosewheel steering system. The aircraft can also be controlled without the steering system by the use of differential thrust and braking. The maximum steering limit when taxiing is 80° either left or right side of center. The aircraft can be pushed or towed with the tow bar connected to the axle of the nose landing gear (NLG). The steering torque arms may be connected or disconnected depending on towing equipment used. The nosewheel steering system switch must be selected OFF before towing. An approved tow-barless towing vehicle may also be used. A dual pin quick disconnect mechanism, integral to the upper torque arm, connects the upper and lower torque arms. The recommended steering angle limit when towing is 70° either side of center with torque arm connected or disconnected. Disconnection isolates the steering collar and the steering actuators, preventing damage to the steering actuator system. When disconnected, the spring-loaded torque arms separate and rotate into a safe fixed position to maintain its position clear of the nose wheels and the aft door during towing. Landing gear lock pins must be installed when the aircraft is on ground. An underfloor compartment holds ventilated equipment racks on the left and right sides with a lower fuselage access door along the fuselage centerline. AFT CARGO / BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT FS959.50 The aft cargo compartment provides sufficient space for the storage of cargo and passenger baggage. A restraint net is installed across the cargo door entrance to prevent baggage from blocking the door if shifting occurs during flight.
