iPADS HAVE ARRIVED!
Congratulations Class of 2013 | Auction Wrap-up
FROM THE PRESIDENT
ON THE COVER
Dear Friends
Gratitude-Pride-Innovation-Excellence-Blessings,
all words that come to mind as I gather my
thoughts for this edition of The Avenue.
Gratitude, because of the generosity of our alumni, families, and friends who
contribute to the Annual Fund in support of our financial aid program. My thanks
also to everyone who volunteers, contributes to, and attends the annual auction. Their generosity supports the BK Boosters’ efforts to support academic,
athletic, and extra-curricular activities throughout each school year.
Pride, because our students accomplish so much in the areas of academics,
athletics, and service, especially our recent graduates. I am confident that the
287 members of the Class of 2013 who graduated on May 25 at a ceremony
held at the University of North Florida will be alumni in whom we can take
great pride.
Innovation, because our principal Todd Orlando, and his academic leadership team, have taken important steps to keep us abreast of technology in
education and have successfully implemented a three-year plan that culminates this year with every student beginning the school year with an iPad in
hand. Our next step will see a dramatic renovation of the media center which
will turn it into a state-of-the-art learning and technology center for our faculty
and students. We will unveil drawings and more detailed plans related to the
project in an upcoming edition of this publication.
Excellence, because of the dedication of all those on the faculty, administration,
and staff who are committed to maintaining the high standards of life and learning
for which Bishop Kenny High School has always been known. These talented and
dedicated individuals bring to life what we envision for our students.
And Blessings, as I mark the beginning of my 25th year as President of
Bishop Kenny. I can’t help but reflect on all that has been accomplished since
accepting Bishop Snyder’s invitation to assume this important position back in 1989. Not only have I
been privileged to guide BK and its
students into the 21st century, I
have been blessed to do it in the
company of many fine colleagues
and friends.
Please know how grateful all of
us on the administration, faculty,
and staff are for all that you do to
support the mission of BKHS. You
and your intentions are remembered whenever Mass is celebrated
in our Chapel.
Sincerely yours in the Lord,
Rev. Michael R. Houle ‘71
President

Bishop Kenny Students Celebrate Year of Faith
With Pilgrimage to Washington, DC
T
hey came from all over the United States, 650,000 strong, to join in
the 2013 March for Life in Washington, DC. Grandparents and grandchildren, toddlers and teens, expectant moms, as well as those who
now regret their decision to have had an abortion. The March for Life
is a peaceful protest of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized
abortion in the United States of America.
Their message to the President and law-makers and to all
Americans was simple: life is sacred in all of its forms from conception
until natural death. Among the crowd were nearly 40 students and
faculty from Bishop Kenny High School.
“A pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception seemed to be most suitable during this Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI”, said Deacon Bob De Luca. “We began
our plans for the pilgrimage in the spring of 2012”.
The pilgrimage included participation in the Vigil Mass at the
National Shrine and Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on
Thursday night. Homilist for the Mass was Sean Cardinal O’Malley,
OFM Capuchin, Archbishop of Boston. Concelebrating with him
were two other Cardinals, ten Bishops, nearly 200 priests, 80 deacons,
and 720 seminarians. The entrance procession alone took 45 minutes and the Basilica was filled to capacity both in the Upper Church
and in the lower Crypt.
Bishop Felipe Estévez joined Bishop Kenny’s group of
March for Life participants in Washington, DC.
Friday included participation in the Youth Rally and Mass for Life
at the Comcast Center located on the Campus of the University of
Maryland. From there we took the Metro to Washington, DC to join
in the March for Life on the 40th anniversary of the legalization of
abortion in the United States. It was nice having Bishop Estévez
marching right along with us.
Deacon De Luca went on to say, “In the little spare time we had,
we were able to visit the Smithsonian Museum of History and pay a
brief visit to Arlington National Cemetery.” He added, “We are most
grateful to the BK Boosters for their generous assistance in the
amount of $5,000, without which the trip would not have been possible”.
Students are already talking about 2014. The bus will depart
Bishop Kenny High School on Monday, January 20 and return to
campus on Friday, January 24. We plan to stay at the Hilton
Alexandria Mark Center Hotel. Highlights will be Opening Mass for
Life at the National Shrine, Youth Mass and Rally (location to be
announced), participation in the March for Life, and much more.
(L-R) Monica Pritchard, Mary Kate Truss and Michael Farrell at March for Life
Deacon Robert De Luca and a bus full of enthusiastic
students traveled to Washington, DC to participate in
the 2013 March for Life in January.

Cover Story
Create – Collaborate – Curate
T
he cover of this issue features students using their new iPads.
Bishop Kenny is proud to be the first school in Northeast
Florida to have introduced a complete 1:1 iPad deployment
this year. It has been a longtime coming with many hours of
research and planning logged and, now as we take this historic
step, we are confident that we have made the right decision and
are on the right path toward ensuring that our students graduate
with the tools that they will need in college and in life.
Each year during pre-planning Principal Todd Orlando introduces a theme that he would like the faculty to focus on throughout the school year. This year’s theme; create, collaborate, and
curate was selected because the C’s are critical to integrating the
use of iPad technology into our college-prep curriculum.
While it is still true that it is the responsibility of teachers to
direct and lead the learning process, the first of the C’s – create –
challenges students to become creators of their own personal
collections of supplemental resources. By seeking eResources,
downloading apps and, in general, finding material that speaks to
them, students will enhance the “required” materials selected by
their teachers.
When students find useful supplemental resources, they will
be encouraged to collaborate with classmates as well as teachers,
sharing apps and websites during class time that bring their lessons to life. Will this go on in all subject areas? Yes! There are
resources for all subject areas available. Finding, keeping, organizing, and sharing information using Schoology and Google Apps
for Education, these resources all contribute to developing a digital skill set that will be useful to students not only in high school,
but absolutely necessary in college as well.
And, finally, students will learn not only how to access this
information and share it with others, but will also learn to curate
information. First, they will learn to sift through the enormous
amount of information available to them and identify the
resources useful and meaningful to them. Then, they will share
what they’ve found and, finally, they will learn to keep the information organized and accessible for future use.
It is a tall order that we have in front of us, but we are ready
for the challenge and our students will be the beneficiaries of
this leap into the next phase of mastering the 21st century skills
that will help them into the next phase of learning.
Digital Citizenship
Students and teachers
are finding that iPads
are useful from the
Science Lab to the art
room and beyond.
While it is true that technology offers teachers and students
a world of opportunity for learning, it also brings with it a world of
challenges and responsibilities. Bishop Kenny High School has
elected to block Facebook, Instagram and all other non-educational apps on its school-issued iPads. Administrators have determined, however, that because virtually all of our students have
internet access through personal devices, that it is our responsibility to help them understand the consequences of irresponsible
use of the internet especially through careless and inappropriate
use of social media.
The Office of the Dean of Students presents informative programs for parents and students to teach the safe and responsible
use of the internet and social media. A parent program, presented
at the beginning of each school year focuses on current issues facing students in their use of the internet. Students attend required
programs such as the one last spring by nationally known speaker Richard Guerry author of Public and Permanent. Mr. Guerry’s
presentation, a very real discussion about appropriate social
media behaviors, cyber bullying, Facebook posting, etc. was
designed to help students understand the permanent nature of
any and all information that they share on the internet. Principal
Todd Orlando adds, “Students need to learn that technology
which is, and will continue to be, such a big part of their lives must
be used responsibly and with the knowledge that everything on
the internet should be considered permanent and traceable back
to the person who put it there; that’s why we will continue to
stress the importance of good digital citizenship.”

Mr. Tim Yocum
Technology Integration Specialist
Integrating iPads into the curriculum of a college-prep school goes far
beyond taking delivery of 1,200 devices
from the Apple Store, and it requires
more than teachers and even students
who are pretty good with an iPad.
Enter Tim Yocum, a career Catholic
educator who has worked as a classroom
teacher, mentor, coach, and technology
integrator at BK for the past 22 years. Mr.
Yocum has moved from the classroom to
assume the newly-created position of
Technology Integration Specialist. Headquarters for Mr. Yocum is the Media
Center where he will be available to students and teachers to assist with
problems as small as I forgot my password to assisting teachers with technology-based lesson plans and presentations. Mr. Yocum added, “In addition to being available in the Media Center, I plan to spend a good bit of
time in classrooms throughout the year as well.”
Tim Yocum holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North
Florida and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a specialization in Integrated
Learning Technologies from Jacksonville University. He has held a variety
of teaching positions that have allowed personal growth and continual
learning throughout his career.
These include sixth grade science, social studies and religion,
physical education from grades 3
through 12, coaching and mentoring athletes in a variety of
sports, yearbook adviser, multimedia/photography instructor,
technology support and integration specialist, presenting professional development classes, and
advising
the
staff
of
CrusaderVison - Bishop Kenny’s
live broadcast program. Tim is
competent in hardware and software support/repair on Windows and Apple computers. He is proficient in
the use of Final Cut, iWork, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, Adobe CS 5 Suite
(Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver), Google Apps, MS Office,
WordPress, and many other software applications and web-based applications.
Building on a platform of project-based learning within a collaborative environment, Tim believes, “The classroom should be an environment
where students have the ability to freely explore their interests in depth.
The primary goal is that students are able to successfully collect information, curate information, and collaborate on projects that allow critical
thinking skills to develop individually and collectively.”
Tim continues to grow professionally through ongoing professional
development that includes active engagement with his online
Professional/Personal Learning Network, attendance at conferences such
as FETC and ISTE, attendance at technology and project-based learning
workshops such as MERIT, maintaining a valid Florida Educator’s Certificate,
and presenting at the Florida Yearbook Seminar.
Tim’s ultimate vision is that each student become a lifelong learner
and be able to adapt and adjust to the rapidly changing technologies available for learning and the quickly evolving job market that awaits them
upon graduation.
The Road to a Digital School
I
n a letter dated June 2012, Bishop Kenny Principal
Todd Orlando shared his plan to deploy a complete
1:1 iPad initiative at Bishop Kenny High School. In the
letter he shared:
The evidence is overwhelming; there’s so much more to
the story than just replacing traditional books with
eBooks. The iPad will be an invaluable tool that will
enhance the excellent academic program that has
always been offered at Bishop Kenny High School.
Not without its challenges, this project has required
significant infrastructure modifications to make all 55acres and BK’s cement block structures Wi-Fi accessible.
Beyond that, the academic and administrative departments have invested the past two years in research,
planning, webinars, visits to other schools, meetings
with Apple representatives, policy development, committee meetings, faculty meetings and, finally, the
search for eBooks.
Fast forward to summer 2013 and the beginning of
the third year of the iPad implementation plan.
Beginning in July, every BK student and at least one parent attended an iPad Orientation session in the Carla
Harris Performing Arts Center. In all, twelve programs
were held to accommodate the schedules of all BK families. At the orientation program, iPads, each complete
with a military grade cover that will, in the words of Mr.
Orlando, “give us a fighting chance to protect the glass
screen, the most easily and commonly broken part of
the device,” were distributed. Mr. Orlando reviewed the
school’s Acceptable Use Policy, walked students
through iPad set-up including student’s E-mail, Apple
ID, iCloud, eResources, and more. He also explained that
the iPad is intended for educational purposes and, in
that spirit, Facebook, Instagram, music, games and, in
short, all of the non-academic features have been
blocked.
At the end of the first week of the 2013 school year,
Mr. Orlando, happy with the results of two long years of
planning shared, “It makes sense that we would have
taken this step. We’ve done our homework and know
that our students will have many advantages because
of the iPads. They are fortunate to be taking this step at
this time. It’s the way things are done now…it’s just that
simple.”

Senior Students Become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
T
he Rite of Commissioning Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion took place during morning Mass on August 12 and
13, 2013 in the Bishop Tanner Chapel. In order to accommodate
the large class of 85 ministers, two installation rites were necessary.
Presiding at the Mass was Father Michael Houle, President, assisted by
Deacon Robert De Luca, Campus Minister.
The newly commissioned Special Ministers of Holy Communion
were entrusted with administering the Eucharist, with taking communion
to the sick, and with giving viaticum to the dying. During the homily,
Father Houle reminded the Special Ministers that they must be examples
of Christian living in faith and conduct. He encouraged them to strive to
grow in holiness through this sacrament of unity and love.
“Eucharistic Ministers serve the Bishop Kenny community by assisting
with the distribution of Holy Communion at daily Mass and whenever
we gather for the Eucharist as a school community,” says Deacon Robert
De Luca, Director of Campus Ministry and Religious Education. In a brief
address to the parents who gathered for the celebration, he went on to
say, “How very proud I am of each and every one of these members of
our community, who came forward of their own free will requesting to
be more involved in Campus Ministry and to serve as Extraordinary

Farewell to Sr. Edith Paschall, SSJ
A special Mass and luncheon honoring
Sister Edith Paschall, SSJ was held during
pre-planning meetings in August. Sister
Edith, who retired from teaching at the
end of the last school year, now lives at
the Mother House of the Sisters of Saint
Joseph in St. Augustine. Many members
of the BK community, past and present,
gathered to honor Sister at the event.
Principal Todd Orlando congratulates Sr. Edith
Paschall, SSJ at the luncheon honoring her 32
years of service at Bishop Kenny High School.
Thank you, Sr. Edith!
At Mass, Father Houle thanked Sister for
her thirty-two years of service to the BK
community. His remarks were also directed to Sister Jane Stoecker, SSJ General
Superior of the Sisters of Saint Joseph
who, along with former BK faculty members Sr. Suzan Foster and Sr. Carol Stovall
joined Sr. Edith at her table of invited
guests.
Father’s remarks (see insert)
served as an acknowledgement of the
debt of gratitude that is owed to the
nearly eighty Sisters of St. Joseph whose
combined years of service to the stu-
dents of BKHS total over 250 years!
Principal Todd Orlando extended his personal gratitude and best wishes to
Sister and also that of the faculty and staff. He then introduced two speakers Religion Department Chairman Deacon Robert De Luca and longtime foreign language teacher and personal friend of Sister Edith, Mrs. Diane Herbert, who retired
from BK two years ago. Each came forward to say a few words in celebration of
the dedicated service of their friend and colleague who served the BK community faithfully for over three decades and, in that time, taught an estimated 5,000
students. Deacon De Luca summed it up best, “So often I marveled at your ability to balance so many different assignments; you did it all in a great spirit of
humility and in the quiet cordial manner of Saint Joseph.”
“
Sister Edith, we are all grateful and give
thanks to God for your many years of service at
Bishop Kenny High School. Sister Jane, to you
and the many Sisters of your community who
have served here for six decades, since this
school’s founding, we are grateful to you and
give thanks to God not only for the Sisters’ dedication and service, but also for the mark each
one has left on the school and its students and
its mission – but even more importantly, how
your community has set God’s own seal upon
this school, its mission, and its future – a seal
that will guide it forevermore. I believe strongly
that those people and places where God has
sent his religious, whether for a short while or a
long time, that those people and places have
been extraordinarily blessed. Those people and
places have had in their midst, sent from God,
religious who because of their vows and the
example of their consecrated lives have taught
them the most important of life’s lessons – how
to lead this life with hearts, eyes, and minds
firmly set on the life of the world to come.
— Reverend Michael Houle
Mr. Orlando presented Sister with a commemorative plaque and token of
our collective appreciation for thirty-two years of service. The sentiment was
unanimous and the applause heartfelt for a friend and colleague who made a significant and lasting impact on the history Bishop Kenny High School.

Ministers of Holy Communion. I am deeply touched by their reverence and devotion
to the Holy Eucharist.”
Candidates for this ministry participate in a retreat day held at the Marywood
Retreat Center during the spring of their junior year. A special feature of the training is
hearing from some of the graduating seniors who shared with the candidates how participating in the ministry helped them to grow deeper in their Catholic faith.
Fr. Houle congratulates Anna DeSalvo and
presents her with a medallion on the occasion
of her becoming an Extraordinary Minister of
Holy Communion.

AUCTION REPORT
27th BK Boosters Auction
his year’s BK Boosters auction which was held on the same weekend as
St. Patrick’s Day realized a net profit of just over $100,000. The money
will be used throughout the coming year to help offset the costs of
post-season team transportation, team uniforms, equipment, and a myriad
of other financial requests yet to be imagined! The bidding on the more
than 500 items that were donated was fast-paced and the crowd enjoyed
the evening thoroughly.
T
This year marked the 15th year in a row that our friends at Carrabba’s
Italian Grill have provided a delicious buffet dinner featuring chicken
marsala and steak marsala to a hungry auction crowd. Every item is freshly
cooked and beautifully presented to nearly 500 appreciative guests.
Following dinner, auction-goers enjoyed the delicious ice cream desserts
donated by the Devenny family, operators of Bruster’s Ice Cream.
Decorating Committee Barbara Weiss and Silvia Morrill enjoyed
adding a bit o’green to the BK gymnasium for our St. Patrick’s Day
weekend auction this year.
The auction is not only successful in raising funds to help defray costs
and underwrite projects to enhance the quality of extracurricular and athletic programs for our students, but it also brings volunteers together. It
requires months of planning and a committee of approximately 100 parents
and friends of BK to put it all together. Volunteers, old and new, are always
needed so please keep your eyes peeled for meeting notices and
announcements about auction work days; and don’t forget to mark your calendar and plan to join us on auction night - March 22, 2014.
Our thanks is extended to all of the people, past and present, who have
been a part of the auction’s growth and ask that all of our alumni, parents,
and friends help make this event continue to thrive well into the future.

CLASS OF 2013
Graduation Week 2013
61st Graduating Class of BKHS
G
raduation week is full of activities for members of the senior class and their families to enjoy. The activities
begin with an Awards Program and Reception on Thursday night at the University of North Florida.
Graduation Mass is held the following day at St. Joseph Church in Mandarin, and the week concludes on
Saturday morning with commencement exercises at the University of North Florida.
A class snapshot would tell you that the Class of 2013 is made up of 287 graduates. 100% were accepted to college, and 64.1% earned a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. The class earned nearly $10 million dollars in college scholarships and performed 85,273 hours of community service during their high school careers.
Senior Awards
The Senior Awards Program, held at the University of North Florida, saw students gather to collect more than 600 certificates, trophies, scholarships, medals, appointments, and even a few oversized presentation checks! Many knew why they
had been invited, and others were surprised when their names were called to accept special awards. A complete list of all
of the scholarships and awards presented to the Class of 2013 is printed in this publication.
Graduation Mass
Graduation Mass, which is held at St. Joseph’s
Church in Mandarin, is always a special event as it
marks the final time that classmates will attend Mass
as a group. This year’s celebrant was Rev. D. Terrence
Morgan, graduate of the BK Class of 1967.
Commencement
A capacity crowd gathered to be
a part of graduation Mass.
Rev. Fr. D. Terrence Morgan, BK Class of
1967, was the Celebrant at this year’s
graduation Mass held at St. Joseph’s
Church in Mandarin.
The week concluded with the 61st commencement exercises of Bishop Kenny High School. The ceremony was held bright and early on Saturday, May 25
at the University of North Florida. Sr. Elizabeth Worley,
SSJ, a member of the Bishop Kenny Class of 1963,
delivered the customary address to the graduates
and Bishop Felipe Estévez presented diplomas to
each proud graduate. In her address, Sr. Elizabeth,
whose remarks were at the same time thoughtful
and entertaining, shared the following:
You have developed the capacity to explore
and to analyze, to organize, to hypothesize, to communicate and convince, to collaborate, to negotiate, to build community, to think independently – you
have the skills now to do it all – To do
good and to do well! For a lifetime! All of this learning prepares
you to work hard in college, to aspire to great things in life, to
make a significant contribution to society – and as some of you
told me you hope – to get a job. But in the end, the simplest
thing I pray you have learned – and learned very well – is really
the most important. Blessed Pope John Paul II told us the
secret. “When you dream of real and lasting happiness, it is
Jesus you seek. And to seek Him is to follow His way.”
We hope that our graduates will remember these words and that their
futures will indeed be bright. They join the 60 classes that have graduated before them and now count themselves among the 14,500 men
and women that comprise the alumni of Bishop Kenny High School.
Sr. Elizabeth Worley, SSJ, Bishop Kenny Class
of 1963, delivered the commencement
address for the Class of 2013.

Senior Awards 2013
T
he Senior Awards Program is one of the highlights of graduation week. Held at the
University of North Florida, parents of seniors come to watch their students as they
are called forward to accept the many scholarships, service awards, and other presentations made at the program. Vice-Principal Mary DeSalvo served as emcee of this year’s
ceremony. After welcoming the assembled parents, students, and special guests, Mrs.
DeSalvo invited student council president, Ariel Navotas to begin the program with a prayer.
In addition to many of the scholarship presentations that were made and are listed in
the master list of scholarships printed in this publication, the following memorial awards
were presented to members of the Class of 2013. These awards are given annually in tribute to people who, each in their own way, left a mark on our school.

AROUND CAMPUS

SUMMER CAMPUS at BK
ishop Kenny High School hosted a new concept summer camp for rising sixth, seventh
and eighth grade students in June. Young people from throughout the Diocese were
invited to participate in CampUS, a weeklong opportunity to explore the BK campus, make
new friends from Catholic and non-Catholic schools, and most importantly, to explore their
creative side.
B
All of the counselors were BK faculty members – each of whom enthusiastically developed their own exciting one-day curricula for campers, most of whom were experiencing an
up-close look at Bishop Kenny for the first time. Campers rotated
through five fun-filled classes during the week and in each setting
were encouraged to expand their horizons by exploring cooking,
music, art, wacky science, and a real camp favorite – making duck
tape creations including koozies, hair accessories, and wallets. All
of the creations were completely functional. Daily projects, especially the edible ones, were taken home for mom and dad to see
and taste! A daily mid-day break with outdoor games and popsicles was also a big hit during the fun-filled week.
Wacky Science - Music Duck Tape Creations and More!
Campers eagerly jumped in to explore
their creative talents at BK's newest summer camp. Each day
the campers, who were broken into five groups, were immersed
in a different daylong activity. Counselors reported that they
had as much fun as the kids!
Patterned after a traditional school day, campers arrived bright
and early at 8:00 am with pick-up at 3:00 pm. Lunch, prepared by
the BK cafeteria, was included in the cost of registration, as was a
colorful commemorative T-shirt that all participants wore on the
final day of the camp. The inaugural CampUs received an enthusiastic thumbs-up in feedback from parents and participants alike.
Supervisor of Elections Presents Award
Students from Bishop Kenny High School have won the Freedom Award in the private
school category of a voter registration competition sponsored by the Supervisor of Elections
Office. In a Facebook post, Elections Supervisor Jerry Holland shared, “Today, I had the honor
of presenting the 2013 Freedom Award to students and faculty of Bishop Kenny High School.
Bishop Kenny won the Overall Private School Award for registering 90 of their eligible students. Bishop Kenny High School has participated in the Countywide Voter Registration Drive
for the past 11 years; this is Bishop Kenny’s 2nd year winning the Freedom Award”
Social studies teacher Mr. Michael Broach reported that, “We ran our drive April 9
through 11 in all social studies classrooms. Teachers were asked to explain the process, how
political parties work, and the registration process.”
The drive was open to all students who were U.S. citizens and 16 years of age or older.
Even though voters must be 18 or older, the laws of Florida allow all 16 and 17 year olds to
pre-register so that they may vote starting on their 18th birthday.
Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland presented the
Freedom Award to Bishop Kenny High School, winners of the Overall Prep School Award in the annual voter registration competition. Mr. Holland presented the award to project sponsors Ms. Chris Ball
and Mr. Michael Broach.

81 Bishop Kenny Students Volunteer at DOSA CAMPS
This summer 81 volunteer students
from Bishop Kenny High School
provided one-on-one care to disabled
campers so that they could experience the joys of camp and, for
their caregivers, a week of respite. For many caregivers this will
likely be the only week of respite they will receive all year.
The only one of its kind in this area, Camp I Am Special offers
seven week-long, summertime, residential camps and at least one
weekend mini-camp during the year for children with physical,
emotional and developmental disabilities and disorders. Among
the campers are children with autism, epilepsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, all of which would prevent them from experiencing activities and social connections that most other children are
able to enjoy on a regular basis. The program offers life-enriching
experiences for approximately 34 campers per session.
Camp activities are modified to meet special needs in a safe,
secure environment, and provide 24-hour nursing assistance in
addition to one-on-one support. Activities range from swimming, horseback riding, hayrides, adaptive sports, fishing, waterslides, arts and crafts, carriage rides, and dances. This year’s camp
theme was a Western theme featuring cowboy hats, barbecues,
chair ‘square dancing’, marshmallow roasts, and more.
A very grateful Barbara Beechum, the mother of four children, three of whom are autistic, describes the program best
when she says, “Eleven years ago if you were to tell me that my
most profound child would be taken care of as well as I could take
care of him for a week, I’d say you were crazy. Not only was it
accomplished, but done with cheerfulness, affection, and respect
for my son. Who would guess that it was accomplished by
teenagers and young adults?”

Students and Faculty Attend Diocesan Eucharistic Congress
A Eucharistic Congress is a chance for Catholics to gather
together and rejoice in the real presence of the Lord in the Most
Holy Eucharist. Catholics from all walks of life, ethnicity, age, and
vocation gathered at the Prime Osborn Center on the weekend
of March 8-9 for an opportunity to deepen their understanding
of the Eucharist while, at the same time, enjoying fellowship.
Those in attendance had the opportunity to participate in
a diocesan-wide procession, attend Mass, participate in devotional ceremonies like Stations of the Cross, spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, go to individual Confession,
and listen to Catholic speakers such as: Archbishop Broglio, Matt
Maher, Ralph Martin, Randy Raus, Fr. Glenn Sudano, CFR, Mike
Buresh, and Fernando y Maria Gomez.
Representatives of the Bishop Kenny Community proudly carried a banner in
the procession designed by Ms. Kelly Long, Art Teacher and created by students
in her classes. (L-R) Nicholas Johnson, Andrew Evan Raesemann, Joshua M.
Trujillo, JohnLuke Vega, Cecilia Marie McMillan, Allesandra Di Mare, Madeleine
Lydia Monfort, Adrielle Tecson, Mrs. Lucy Chastain, Christopher Frondarino,
Mr. Bryan Haffey, Deacon Robert De Luca, and Mr. Jason Pascual.

NJROTC Cadets Receive Scholarships to Fly
Three Bishop Kenny NJROTC cadets received scholarships to attend the National Flight
Academy held at Naval Air Station Pensacola over the summer. The National Flight Academy
is poised to be the world's premiere educational experience where the excitement and
wonder of flight ignites a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in
students. The mission of the National Flight Academy is to inspire and educate future generations of leaders through positive exposure to Naval aviation. This is done by blending the
culture and excitement of aviation with 21st century technology and core competencies in
an exclusive, entertaining, and engaging immersive environment – all in an effort to provide
the best in the world learning adventure.
Cadets Jacob Pewitt ‘14, Matthew Jackson ‘14, and Kirstyn Higdon ‘14 had the honor
and privilege of attending the weeklong STEM program. Students spent their time aboard
the CVT-11 Ambition, learning how to fly the new X-12 Triads, how to guide the triads from
the Joint Operations Command (JOC), and plan out
missions in the Joint Intelligence Command (JIC).
They started by learning how to fly, and progressed
to the epitome of flying, which was a search and rescue mission for two collided vessels. Not only were
the days filled with exciting flying exercises, but they
also toured the Naval Aviation Museum, saw the
Blue Angels headquarters, visited the NAS Pensacola
Air Traffic Control tower and radar room, and learned
how to survive in the wild. Not only did they have a
wonderful time, but they also were able to make

Army Corps of Engineering Competition 2013
In celebration of Engineering Week, the Army Corps of Engineers held their annual
Engineering Competition in February. A total of 26 teams from high schools in Northeast
Florida participated in the competition that challenged students to design, build, and test
a bridge and a bunker made of pasta.
Bishop Kenny was well represented at the competition. The team of Camille Meschia
‘13, Alessandra DiMare ‘13, Ariel Navotas ‘13, Conner Noe ‘14, and Kevin Coyle ’13 took 2nd
place in “The Bunker Project”. The team of Peter House ‘13, Stephen Baltz ‘13, Zach McNulty
‘13, and Michael Barr ’13 took 1st place in the “Bridge Project” and “1st place overall”. Their
bridge could support a whopping 47 times its weight.
Army Corps engineers Matt Lesser and Tim Gysan attended the annual BK Awards
Ceremony presenting the travelling trophy to our school. BK has the distinction of having
won the trophy more times than any other school.

In the last issue of The Avenue we introduced The 1606 Project to our readers. To
recap, this is the brainchild of the Walsh
Foundation of Jacksonville, Florida. The project is designed to challenge students to
employ technology and social media to
write and produce short promotional
videos that tell their stories of Catholic education. Cash prizes made possible by the Foundation are the incentive for
students to participate in the project.
THE 1606
PROJECT
By definition, The 1606 Project is a juried competition of promotional
videos submitted by teacher-advised student teams. The videos should
encourage viewers to do one or more of the following:
• enroll their children in Catholic elementary and high schools
• work and volunteer in Catholic schools
• support financially the mission of Catholic schools
• spread knowledge of the tremendous successes of Catholic education
A panel of judges was assembled with each
judge being presented with a score sheet to
complete for each of the five finalist projects.
Videos were evaluated based on:
• Inspiration and Entertainment
• Production Quality
• Religious Content
• Marketing Value

Honor Societies Induction Program
The Carla Harris Performing Arts Center served as the location for this year’s Honor Societies Induction Ceremony held in
late February. The program, which was scheduled early in the
evening, made attendance for parents more convenient than
during the school day or on a weekend. Consolidating the
induction ceremonies of nine organizations also created one
easy-to-attend program especially for families of students being
inducted into the honor societies of multiple organizations.
In all, nearly 250 students attended the program where,
taking into account those students being inducted into multiple
honor societies, 271 new members were admitted to one or
more of the eight participating organizations. The Performing
Arts Center was full with an estimated 600-plus students and
parents in attendance. A brief reception, which also provided an
opportunity for families to take pictures, followed the program.
This special event was coordinated as a joint effort
between the Office of the Vice-Principal of Academics and
Student Services and the individual honor societies. “This is our
second year offering this consolidated program which not only
assists our moderators, but also eliminates the need for many
parents to schedule and coordinate individual honors induction
programs after school or in the evenings at what is always a very
busy time of the year,” added Vice-Principal Mary DeSalvo who
helped coordinate and develop the program. Organizations participating in the program included:
National Art Honor Society
The International Quill & Scroll Honor Society
International Thespian Society
Tri-M Music Honor Society
National Junior Classical League Latin Honor Society
Delta Epsilon Phi - National Honor Society for
High School Students of German

Bishop Kenny NJROTC Cadets Take
Top Honors at Sail Academy
S
ix cadets from the Bishop Kenny Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training
Corps (NJROTC) were chosen to attend the annual Area-12 NJROTC
Sailing Academy at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. Jacob Pewitt
‘14, Alec Sharpe ‘14, Danielle Zinner ‘15,
Mathew Bell ‘15, Caitlyn Lucey ‘16, and
Kirstyn Higdon ‘14 spent a week sailing
Flying Scots (6-7 person boats). Cadets
from all over Area-12 (Northeast Florida
and Georgia) came to this week-long
academy.
During the first couple of days
cadets learned the nomenclature of sailing vessels, how to steer a sailboat, the
points of sail, how to tie five basic knots, At the NJROTC Sail Academy, BK’s Caitlyn
and were required to pass a swim test. Lucey checks the lines on her Flying Scot.
The schedule for the rest of the days
included going to the marina in the morning and then in the afternoon learning
how to sail. In addition to sailing, the cadets were treated to other fun activities
including bowling, visiting the P-3 Orion hanger, and watching movies. Not only
was a lot learned during the week, but also a lot of new friends were made from
other high school NJROTC Units. In the words of participant Jacob Pewitt ‘14,
“Probably the most important lesson was to watch the boom and learn to duck
so you didn’t learn first-hand how it got the name BOOM (the last thing you hear
when it hits you in the head)!”
The top two distinguished cadets at Sail Academy came from Bishop Kenny;
Alec Sharpe ‘14 and Caitlyn Lucey ‘16 finished 1st and 2nd out of all cadets that
attended. Two other BK cadets finished as honor graduates – Jacob Pewitt ‘14 and
Kirstyn Higdon ‘14. All of the Bishop Kenny cadets had a wonderful experience
and would return if given the
opportunity.

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny football team had another successful season in 2012 by qualifying for the State playoffs for the
fourth year in a row and advancing to the State quarterfinals
in Class 5A. The Crusaders capped off a 7 and 3 regular season by winning their first two playoff games and advanced
deeper in the State playoffs than any Kenny football team in
the school’s history. The 2012 season was highlighted with
a first round playoff victory over #6 ranked Ponte Vedra and
a decisive victory in round 2 over Baker County, who had
beaten the Crusaders three weeks earlier. The run ended
with a home loss to eventual State Champion Tallahassee
Godby in front of a packed stadium of family, friends, and
alumni. The 2012 team says farewell to 20 outstanding seniors who have helped build Kenny football into one of the
top programs in the area. These seniors have amassed a 34
and 11 record over the past four seasons including two
District championships. The Crusaders are hoping to build
upon this success in 2013 and have a strong group of underclassmen that return in the fall.
The 2012 team had several individual players that
34
received recognition and awards. Senior wide receiver
Ahmad Fulwood was named to the U.S. Army All-American
Team, as well as being named All-State and All-First Coast,
respectively. Junior John Wolford earned 1st team honors
on both All-State and All-First Coast teams as a quarterback,
and was named Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year.
Senior Moronkie Tapper was named 2nd team All-State and
1st team All-First Coast at wide receiver. Senior Hunter
Parry was named 3rd team All-First Coast as a defensive
back, and senior Thomas Myslinski was named Honorable
Mention All-First Coast as a linebacker. All-District selections included Ahmad Fulwood, Moronkie Tapper, John
Wolford, and place kicker Robbie Blanchfield. Junior running back Cameron Singletary and sophomore outside
linebacker Charles Wade were also selected as Honorable
Mention All-District. Six members of the senior class have
also committed to play football at the collegiate level
including: Ahmad Fulwood (University of Florida), Thomas
Myslinski (Air Force), Eric Blackmon (University of South
Alabama), Moronkie Tapper (Kentucky State University),
Hunter Parry (LaGrange College), and Nick Johnson
(Heidelberg University).
The Bishop Kenny JV Football Team also completed a
successful season finishing with a record of 3 wins and 2
losses with one tie. The freshman football team went 0 and
5, but gained valuable experience with most players playing
tackle football for the first time. The Crusader program continues to have strong numbers with 118 boys participating
in 2012. The future of Kenny football looks bright with a
number of exciting underclassmen ready to excel in 2013.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2012 Bishop Kenny girls’cross country team continued to build
upon the tradition of excellence. This year’s squad boasted a mature
and seasoned squad that managed to post yet another top five finish at
the State meet.
Although the season didn’t officially get under way until August,
the girls started conditioning at the beginning of June, waking up early
to start their morning runs at 6:30, five days a week. The team returned
with over thirty girls to Brevard Distance Running Camp to run the
mountain trails surrounding Brevard, North Carolina. By the time of the
first meet they were more than ready to make their mark in every meet
they took part in.
The 2012 season witnessed an array of accomplishments. With nearly 100 runners on the roster at the end of the year, over 50 ran personal
bests in the 5K. We were fortunate to have 14 seniors, 12 of whom had
been with the team since their freshman year. 26 runners were awarded
varsity letters. 13 girls ran under 22:00 minutes for a 5k. Of those 13, 8 ran
under 21:00 minutes and, of those 8, 3 ran under 20 minutes.
The efforts of the JV and varsity squads were met with great success. The junior varsity team regularly found themselves with a first
place finish under the direction of seniors Haley Wathen, Mackenzie
Spies, and Ariel Navotas, boosted by the support of sophomores Marie
Fazio and Raegan Gruber. Freshman Kilty Barker was also eager to start
contributing from the start of her career. The varsity team was also
stocked with a new batch of young runners with freshman Annie
Kaczorowski leading the charge. The team finished fourth at the 2A
State meet behind senior Mary Kate Thyfault who finished 10th overall
in the state and junior Macey Kaczorowski - both of whom moved up
the record board of the fastest 5K runners in Bishop Kenny history.
Juniors Bridget Reid, Annie Kennedy, Haley O’Neill, Danielle Hartless, and
senior Isabella Campos rounded out the varsity runners on the State
team. Other outstanding varsity performances were put forth by seniors
Karli Himmelreich, Cecilia McMillan, and Courtney Widman. The 2012
squad demonstrated the ever-present commitment to excellence that
has always been characteristic of Bishop Kenny runners.

22 aces, 152 service points and 190 digs. Senior Abby Boll received the
Crusader Award and Third Team All-City recognition. Abby led the team
defensively with 398 digs, 493 receptions, along with 22 aces, 169 service points, and 48 assists. Senior Darby Clower finished the season with
185 digs, 25 aces and 172 service points, and senior Morgan Widell finished with 154 kills and 60 blocks. Other key contributors were sophomores, Denvyr Tyler-Palmer and Nadine Williams. Denvyr led the team
offensively with 290 kills, contributed 39 aces, 171 service points, 40
blocks and 244 digs. Denvyr also received Second Team All-City recognition and the Most Improved Player Award. Nadine Williams received
All-City Honorable Mention and led the team in aces with 43, accumulated 155 service points, 199 kills, 33 blocks and 232 digs.
Additionally, we are very proud to announce that Abby Boll will be
continuing her volleyball career at Stetson University. The volleyball
team would like to thank the Bishop Kenny Administrators and Staff for
their help and support, along with the Booster Club and JOI for making
this year a success. We would also like to thank the parents for their support and dedication and all the fans, sponsors, and Bishop Kenny

Coach’s Comments:
What a great year for boys’ golf at Bishop Kenny! We had a consistent year with excellent play from the entire 11-man team. Captains
Chris Lynch and Spencer Turner provided outstanding leadership to the
team that finished 2nd in the District Tournament. Excellent efforts from
our seniors Chris Lynch and Tyler Chaney, juniors led by the team low
scoring leader Davis Roche and Spencer Turner, and consistent help
from sophomores Trey Lynch and Andrew Tucker. Colin Duffy was the
1st alternate for the team at the district and regional tournaments. The
year ended at regionals with Davis Roche qualifying as an alternate for
the state tournament.
Special thanks and congratulations go to all the seniors on the
team this year: Tyler Chaney, Colin Duffy, and Chris Lynch. We wish them
all the success they deserve in golf and their other future endeavors.
In congratulating past performances, we look to the bright future
of the golf team at Bishop Kenny. Eight of the 11 players on the team
will be returning, including three of the postseason starters. We know
with the improvements by first-year players Taylor Graham, Kory Molter,
and Andrew Ryan, the Kenny golf team will be able to improve on the
last season and for many years to come.

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny girls’golf team was able to advance to the Florida
High School Athletic Association Regional Tournament for the fourth season in a row. The team played an incredibly difficult schedule this past
season in an effort to size up the competition and compare how other
teams played the game. This inevitably helped prepare the girls for the
post-season tournaments.
Over the course of the regular season, the team achieved a fifteenstroke drop from their first match to their final match. An incredible
improvement was finishing in 2nd place at the District golf tournament.
The girls’ team finished in 3rd place the last three consecutive years.
Senior captains, Laurel Hoffert and Ashlyn Nassar, played some of
their best golf at the District and Regional golf tournaments. They proved
to be true leaders and captains by encouraging and motivating their
underclassmen teammates throughout the regular and post seasons.
The top five scorers for the girls’ team this year were senior Laurel
Hoffert (58.3 strokes per match), senior Ashlyn Nassar (58.5 strokes per
match), junior Vanessa Navarro (59.8 strokes per match), sophomore Julie
Goodwin (63 strokes per match), and sophomore Kelly Wolfe (63.2
strokes per match).
The girls who will be returning for the 2013-2014 season are capable of making a run at a fifth consecutive advancement to the regional
tournament. The coaching staff will be looking for rising senior Vanessa
Navarro to continue the leadership of previous captains. The other
underclassmen will be expected to continue to foster a positive team
spirit and have continued score improvement.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2012-13 Crusaders definitely had a season to remember.
Motivated by the memory of tough playoff losses from the previous season, they set out to make history. A successful regular season was highlighted by victories over strong Ed White and Tampa Catholic teams, as
well as an exciting last second victory over Bolles. Entering the playoffs,
the Crusaders were 19-6, with a perfect 4-0 record in District 3-5A and a
#1 seed for the tournament. Hosting the tournament proved beneficial
as the team held off Terry Parker and Baker County en route to winning
the District Championship. Strong defensive team efforts carried the
team further in Regional victories over Ponte Vedra and Nease. The
Regional Final was played before a packed gym of excited students, parents, and alum who celebrated and stormed the court as the Crusaders
defeated a very tough Tallahassee Rickards team, 57-41. The victory propelled the team to its first berth in the Final Four since 1979.
Over 500 fans, including eight busloads of students, traveled to the
Lakeland Center to support the team in their bid to upset a powerful
top-ranked Tampa Jesuit squad. The team battled throughout the
game, closing a 15 point margin to two points in the final two minutes
before falling 46-41 in Jesuit’s closest win of the season. Overall, the
Crusaders provided memories for the Bishop Kenny community that will
last for many years to come. Our players also had a very successful year
off the court as well, being recognized by the FHSAA for the 3rd consecutive season as an Academic Team Champion in boys’ basketball for
having an average GPA of over 3.0.
The 2012-13 Crusaders were led by Brennan Sullivan, Brian Dawkins,
Blake Harris, Korey McDougald, Christian Carlyle, Anthony Bajalia, and
Shaggy Allmond. The strong supporting cast included Adam Garcia,
Keeshaun King, Chase Driscoll, Alex Nutter, Keenan Maher, Collin Morrill,
and Justin Goldfeder. Manager John Lennon provided great support for
the team all season long as well. Our senior class leaves a legacy of hard
work and determination, and we know they will continue to do great
things in their future endeavors. Our underclassmen gained valuable
experience all year and will look to continue our strong tradition of playing hard, playing smart, and playing together.

The 2012-2013 varsity girls’ basketball team finished
the season strong with an overall record of 18-9. The girls
started off the season with their first win of the year over
First Coast High School. From that point, they went on to

the ladies won the Clay High School Christmas Tournament
defeating Fletcher, Keystone, and Clay High Schools. To
continue on the winning streak, the girls defeated crosstown rival Bolles at home for their first victory of the New
Year. On senior night, the girls battled back and forth with
Paxon to finish as the District Runner-up. The season came
to an end with a tough loss against Nease High School in
the first round of the Regional tournament. The Crusaders
were led by senior captains Katie Blaquiere, Isabella
Campos, Emily Coppedge, and Lindsay Self. The roster also
included juniors Olivia Coker, Hope Harrison, Brooke
Gunlock, and Annie Self, sophomores Emily Myslinski and
Alexis Nunez, and freshman Maria Parker. Each player made
great contributions to make this season a success. The

Coach’s Comments:
The 2012-2013 season was one of high expectations for the BK boys’ soccer program. After a summer
that saw the program conduct its first soccer camp in
several years, a large group of potential young players,
along with a strong nucleus of returning veterans raised
the excitement level for everyone. The schedule for the
season had been developed to test both the JV and
Varsity against the strongest group of competitors we
had faced under the current coaching staff. The varsity
was led by returning players Riley Perrin, Andrew Kurtz,
Chris Azar, CJ Thomson, and sophomore Elliott Langlois.
Newcomers to the varsity – John Boynton, Sam
Jaramillo, Johnny Azar, and Andrew Tucker – would also
feature in the mix. The season opened with the annual
pre-season tournament at Patton Park, where the varsity
picked up a win and a loss. From there it was a tough
road test against Gainesville Buchholz, in which BK came
out on the losing end of a 9-1 loss - the single worst loss
for the Crusaders in the last five years. The team would
go on to lose four of the next five, while suffering significant injuries to key players. The injury bug would continue to be an issue throughout the entire season, hampering our ability to field our strongest line up.
The second part of the season saw us come out of
the gates running, as the team came together and
pulled off a stunning road win against eventual State
champion Bolles. This victory boosted the confidence of
the entire program and we ended the season on a high
note, finishing second in the District. The District
Tournament saw us open with a victory over Paxon.
Wolfson was the opponent in the semi-finals and, after
the match ended 2-2 in overtime, it came down to
penalty kicks. The team showed a great deal of character in a shootout and was able to win on the final attempt. In the District final, we
played well but would go down at the hands of Stanton.
Our Regional match-up pitted us against the Sharks from Ponte
Vedra. Playing PV is always a tough contest; however, playing at their
home field is even tougher. They jumped out to an early lead. BK
fought back and gained much of the possession for the entire game
and played what was one of our best games of the season. However,
in the end we were not able to notch the score and Ponte Vedra
would go on to win the match 1-0. Ponte Vedra would eventually go
on to capture the State Championship in their class. A tough way to
lose a match, especially for our seniors. Riley Perrin would be selected 3rd team All-First Coast and Michael Sweda would receive
Honorable Mention honors. Andrew Kurtz and Michael Sweda
would represent BK in the North Florida Senior All-Star Game.
Additionally, Riley Perrin and Chris Azar would sign letters of intent
with Jacksonville University.
Though it ended unexpectedly, it was a season of adversity that
tested players and staff alike. Our program will grow from this season as we prepare for 2013-2014

Coach’s Comments:
As I think back about this past season, what comes to mind right
away is how much we grew as a team. As a coaching staff, we knew
coming in that we had a big senior class to replace, losing seven starters.
We knew we were going to be young with only five seniors this year –
several of whom weren’t on the team the year before. We also knew that
if they could come together, we had a lot of potential.
Over the course of the season, as the girls came together, they
became something very special to watch. I know how disappointed they
were after losing the District finals, but I also know how far they came to
get there. One moment that sticks out for me occurred early on when we
were still struggling. I remember one of the girls saying that, although we
weren’t winning, this was the most fun she’d ever had on a team. I think,
overall, that points to one of the lasting memories I’ll have about this team
- how enjoyable it was to be around this group of young women.
As I think back to this past season and start thinking about the next, I
know the girls coming back have seen what it takes to be successful. They’ve
seen that when we work together, we can achieve greatness. I know we will
find a lot of success because of the struggles we overcame this season.
As to the senior ladies, I know that they will achieve great things in
the next few years. Whether it is Ariel’s smile, Kiley’s fiery competitiveness, Jess’s compassion, Mary’s kindness, or Kathryn’s passion, these five
young women are bound for amazing things. I am sad to see them go,
but look forward to hearing about what they will do in the years to come.
In the end, I know all these ladies on the girls’ soccer team have a
bright future ahead of them. Luckily for us coaches, many of them still
have some time with us. The lessons learned this season will serve us
well as we prepare for next season. We have a great group coming back
next season, and with the lessons learned this year, I know we can
achieve many of the goals we have every year as a team.

Coach’s Comments:
In September, members of the 2012-2013 Bishop
Kenny wrestling team started training in the weight room
for the upcoming season. These young men worked hard
together and a special bond was formed amongst them.
They realized with only four seniors on the varsity squad
that everyone had to help each other to achieve their goals.
After practices the more experienced wrestlers would stay
and help the younger ones learn new technique. This selfless behavior was a great example of what these student
athletes learn in receiving a Catholic education. Their hard
work paid off with a second place trophy in the District
tournament. Bishop Kenny had seven wrestlers in the finals
of Districts and eleven advanced on to the Regional tournament. The team placed 7th out of 36 teams at Regionals,
and one wrestler, Nick Toney, advanced to the State tournament. There were four underclassmen that were one match
away from qualifying for the State tournament. This fact,
plus the generous gift of a new wrestling mat from the
Booster Club, makes the future of BK wrestling bright!
The underclassmen will miss the senior leadership of
captain Landon Toney, the inspiration of Scott Hogshead,
the 100% practice effort of Jay Hoffiani, and the competitive
attitude of Raymond Barakat. We, as a team, wish all of the
seniors good luck and success in the future.

The Bishop Kenny Crusader baseball team completed
their 2013 season with an overall record of 23-5. Three of
this year’s highlights included putting together a thirteengame winning streak, winning the local Baker Sports
Invitational, and winning the District Championship – their
13th out of the last fourteen years.
Individually, this year’s Crusaders were led offensively by
seniors Philip Hart (.409 BA, 4 HR and 29 RBI), Jon Sherman
(.409 BA, 3 3B and 21 RBI), and K.K. Daniel (.386 BA, 3 HR, and
32 RBI). Additional support came from newcomer, sophomore Dalton Board. Statistically, on the mound the team’s
pitching corps was one of the strongest in the city. The workhorse of the staff was Cameron Paley (7-3 with a 1.39 ERA).
Strong performances were also turned in by Troy Hollinger (61 and 0.39 ERA) and Kyle Kadlub (8-1 and 1.82 ERA).
This year’s team was comprised of 11 seniors. Over
their four years in the program, this group was part of four
District championships and winning a total of eighty-four
games. During the year, the team achieved a top 5 State
ranking and, in one publication, a top 50 National ranking.
A special thanks goes out to this group of seniors and to

The Bishop Kenny’s boys’ tennis team had an outstanding season
posting a 10-4 record during season play. As District runners-up we went
on to Regionals where we lost to a tough Ponte Vedra team in first round
play. The Bishop Kenny’s boys’ team’s top 5 positions were manned by
senior, Chuck Haddad at Court 1; junior, Jack Amthor at Court 2; sophomore, Egan Sanchez at Court 3; sophomore, Adrian Navotas at Court 4;
and junior Michael Dobinski at Court 5. The team played hard-fought
matches showing a lot of determination to get the win. Will Thompson
as a freshman played in several matches earning Ws in all of them. The
remaining team members, always on the ready, were Alejandro
Hernandez, Fred Ghannam, Dylan Alson, and seniors Cody Salsburg, Jack
Lennon, and Andrew Raesemann. We wish our four graduating seniors
good luck as all will be attending college. Thank you for your contribution in establishing Bishop Kenny as a team to beat.
The girls’ tennis team this year finished with a 7-7 record. Starting
the season Court 1 player, senior, Ariel Navotas was side-lined with ankle
injuries so all our girls stepped it up a notch with junior, Katie Reid taking
on Court 1; senior, Katie Prattos on Court 2; senior, Amanda Bateh on
Court 3; senior, Frances Pardillo on Court 4; and junior, Liz Norton on
Court 5. The remaining team members ready to step in when needed
included Gaby Haddad, Caroline Nimnicht, Julie Moore, and seniors
Mackenzie Spies and Mary Schmitt. This year’s girls’team is graduating six
seniors, five of whom have played all four years. We wish them the best
with their college careers; they will be missed. As with the boys’ team the
girls have become a team to beat in the District.
A worthy note: Both boys’ and girls’ teams were recognized by the FHSAA

and boys’ team. The girls qualified one individual, sophomore Emily
Myslinski, to the State Meet in the 100m High Hurdles, the 300m Hurdles,
and the Triple Jump. Emily had a busy day, but succeeded in placing 6th
in the Triple Jump, 7th in the 100m High Hurdles, and 11th in the 300m
Hurdles. The girls also qualified a 4x800 meter relay team comprised of
juniors Bridget Reid and Macey Kaczorowski, and seniors Lydia Ware and
Mary Kate Thyfault. The girls ran a season best of 9:47 to claim 7th place
in the Class 2A State Championship. Additionally, Emily Myslinski set
school records in the girls’ Triple Jump, Long Jump, and 300m Hurdles
with personal bests of 36’ 11”, 17’ 1.25”, and 45.02 seconds, respectively.
The boys’ 4x800-meter relay team, led off by senior Zach Perry and
joined by senior Chris Norton, and juniors Erik Sampayo and David
Yarborough, also qualified for the Class 2A State Championship meet. The
boys tied their season best performance of 8:08 at the State
Championship placing 4th overall. Soon after, sophomore David Bell
earned All-State honors in the Pole Vault, placing 3rd with a height of 13’
6”. During the evening’s final races, Zach Perry and David Yarborough both
qualified as individuals in the 1600-meter run, and David ran 4:20 to dramatically win a State Championship with a strong finishing kick, holding
off second place by 0.27 seconds. Shortly after, Trey Johnson, son of the
shot put school record holder Earl Johnson Jr. ‘83, ran a record-breaking
performance in the 300m Hurdles to place 6th with a time of 39.61 seconds. David Yarborough ended the exciting State Championship meet for
the Crusaders by running a hard-fought and exhausting race in the 3200meter run and placing fourth overall. The boys’ team recorded their best
team finish at the Class 2A State Championship meet in recent history,
earning 4th place with a total of 29 points. Additionally, Cody Rose, who
qualified for the State Championship meet in the Long Jump, set a new
school record in that event by jumping 22’ 4.25” and the Shuttle Hurdle
Relay team made up of seniors Joseph Bateh and Mark Wnuk, and freshmen Jeremy Clermont and Bobby Guild, set a new school record in the
event by running 1:12.75 at the Wolfpack Classic.

The 2013 softball team capped off a great year by posting a winning season record of 17-11, finishing as 5A District runner-up and making it to the Regional Quarterfinals. Our schedule was one of the toughest in our area. Although we came up short on our team goals of winning Districts, we still had a great year and played at a very high level.
We will miss our six seniors as they move on to college. We are excited
for next season as we will have many talented young players on the field
with varsity level playing experience. We have big goals and expectations for the next couple of years with the success we had from varsity’s
four freshmen players this season.
As a program we are also looking forward to the talent coming up
the pipeline with the success of the junior varsity team who finished the
season with a winning record of 15-7. We look forward to 2014 with
high expectations.
The softball team would like to thank Bishop Kenny for their help
and support, along with the Booster Club and JOI for making this year a
success. We would also like to thank all of the parents, fans, sponsors,
and Bishop Kenny Community for helping us with an opportunity to

Boys’ Basketball Goes
to Final Four
he 2012-13 boys’ basketball season will be one we all
remember for a long time to come. Our run through
the playoffs to our first Final Four berth in 34 years was
a special experience for our players and coaching staff. The
support and excitement we felt from our administration,
faculty, students, alumni, and entire school community
was incredible. To see eight busloads of students and fans
entering the Lakeland Center to cheer for our State
Semifinal game was humbling, as well as knowing the rest
of the student body was gathered in the cafeteria watching and rooting us on. Our team had an inspired performance against eventual state champion Tampa Jesuit, and
they made our school very proud. We appreciate the support of the Crusader Nation and were honored to represent
the Bishop Kenny
community.

FHSAA Year End
Wrap-Up
T
he Florida High School Athletic
Association (FHSAA) announced
the results of the annual Floyd E.
Lay Sunshine Cup All Sports Award competition in June. Each year points are
awarded to schools based on their finish
in FHSAA State Series Competition
throughout the school year. The Bishop
Kenny Crusader athletic program ended
the 2012-2013 season in 4th place out of
a total of 86 schools in statewide Class 5A
competition.
Last year 819 Bishop Kenny studentathletes participated on one or more athletic teams. That translates to more than
67% of the student population participating on one or more of our athletic
teams. During the 2012-13 school year,
fifteen Bishop Kenny sports teams were
recognized by the FHSAA for their academic achievements.

Donna Deegan Presents
Danny Brown High School Challenge Cup
The Danny Brown High School Challenge Cup has been returned
to Bishop Kenny for the second time in three years. The traveling cup
was presented to the team of Michael Barr ‘13, Isabella Campos ‘13,
Chris Norton ‘13, Bridget Reid ’14, and Ben Wright ‘13
by Bishop Kenny graduate Donna Deegan ‘79
founder of the Donna Foundation. The presentation
was made at the annual Underclassmen Awards
Breakfast in May. The Danny Brown Cup is awarded
annually to the fastest high school relay team to
enter the race.
In Donna’s words,“To his friends, Danny Brown (BK Class of ’68) was
a much-loved and respected teacher and track coach at both Bishop
Kenny and John J. Snyder High Schools in Jacksonville, Florida. He
made character the cornerstone of all he did on and off the track. He
loved each of the kids he coached like they were his own. He brought
out the best in everyone he touched. The National Marathon to Finish
Breast Cancer is honored to name our High School Challenge in honor
of Danny Brown.”

ALUMNI & REUNIONS
BK Hosts Book Signing for Alumnus
Jose Ramirez, BK Class of 1963, came to the U.S. in 1961 just a few months before
the Bay of Pigs invasion as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Volunteers from Catholic
Relief Services assisted Jose, bringing him to Jacksonville and placing him in residence at Camp St. John and in school at Bishop Kenny. Fifty years later, Jose has written a book entitled Defining Moments: A Cuban Exile’s Story about Discovery and the
Search for a Better Future. In the book Jose reflects on the time he spent living at
Camp St. John, the six years spent waiting to reunite with his parents and, after a thirty-three year absence, he shares memories of several return visits to Cuba taken
between 1994 and 2013.

Classmates Joe Foy ’63 and Bernadette Picras ’63, as well as Joe’s wife
Colleen Lanahan Foy ‘65, helped arrange a book signing for Jose in early
August in the Media Center. Approximately 30 people were in attendance,
including several of Jose’s classmates. In addition to an opportunity to purchase a copy of the book signed by the author, Jose made a very interesting
presentation complete with maps, personal stories and insights, as well as a
display of memorabilia brought with him from Cuba. Defining Moments is

Approximately 30 people attended a book signing event in the Bishop

David Livaudais Scholarship Established
David E. Livaudais,
a proud member of the Bishop
Kenny Class of 1959, passed away
nearly one year ago, October 12,
2012. Since then, through the
shared memories of friends and
family, we have learned so much
about David and why an anonymously funded memorial scholarship at Bishop Kenny seems a most
appropriate tribute to his memory.
Chris, David’s wife of 48 years said,
“Knowing that through the generosity of another, someone would have
the same opportunity he did to
receive a solid Catholic education
and enjoy the lifelong friendships
that four years at Bishop Kenny provides truly honors David in such an
appropriate way.”
David attended Immaculate
Conception elementary school and
then moved on to Bishop Kenny for
high school. According to Chris
Livaudais, “As far as he knew his
Catholic education was the much
appreciated gift of unknown generous parishioners. David and his siblings even had meal tickets; they
never had to pay for their lunches.
This had such an impact on him; he
always felt the need to give back.”
Upon graduating high school,
he began his career in Jacksonville
where he met and married Christine
Alise Simpson. They were married
for 48 years and had two daughters,
Julie and Dana. Dana’s thoughts
about her father reveal that his spiritual life shaped the kind of man he
was, “Dad really lived the Gospel; he
spent a lot of time in prayer. He
found the secret to peace – trusting
God in every situation and practicing gratitude. His faith was the foundation of his life.”
something he believed in because
the money goes directly to help provide tuition assistance to families in
need, just like his had been. He started giving as far back as 1989, the first
year of the appeal and contributed
each year thereafter. Now his memory will go on at his beloved Bishop
Kenny, each year, through one lucky
recipient of the scholarship established in his name. David’s daughter
Julie adds, “Bishop Kenny changed
the trajectory of my Dad’s life. He
would be thrilled to know that others could have the same opportunity through this generous scholarship.” The annually renewable 4-year
scholarship covers the full cost of
tuition, fees, and even includes an
iPad! We thank the generous donors
who have made this scholarship
possible.

It is for these reasons that the scholarship has been set

According to the criteria governing the scholarship, candidates must write a brief paragraph describing how they are coping with or have overcome a lifechallenging adversity and include themes including:
• Living with a positive attitude

Hailing from Ponte Vedra, Florida and Austin,Texas,
Bishop Kenny graduates Casey Martin ’70 and
Elizabeth Frye ’87 joined 29 other intrepid explorers
on a quest to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
It’s a small world – Elizabeth Frye
’87 and Casey Martin ’70 met
while climbing Africa’s Mt.
Kilimanjaro this past summer.
The six-day trek along the Marangu route is the
most popular one with tourists, but this trip isn’t for
the weekend warrior or the faint of heart. Climbers
must hike 44 miles round trip and climb to an elevation of over 19,000 feet! Assisted by an African crew
(Wild Frontiers) of exceptional guides and porters,
Casey and Beth endured five days of uphill hiking in
various environments, hut-style camping, and temperatures ranging from below zero to 80 degrees
Fahrenheit.
On June 7, the explorers awoke and began the climb to the summit a little before
midnight. After close to seven hours of hiking, the groups reached Gilmans’ Point
around sunrise. Soon afterward, those who were in good shape began the walk
around the crater to the summit at Uhuru. After brief celebrations and pictures at the
summit, the groups began the descent to lower elevations. Casey and Beth were
among the 16 from their group that were able to make the entire journey to the summit! The final day was spent retracing the path back to the park entrance.
This trip was truly the adventure of a lifetime. We left Tanzania with a feeling of
accomplishment, exquisite memories, and new friendships. And one of those new
friendships...Well, you never know where you might have the pleasure to meet another Bishop Kenny graduate...even on another continent!

Alumni Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship
The annual Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented to Miss
Lana Farhat as part of the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the
King School in June. Mrs. Elizabeth McGovern, one of Julie’s teachers at
Christ the King, made the presentation to Lana who is now a freshman
at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship which was established in memory of
Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of
the BK class of 1988, is awarded annually to a deserving member of the
graduating class from Christ the King. The student is awarded a onetime $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS.
Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. They
had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate, who is now a senior at
Florida State University, and a son Ronnie who is a junior at BK. Julie
passed away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition.
Julie’s parents, Joe and Donna Joseph, and husband, Ronnie
Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory in
a way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve
their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining

Class of 1963
50 YEARS
The Class of ‘63 gathered at the Quality Suites
in Jacksonville Beach in
early May to celebrate the
50th anniversary of their
graduation. Friday night
was spent catching up
with classmates and
spouses and sharing stories of our years at BK.
Saturday morning the
class took a tour of the campus. For many it was their first time
back on campus in 50 years. Everyone was amazed at the growth
and beauty of the campus. Saturday afternoon the class was honored to have Mass celebrated by Monsignor Mortimer Danaher
where candles were lit in memory of our deceased classmates.
Saturday night everyone enjoyed Bono’s Barbeque and danced
the night away. The highlight of the Saturday night festivities was
Bishop Kenny Class of 1963
a heartfelt thank you to the class from Jose Ramirez who came to
Bishop Kenny as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Jose expressed his
gratitude to everyone for making him feel so welcome and showing him the ropes at BK.
While the weather did not cooperate, everyone managed to
have a great weekend. We all look forward to getting together in
two years to celebrate our 70th birthdays.

It began with a meet-and-greet at

Saturday at Bishop Kenny where we toured the campus and
were amazed at the many changes that have taken place
since our day. Father John Gillespie met with us and we
attended Mass. Our evening event was at the Marriott
Southpoint where we all enjoyed drinks, food, and a lively
band. What a blast! We hugged, danced, and chatted
through the night. We had a great turnout. The event ended
at Harry Bowen’s home for a delicious BBQ. We look forward
to once again gathering at our next reunion.

“
“Going to a reunion can be a nerve-wracking
event. You don't know who you'll see, what
you'll talk about, or how long you'll stay.
Stepping into my 35th BK reunion certainly
was an exciting time for me. Upon entering
Mussallem Galleries, I was immediately
swept away. The beauty of the place, along
with seeing all my friends again, put me at
ease. What can I say... good food, good
music, and a generous host all made for a
reunion I won't soon forget. It's a beautiful
thing.” ~ Carmela Alesi Hall
“Arnika and I had a great time at the reunion.
We are grateful to James for hosting us
(clearly I am not working hard enough!). It
was wonderful to hear and share the many
accomplishments of our class. We are looking forward to the next gathering.”
~ Stephen Dawkins
“A magnificent event, to say the least! The
best reunion by far!! A special thanks to the
Reunion Committee for their hard work. You
ladies are the best!! And a mega thanks to
our most generous host, James Mussallem,
who remains a true class act after all these
years!!” ~ Janie Mead Knudsen
“Without a doubt it was a magical evening
thanks to our Master Magician James
Mussallem, his family and staff. How appropriate for our 35th reunion to be entertained
in a mythically antique setting. When you
walked through the doors, it was almost like
the mystery begins... and so it did. Surely a
lot of us were guessing who was whom, but
why does it seem that Eva never changes or
gets older? That might be mystery number
one. For those of us that attended, there
must have been stardust in my eyes because
everyone looked great…. the music was
incredible and the food was absolutely
astounding. Eva, Karen, and Pixie - on behalf
of the Class of 1978, thank you; the committee, for all that you did to make sure that we
had a reunion to remember. It was great
seeing all of you.” ~ Dawn Delgado-Knight
“It was so great to see everyone and have
such a great turn out! Amazing that after 35
years we still seemed so close! Great time!” ~
Denise Bush Richardson
“… to say that the evening was "magical"
would be a great understatement. One of
the most generous and kind classmates,
James Mussallem, provided a heavenly setting in his family's Gallery – a magnificent
array of wonderful food and desserts, as well
as music snappy enough to dance throughout the night (and believe me, WE DANCED
with joy!). The Class of 1978 came together
to share stories of our triumphs, our children,
and some grandchildren as well! It was as if
very little time had passed. Everyone looked
fabulous! Hugs and kisses were plentiful,
and the sheer joy of seeing each other was
apparent on every face…the night so fantastic.” ~ Judy Smith Harper
“…so much fun. I enjoyed reminiscing with
everyone about high school days, like our
senior trip to Washington D.C. Some of us
even knew each other before high school
going back to the Catholic grade schools we
attended together… I want to thank the
committee… James Mussallem and his wife,
Kristi….The venue was so beautiful. I look
forward to the next reunion.”

A good time was had by all! The Saturday night dinner marking the 1983 class reunion was held at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Jacksonville.
The BKHS Class of 1983 celebrated their
30th year class reunion late in June.
Headquarters for the festivities was the
30 YEARS
riverfront Wyndham Hotel in downtown
Jacksonville. The reunion was hosted by Joan (Tubel) Stephens, Pat
(Ostertag) Phillips, and Diane Vickers.
The weekend kicked-off with a cocktail reception featuring live
music Friday night at the Topsider Deck at the hotel. On Saturday classmates gathered for a tour of the Bishop Kenny campus followed by our
valedictorian Fr. Tim Cusick celebrating Mass at the Bishop Kenny
Chapel. On Saturday night everyone enjoyed a formal dinner. In addition to a lovely meal, the crowd watched a slide show from our senior
breakfast, and listened to a speech from a classmate who has successfully fought against cancer. On a lighter note a class ring was returned
to its rightful owner; it had been lost at Atlantic Beach 30 years ago! An
80s DJ provided great music and most of the people in attendance
couldn’t help but get on the dance floor – both Friday and Saturday

Everyone is still talking

planning all types of informal gatherings in the years to come. Stay
tuned and stay in touch for events to come.
Class of 2003
The Bishop Kenny Class of 2003
gathered at the Hyatt Riverfront
in downtown Jacksonville on
Saturday, May 18th to celebrate their 10th reunion. It was a
small group of classmates, friends, and spouses. The banquet dinner began in the early evening with drinks, music,
and socializing outside on the patio with a beautiful view of
Jacksonville. This was especially nice for those who flew in
from their homes in other cities and do not get to see our beautiful skyline
very frequently!
Everyone enjoyed a delicious three-course sit-down dinner, and
took full advantage of the chance to take lots of group photos before the
dancing and socializing took over and brought us to the eleven o’clock hour
and the end of the evening.
Some class members have since created a private group page on
Facebook especially for our class to stay in closer contact with each other and
to try and hold another reunion even sooner than in another 10 years! A great
time was had by all, and we hope those who could not make it this time can
certainly make it to our next class reunion. We can't wait to do it again!

Need Passes to BK Sporting Events?
If an All-Sports Pass for admission to all regular season sporting events at BK
sounds like a good idea, then the BK Boosters has an unbeatable offer for you. A BK
Boosters membership brings with it an opportunity for you to buy passes for you
and your family to gain admission to all regular season home sporting events for the
entire 2013-14 school year. A BK Boosters pass offers significant savings to families
that intend to come to support the BK Crusaders throughout the school year.
If you’re a BK parent, simply fill out the BK Boosters order form that was mailed
to you in early August and return it along with a check for the appropriate fees to
BKHS. Your passes will be mailed to you as soon as we receive your order form.
Not a BK parent or simply can’t find your order form? Visit our website
www.bishopkenny.org to fill out and submit your registration online and you can
even pay for it using our PayPal link. Just point and click and your BK Boosters
passes will be in the mail on their way to you. Go Crusaders!
BK Boosters Membership Chair Julio Romero and Miss BK
Kayla Schilling ‘14 got up bright and early on the first day
of school to greet freshman parents at the Meet & Greet
and encourage membership in the BK Boosters.
