Preparing for the Test
What is the SSAT?
Test Day Checklist
The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) consists of two parts:
a brief essay, and a multiple-choice aptitude test which measures your
ability to solve mathematics problems, to use language, and to comprehend what you read.
The test is administered on two levels:
• Lower (for students currently in grades 5-7)
• Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)
Many editions of the test exist to ensure that no student takes the
same SSAT twice. All tests are printed in English.
The test is timed and divided into five sections. You will be given 25
minutes for the writing sample, 30 minutes each for the verbal and two
quantitative sections, and 40 minutes for the reading section.
•
•
Writing Sample
Includes one topic statement which you will be asked to support or
argue, using specific examples from personal experience, current
events, history or literature. The writing sample is not scored by
SSAT and is not included with the score report sent to families.
Quantitative (Math)
Consists of two sections of 25 questions each. You will be required
to do math computation similar to what you do in school or what is
useful in everyday life.
•
Verbal
Consists of 30 synonym and 30 analogy questions.
•
Reading Comprehension
Includes 40 questions based on about 7 reading passages. These
questions measure your ability to read and comprehend what you
read.
✔
Don’t forget:
• Your SSAT Admission Ticket
• Sharpened #2 pencils
• A good eraser
✔
Listen carefully to the instructions read by the test
supervisor and follow directions in the test book.
✔
Remember to mark your current grade level, not
the grade you will enter next year, on your answer
sheet.
✔
No books, papers, calculators, beepers, phones,
or alarm watches are permitted in the test room.
No visitors are allowed in the test room.
✔
All test materials will be collected at the end of
the test and may not be taken from the room. The
SSAT is not a disclosed test.
✔
✔
Testing normally begins at 9:00 am.
Check your admission ticket for exact time.
Plan to arrive at the test by 8:15 to ensure proper checkin, especially if you are a standby tester.
Test dismissal is normally between
12 noon and 12:30 pm.
Be sure someone can meet you at that time, as test
supervisors are not responsible for remaining at the
center after the test ends. At large centers, testing may
start later than 9 a.m. and dismissal may be delayed.

Myth:
Extra testing time will improve a student’s performance on
the SSAT.
Fact:
The standard testing time has been extended to ensure that all
students have enough time to complete the SSAT.
In 2004, the total testing time for the SSAT was increased by 30 minutes to assure that all students finish the test within the time allotted
and thereby eliminate speededness as a component of the SSAT.
Should You Guess?
All questions on the SSAT are equal in value, and scores are based on
the number of questions you answer correctly minus one-quarter point
for each question you answer incorrectly. You may only give one response to each question. Although no points are awarded or deducted
for questions left unanswered, you will be penalized for questions
answered incorrectly or with more than one response.
While educated guessing is encouraged, random guessing is discouraged. If you know enough about a question to eliminate two or more
answer choices as incorrect, you might try to answer it; the more
choices you can eliminate, the better your chances are for answering correctly. However, if you know nothing about a question, leave it
blank and move on to others. It is unlikely that random guessing will
improve your score significantly, and it may actually lower your score.
Remember, though, the more questions you answer, the higher your
potential score.
Sample Test Questions
The SSAT consists of two parts: a brief essay, and a multiple-choice aptitude test, which consists of four separately-timed sections:
two Quantitative, one Verbal, and one Reading Comprehension. Following are sample questions which might appear on both
Upper and Lower Level tests. We suggest that you review these questions in order to familiarize yourself with the SSAT format
and types of questions you will find on the actual test.
Writing Sample
Questions: 1 (essay response)
Time: 25 minutes
What is measured? Your essay will be used by admission officers to assess your writing skills. The exercise is not scored by
SSAT, but a copy of your essay is forwarded to each school you request as a score recipient.
Directions: Read the following topic carefully. Take a few minutes to think about the topic and organize your thoughts before you
begin writing. Use the scratch paper and pen provided. Be sure that your handwriting is legible and that you stay within the lines
and margins.
Sample Topic: It is better to be safe than sorry.
Assignment: Do you agree or disagree with the topic statement? Support your
position with one or two specific examples from personal experience, the experience
of others, current events, history, or literature.
Multiple-Choice
Each question is followed by five answer choices lettered A through E. After you have selected your answer, find the row on the
answer sheet numbered the same as the question and fill in the circle with the same letter as your answer. Be sure to fill in the
circle completely and erase all mistakes completely. Each question has only one correct answer.
Sample answer sheet on page 9. Correct answers on page 6.
Reading Comprehension
Questions: 40 (multiple-choice), based on 6-7 reading passages
Time: 40 minutes
What is measured? Your ability to read quickly and to understand what you read.
Directions: Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions (1-3) about it. For each question, decide on the basis of
the passage which one of the choices best answers the question.
We had had a consuming desire to see a pony rider,
but somehow or other all that passed us streaked by
in the night, and so we heard only a whiz and a hail,
and the swift phantom was gone.
But now the driver exclaims, “Here he comes!”
Every neck is stretched and every eye strained.
Away across the endless dead level of the prairie a
black speck appears against the sky. Soon it becomes
a horse and rider, rising and falling, sweeping nearer
and nearer, and the flutter of hoofs comes faintly to the
ear. Another instant a whoop and hurrah from our upper
deck, a wave of the rider’s hand, but no reply, and man
and horse burst past our excited faces and go winging
away like a belated fragment of a storm!

When you register, you may designate two score recipients, free of

Student Reports
Scores are released to families (by mail, FedEx and e-mail) a few

received your scores within one month of the test date, please contact
info@ssat.org.
Please do not call SSAT before this time to inquire into score status.
Scores will not be released by phone. The writing sample is not
included with the student score report.

Multiple Test Takers
SSAT will only report scores to score recipients listed on a specific
registration and will not automatically send results from other test
dates. If a student takes more than one exam, however, score reports
will identify the student as a multiple test taker. Although other scores
are not reported, schools may choose to verify other scores on file.
Notes:
• 2011-2012 scores will be available until 7/31/13.
• You may manage your 2011-12 scores online until 7/31/12.
• Scores for tests prior to 8/1/10 are no longer available.
How do I read my scores?
Rescoring for Different Grade Level
Your SSAT score report will provide detailed explanations to help you
understand each of your scores, including
Students are scored according to the grade level they report on their
answer sheet at the time of testing. Students should be sure to
indicate their current grade level, not the grade for which they are
applying. June testers should indicate the grade they attended during
the 2011-2012 academic year.
Scaled Scores Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, and Total
Scale for grades 5-7: 440-710 (V/Q/R), 1320-2130 (Total)
Scale for grades 8-11: 500-800 (V/Q/R), 1500-2400 (Total)
SSAT Percentile Ranks for each category
The SSAT ranks (1-99%) compare your scores to those of other
students who have taken the SSAT in the past three years.
Estimated National Percentile Ranks (grades 5-9 only)
The national ranks (1-99%) compare your performance to the national
student population, not only students who have taken the SSAT.
Predicted 12th Grade SAT* Score (grades 7-10 only)
Schools use your scores in different ways: to estimate your ability to
do work in a private school; to compare your performance with other
applicants for admission or with your present academic record; and
to help you improve skills prior to college admissions testing. Each
school evaluates your scores according to its own standards and
requirements. Contact individual schools for more information. SSAT
is a testing service and cannot provide individual score evaluation.
To Cancel Your Test
Sometimes a student may become ill or feel that they did not test to the
best of their ability. To cancel your test, a written request (mail, fax or
e-mail) must be received at SSAT no later than the Tuesday after the
test date (5:00 pm EST). Fees will not be refunded for a cancelled
test or any related services. Scores for a cancelled test will not be
reported to the student or any designated score recipients.
If you wish to see your scores but cancel selected school reports, see “ Add or
Cancel Score Reports.”
2011-2012 SSAT STUDENT REGISTRATION GUIDE
www.ssat.org
To have your test rescored on a different grade level, submit a written
request and $25 rescoring fee. Your revised scores will remain on
file, and your original scores will no longer be available.
Notes: Lower Level tests may be scored for grades 5-7 only, Upper
Level for grades 8-11 only. Revised scores will be sent to your home
and all designated recipients. Rescore within the current academic
year only. Allow two weeks for rescoring results.
Integrity of Scores
SSAT is committed to maintaining score integrity and reserves the right
to cancel a test score whenever there is any reason to question the
integrity of that score. If a score is questioned, the test taker will have
an opportunity to supply additional information, confirm the scores
under question by taking the SSAT again, or resolve the matter
otherwise.
In no situation may any portion of the exam be omitted or skipped. Any
exam in which the student does not complete each of the five sections
is considered incomplete and cannot be scored by SSAT.

COMMON NOTIFICATION AND REPLY DATES: Members designated with a u will begin communicating formal admission decisions to
applicants and their parents on MARCH 10, 2012 and expect parents of accepted students to formally notify (in writing or by telephone)
these schools of the student’s intent to enroll or not to enroll by APRIL 10, 2012.
STANDARD APPLICATION ONLINE (SAO): Many of the SSAT member schools listed below accept the Standard Application Online. To

SSAT Member Consultants and Organizations
Although most families apply directly to the independent schools of their choice, others seek the advice and expertise of educational consultants
(individuals and organizations) which seek to place students in appropriate schools. Many have professional educational consulting degrees;
others are practicing psychologists. Most have extensive expertise working with students at the secondary school level. Consultants’ primary
concern is for the family for which they work; they are not paid by schools to identify students, and they usually bill the family directly for their
services. If you choose to use an educational consultant, be sure that the consultant receives a copy of your SSAT scores. The names and
member codes of eligible consultants are listed below. Find the most current list of consultants and organizations online at www.ssat.org.

Eligibility
A student with a school-documented disability may apply for
special testing accommodations for a national or international
SSAT administration. Only students who can provide school
documentation that verifies that they routinely receive special
accommodations in their current school setting will be
approved.
Special accommodations are not available for temporary
disabilities, such as a broken arm.
Students requesting only extra time, if it is routinely permitted
in their current academic setting, may apply for a standard 30minute extension to the end of the test.
Students with other requirements may also apply for special
testing accommodations. With SSAT approval and evaluator
verification, additional accommodations may include:
•
•
•
•
Permission to mark answers directly in test booklet
Large print test booklet and materials
Use of laptop computer with spelling aid for writing sample
Extra Time (1.5 x standard time per section).
Special Accommodations Approval Letter
After your accommodations request has been received
and approved, SSAT will mail a Special Accommodations Approval letter to you.
Your approval letter includes:
• student information and SSAT registration ID
• assigned test center
• approved accommodations
• test day instructions
Your admission ticket will be mailed separately. Be
sure to bring both your admission ticket and approval
letter with you to the test.
Review your Special Accommodations Approval Letter
to ensure that your student information is accurate.
Contact SSAT at info@ssat.org with corrections or if
you do not receive an approval letter.
Requests for Extra Time Only (30-Minute Period)
Requests for Other Accommodations
Deadline for Application:
• Application form must be received by SSAT two weeks
before test date (late registration deadline).
Deadline for Application:
• All documentation must be received by SSAT three weeks
before test date (regular registration deadline).
For flex registrations, documentation is due two weeks prior
to the test date.

• Special Testing Application (A), signed by an official at
the student’s current school, which verifies that the
student is routinely permitted additional time for testing at
the school.*
Test Sites:
• Extra time (30-minute period) available at all scheduled
national test sites listed on pages 15-19.
Approved students will be provided an additional 30-minute
period at the end of the test, during which time they may work
on any of the four multiple-choice sections of the test (writing
sample excluded). Students must remain in the test room for
the full 30-minute test period. Total testing time: 3 hours, 5
minutes (plus breaks).
Students granted this accommodation may be tested in the
main testing area, or in a separate group, at the discretion of
the administrator. Separate or individual testing is not
guaranteed or implied.
Required Documentation:
• Special Testing Application (B), signed by an official at
the student’s current school, which verifies that the student
is routinely permitted the requested accommodations at the
school.
• A copy of the school’s IEP (or equivalent) that qualifies the
student for the accommodations requested. See form for
more information and restrictions.*
Test Sites:
• Limited availability; select a site from the list on pages 22-24.
• Sites and seats for the 10/15/11 test are extremely limited.
Online registration is recommended to determine availability.
• Approved students are tested together in a classroom

• Students approved for assistance by an individual in addition to the regular proctor (such as reader or scribe) are responsible for
providing a non-family member (such as tutor, counselor or other academic professional) for this purpose.
• Students with diabetes may or may not need to be approved for Special Accommodations, depending upon their needs.
Please visit www.ssat.org and review the Special Accommodations section for complete information.
