Setting the Standard for the Future of Nursing
a career where helping to improve the lives of patients and families is a daily
mission. Nursing is an art and a science that provides a human service. It integrates biological principles,
behavioral sciences, technological theories, research and caring to assist individuals and families to reach
their maximum health potential.
More options are available for nurses than ever before. As members of the health care team, nurses
may practice in acute care facilities, long term care agencies, home health environments and a variety
of specialized settings. Additional areas of practice may include alternative and complementary therapies,
pharmaceutical sales, nursing education and research.
For information on the current state of the nursing profession, as well as industry projections, visit
the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ website at www.bls.gov.
At Hondros College, we believe:
• Students with a passion for success can achieve their goals with our focused and unique
approach to education.
• Education requires a balance of technical skills along with compassion, critical thinking and
effective communication skills.
• We provide the best education for our students by:
- Stimulating and developing each students’ abilities and enhancing individual growth
- Maintaining a team of professional faculty with extensive real world experience
- Establishing the highest standards of professional capabilities and ethical conduct
- Providing educational growth opportunities throughout their career.
A message from our faculty
There are many reasons to explore nursing as a career. Nurses have the privilege of being with others during life’s most powerful
experiences. Imagine beginning each day looking forward to the challenge and fulfillment ahead as you help bring a new life into
the world or provide comfort to someone in need. Nurses are often referred to as the faces of caring. It is no wonder year after year
nurses are voted as the most honest and ethical of all professions. The nursing programs at Hondros College reflect these values of
caring, honesty and integrity and are designed to help those interested in nursing achieve their career goals from practical nursing
through the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The faculty, staff and administration of the college are here to help you become
the nurse of tomorrow.
Best wishes on your educational endeavors!

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) promote the health and well being of individuals under the direction of licensed
physicians, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, and podiatrists. As an LPN, you will
provide direct nursing care in a variety of health care settings. You may perform routine laboratory tests, administer medications,
monitor intravenous therapy and contribute to the patient’s plan of care.
Registered nurses (RNs) treat and care for patients, educate patients on various medical conditions, and provide support for a
patient’s family. An RN is responsible for recording a patient’s medical history and current symptoms, assessing the patient, performing
diagnostic tests, administering treatments, and maintaining IV lines. The RN is responsible for establishing the plan of care, assigning
tasks to LPNs and delegating to unlicensed assistive personnel.
Nurses with BSN degrees and advanced education are in growing demand. In October 2010, the Institute of Medicine
released its landmark report on The Future of Nursing, initiated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which called for increasing the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the workforce to 80% by 2020. The expert committee charged with preparing the
evidence-based recommendations in this report state that “to respond to the demands of an evolving health care system and meet the
changing needs of patients, nurses must achieve higher levels of education.”

PREPARING FOR THE TEST
1. Purchase the Study Guide in the Bookstore any day Monday – Friday from 8am - 5pm
• Study Chapters 1-4 for testing
• Read Chapter 7 to acquaint yourself with some medical information
2. Visit: www.quizlet.com/221907/hesi-vocabulary-flash-cards/
• Study vocabulary and take tests
3. Visit: www.studystack.com
• Select Nursing – Select Root words, Prefixes, Suffixes, and Terminology. This is a fun way to learn medical
terminology basics that will help you with your test.
• Select Vocabulary – These exercises will strengthen your vocabulary skills.
4. Visit: www.coolmath.com
• On this website you can do exercises with fractions etc. to build your skills.
5. Visit: www.dictionary.com
• This website will provide you with the opportunity to look up the synonyms and antonyms of the words in the
vocabulary section of the study guide. Not all of the words in the vocabulary section of the study guide will be
on the exam but words similar to them may be, so looking up the synonyms and antonyms of the words can be
very helpful.
6. Visit: www.evolve.elsevier.com
• This website has quick reference guides available to you that could prove to be useful.
It is important that all students take this exam seriously, as there may be only one chance to take and pass the exam. You
will need 2-7 days to study. Most individuals have been exposed to this information in the past, but refreshing your skills is
pertinent to your success. There is a calculator on the computer for math, but it will not help you with fractions, ratios and
the metric system. The preparation time is worth the reward!

High School. Thirty five years later, I was a college freshman
enrolled in the LPN program at Hondros College. That’s
taking a little time off between classes. And, at the time, the
prospect of entering a formal educational setting seemed a
daunting task. But I could not have made a better choice
than Hondros. ...I was challenged in new ways by all my
professors, and I was offered every tool needed to achieve
my goals. Now, the state of Ohio has proclaimed that I am
Warren Pierce LPN. Thanks to all at Hondros that made this
possible for me and my family. ...Believe me, it is NOT too
late. Seize the day!!
