a message from the Board Chair & President/CEO
At the Intersection
Last year was an incredible year for the Johnson County
Community Foundation ( JCCF). A big thank you goes to more than
1,000 community caregivers for helping strengthen the foundation
and the Johnson County community last year. Johnson County
is fortunate to have a community of caregivers that continue
to connect with causes that matter. It only takes one caring
connection to change a person’s life forever.
As you will read in this report, through the generosity of our
community caregivers, JCCF provided more than $750,000 in
benefits to Johnson County including grants to a variety of fieldsof-interests, scholarships to deserving youth, leadership for several
projects and workshops for businesses, both for and nonprofit.
The intersections of caring Ü connecting were found from
east Ü west and north Ü south throughout the county.
Specifically for JCCF, six special caregivers helped renovate
and refresh JCCF’s historic 1903 home. These caregivers were
contributing in memory of or honoring loved ones or simply saw
the need to connect their contributions with historic preservation.
These contributors are now lifetime members of JCCF’s Circle of
Friends and donors to the Manor Fund. The word “thanks” does
not seem to be enough to honor such generous benefactors.
JCCF’s electronic communication connections were also enhanced
in 2012. The JCCF Board of Directors made a commitment based
on the strategic plan to develop a highly interactive website for
contributors, grant seekers, students seeking scholarships and
other interested parties. E-newsletters and social media have also
been given a high priority to further connect those who care with
their personal interests and causes.
And finally, the financial foundation of JCCF grew substantially
last year. Cared for by the Investment Committee, the return on
those assets was more than 13% and other contributions grew by
leaps and bounds. At the end of 2012, the total assets were above
$17 million due to investment returns and contributions. Because
of the fiscal caregivers who work with JCCF, we are in the best
financial shape we have been in years.
The positives noted above set the direction for further connecting
people who care with causes that matter. Without those who
strive to make Johnson County better, we would not have
the “intersection of caring and connecting.”

administered by the foundation may
not grant awards every year. There are
a number of possible reasons for this

Gala
JCCF
2012
Greenwood Fire
Department Honor Guard
Gala | 11.10.2012
The 18th Annual Gala
of the foundation was a
patriotic-themed affair
that honored those who
have and continue to
serve our country. The
elegant atmosphere
created in the Johnson
County National Guard
Armory made for a
great evening of dining,
dancing and friendship.
A highlight of the evening
was the presentation of
the Foundation Spirit
Award to Dean Abplanalp,
board member, for his
tireless efforts to serve
the foundation.
Abplanalp
The event raised more
than $60,000 for JCCF
operations and a variety
of community initiatives
throughout the year.
