Why do so many people enjoy hearing and reading ghost stories? One reason must be that we enjoy feeling
scared—though only as long as we know that the person or thing that is scaring us is not real. In other words,
most people who are attracted to these occult tales do not necessarily believe in ghosts. The key to the
intrinsic appeal of such stories is that they permeate our imaginations and challenge our sense of what is
possible. For this reason, it should not be surprising that some of the world’s finest writers, especially during
the nineteenth century, were drawn to the genre. Edith Wharton, Henry James, and Mark Twain are just of
few of those who produced stories about mysterious spirits and otherworldly interlopers who come into
people’s lives and make their presence felt.
