Among the presentations, coaches heard from American Dairy Association and Dairy Council-sponsored event speakers Joe Morris, former New York Giants player, and Dan Liburd, Buffalo Bills Strength and Conditioning Coach. During his presentation on February 5, Liburd emphasized the nutrition component of Fuel Up to Play 60, a dairy farmer-sponsored in-school fitness and nutrition program. Liburd shared the Buffalo Bills’ Stay Lean Principles and explained how dairy and other protein-rich food enhances body composition, improves performance and maximizes recovery to help players achieve success. We’ve looked at who is getting all-state awards and other stuff. This is very challenging because every player that tries out for the team is a very good player. I have watched a number of tapes and every kid is impressive. It will be very tough to select the top 50 kids.” Santini says that Lynch and Hogan were chosen, in part, due to the winning records the programs have posted in recent years. “In the past we have chosen the coaches from different sections around the state,” he said, “and it was their time to take over. Both of these guys come from good programs and have been very successful. It was a good fit for both teams.” Both coaches will have to incorporate strategies while keeping in mind that all-star games have different rules than regular high school games. “A lot of the strategy is governed by the rules for the game,” Santini said. “No blitzing is allowed. On Extrapoint kicks, there is no rushing the kicker. You can only rush four men on a punt. You must play a 4-3 defense.” Hogan says that can be a lot to digest for both coaches and players. “We will be able to run six practices over three days,” he said, “and then we have the game on Sunday. It can be a lot to take in.” a great football coach but he just felt it was time to step away from being the head guy.” Both Green and Hogan were assistants under longtime coach Dick Russ who won several Section 4 titles before there was a NYS tournament. Hogan says that there are many reasons that Chenango Forks has been a longtime powerhouse in the Southern Tier. “First of all, the community supports the sport,” he said. “The community supports the high school team all the way down to the Youth program. The kids are all coachable and work very hard. Football is important to them and they take it very seriously.” Continuity in the coaching staff is also a key factor. “We have had the same coaching staff for 20 years now,” Hogan said. “Our JV coaches are former players and the modified coaches are too. So everyone knows what we are trying to do and what we want to accomplish. It makes a difference.” Hogan says he is excited to get involved with a highprofile all-star game. “It’s definitely a nice opportunity,” he said. “We’ve got 10 coaches on staff for the game and it will be a new experience for all of us. It will be challenging.” Like Lynch at North Rockland, Hogan says the most difficult part of the game will be choosing the team. “We’ll have our first tryout on May 17th,” he said. “We A new day in data. See Classic on page 14 13 Classic continued from page 13 “At that time, we couldn’t put a lot of money into a game of this magnitude,” Santini said, “but we had a major sponsor who took care of a lot of things for us. When that sponsor dropped out, we couldn’t continue the game.” For Santini, who has been involved with the NYSHSFCA since its inception in 1992, admitting that the Upstate-Downstate game had to be cancelled was a huge disappointment. “It was very disappointing for everybody,” he said. “This was one of our big things that we were doing for our kids and we just couldn’t do it anymore. All those years we had been growing the association and getting bigger, doing more things and suddenly, we had to take a step back. It was a very sad situation.” However, Santini said, the Board members of the NYSHSFCA never let go of the idea of hosting a bigtime all-star game. “We all wanted to get the game back,” he said, “but we needed to get our own finances in order first. Then we needed to find a sponsor to help us.” Santini said the NYSHSFCA is on much firmer ground than it was three years ago. “We’ve all been working on this for two years,” he said. “We’ve got more memberships now and the attendance at our clinic this year was fantastic. Those two things, memberships and our clinic, is how we pay for things like this game.” Landing the U.S. Army as a sponsor was the final piece to returning to the field. “The NYSHSFCA is now the major sponsor but we could not do Photo by Mark Adair this without the U.S. Army,” Santini The Downstate team dominated the said. “They have game played in 2011. been a tremendous help.” As things began to fall into place, it became clear that the NYSHSFCA would again host a state-wide allstar game. “I was pretty confidant that it was going to be played,” Santini said, “but I didn't really get excited until we actually signed everything.” Moving the game to a smaller venue like Ithaca College, as opposed to the Carrier Dome at Syracuse, has also been a positive change. Santini says that Ithaca College coach Mike Welch has been more than welcoming to the NYSHSFCA. “Mike Welch is very happy that we are going to be there,” Santini said. “He’s been a big help to us.” In conjunction with the game, NYSHSFCA will also be running the Super Combine that morning. The Photo by Mark Adair NYSHSFCA is Despite the fact the Classic is an hosting combines all-star contest, the actual game is at several locations as intense as a playoff match-up. throughout NY State in May. Players will be separated by positions (OL-DL; RB-WR; LB-DB and QB) and will compete in combine-like skills. “Players with the top 250 scores will be invited to the Super Combine in Ithaca,” Santini said. The Super Combine will be held at 9am the morning of the game. Players at the Super Combine are also invited to watch the Upstate-Downstate game. Santini says that, despite all the excitement of getting the Classic back, there have been a few logistical challenges to overcome. “We haven’t done this in two years,” Santini said. “Our last sponsor had provided a number of people to help with things like the registration in the weeks leading up to the game. We are scrambling to get people to take up that load of work. All the Board Members have put a ton of time and effort on this. We’re a little nervous because a lot of these administrative tasks are new to us.” So, while there is rampant excitement about the return of the Upstate-Downstate Classic, Santini does temper his enthusiasm. “I’m excited,” he said, “but I still want to wait to see how successful we are this year.” 14 2015 Recruiting Season Canisius as five players moving on to play Division I football Since he was named received some form of the head coach at scholarship to play colCanisius before the 2011 lege football. season, Rich Robbins has “We'll put 12 kids into built the program most school with financial aid,” fearsome football he said, “and that's just machine in New York unheard of in New York State. No seniors are listed... the seniors, by now, have already made their decisions on where they are playing football next year. T H E EXTRA P O I N What does this list mean? This list does not mean a single player named will receive a scholarship to play football. In fact, most of the kids on this list will not play football at any level never mind earn a football scholarship. The fact is, New York State had just 32 players earn scholarships to play football last year. So, this is not a list of 4- and 5-star recruits. It is simply a list of players that, right now, are talented enough to be looked at by college coaches... and nothing more. This is a guide to help college coaches get started in requesting film, doing their background checks and making inquiries about grades on players that might be able to play for them. T By Mark Adair In January of 2014, the NYS Football Coaches Association and I embarked on an ambitious project. We wanted to publish a “Recruiting Watch List” for high school players from across New York State. We hoped to accomplish two things with our list. First, we want to create some excitement about high school football in April - create some “buzz”, so to speak. For almost a century, the “Hot Stove Talk” has generated excitement about baseball in the dead of winter. Talk about the NFL Draft comsumes fans of the NFL in April. Campuses across the country are holding their spring football games right now. We thought that we could do the same for high school football. The second thing we wanted to accomplish was to get our kids names out into the public so that college coaches will take a look at them. Let’s be honest... New York State lags far behind Texas, Florida and Ohio when it comes to getting football scholarships - or even exposure - for our kids. We thought that if we could just get a “semi-official” list into the hands of the college coaches, it would help them in their pursuit of kids that have the talent to play for them. Inside this issue, is our second Watch List. We have listed every high school football player who was nominated to be on the New York Recruiting Watch List. On this Watch List are the names of more than 1,000 players from more than 200 schools from across the state. These are kids that college football coaches should take a look at. We have broken the list down into geographical sections and broken them down further by school. Kids are listed by position with their heights, weights and their Hopefully, college coaches will find our Recruiting Watch List a help in finding players from our state. If my player is not on the list, does that mean he’s not good enough to play college football? Not necessarily. It means that right now, he is not being recruited. But, some kids grow an incredible amount between their freshman and sophomore years. Kids can start hitting the weight room. Kids can start working hard at camps. Some kids, who are less than impressive as sophomores, surprise everyone during their junior season and become stand outs. The best advice a player could get is... if you are not on the list this year, work hard so you can be on the list next year. How did we go about getting the information? An email was sent to every high school football coach in the state. The email was followed-up with a phone call. After the phone call, a second email was sent. (If your school is not listed, it’s because we received no reply to our inquries from the coach.) We have listed every nominated player from 8th grade to the 11th grade. Hopefully, college coaches will find our Recruiting Watch List a help in finding players from our state. 29
