ALEX Lesson Plan: Modeling Mitosis This lesson provided by: Author: Shirley Scarbrough Organization: Alabama State University Math-science Pa And Author: Ruth Liddell Organization: Alabama State University Math-Science Pa And Author: Debbie Payne System: School: Lesson Plan ID: Title: Overview/Annotation: Content Standard(s): 33344 Modeling Mitosis The Modeling Mitosis module includes hands-on inquiry-based activities. This module provides three different methods for learning about Mitosis. Using yarn and popsicle sticks, students will model and explain what happens in each of the various stages of Mitosis. Students will prepare and examine slides of their cheek cells and compare them to those of other students. This will demonstrate the relationship between structure and function of cells and, also, the similarity of the same types of cells within the same species. The students will observe prepared slides of onion root tips and whitefish blastula to discover the differences in mitosis in plant and animal cells. SC(7) SC(7) SC(7) 1. Describe characteristics common to living things, including growth and development, reproduction, cellular organization, use of energy, exchange of gases, and response to the environment. 2. Identify functions of organelles found in eukaryotic cells, including the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and vacuoles. 8. Describe the function of chromosomes. Local/National Standards: Primary Learning Objective(s): 1. The student will model mitosis to identify and describe the process in full or in any one of the stages. 2. The student will recognize and sketch any one of the stages of Mitosis from prepared slides of an onion root tip and a white fish blastula. 3. The student will explain Mitosis to group members as he models the process. file:///C|/...ESSON%20PLANS%20in%20ALEX%20format/ASU%20ALEX%20Lesson%20Plan%20%20Modeling%20Mitosis.htm[6/17/2014 8:53:48 AM] ALEX Lesson Plan: Modeling Mitosis Additional Learning Objective(s): Approximate Duration of Time Not Specified the Lesson: Materials and Equipment: Cheek Cell Lab: toothpicks, dropper bottle of water, blank slides, cover slips, Methylene Blue, microscopes, plastic container with dilute bleach solution.
