Welcome Letter
In this, Old Bill’s seventeenth year, we joined together as a community not to
merely say “Thanks a million” to Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill, but instead to shout,
“Thanks a hundred million!”
Instead of the hoped-for $9 million, our community of over-achievers raised
$9,809,404.13 for a lifetime total of $100,749,625.78 for local nonprofits.
Today, one out of every three households participates in this annual celebration,
and the median gift is still $250; we live in a community where everyone is a
philanthropist regardless of net worth. None of this would have been possible
without the inspiration and selfless generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill and their
fellow Co-Challengers.
Supporting causes that are close to home and
close to the heart is the essence of the Community
Foundation of Jackson Hole. We help donors
achieve their philanthropic goals by providing a
variety of charitable giving options and prudently
investing their funds. Planned gifts assure donors
that they will continue to have a meaningful impact
on local concerns far into the future. Nonprofits
rely on us for professional workshops, competitive
grant opportunities, a website to connect
volunteers with the organizations that need them,
and of course, Old Bill’s Fun Run. With our
Youth Philanthropy program we are passing along the responsibility for our valley
to the next generation and providing the tools for thoughtful stewardship.
Jackson Hole inspires all of us to invest in the enrichment of our strong cohesive
community. Most of us came from someplace else, but once we arrived here,
we knew we were home. “Thanks a hundred million” just begins to describe
our gratitude.

After you’ve lived here,
you don’t want to live anywhere else.
Maralyn
& Grant
Larson
Grant: My parents moved to Jackson in
1950 and started a restaurant called the Silver
Spur. They had a connection here, because
my grandparents ran a store. I was attending the
University of Utah, and each summer I’d travel
to Jackson to help with the restaurant. After
Maralyn and I married, I graduated from college
and became an Air Force Pilot. We moved around
with the Air Force for 3 years, but we ultimately
made our home in Jackson.
Maralyn:
Grant and I met at CIT Credit
Corporation where we both worked. I invited
him to a dance. We worked together for 3 years,
and then I attended Utah State University. We
were married in 1954.
We’ve seen lots of changes in Jackson.

Grant: It was a struggle to live here in the early
days, but Maralyn and I have been fortunate to
run several successful businesses. After my father
passed away, we sold the Silver Spur. We’ve been
in almost every kind of business there is: motels,
bars, knick knack shops, a theater and a drive-in.
We built them up then sold them. We owned the
Valley Shop, a provider of office supplies, for 20
years. The Valley Shop also sold western books
at the height of the industry. We loved the book
business but knew it was quickly being taken over
by big box stores.
Maralyn: We ran the cafeteria at the bottom of
Inspire
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort when it opened
in 1965. We’d spend hours on the ski slopes
during the quiet times. They were virtually
untouched back then. The tram was still under
construction.
We receive more blessings than we give.
Maralyn: I’ve been most active in social services.
Twenty years ago, I joined a group of folks in
starting the lay chaplain program at the hospital.
We wanted to provide holistic patient care, so we
worked with the local pastors to bring this service
to our community. I also worked on the steering
committee to raise funds for the new Senior
Center and delivered senior meals for ten years.
Grant: Service is an important part of our
lives. If you live in a community, you have to
be prepared to give back. If you want things to
get done, you have to be willing to help and do
some of it yourself. That’s part of the reason I’ve
been so involved in public service. I’ve served on
many boards and commissions in the County
and State, but the most rewarding job was being
President of the Wyoming Senate and serving in
the Senate for 16 years.
I can’t imagine anywhere with a community
foundation like ours.
Maralyn:
People here are so generous and
engaged. They want to find ways to create a better
community by giving money or time.
Grant: We’ve loved our Donor Advised Fund
and what we’ve been able to do with it. The
Foundation helped us give to many diverse causes
such as Wounded Warriors, the University of
Wyoming, scholarships for local students and
many local service organizations. Working with
the Community Foundation lets you simplify the
accounting and tax implications while supporting
your passions. The staff is incredibly responsive.
It doesn’t get any better than that. If you want to
be philanthropic, a Donor Advised Fund is the
way to do it.
Maralyn was born and raised in Utah and has devoted her life to human services ever since she and Grant moved to Jackson
in 1958. She spent 20 years as a volunteer at the St. John’s Living Center and 10 years delivering Meals-on-Wheels as well
as many years as a docent at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Her dedication to service earned her a spot as a semifinalist for the Jefferson Award – a Presidential Award for volunteerism. Grant grew up in Provo, Utah, where he first became
interested in politics after listening to his first convention on the radio. Grant was appointed to the Wyoming Highway
Commission and the Jackson Hole Airport Board, and he was elected to public office as a Teton County Commissioner, the
County Chairman for the Republican Party, and as a Wyoming State Senator. Grant volunteered as both a board member and
subsequent president of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Golf & Tennis Clubs. He served on the Board
of Jackson State Bank for over 30 years, including a term as Chairman of the Board. Grant and Maralyn are parents to Terry,
Kevin and Karin. Kevin passed away in 1994. Terry and Karin and their spouses live in Jackson.

Through its Competitive Grants program, the Community Foundation supports projects with significant local
impact. Applications are reviewed twice a year by a diverse committee of local volunteers; funding for this program
is provided by Old Bill’s Fun Run Co-Challengers, private donors and endowed funds held at the Foundation. The
Micro Grants program provides small amounts of money for projects that are unique, unexpected and demonstrate

Lannie: Most of the people who live here
have consciously chosen to do so. They love
the environment, the mountains. They live
here for the skiing, the hiking, the fishing, the
biking. But, in addition to their activities, they
are involved and giving back to the community.
There are at least five things per week that I wish
I had the time to get to, which is spectacular for
a community this size to have so much going on.

Bill:
I don’t think we’ve ever felt at home as
quickly as we have here. In the summers, it
doesn’t matter what you want to do- a fifty mile
bike ride, climb the pass on your bike, fly fish
- it’s two or three phone calls and you’ve got a
partner in crime to go with you.
Like a lot of people, we started by giving to
our alma maters.
Inspire
Lannie: Then we decided that we would have a
better impact if we were making the decisions on
a more local basis, so over the last twenty years,
our focus has been the community in which we
live. In Seattle, we were very involved in both
SeaDoc, an organization that works to protect
marine wildlife and ecosystems in the Salish
Sea, and the UW’s School of Medicine and their
sports medicine programs. I love being able to
change the life of a child, or provide something
special for education. It doesn’t always take a lot
of money, it takes some thoughtful giving.
Lannie:
The mantra’s always been time,
treasure, or talent, and we’re trying to do all
three at this point. Time is something that we
all have, that we should give.
Bill: I just gave treasure for as long as I could,
but I realized you can offer a lot more back if
you’re invested personally.
We knew this was going to be home and it was
so obvious to us that the one thing that helped
everybody in Jackson Hole was Old Bill’s and
the Community Foundation. That was where
we started, and the first thing we did was
become Co-Challengers.
Lannie: You sit there at the Old Bill’s Fun Run
and you think “this is overwhelming”, but
it is a wonderful way of getting to know all the
different organizations.
Bill: I can’t do things I don’t really believe in. I
can’t do things that don’t give me some psychic
benefit, some happiness in some way. When I
like something, it’s rather obvious.
Lannie: Mr. Enthusiasm.
Bill: The Old Bill’s Awards Party is almost as
fun as going to Old Bill’s itself. This community
comes together to receive their checks, and
the sense of togetherness and sharing is just
spectacular. I put it on a list and say, “please
don’t schedule anything on this date; I want to
be there for it.” It’s great.
Lannie grew up in New Canaan Connecticut and has a Master’s of Science in historic preservation from Columbia University.
She worked for the National Trust and Christie’s Auction House before becoming a full-time mother and volunteer. She
currently serves as Chair of the Board for the Library Foundation. Bill, a “corporate brat”, grew up in the Midwest, Scotland,
and eventually the east coast. After earning an MBA from the University of Chicago, Bill worked at J.P. Morgan in New
York, London, and Chicago for 19 years, and later in Seattle in the cellular telephone business before “retiring” in 2000 and
becoming part owner of Safe Boats. After moving to Jackson in 2005, Bill joined the boards of the Community Foundation and
the Teton County Search and Rescue Foundation. The college sweethearts recently welcomed their first grandson and eagerly
await the arrival of their second in the summer of 2014.

& NED JANNOTTA
We met because a very close friend of mine in
college was Ned’s cousin. Since there were
no men at Smith, one weekend Mary said,
“Let’s go down to Princeton, see my cousin,
have some fun.” And we did.
Ned: Surprised me. And that was pretty much it.
Erika: We’ve been married for 28 years, or as
Ned says, “28 looong years.”
It’s a small town, but it has a very worldly
population.
Ned: We moved to Jackson full-time in 2006. It
just feels right to be here. There are endless things
to do, and it’s lots of fun to share that together,
with our kids, and with our friends as well.

Erika: You have people with incredibly diverse
talents, interests and professions. We’re all
drawn to Jackson Hole by the ability to do these
amazing activities, so we have that in common
right away.
We’re going to have our hands full over the
next fifty years looking after this place. But
we’ve got a good start on it.
Inspire
Ned: This is one of the only intact ecosystems
in the lower 48 states. It’s a unique asset, and it’s
something that we really need to protect. There
are so many threats to that ecosystem, because
there are more and more people coming into this
area; it’s just harder for the animals to survive.
Where we want to build our homes happens to
also be the best winter habitat, and winter habitat
is basically what determines the populations
of wildlife that can be sustained here. It’s a
balancing act. We have to be vigilant to make
sure we’re doing everything we can as a society
and a community to provide the animals the best
opportunity possible to survive and thrive.
I remember Ned’s mother, Debby, saying to us
once that she felt very strongly that when she
gives to somebody or to some organization,
it initiates positive momentum. If I give to
you, then you’ll give to someone else, and
that person will give to someone else. I like to
think about philanthropy in that way, that it
has an incredible ripple effect.
Erika:
My first memory of doing something
philanthropic was when I was in seventh grade
and my friend and I baked all these cookies, went
to the local mall and sold them, and gave all the
money to save the seals.
Ned: In Chicago, I became involved with the
Food Depository, an amazing organization. Our
kids spent days sorting food there, which was

their first introduction to volunteering.
Erika:
That’s why I feel strongly about the
Youth Philanthropy program at the Community
Foundation; I like to see young people thinking
about what organizations they view as important
and how they can help them – whether by
volunteering, donating or sharing ideas. So we’ve
done some things with our kids along those lines.
Alex, Max and Sammie see what we’re doing, what
our interests are. That really excites me, that
they’re invested in philanthropy as they grow up.
When you do it as a family, it can be
incredibly fun and rewarding.
Erika: Whether you want to work or be involved
in local nonprofits, it’s a great way to be
connected. Otherwise, even if you live here, you
sort of feel like you’re on vacation. The best part
about being on the boards of the Community
Foundation and Off Square, and now the Center
of Wonder, is that I feel like I’m part of the fabric
of the community.
Erika was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago and returned there after graduation from Smith to work in the
film business before earning an MBA from Northwestern. Erika worked for Chicago’s PBS Station until the birth of her second
child. As a board member of the Community Foundation, Erika chairs the Grants Committee, oversees the Youth Philanthropy
program, and serves on the Executive Committee. Also from Chicago, Ned graduated from Princeton and has an MBA from
Harvard. He spent 25 years working in the private equity business, primarily at GTCR, where he was Managing Principal
before moving to Jackson. Since retiring from GTCR in 2011, Ned has continued to invest in a variety of private companies.
Ned serves as Treasurer on the boards of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and the Teton County Search and Rescue
Foundation. Erika and Ned are fund holders at the Community Foundation and Bronze Co-Challengers for Old Bill’s Fun Run.

2013 Youth Philanthropy Competitive Grants
Through the Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy program, over 60 local high school
students are learning how to award grants effectively by soliciting and reviewing applications, meeting
with charitable organizations and discussing strategies for community impact. Donors, who have raised

In 2013, a Youth Philanthropy scholarship was awarded for the first time. Funded by an anonymous
donor, the recipient of the Future Mr. (or Mrs.) Old Bill Scholarship receives $1,500 toward college
tuition and $500 to grant to the nonprofit of his or her choice. Three other finalists each receive $250
to grant to their favorite charities.
The finalists for the 2013 Future Mr. Old Bill Scholarship:
Meg Williams, Journeys School, volunteered at PAWS and the Eco fair, putting in over 100 hours of
community service during high school, and spent her summer studying the conch shell as a volunteer
(22) with Earth Watch in Belize.
Alec Meacham, Summit High School, volunteered at PAWS, participated in the highway cleanup
program and helped to eliminate noxious weeds in the Bridger-Teton Forest.
Juan Vazquez, Jackson Hole High School, volunteered at the Library and the Institute for Cognitive
Health, helping those struggling with dementia.

Victor Hernandez, Jackson Hole Community School, has been involved with the Youth Philanthropy
Program for 3 years. He volunteered for Teen Power, was on the young adult board at the Teton

The Legacy Society, established in 2002, recognizes donors who have made a gift to charity in their will or other
estate plans. Planned gifts may include revocable as well as irrevocable bequest and trust arrangements.
In 2013, we lost one of our beloved founders, Jean Adams, whose vision and tenacious enthusiasm created the
Community Foundation of Jackson Hole in 1989. We are also grateful for the extraordinary generosity of Pike
H. Sullivan, Jr. whose bequests have significantly benefited our community and will transform our valley for

Due to the incredible support of an ever-expanding group of Community Challengers, 2013 was a banner
year for the Community Foundation of Teton Valley!
• Donations to the Tin Cup Challenge, our signature fundraising event (modeled after
Old Bill’s), exceeded $1 million for the third year in a row, bringing our six-year total
(26) to nearly $6 million.
• This generosity allowed us to award a 54 % match to local nonprofits (the highest Tin Cup
match yet) and to expand our programs and staff.
• We created an online reference (www.tetonvalleyresourcedirectory.com) to share valuable information about community resources — a critical need identified in our 2012 Health and Human Services Needs Assessment — and have hosted a series of facilitated meetings, called “Filling the Gaps in Teton Valley,” to enhance coordination of these services.
• Our Youth Philanthropy program at Teton High School involved 40-plus students in its
second year.
• Since 2008, our Grants Program has awarded nearly $162,000 to local nonprofit organizations.
