It is an honor to be selected to marshal your fellow graduates in the commencement ceremonies. To distinguish the student marshals from the remaining graduating class, each marshal wears a red and white cord with his or her regalia. As leaders of their graduating class, student marshals also serve as point persons for those needing assistance as we assemble for the procession. National Honor Societies UH West O‘ahu Student Awards Clydette Self Outstanding Accounting Student In addition to the red cord which signifies graduation with distinction (minimum of 30 UH West O‘ahu credits with a GPA of 3.75), some disciplines and student honor organizations recognize members by having them don colored honor cords, sashes, and other regalia upon graduation. Gowns were dark and billowing to hide ink stains and to retain warmth. Scholars wore hoods which could be used as carrying pouches or as head coverings in inclement weather. Today, the cut of the gown represents the scholarly rank attained: gowns with open sleeves for bachelor’s degrees, gowns with closed sleeves for master’s degrees, and gowns with bell-shaped sleeves and black velvet panels and bars for doctoral degrees. Most gowns are black; however, other colors are sometimes worn to represent institutional colors. Modern hoods drape down the back of the gown and are worn by holders of advanced degrees; the colors represent the discipline and institution. The flat mortarboard cap is a modern representation of a stocking cap which was designed to hold a small book on the head. Commencement Mace The mace brings to the commencement ceremony a tradition that began in the Middle Ages. The mace was originally a weapon of war; however, as early as the 13th century, the warlike image of the mace began to diminish, and the mace became a symbol of peaceful leadership. Today, it has come to represent the academic authority of colleges and it is carried by the Chair of the Faculty Senate. UH West O‘ahu’s commencement mace was hand-crafted by local artist Cliff Rawlins. Measuring almost 50 inches in length, the artist hand selected a piece of indigenous koa wood from the South Point of the Big Island of Hawai‘i and complements it with chocolate brown milo wood from Kāne‘ohe. This unique piece signifies the blending of nature’s elements to create a symbolic tradition for UH West O‘ahu. Songs National Anthem The Star-Spangled Banner By Francis Scott Key, 1814 O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming And the rockets’ red glare the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave Hawai‘i Pono‘ī By King David Kalākaua, 1874 Music by Henri Berger Hawai‘i pono‘ī Nānā i kou mō‘ī Ka lani ali‘i, Ke ali‘i Makua lani ē Kamehameha ē Nā kaua e pale Me ka ihe Pomp and Circumstance By Edgar Elgar Fanfare and Recessional (Concentrations in Accounting, Finance, General Business Administration, Management, and Marketing) Bachelor of Applied Science (Concentrations in Computing, Electronics & Networking Technology, Creative Media, Culinary Management, Information Technology, Information Security Assurance and Respiratory Care) Alberto, Albert (CENT) Ishida, Timothy (IT) Omoto, Ryan (IT) Batt, Ryan (CENT) Kauahi, Kunani (ISA) Saoit, John Ray (CENT) Brub, Jacob (ISA) Lee, James (ISA) Takano, Rachel (IT) De Sa, Ricardo (IT) Lee, Joe (CENT) Xiao, Zhen Wu (CENT) Hiraoka, Justin (CENT/ISA) Morales, Kyle (CENT) Howze, Janet (ISA) Mori, Kenji (IT) Bachelor of Education (Concentration in Elementary Education) Gallego, Fritzel (ELE) Kinimaka, Shanae (ELE) Mokiao, Charmaine (ELE) Galletes, Moke (ELE) Lagpacan, Jason (ELE) Sahim, Zeena (ELE) Ige, Shane (ELE) Linschoten, Johanna (ELE) Say, Melanie (ELE) He Aloha No Nā ‘Ewa Kawahara, Karen (ELE) Marquez, Joy (ELE) Yoneda, Matthew (ELE) He aloha no nā ‘Ewa. This oli (chant) was composed in honor of the moku (district) of ‘Ewa and each of its ahupua‘a (smaller land divisions). Each verse expresses aloha for the wahi pana (cultural sites) in the ahupua‘a and commemorates the histories and stories found within it. This honoring of wahi pana is interwoven with an overarching theme of seeking and gaining knowledge—knowledge found at the university and knowledge of the ‘āina (land) that forms its foundation. Today we perform only seven verses of the oli, honoring the ahupua‘a that extend between the current and previous locations of the UHWO campus. He aloha no nā ‘Ewa… no Honouliuli, Hō‘ae‘ae, Waikele, Waipi‘o, a me Waiawa. Bachelor of Arts in Humanities By John Kinyon By Dr. Leilani Basham, 2013 Arr.
