These are the key to success in our world today, no less important than they were when the missionaries arrived in 1820. Thus it is fitting that the theme adopted for Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives is as follows: Collaboration between Native Hawaiians and the American Protestant missionaries resulted in, among other things, the introduction of Christianity, the creation of the Hawaiian written language, widespread literacy, the promulgation of the concept of constitutional government, making Western medicine available, and the evolution of a new and distinctive musical tradition. Tonight we honor the ali‘i. Without their support and collaboration, the mission would not have been successful. At each table you will find the story of that chief or chiefess honored by our donors. Our musical tribute – Lani ‘Eha –. honors the four ali‘i composers, Na We are honored by your presence here tonight, and we hope that you will join us in forging modern partnerships as we work to preserve and to interpret this site and these collections and to share these lessons in collaboration with the next generation of Hawai‘i.
