2013 Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader for the
Academic Success Program (ASP)
Job Responsibilities and Qualifications
Description of SI and ASP Programs:
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a voluntary academic assistance program that utilizes peer-led group study
to help students succeed. SI sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, students who have previously completed
the targeted course and have demonstrated competency. The SI Leader facilitates group study strategies and
collaborative study techniques specific to the course. Moreover, the SI Leader is paid to attend the targeted
class, to model successful student behavior, and to design SI sessions based on class lectures.
Each week, SI Leaders offer at least three regularly scheduled SI sessions in designated classrooms. Students
are not required to participate in these sessions, but the SI Leader and course instructor promote the sessions
as ―guaranteed study time‖ during which students can engage with course material. During a typical SI
session, students compare and clarify lecture notes, review textbook readings, and discuss key course
concepts.
During summer 2013, SI Leaders will provide direct support for students in the Academic Success Program
(ASP). This program provides support for conditionally admitted students who must successfully complete a
six-week summer session in order to continue their enrollment for the fall term. ASP provides an opportunity
for incoming students to begin their college experience early and assists them in making a successful
transition to the rigors of college-level work.
SI Leaders will be selected to provide support for one of three liberal studies classes, either ANTH 120
(Comparative Cultural Systems), PSC 150 (American Government and Politics), or SOCW 251 (Social
Issues, Policy and Programs). Leaders will be selected based on the qualifications listed below.
