This causes inflammation and over time deterioration of the joint. Gout or Gouty Arthritis stands alone because it doesn’t fit neatly into either of the other categories. Gout is a condition where uric acid, a byproduct of metabolism, builds up in the system and crystallizes. These crystals are sharp and settle into joints, most notably the large toes and ankles. These uric acid crystals irritate the tissues around the joints where they settle. Each episode causes more damage to the joint. Sharp pain and redness around the joint are common symptoms. ...continued Regardless of the cause, arthritis can be a painful and often debilitating condition. At the same time, many people have arthritis and function quite well and have little pain. There are many variables that affect the way each person reacts to any condition. We can’t cover them all within the confines of this newsletter, but next month we will go over some of the highlights of how to avoid certain kinds of arthritis and what to do if you have it! Dr. Rok A. Morin Splenda: Not so Splendid How many of you use artificial sweeteners? How many of you use natural sweeteners? How many use no sweeteners at all? In the United States it is estimated that the average American consumes 24 pounds of artificial sweeteners per year. Some of this consumption is intentional, but a lot of it is being consumed unknowingly. There are artificial sweeteners in foods such as yogurt, frozen dinners, and even baby foods. Diet sodas are the number one way that artificial sweeteners are consumed. For many, the belief is that there are less calories and it is better for you when you are trying to watch your calories. The truth in fact is that consuming artificial sweeteners actually causes you to gain weight. When we eat artificial sugars our body tries to use the sugar. This causes the pancreas to Page 2 release insulin. Unfortunately, often times those reasons are to avoid something bad like heart disease or obesity. They are literally trying to run away from something they don’t want, instead of running toward something they do want. Why is physical exercise important? Of course there are the cardiovascular, strength, and mobility benefits of exercising, but why is it important? I encourage you to think of your workouts, your exercise, as training. What are you training for? The answer …...life. Engaging in a functional fitness program such as CrossFit is a great way to prepare you for the demands of life. The movements of your activities of daily living - bending, twisting, squatting, lunging, pushing, pulling, running and walking - are integrated into life and form all the components of fitness ( cardiovascular, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy). An important factor in any fitness program is the ability to test yourself to see how your training is benefiting you in the real world outside of the gym. A fun way to do this is obstacle course racing (OCR). OCRs have become very popular in the past few years and chances are you have maybe even participated in Page 3 supports the Navy SEAL Foundation and Spartan Race supports Homes for our Troops. Most races involve a significant quantity of mud. Let your inner child free by crawling through a muddy pit. Nearly all OCRs give back to charities, many of them military and veterans. Wellness News Chiropractic Principle #15: No Motion without the Effort of Force In Principle #15 Dr. Stephenson states a relatively obvious but hard to comprehend fact: “No one has ever seen motion, but everyone has seen matter moving”. In the writing of this principle, Dr. Stephenson states that when we perceive “matter” change location or changing location, we do not perceive motion, we perceive the result of force applied to matter, which we know as motion/movement. “The Major Premise” states that “There is Universal Intelligence in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions”. In all things of matter there is molecular motion. Nothing that is “matter” IS without force/intelligence and you cannot have force/ intelligence without motion (perceivable or not). To be clear, in my opinion what he is saying is; force is in all matter at all times regardless of our awareness. There would be no matter without force/intelligence, as it is the intelligence that organizes and creates the “property” of matter. But whether the object/matter moves perceivably or not, we must know that there is force/intelligence in existence regardless of our perceived awareness of movement, or in our terms, motion. In chiropractic, the 33 Principles define the foundation of the truth that all life and everything that makes up our living experience, perceivable or unperceivable, is the result of the cooperation and expression of (Principle #4: The Triune of Life), Intelligence, Force, and Matter. The goal of Chiropractic in its application is to detect and correct the interference to the result of that Triune. That correction is accomplished through the specific and scientific Chiropractic Adjustment. Going back to early discussions, we know that Principle #1: Dr. Jeffrey S.
