Effective Behavior Intervention Plans: Fostering
Positive Outcomes
8:00 am – 11:15 am
Comprehensive Parent Training and Counseling: The
Home-School Connection
12:10 pm – 3:20 pm
This workshop is designed to review the foundational components of
developing an effective Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) within the school
setting. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how the underlying
functions and the four-term behavioral contingency creates the
foundation of an effective plan. In considering the function-intervention
relationship, specific reinforcement strategies can be designed to build
functionally appropriate responses, which is the essence of the proactive
procedures of a comprehensive plan. The role of precursor
behaviors/situations will also be reviewed. Within the context of the
reactive component of behavior intervention planning, strategies that aim
to decrease the probability of problem behaviors will also be reviewed.
This will include reviewing common pitfalls school staff may encounter and
the importance of avoiding power struggles with students. Case examples
of young and older students will be discussed and reviewed throughout
the presentation in order to emphasize all the components of the
behavioral intervention process. In looking beyond the foundational
components of a BIP, additional strategies will be covered including the
use of visual support strategies, contingency mapping, and cognitiveemotional strategies. The overall structure and outline of a written BIP will
also be reviewed.
This workshop will provide a comprehensive model of parent training that

10:45 Overall Structure of a Written BIP
seeks to combine behavioral analytic strategies with cognitive-based
strategies. A review of some recent parent training research will be briefly
provided, along with key behavioral strategies that can be used with
parents in order to gain positive behavioral momentum. Emphasis will be
placed on the parent trainer’s role in helping parents understand child
development and the level of their child’s needs in order to effectively
identify appropriate goals. In leading up to specific cognitive strategies, this
workshop will explore family dynamics (e.g., family homeostasis) that can
impact the parent training process. Additionally, cognitive factors (e.g.,
automatic negative thoughts) will be outlined within the context of how
such factors can present barriers to progress. Cognitive-based strategies
(e.g., cognitive reframing) will be presented to provide specific approaches
to addressing negative thought processes. Case examples will be provided
to demonstrate how the behavioral and cognitive strategies can be
combined within the context of a comprehensive parent training model.
Learning Objectives – as a result of this activity, participants will be
able to:




