Our Communities
The Honor Code
All Midlands Technical College students subscribe to the following foundational honor code:
As a member of the Midlands Technical College community, I will adhere to the college’s Student Code. I
will act honorably, responsibly, and with academic integrity and honesty. I will be responsible for my
own academic work and will neither give nor receive unauthorized or unacknowledged aid. I will
behave courteously to all members of the MTC community and its guests and will respect college
property and the property of others.
The Carolinian Creed
The community of scholars at the University of South Carolina is dedicated to personal and academic
excellence. Choosing to join the community obligates each member to a code of civilized behavior.
As a Carolinian...
I will practice personal and academic integrity;
I will respect the dignity of all persons;
I will respect the rights and property of others;
I will discourage bigotry, while striving to learn from
differences in people, ideas, and opinions;
I will demonstrate concern for others, their feelings, and their need for conditions
which support their work and development.

Our Program
Mission
Gamecock Gateway provides access to a University of South Carolina degree through highly
collaborative, personalized academic support and purposeful community engagement that contributes
toward student development and matriculation into the University of South Carolina.
Vision
Through academic and engagement opportunities, inter- and intra- campus collaboration, and
effective assessment, programs and services, Gamecock Gateway will increase access to an
undergraduate degree and become a nationally recognized residential bridge program.
Goals
1. Successfully transfer students from Midlands Technical College to the University of South
Carolina in one academic year.
2. Provide academic support that increases the number of students transferring from
Midlands Technical College to the University of South Carolina.
3. Provide meaningful, reflective opportunities that increase the number of students
transferring from Midlands Technical College to the University of South Carolina.
Program Overview and Transfer Requirements
Gamecock Gateway is committed to enhancing access to a USC degree for South Carolina residents.
Established in 2012, Gamecock Gateway is a residential bridge program that furthers the successful
collaboration between the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College. This one year
(Fall 2014-Spring 2015), invitation-only program for first time college students enables students to
complete their first 30 credit hours at Midlands Technical College while living on campus at the
University of South Carolina and engaging in university opportunities. Should students meet the
established requirements for transfer after two semesters (see below), they will be admitted into
USC-Columbia for the next academic year.



To transfer to USC-Columbia, students must:
earn 30 transferrable hours at Midlands Technical College
earn at least a 2.25 GPA within the designated time frame
(some USC academic programs will require a higher GPA for admission—see page 11)
be in good conduct and financial standing at both institutions
For more information, visit www.sa.sc.edu/gateway.

Engagement Restrictions at USC
Gamecock Gateway students have access to a remarkable number of resources and opportunities at
both MTC and USC. Only a few engagement restrictions exist. Gamecock Gateway students are not
eligible to obtain student tickets for USC football, basketball, and baseball games; join social fraternities
or sororities; serve as an officer of record in a USC student organization; participate in intercollegiate
athletics; or participate in an activity that requires USC course enrollment. Students will have access to
these opportunities, however, once they become full time USC-Columbia students.

Communicating with You
The Gamecock Gateway team will primarily contact students via their MTC e-mail accounts. It is the student’s
responsibility to check both MTC and USC e-mail regularly. Beyond e-mail, information will be relayed
through the residential communities and the online resources noted below. Occasionally, students may also
receive mail in their USC post office boxes or via their home addresses from USC, MTC, or Gamecock Gateway.

Our Expectations
Student Conduct
As a student at Midlands Technical College, you are held accountable to the expectations and
information found in the Midlands Technical College Student Handbook. To view the handbook,
please visit http://www.midlandstech.edu/handbook/.
As a student-affiliate and on-campus housing resident at the University of South Carolina, you are held
accountable to the expectations and information found in the University of South Carolina’s Student
Handbook and Policy Guide, the Carolina Community. To view the Carolina Community, please visit
http://www.sa.sc.edu/carolinacommunity/.
To transfer to the University of South Carolina, a Gamecock Gateway student must remain in
good conduct and financial standing at both institutions. For a student to remain in “good
conduct standing,” he/she cannot be on housing or conduct probation at either institution at the
close of the spring 2014 semester.
Incidents that happen on the Midlands Technical College campus are addressed by MTC Student
Conduct. Incidents that happen on the University of South Carolina campus, in a USC residence hall, on
the Gamecock Gateway shuttle, or off campus are addressed by the USC Office of Student Conduct.
While your Gamecock Gateway staff members are not conduct officers, they are made aware of all
incident reports at both institutions, trade the information between both institutions, and are (from
time to time) consulted on Gamecock Gateway-related conduct incidents.
Please note: Students suspended from University of South Carolina housing can/will also be
suspended from Midlands Technical College coursework. On campus residency and enrollment
at Midlands Technical College go hand-in-hand for Gamecock Gateway students.
Also note: USC Student Conduct will communicate with you via your USC e-mail account. It is
your responsibility to read your USC e-mail regularly and to respond to any Student Conduct
requests within 24 hours. While Gateway staff will monitor your compliance with conduct
sanctions, you—the student—are ultimately responsible for successful completion of the
sanction and outreach to Student Conduct with any questions or concerns.
This year is your opportunity to succeed—don’t let any barrier interrupt your success!
Engagement
You are as connected to the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College as you desire.
The purpose of Gamecock Gateway is to provide you with the academic support necessary for success
while also immersing you in the Carolinian community. Don’t waste this year—get involved!
Our Goal...100% transfer to USC!

MTC Academic Policies and Procedures
Academic Integrity
All forms of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating on tests, plagiarism, collusion
and falsification of information, will call for discipline. For more, refer to The MTC Student Handbook.
Attendance
The attendance policy varies from department to department within the college. You should refer to the
syllabus for each course for accurate attendance requirements. Because there are no excused absences,
you should save your absences for unavoidable emergencies or illness so that you do not get removed
from your classes for overcutting. Please remember: if you exceed the number of absences permitted
for the course, the instructor will drop you from the course, negatively impacting your ability to transfer
after one year in Gamecock Gateway.
Disability Services
Students who need accommodations at MTC and USC must consult with MTC Counseling Services.
Counseling Services may be reached at 803-822-3505 or 803-822-3295 (tty). Counseling Services is
located at Airport Student Center Suite 237.
Financial Aid
If you are receiving financial aid, you should monitor your aid closely. If you are receiving the LIFE
Scholarship, you will need to be aware of all the regulations concerning that scholarship. It is your
responsibility to advise the Financial Aid office of any changes that might impact your financial aid, such
as loss of income or a change in the number of hours you are taking or plan to take in a semester.
Foreign Language Placement Tests
Students wishing to take a foreign language course should take the foreign language placement test
(FLPT) at the assessment center. The score on that test will determine appropriate placement and will
remove the registration block for the language courses. FLPT waivers for students who have never
studied the language may be given through an advisor. The FLPT is given in the Student Assessment
office on either Airport Campus (Airport Student Center 262) or Beltline Campus (Wade Martin 249).
Repeat Grades Policy
If you repeat a course, all grades will be entered on your permanent academic record. The higher of the
two grades will be included in the grade point average calculated for MTC.
USC uses all grades, with the exception of developmental course grades, in calculating
your transfer GPA.
If you receive financial aid, remember that all coursework attempted will be calculated for
academic progress standards for financial aid.
Page 8
MTC Academic Policies and Procedures
Credit From Another Institution/AP Credits
Advanced standing cannot be awarded until official transcripts and/or reports have been received by
the MTC Admissions Office and evaluated by the Student Academic Credentialing Office. Proper
advisement can only take place when previous transcripts have been officially evaluated.
Standards for Academic Progress
To remain in good standing with MTC, you must maintain a minimum credit hour Grade Point Average
(GPA) of 2.0. For USC, you must maintain a minimum 2.25 or higher, depending on the required GPA for
your intended major at USC.
If your fall GPA is below 2.25, you will be required to complete additional tasks, such as meeting
regularly with your advisor and attending tutoring, to help you raise your GPA in the spring.
If your fall GPA is between 2.26-2.5, you will be placed on an academic plan to provide (at
minimum) twice-per-semester check ins with a Gateway staff member to monitor your progress.
Dropping a Course
Gamecock Gateway students are not permitted to withdraw from any course without first consulting
with their Gamecock Gateway Advisor as well as the Financial Aid office. If you think you are failing a
class or are too overloaded to complete all of your classes successfully, you should explore withdrawal
as an option first with your instructor and then with your advisor before midterm. If you miss more
classes than allowed, your instructor will withdraw you from the class, negatively impacting your ability
to transfer.
Changing Your Major
While first year students will not select an official college major, Midlands Technical College academic
advisors will work with each student individually to be sure courses selected meet transfer and major
specific requirements. An official major must be declared before the end of the spring semester.
In the initial advising appointment, MTC advisors will ask Gateway students for their anticipated USC
major. As they progress through their coursework, students may determine that a previously selected
major does not match their personal or professional pursuits. To switch your anticipated major, please
visit Susan Vinson or Dusty Etheridge at Midlands Technical College as soon as possible so that any
possible schedule adjustments can be made to ensure full transferability of courses.
Withdrawing from Gamecock Gateway and Midlands Technical College
Should a student decide to withdraw from Gamecock Gateway, the student must first meet with a
Gamecock Gateway staff member. After the meeting, the student must submit the notice in writing to
both Dusty Etheridge (at Midlands Technical College) and Drew Newton (at the University of South Carolina). Dusty, in concert with Susan Vinson, will then take care of withdrawing the student from all
courses and services at Midlands Technical College. Drew, in concert with USC partners, will take care
of withdrawing the student from all access and opportunities at USC, including University Housing.
Students should note that financial consequences may accompany the withdrawal.
(See Refund Policy—page 15)
Page 9
GPA Requirements for Transfer
Gamecock Gateway students will be eligible to attend the University of South Carolina after earning 30
transferable credits at Midlands Technical College and achieving the required GPA for their intended major at
USC. Some majors also require completion of specific courses. Students must have at least a cumulative 2.25
grade point average on a 4.00 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0). Several colleges and programs within the
University, however, require higher grade point averages on all college work attempted:
ATHLETIC TRAINING – Minimum 2.5 GPA
BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY – Requires a 3.2 USC GPA with 30 hours earned to meet initial
progression requirements. Each student who intends to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology must
complete CHEM 111, CHEM 112, BIOL 101, BIOL 102, and MATH 141 (or equivalent AP, IB, or transfer work)
in order to be eligible to progress in the major. A special application may be required for full acceptance into
the program after earning a 3.2 USC GPA and completing the course requirements.
BIOLOGY – Minimum 2.5 GPA
BUSINESS MAJORS – Minimum 3.0 GPA and completion of one semester of calculus equivalent to USC’s MATH
122 (Calculus for Business Administration and Social Sciences) or MATH 141 (Calculus I) with a minimum
grade of “C.”
CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGY – Minimum 2.25 GPA if transferring with fewer than 30 semester hours;
minimum 2.50 GPA with 30-59 semester hours; 2.75 GPA with 60 semester hours or more.
CHEMISTRY – Minimum 2.5 GPA
COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS OR COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJORS – Minimum 2.75 GPA
DANCE – An audition with the Department of Theatre and Dance is required for full admission as a dance major.
ECONOMICS – Minimum 2.5 GPA for the Economics program in the College of Arts and Sciences.
EDUCATION (EARLY CHILDHOOD, ELEMENTARY, OR MIDDLE SCHOOL) – You must have a 2.25 GPA with
less than 30 credit hours; 2.5 GPA with 30 hours or more.
ENGINEERING MAJORS (INCLUDING COMPUTER ENGINEERING) – Minimum 2.75 GPA completion of one semester of calculus equivalent to USC’s MATH 141 (Calculus I) with a minimum grade of “C.” Calculus courses
designed for non-engineering majors do not meet this requirement.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – Minimum 2.8 GPA
EXERCISE SCIENCE – Minimum 2.75 GPA
INFORMATION SCIENCE – Minimum 2.5 GPA
JOURNALISM – Minimum 2.5 GPA
MATHEMATICS – Minimum 2.25 GPA and completion of at least one of the following courses, or their equivalent: USC’s MATH 141, MATH 142, MATH 241, or MATH 300 with a minimum grade of a “B”. An AP or IB exam score that provides credit for MATH 142 also satisfies this requirement.
MUSIC - Students must audition before being accepted to the School of Music. Contact the School of Music for
more information.
NURSING - Minimum 3.0 GPA on all college work (Demand for this program is at an all-time high. All enrolled
USC undergraduates who seek a nursing degree are first admitted into the College of Nursing’s lower division. This does not guarantee later admission into the upper division nursing major. In recent years, upper
division admission has become increasingly competitive, with admitted students routinely posting cumulative GPAs in excess of 3.25.) Students may not have less than a “C” in any science or nursing course. Admission to the program is selective; therefore meeting minimum GPA requirements is not a guarantee of admission to the college.
PHARMACY – Minimum 3.00 GPA
PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Minimum 2.5 GPA
PUBLIC HEALTH – Minimum 2.75 GPA
SPORT AND ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT – Minimum 3.0 GPA
STATISTICS – Minimum 2.25 GPA and completion of at least one of the following courses, or their equivalent:
USC’s MATH 141, MATH 142, STAT 509, or STAT 515 with a minimum grade of a “B”. An AP or IB exam score
that provides credit for MATH 142 also satisfies this requirement.
Page 10
General Transfer Information
General education requirements may vary greatly from major to major at the same college/
university. For example, what is appropriate for a business major might not be appropriate for a
computer science major. If you change your mind about your major at USC while you are at
MTC, you must let your Gamecock Gateway advisor know as soon as possible.
Keep your GPA high! Most four-year colleges and universities do not substitute grades from
repeat courses, so your MTC GPA may not be the same as your Transfer GPA.
Keep good records! This includes any advisement information as well as copies of course work,
such a term papers, art projects, attendance at music and theatre productions or art galleries.
Keep course syllabi. These may be useful to you for meeting certain requirements at your senior
college/university.
Check web-pages frequently. Most colleges and universities prefer that students check their
websites for the most up-to-date information regarding admission requirements, degree
requirements, and transfer equivalencies. Generally, transfer information is found in the
undergraduate admission area of the college’s webpage. You will also find contact information
for admissions/or transfer officers if you need additional information.
Your most reliable source of information is always www.sa.sc.edu/gateway!

The Roost Residence Hall
Bates House Residence Hall
The Roost
Bates House
Your residence hall is your primary link to campus culture and engagement at the University of South Carolina.
In our living and learning community, you will find a solid community where many of the same
individuals you share classes with are right down the hallway from your suite.
In this, your new home, you will create life-long friendships, develop a sense of academic ownership, and
become integrated with your community in greater ways than you may have thought possible!
Here are some tips for success this year in Bates House and The Roost:

Having trouble with your roommate/suitemates? First, take time to politely discuss the concerns
with your roommate/suitemate. If concerns continue, chat with your Resident Mentor.

Need to report a maintenance concern? Posts in the Facebook group aren’t the answer—but
University Housing’s FIXX program can help! Submit your request online at www.housing.sc.edu.

Still no resolution to your maintenance request? See your RM, Joslyn, Cameron, or Duncan.

Be a leader! Take on a leadership role in Hall Government or participate in one of the planning
committee opportunities. We cannot be successful without your investment.

Attend a program (or two...or three)! Your RMs will make available a variety of programs and
events that get you connected with other Gamecock Gateway students, that engage you with USC at
large, and that help you make the most of your transition into college. Attend! They’re awesome!

Just need some advice? That’s why your RM and Housing staff are here. College can be tough.
Your RMs and Housing staff have experienced your concerns before and are an outstanding resource.
Welcome to your home in the Gamecock Nation.
