Content
The syllabus will typically include:
- an introduction to basic principles of good practice in Creative Writing;
- an introduction to a variety of forms of both fiction and non-fiction prose;
- analysis of academic and journalistic writing;
- analysis of fiction and non-fiction prose texts for narrative and rhetorical content and style;
- practice-based seminar sessions including writing exercises and group critique;
- an introduction to the redrafting process and the development of a portfolio of written
work;
- an introduction to self-reflective critical commentary and the development of a body of
critical commentary which reflects upon the creative portfolio.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be expected at threshold
level to:
1.
understand the basic rules of good practice for Creative Writing (i.e.
critical reading, redrafting);
2.
identify a wide variety of forms and styles of prose narration;
3.
demonstrate a greater understanding of both fiction and non-fiction
prose in both the creative and critical aspects of coursework;
4.
demonstrate an understanding of journalistic and academic writing in terms
of style, language and presentation which includes knowledge of how to
reference work;
5.
practice the critique and redrafting process as both writer and critic;
6.
have developed a set of goals for the improvement of their own prose
writing based on both the creative and critical aspects of the portfolio.
