Bldg. Rm 128 WEDNESDAY – 5pm-­‐6pm – Main Campus, Valhalla, Tech. Bldg. Rm 128 Course Description A basic study of animation techniques that explores a variety of multimedia expressions. Though character designs and storyboards, students learn how to modify the dramatic structure of a story to produce a meaningful animation. Students produce a short narrative animation published in an interactive format either for the Internet or DVD. Center for the Arts, Peekskill Extension Center. (3 credits and 4 contact hours weekly) Student Learning Outcomes & Objectives SLO 1: Demonstrate Understanding of the 12 Principles of Animation. Objective 1: Define/explain the 12 Principles of Animation, and how they contribute to the illusion of life. Objective 2: Analyze selected animations, and identify the principles of animation employed SLO 2: Demonstrate Understanding of storyboard language. Objective 1: Design characters that convey unique characteristics that match storyline concept. Objective 2: Create storyboard frames that demonstrate engaging point of views (POV) of characters and scene. SLO 3: Use basic animation software to create an original animation. Objective 1: Create vector or raster designs in PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, or FLASH from storyboard frames. Objective 2: Create an Animatic from storyboard designs. Objective 3: Edit animation using “frame by frame” or “Tweening” techniques to simulate expression and movement. Objective 4: Use animation software to manipulate and animate objects using at least five principles of animation (lip synch, walk cycle, fall, squash, morph). Objective 5: Assemble scenes to match storyboard concept and animatics timing. Objective 6: Import and edit sound efx and music matching to animation actions. SLO 4: Critically analyze and evaluate animations. Objective 1: Present and critically analyze final animation project, using technical vocabulary to explain concept and technical process, and evaluate results SUNY GE Outcomes THE ARTS -­‐ Students will demonstrate understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression and the creative process inherent therein. Grading Evaluation and Assessment Responsible to save all assignments throughout the semester with at least 2 backups (online and USB) If, you lose assignments, you will fail the course. Take time to backup, make copies of important documents online. Required to bring to each class: A NOTEBOOK or SKETCHBOOK that will demonstrate and document your creative progress with assignments: A spiral bounded journal (line or graph preferably) and/or sketchbook. High-­‐quality 13×19 ink-­‐jet paper, for hardcopy print portfolio examples (Staples) Create and manage your personal WordPress blog. Absences and lateness will impact negatively on the final grade. Most in-­‐
class tutorials, assignments and participation are Pass or Fail. If you are going to be late or absent email instructor. It is a professional protocol. Makeup assignments due to absence or lateness will take place during instructor’s office hours. • Weekly Journal Blog Entries (15) 5% • Assignments (12 @5% using a point value system) 60% • Weekly Participation and in-­‐class Tutorials (Pass or Fail) along with at home BLACKBOARD Assignments 15% • Midterm and Final Presentations (Oral and Written) 20% •TOTAL 100% All assignments MUST BE UPLOADED TO STUDENTS PERSONAL BLOG to be evaluated and given credit, there are no exceptions. Students may access weekly assignments through WCC’S BLACKBOARD and from the instructor’s blog. Weekly assignments are allotted to students based on completion of previous assignments. Student Support Services Class Conduct Policy WCC’s goal is to help students become successful, confident, independent learners. Therefore, the ASC provides ongoing tutorial assistance for students. Computer Lab Hours: Technology Building (First Floor Labs are open M-­‐Th 8am-­‐
9pm) Friday and Saturday 8am-­‐5pm) All other Computer Labs are subject to availability. The Instructor will inform you of those days and times for other computer labs on the Valhalla campus. Online Support: There are numerous video tutorials that will help you with assignments using software or finding design solutions. On the instructors blog you will find some of them under RESOURCES. If you are a Westchester County resident you may access LYNDA.COM for “FREE” from your local area public library. Ask the instructor. Instructor Office Hours: Take the time to meet with the instructor to cover assignments or to discuss your academic or career aspirations. 1. Students are expected to arrive on time. If you are unavoidably late and the instructor permits you to enter, please do so quietly and seat yourself quickly. 2. Students are expected to refrain from participating in personal conversations during class. 3. Every student is expected to focus on the class lesson. Please refrain from doing other class work, reading non-­‐course materials, eating, drinking, or sleeping. 4. Students are expected to use appropriate language at all times and be polite to one another. 5. Students are expected to remain seated during class, unless the student has notified the instructor or case of an emergency. 6. Students must turn off all cell phones and beepers prior to the beginning of class. 7. Visitors are only allowed with permission from the instructor. 8. Students are expected to refrain from packing up and preparing to leave until the instructor has dismissed the class. It is the instructor’s responsibility to dismiss the class at the proper time. Instructors Notes Students must have an online cloud account (Apple, Microsoft or Google Docs) to backup files (2 copies). Losing files will result in failing the course. Student’s personal blog and BLACKBOARD account will archive assignments, resources and their progress throughout the semester. The BLACKBOARD shell will present weekly assignments that need to be completed each week on a Pass or Fail basis. At all times students will know their grade and what assignment will follow each week. If absent you can find the missed assignment online, on the instructors blog or BLACKBOARD.
