GRANT ACTIVITY
Current Research Support
R01 MH096478
03/12/2012-12/31/16
Fetal Exposure to Maternal Stress and Inflammation: Effects on Neurodevelopment
Role: Consultant; L. Ellman, PhD (PI); Funded by NIH/NIMH. The project aims to investigate
how maternal stress during pregnancy, maternal inflammation during pregnancy and fetal
hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the fetus) influence the risk of symptoms of depression during
adolescence in offspring. A secondary aim is to map trajectories of how these prenatal risk
factors result in a cascade of events, leading to altered developmental trajectories in emotional,
cognitive, and behavioral outcomes during childhood and subsequent depression during
adolescence. Total Costs: $1,303,318
Pilot Funding
09/01/12-Project Completion
Imaging Genetics of Sensation Seeking
Role: Principal Investigator; Funded by the Intermountain Neuroimaging Consortium, University
of Colorado, Boulder. The study is designed to collect pilot data for a grant application detailed
below under potential research support. The primary goal is to implement study protocols to
collect genetic, fMRI and DTI data from a small sample of participants to show capability to
complete a larger study and provide initial data with which to review study hypotheses. Total
Costs: $3,500.
Pilot Funding
05/01/14-04/30/15
Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy to Assess Sensation Seeking and Impulsivity
Role: Principal Investigator; Funded by Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.
The study is designed to test a novel application of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in
translational research to determine if sensation seeking and cognitive control can be
distinguished from each other at rest and while under task by measuring differential activation of
the specific brain regions of interest. Identifying different regions of activation would allow for
biobehavioral measurement of these constructs in future research. Total Costs: $25,000.
NSF 1348916
07/01/14-06/30/17
Embodied Social Cognition and the Decision to Act
Role: Co-Investigator; Funded by the National Science Foundation. The study will examine
how holding objects with different meanings can change how we perceive the intentions of
others and the moderating effects of individual differences on these perceptions. For example,
do we perceive others differently if we are holding a gun versus holding a ball? This research
will examine the role of individual differences and situation-specific factors that affect the
likelihood that holding a gun will produce false perceptions about the actions of others; for
example, whether they incorrectly believe another person is holding a gun instead of another
object. Total Costs: 300,000.
Conner, Bradley T. 2
Potential Research Support
DP1DA042236
Using Imaging Genetics to Determine Predisposition to Substance Use
Role: Principal Investigator; Agency: NIH/NIDA; The proposed study is designed to examine
mesocorticolimbic dopamine genotypes and pathways for evidence that disrupted functioning is
predictive of higher sensation seeking, impulsivity, and risky behavior using fMRI, DTI, and
fNIRS. Total Costs: $1,500,000.
Completed Research Support
R03 MH080874
09/01/08-08/31/11
Mental Health Characteristics and Service Utilization of Substance Abusing Offenders in California
Role: Consultant, Previously P.I.; Agency: NIH/NIMH; The study concerns secondary data
analysis to determine how individuals with co-occurring disorders perform in California’s
Proposition 36, the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act. I was the grant writer and
original PI of this project; however, I took a position at Temple University and moved to
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Given the proprietary nature of the state-collected data to be
analyzed in this project, I reassigned the role of PI of this project to Christine Grella, Ph.D. who
continues to work at UCLA’s ISAP. Total Costs: $126,000.
R03 DA023131
05/02/08-04/30/11
The Effect of Treatment Motivation on Drug Use Treatment Success
Role: Principal Investigator; Agency: NIH/NIDA; This study is designed to conduct secondary
data analysis on a sample of 465 participants engaged in drug treatment to determine the role of
internal and external motivation on drug treatment success. Total Costs: $137,500.
F32-DA07272
02/01/2008-08/31/2008
The Etiology and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders
Role: Fellow; R. Rawson PhD (PI); Agency: NIH/NIDA; This was part of a T32 Institutional
Training Grant located at ISAP. The training grant offers a multidisciplinary training program to
understand drug abuse etiology, behavior, consequences, and treatment. Substantive topics range
from psychopharmacology to the social consequences of drug legislation. Total Costs: $74,829.
F31-DA014440
05/05/2002-05/04/2005
Factors Leading to Development of Risk Taking Behavior
Role: Fellow and Principal Investigator; Agency: NIH/NIDA; The primary aim of this project
was to 1) develop a new scale to measure sensation seeking, 2) provide support for a link
between hypodopaminergic genotypes and sensation seeking, and 3) determine if trait anxiety
moderates the relationship between sensation seeking and engagement in risky behavior. Total
Costs: $41,796.
Other Competitive Funding
Recipient National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program
October 2009- Present
A competitive student loan repayment program with an award in the amount of $50,223.20.
