Flight Paramedic
Manitoba Health Emergency Medical Services Branch invites interested, qualified individuals to submit
an application to work on a contract, term basis as a Flight Paramedic on a six month pilot. This project
is a unique opportunity to become involved in another aspect of Manitoba EMS and expand your
knowledge and experience base in the EMS system.
It is anticipated that the project will employ 5 positions & an alternate.
Program Description:
The Southern Air Ambulance Pilot Project is a time limited evaluation project to determine if air
transport of stable inter-facility patients can be effectively coordinated for patients whose land
ambulance transport times would exceed 2.5 hrs (one way).
The objectives of the program are:






to evaluate the benefits of air transports for patients in increased comfort and reduced risk due
to long transport
to evaluate the potential enhancements to safety for paramedics due to reduced reliance on
extended shifts
to evaluate the ability of the MTCC to effectively coordinate the use of the aircraft to minimize
empty legs, and to maximize the use of multi-patient transports
to evaluate the financial implications including the costs of the air transports, reducing
kilometres on the ambulance fleet, and reducing the need for nursing or other medical escorts.
to evaluate any other unanticipated benefits or negative events associated with air transport
to evaluate other unanticipated opportunities
Job Description:
Reporting to the Chief Flight Nurse of the Manitoba LifeFlight program, the flight paramedic will be
responsible to provide care to Manitoba patients beginning at the time care of the patient is transferred
to them at a health care facility or from an EMS crew at a rural airport, continuing through the transport
of the patient by air, and through the transfer of care of that patient to another ambulance crew or the
appropriate health care facility.
Although primarily being assigned to deal with stable patients, flight paramedics are expected to be
capable of providing care for any unexpected emergency encountered during the duration of the flight
and associated land transport.
From time to time, weather conditions or mechanical issues may prevent the aircraft from being
dispatched as planned. Under these conditions, staff assigned to the pilot project may be required to
assist the EMS system by being dispatched to transport rural patients already in Winnipeg, back to their
appropriate health facility by land ambulance to avoid the need to send rural ambulances into
Winnipeg.
Position Requirements:
The paramedic candidate for the Pilot project should have the following:





Minimum 3 years EMS experience
Primary Care Paramedic Certification
Strong inter-personal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication
Hold TOFs in the following areas:

o ACLS certification

o Pain management (morphine/etc)
The flight paramedic will be expected to participate in a variety of processes to evaluate the
effectiveness of the program, including interviewing of patients and others regarding the flight
experience, medical documentation, participation in surveys and other activities.
