Winona
Welcomes You
Congratulations - you have found it: the
Midwest’s most beloved and best kept
secret. From its sculpted bluffs to its mighty
river and all the places in between, Winona
has unparalleled beauty mixed with a cool
urbanity and old-world charm that proves
that yes, you really can have it all in one
enchanting place.
The gilded era of lumber barons and paddlewheelers is immortalized here in the lavish
architecture that has become a hallmark
of this picturesque river hamlet. Elaborate
cornices, grand buildings, and vibrant stained
glass beckon for a stroll through the historic
downtown today just as they did a century
ago, and all who pass this way agree that
Winona is truly a beautiful place.
For outdoor lovers, whatever your version of
relaxing is - whether it is swinging on a bench
by the lake or tackling a wicked mountain
bike trail, whether it is a tranquil hike in the
woods or whirlybirds on a wake board Winona is a paradise.

Winona Top Voted “Most Beautiful Place in Minnesota”
– Rand McNally, Route 66 Best of the Road competition,
October 2013
“Part of the fun of a day trip is the journey there and back,
and if you take Hwy. 61 south of the Twin Cities, you can hug
the Mississippi River on your way to the state’s corner and
the Winona area. What do you have when you get there? A
beautiful old Main Street, plenty of intriguing places to visit, and
an overall charm that permeates the city & surrounding area.”
– City Pages, “Best Day Trip 2013,” March 2013
“But this outstanding art museum at 800 Riverview Drive
isn’t the only reason to visit Winona…Winona also has other
cultural attractions, including many examples of outstanding
19th-century architecture, plus festivals and outdoor activities
focused on the river and surrounding countryside.”
– Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “High Points of River City
Winona,” March 1, 2013
“Whether you’re into paddling or Picasso, Beethoven or
bluegrass, history or hiking, Winona is the perfect blend of
natural beauty, vibrant arts, and Old-World charm.”
– Minnesota Monthly, “Stay & Play: Top 20 Things to Do and
See this Summer,” June 2013
“In the 1850s, a bustling steamboat landing and logging
town was tucked into the foot of the bluffs, supplying
timber for the sprouting town of Winona. Today, the bluffs
make great spots for viewing fall’s colors…This is the
home of peace, wind and hawks.”
– Star Tribune, “Weekend away at Winona’s John A. Latsch
State Park,” October 12, 2013
“Then cross the street to the endless park shouldering the
city’s other watery idol, Lake Winona. Rock in the romantic
swings for two, catch a free concert at the bandshell, or
head to the lodge for free rental of canoes and bikes, or in
wintertime, cross-country skis and skates. Or stroll the levee,
counting soaring eagles and low-slung barges muscling
down the river before it’s time to hit the highway once again.”
– Lavender Magazine, “Queen of the River,” April 4, 2013

Chart your
Journey
Don’t know where to begin?
Check out our sample itineraries here, or click on VisitWinona.com to view themed itineraries,
geared toward the outdoor enthusiast, arts lover, and more.
1/2 DAY:
FULL DAY:
Stop into Bloedow Bakery—”Top 50 Best Donut Shops
in the United States” by Saveur Magazine, March
2013—to sample their famous maple long johns or
more than a dozen other varieties of baked goods, all
made from the original recipes since 1924.
Stroll through downtown Winona with more than
100 National Register historic sites, specialty and
antique shops, restaurants and more.
Begin your journey with a drive to Garvin Heights
Overlook where you can take in a spectacular view:
the winding Mississippi River, trails, and lakes
surrounding the entire city of Winona.
Next, head to the Winona County History Center located
in Winona’s downtown to learn more about what put
Winona on the map: from our booming lumber industry
in the 1800s to our connections with Fastenal, Watkins
and Wincraft.
Finally, take a spin around Winona’s East Lake in a
canoe or kayak, available for a minimal fee to rent
through the city’s Park and Recreation Department.
10 | www.visitwinona.com
If you have an entire day to spend in the city,
start at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum which
boasts an impressive collection of water-inspired
paintings, sculptures and more. Monet, Picasso,
Renoir and Van Gogh can all be seen right here in
Winona.
Stop into one of a half dozen coffeehouses in
the downtown area to treat yourself to a frothy
caffeinated beverage or a fresh deli sandwich.
Local ingredients are celebrated here.
Remember “The Watkins Man?” See history and
product displays of one of the country’s oldest
direct selling companies at the Watkins Heritage
Museum. Free admission allows visitors to peruse
a timeline of the J. R. Watkins Naturals Company
and even purchase current Watkins products.
Weekend:
Day 1
Begin your weekend excursion by hopping on
the Trester Trolley and taking a guided tour of
the city of Winona in a beautifully restored trolley
car. Clarence packs his tours with Winona’s rich
history, and some facts residents may not even
know.
Ready for an experience of a lifetime?! Contact
Winona’s Outdoor Education & Recreation Center
located on the Winona State University campus.
Guides will lead you through the backwaters of the
Mississippi in kayaks or rock climbing up Sugar
Loaf in the summer, or snowshoeing through the
bluff side in the winter.
Garvin Heights Vineyards is the perfect place
to try more than a dozen wines produced right
here in Winona using Minnesota grapes. Their
deck offers a 7-mile view, allowing you to unwind
and relax with a bottle of wine and some cheese
and crackers.
Day 2
Start your morning with a visit to Windom Park
just off Huff Street. The fountain has a bronze
statue of Princess Wenonah, for which the city
is named, surrounded by historic, Victorian-era
homes will captivate you.
Stop in at Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka—one
of only two basilicas in Minnesota and 70th in
the United States—and see why the church is
such a prominent fixture in the city’s skyline.
Ornate domes are adorned with beautiful stained
glass windows dedicated to various saints with
inscriptions in Polish.
Continue your journey of Winona’s Polish
ancestry at the Polish Cultural Institute &
Museum along Second Street.
Visit Lake Park and walk along the paths, stroll
the Rose Garden and take in the view of the
historic Band Shell where concerts are still held
in the summertime. Veterans’ Park also offers
remembrance to those who have fought for
our country.
Top off your stay with a night on the town. Dine at
one of our many local eateries, offering a variety
of fare from fresh, gourmet burgers to decadent
local duck confit. Next, take in an evening
performance during the festival season or at
Winona’s college campuses. A night cap can be
found at an abundance of pubs or watering holes
in the city.
Sugar Loaf Bluff.
Reaching nearly 85 feet into the sky, Sugar
Loaf is a storied symbol of Winona and known
by all as its most distinguishing landmark. The
result of quarrying in the late 1800’s, the bluff
is synonymous with an old Native American
legend that paints the rock as the cap of Dakota
Chief Wapasha. Hiking trails along its back side
offer adventure seekers a unique vantage point
to see the city. Corner of Highway 61 & 43.

Downtown Winona hosts the largest collection of
Victorian commercial architecture in Minnesota
outside St. Paul, and also boasts grand examples
of Richardsonian Romanesque, Prairie School and
Egyptian Revival architecture.
Not only are the buildings picturesque but the
stores hold unique treasures that can only be found
here. Winona’s store owners are proud of the
community and will delight in filling guests in on
the next stop of their journey.
Take a swing through downtown Winona and soak
up our history, as well as our current local charm.
