Rough Draft: Comparison
Sometimes it is helpful to present information by comparing it to something similar or
different; comparison writing can help the reader better understand the topic. In this
paragraph, you’ll compare the United States to ancient Sumer.
1. Write a topic sentence comparing Sumerian civilization to the modern day
United States. Use one of the words below in your topic sentence:

2. Write a comparison between four characteristics of civilization. Include
details in your comparison, and try to combine your ideas into one sentence

3. Write a conclusion sentence to restate your main idea.

1. In a red colored pencil, trace over each capitalized letter (beginning of
sentences, names of places, etc.).
2. In a green colored pencil, underline any transition words you used.
3. Check your spelling and circle any words you need to double-check.
Consult a dictionary or friend and revise the spelling if necessary.
Final draft:
Write a final draft on lined paper, along with a title and your full header. Your
final draft will be copied directly from this rough draft.
Once complete, cut out the final paragraph and glue it to the back of your
spoke diagram with a glue stick.
