 ______________________________ IN THE TELLING OVERVIEW
IN THE TELLING combines documentary style film production and an innovative media delivery application, to enable more distinctive online and blended, courses & programs. We help educators transform their traditional lectures into cinematic “Documentary Instruction” productions that bring video and non-‐video content together in a uniquely rich and engaging way. • Produced Instructional Episodes contain a rich mixture of video, animation, graphics and sound. •
Our modern media platform, TELLING STORY, organizes and presents supporting images, media, and deep-‐dive resources in context with the video episodes. •
Alternate screen layouts and full transcript support user preferences and accessibility needs. •
TELLING STORY integrates with any LMS and responsive design ensures access anywhere, on the user’s device of choice IN THE TELLING (ITT) is enabling the delivery of engaging instruction that bridges the digital gap with today’s student. We help our top tier partner schools realize rapid ROI, drive improved outcomes, create competitive advantage, and increase student & faculty satisfaction. Page 1 of 6 TELLING SERVICES Documentary Instruction Course Production ITT’s Creative Services team works with faculty and distance education professionals to produce cinematic instructional episodes that leverage visual narrative and storytelling to engage the learner. Our methodology encourages instructors to streamline presentations, focusing on key concepts. Supporting “transmedia” content is woven in to add depth and prompt student exploration. Learners tend to lose focus when watching long “lecture-‐capture” style video, so we strive to design an experience that promotes active engagement. Instructional Video Production – ITT provides a comprehensive package of production services: Pre-‐production orientation, consulting and templates, to help instructors condense content into script outlines and prepare for filming. Our multi-‐camera production crew handles location set-‐up and films the instructor (and sometimes students and other SMEs) in a variety of settings. In Post-‐production, we add animations to help visualize concepts, and video editors professionally finish the film. The end result is a series of rich episodes that have the feel of a documentary production. Transmedia Curation, Transcription and Course Packaging – During the production process, ITT helps the instructor/instructional designer curate and organize supporting “transmedia” content that will augment the video. These items can include: images, articles, white papers, case studies, websites, slides, spreadsheets, assignments, simulations, other media, and more. ITT transcribes the video episode and synchronizes the supporting content at points of relevance, in the TELLING STORY platform (see next section for more detail on our platform). “Every professor feels self-conscious about
being filmed. You guys took the heat
completely off me.”

TELLING STORY PLATFORM
The produced episodes are delivered using TELLING STORY, a sophisticated media delivery platform that packages and presents a rich selection of supporting content with video instruction. The video provides the narrative backbone, with transcript and relevant supplemental materials continuously cued up for students to add depth. TELLING STORY uniquely delivers a variety of content elements in a choreographed way, utilizing the entire browser as a learning canvas. Page 2 of 6 TELLING STORY integrates with most Learning Management Systems and is responsively designed for mobile access. We typically integrate with a school’s existing LMS, and the TELLING instructional episodes appear as discrete content elements in the course. Courses are divided into major topic areas (“sessions” or “modules”), each consisting of a series of shorter episodes. When a student selects an episode, the player populates the LMS frame. Students wishing a full screen experience can launch into a new window. Our approach enables upgraded course instruction, while maintaining the administrative capabilities of the existing learning system. TELLING STORY integrated with Canvas LMS When launching an episode, “Discover” is the default layout, offering a choreographed presentation where video is supported by images, slides, and other media animated on the browser surface. Deep dive content links appear in context, offering immediate access to relevant articles, websites, documents, and other synchronized course materials. Learners can choose from two additional views to tailor their experience. “Watch”, focuses on the video with an option to turn the transcript on/off via the “CC” button. In “Review”, the full transcript and all supporting content for the full episode is exposed; this option is useful for review, study or exploration. In any view, Scene Navigation and Search make it easy to locate specific segments or content items. Layout views are customizable to achieve college specific identity and branding. Discover, Watch and Review Page 3 of 6 TELLING STORY is LTI compliant, and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the technologies our partners already use. An open and flexible architecture federates not only into LMS & MOOC platforms, but also website, portal and blog environments like WordPress, and industry-‐standard social learning applications like Google +, Google Docs, Evernote, Twitter, Facebook, etc. By leveraging the open standard for single sign on (OAuth 2.0), TELLING STORY, avoids the inevitable buyer’s remorse that comes from adopting platforms promising social learning but forcing users into closed, proprietary systems. An extensible API library further broadens the potential for deeper integrations with other web-‐service providers, making TELLING STORY a future-‐proof solution in the rapidly evolving online learning market. TAILORED ENGAGEMENT MODEL
ITT uses a Software as a Service model, with tailored solutions to support the roll out of premium quality online, or hybrid programs, courses or courseware. Our structure bundles the appropriate combination of production, software, and support services, with a defined and predictable payment schedule. Due to the large variance in production and deployment scenarios, a needs-‐analysis process allows us to create a solution proposal tailored to the situation, needs, goals and budget for a particular project, course, or program. Pricing is based upon: the amount of content to be produced; production level; projected user volume; video hosting/streaming requirements; Integration needs; content refresh requirements; etc. TELLING Program Solutions While ITT supports a variety of deployment cases, our approach can be especially impactful when applied as part of a program initiative. Launching an online or hybrid program using our solution to deliver core instruction ensures all faculty have robust support to produce premium courses, and students benefit from a consistently rich experience from course-‐to-‐course. Approaching an initiative programmatically offers unique opportunities for brand enhancement, to create a learning community, and to realize financial economies of scale. A school can increase ROI by utilizing video captured during program creation to develop derivative works, such as, enrollment marketing trailers and student orientation videos. Instructional episodes produced for an online program, provide a library of reusable assets that can be leveraged to enable blended or flipped instructional models to enhance on-‐campus courses. For a new program initiative, ITT will design a phased development schedule, tailored to your curriculum model. We offer alternative partnership models, such as TELLING Program Financing, an approach where all development, license/usage, and supporting services are bundled into a subscription fee, and spread across the agreement term (typically 3 years). TELLING Program Financing enables premium quality programs to be launched without the large upfront, out of pocket expense, allowing more agile response to market demand and rapid positive returns for the College. The George Washington University ITT has produced the GW School of Business’ (GWSB) online MBA and MS in Information Systems Technology Management programs. GWSB is a Pearson partner -‐ IN THE TELLING produces the instruction and delivers it via TELLING STORY, integrated in the Blackboard LMS. Pearson provides project management, instructional design and access to supplemental content resources. To date, we have produced & launched over 30 online courses across the two programs. ITT also produces faculty bio movies for each course and has created a series of enrollment marketing trailers, leveraging the footage captured on campus. In early 2014, ITT was engaged by Pearson and GWU to produce a Documentary Instruction MOOC, “The Federal Reserve: Past, Present and Future”, narrated by Frank Sesno, former CNN correspondent and Director of the Media and Public Affairs School. The course, currently in production, features notable experts, including former Fed chairmen Ben Bernanke, Paul Volker and Alan Greenspan. Columbia University Columbia University -‐ School of Continuing Education, has created online courses with ITT’s support. Columbia utilizes local media development staff to capture the raw video. ITT’s Creative Services team then edit and enhance the film by adding original animation and graphic elements. We transcribe the video, package the instructional episodes, and synchronize the supporting content in TELLING STORY, which is integrated with the Canvas LMS. ITT is now working with Columbia Business School (CBS), to film and produce a series of “block week” courses featuring notable faculty experts, including Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. These five-‐day, live events were filmed by ITT and are being produced into six week, Executive Education courses that will be used for online, blended and flipped delivery. ITT is also working with CBS on a prototype “CaseWorks” product, where we are producing one of their business cases into a Documentary Instruction styled module, expected to be the first in a series of published offerings. University of Southern California ITT was selected to produce and deliver the “Connecting With USC Scholars” project. This initiative, funded by the USC Provost’s office, is intended to promote the university by featuring a selection of renowned faculty Page 5 of 6 through a series of open micro-‐lessons, highlighting their innovative work. Featured scholars include top academics and researchers from USC colleges like the Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism; the Keck School of Medicine; the Marshall School of Business; and, the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. ITT provided a comprehensive bundle of creative production services to work with nine separate faculty, creating a brief bio movie and “micro-‐lesson” for each. For delivery, ITT integrated our TELLING STORY player into a USC WordPress website, dedicated to the initiative. Since the initiative has a badging component, we also worked to integrate with USC’s Credly badging system and provided login options via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. IN THE TELLING ADVANTAGES
