During the February Ice Storm event, hospitals in Marion County reported receiving calls from local residents who wanted to come to the hospital in the event of a home power loss since they knew (expected) hospitals to have emergency power, food and other necessities. Valuable lessons for preparing to be a “center of hope,” and for working in an austere environment, can still be learned from the experiences of our medical colleagues in Japan, such as elucidated here: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T110327002681.htm ACTION STEPS Are you prepared to become a “center of hope?” [1] Discuss how you would respond to members of the public seeking shelter in your facility. [2] Discuss infection control procedures that would be implemented for those sheltering. [3] Consult with your security staff to discuss what potential safety and security issues could arise when providing sheltering.
