high) UV Index – 8 (very high) Radiation Level -­‐ Beta Gross Count Rate (CPM): 51 (within normal range) NATIONAL TERRORISM ADVISORY SYSTEM -­‐ No Active Alerts THREAT ANALYSIS Hospitals are refuges in disasters, both for those needing treatment for medical needs, and for those who are simply seeking a safe and caring environment. During the February Ice Storm event, hospitals in Marion County reported receiving calls from local residents who wanted to come to the hospital in the event of a home power loss since they knew (expected) hospitals to have emergency power, food and other necessities. Valuable lessons for preparing to be a “center of hope,” and for working in an austere environment, can still be learned from the experiences of our medical colleagues in Japan, such as elucidated here: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T110327002681.htm ACTION STEPS Are you prepared to become a “center of hope?” [1] Discuss how you would respond to members of the public seeking shelter in your facility. [2] Discuss infection control procedures that would be implemented for those sheltering. [3] Consult with your security staff to discuss what potential safety and security issues could arise when providing sheltering.
