A Collaborative and Innovative Learning Community • School Improvement. Mattawan Consolidated School !• ! ! has a process that assures effective planning and implementation. Mission statements have been developed through the work of the individual building teams and the district team consisting of parents, teachers, students, support staff, administrators and school board members. Building teams work on curriculum and desired outcomes of student learning. The goal is to provide programs that are responsive to student needs based on considerations of parents, students and school employees.! !• Communication. Parents and school personnel working together make a significant difference in the life of a child. We believe in communicating often to assure optimum success of students. We encourage and request the same from parents.! !• • Infinite Campus, available on our website at www.mattawanschools.org, is a valuable tool that allows parents of middle and high school students to obtain information regarding their student’s classroom activities, homework assignments and current academic progress.! !• • The MCS Link Newsletter, published four times each school year, provides information about school activities. It is available on our website at www.mattawanschools.org and also sent by U.S. mail !1 to all district residents. In addition to the district-wide newsletter, weekly and monthly building publications are sent to parents and may also be accessed on our district website.! Parent Associations. The Parent Associations at each of our buildings provide assistance, as well as funds, for student academic enrichment such as field trips, Science Alive and outside speakers.! Mattawan Public Education Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a vehicle for special support of students and school programs through revenues from private industry, endowments and personal gifts. The Foundation is a viable and effective support group of our educational community.! Facility Improvements. In November 2014, the voters approved a 78.6 million bond. The District will build two new elementary buildings scheduled to open in 2017 & 2018. In addition, STEM classrooms will be added to the Middle School and High School. The focus of our instructional program is to assure that students are “comfortably challenged”. A wide variety of instructional techniques are used to meet this goal.! The Middle School offers age-appropriate activities in interscholastic basketball, track, football, cheer squad, volleyball and wrestling. A ski club is organized during the winter months.! Students’ academic, emotional and social needs are carefully considered in designing an instructional program for individual students. We consider natural ability, motivation, confidence and degree of independence. Providing inspiring opportunities for advanced/accelerated and all learners is a priority.! High School students may participate in band, choir, athletics, forensics, ski club and many other activities. Our outstanding band program consistently receives Division One ratings in both marching and concert activities. The band performs at Disney World every four years and has competed in other national and international concert competitions. The equally outstanding vocal music department produces a major musical each spring. There are four high school ensembles, with the top two audition only groups traveling to New York and Chicago each year. A major drama production occurs each fall. Mattawan athletic teams are very competitive in the highly respected Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference. All cocurricular activities are offered based on goals compatible with the regular curricular program.! ! ! ! • Specialized Schools and Programs. In addition to our regular kindergarten through twelfth grade program, Mattawan Consolidated School provides special education services and other alternate placements. Mattawan Consolidated School students may be provided the following options: Van Buren County Learning Center, Van Buren Center Base Program, Van Buren Vocational-Technical Center, Academicaly Talented Youth Program (ATYP) and alternative education programs in adjoining school districts.! ! ! The Director of Student Activities coordinates a comprehensive program offering activities beyond the fine arts and athletics from chess to skateboarding.! • Special Programs. Programs for Gifted Students include: Academically Talented Youth Program (ATYP), dual enrollment through colleges, accommodation for gifted students at each grade level, Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, Tri-County Math Meet, American Junior High Math Competition, Tri-County Girls’ Math Meet, Young Authors, Challenger Program, President’s Awards Program, Continental Math League, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, News Bowl, Michigan Math League, Model United Nations and Chess Club.! ! • Student Achievement. The typical Mattawan student is a high achiever. ACT testing of our students averages 22, verbal SAT scores range from 480 to 680, with SAT math scores ranging from 500 to 760. Mattawan’s Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) scores are regularly some of the highest in all of southwestern Michigan. Our Early Elementary and Later Elementary Schools have each received the status of “Reward” School, which ranks them in the top 10% of the State of Michigan.! ! ! • Co-curricular Activities. Many experiences are available to Mattawan students beyond the regular school day. The school district provides space for Brownies, Cub Scouts and other activities for elementary children. ! Selected high school students routinely receive recognition as National Merit Scholars and also earn other prestigious awards. ! The Early Elementary houses kindergarten through second grades; the Later Elementary houses third through fifth grades; the Middle School houses sixth through eighth grades and the High School houses ninth through twelfth grades. Facilities include an eighth mile indoor track, twelve tennis courts and ample outdoor facilities for many activities.
