Contrast this picture to the one on the facing page from the HERO HD-SDI. The car number plates are clearly
recognisable and so are the man’s facial features.
On a DVR that records in CIF quality, the image above would be effectively scaled to fit the screen and would
be blurred and “blocky” the number plates would be harder to read and the man would be less recognisable.
(See page 10 for an example)
To do this comparison of CIF to HD-SDI, each image has been scaled so that they are in proportion to the pixels
that they are recorded at.
The CIF image size is around 20x less than the HD-SDI format and you could fit around 20 CIF images in to the
HD-SDI one.

The HERO-HD records in the same resolution that you would receive from HD-TV at home, this is 1920x1080 pixels.
So if it was displayed on a large monitor you get that sharp clarity and superb detail you require.
The image on the left is a comparison of what a standard CIF image would look like from a standard DVR
at 352 x 288 pixels.
To do this comparison of CIF to HD-SDI, each image has been scaled so that they are in proportion to
the pixels that they record at. So what you can recognise in one image and not the other is the “real world”
difference of a CIF DVR to that of the new HERO HD-SDI DVR.

Ask the expert about HD-SDI...
There’s no question that growing popularity of HD TV and SKY HD
equipment within the general population has increased consumer
expectations. What they see on TV they expect to see the same
quality or better on their CCTV footage. I’ve created an outline
below of some of the key facts about HD as a basic introduction for
beginners and a handy referral to those already involved.
...What is HD-SDI CCTV?
HD-SDI stands for High Definition Serial Digital Interface, but most
people call it by the abbreviation HD-SDI. In essence the main
advantage over traditional analogue CCTV systems is HD-SDI sends
video in a digital uncompressed format to deliver staggering picture
quality. Compared with a CIF recorder, our HERO HD DVR will
record 20X the image quality !! (See our resolution chart on pg 9)

The extra detail you can see on the video from an HD-SDI camera
can often lead to a criminal conviction whereas the analogue camera
would have not captured sufficient detail to convict.
Since many CCTV installations already have existing co-ax cable
installed, the upgrade path to High Definition CCTV will be less
expensive by utilising HD-SDI technology rather than IP. Plus there
are other benefits including little set up or IT knowledge is required,
basically it’s easy to fit!
You don’t need to upgrade every CCTV camera to HD-SDI at once
on a site. By say upgrading 4 key areas like entrances, exits and
tills with an HD-SDI DVR and four cameras you add massive value
to a CCTV installation without changing it all. However please be
aware because HD-SDI is a digital solution and traditional CCTV is
analogue, you can not mix the two technologies. For example, an
HD-SDI camera will not work on an existing analogue DVR and an
HD-SDI DVR will not work with a traditional analogue CCTV camera.

Why use HD-SDI CCTV?
Aside from the obvious advantage of broadcast quality images to help with clearer
identification on recorded CCTV footage, HD-SDI also has a number of advantages
over IP alternatives.

HD-SDI works with standard RG59 co-ax cable allowing an easy upgrade path for
installers to replace analogue CCTV equipment without re-cabling a premises or
modifying the customer’s network configuration.
Using RG59 cabling means that an HD-SDI CCTV system isn’t reliant on the restrictions
presented trying to transmit CCTV images over a network. It is a robust standalone
solution that doesn’t suffer from network interruptions caused by bandwidth issues
or latency in processing signals and data. This means smoother images with no
unexpected lapses in recording.
HD-SDI is also a global standard whereas IP standards and solutions do vary across
the market. Although “ONVIF” (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is trying to set
IP standards in reality many IP CCTV products in the real world fail to work with each
other correctly, where as HD-SDI has far few issues. (see pg 6­­­­­ for other benefits).
What is the future for HD-SDI?

Further exciting developments in HD CCTV are currently taking place which will
see even more benefits for embracing this technology, these include sending the
signal further without the use of repeaters (200mtr plus), down CAT5/6 cable and
bi-directional communication. HD-SDI will really give IP CCTV a good run for
its money over the next few years when you consider its practical advantages for
system upgrades.
In conclusion...
HD-SDI is an opportunity for users of CCTV equipment to get huge benefits in system
performance.

...4 things to consider for HD-SDI
1. Go LARGE!
2. 100m Rule
HD-SDI Cameras produce a high
resolution digital video signal that’s not compressed so it
needs larger storage requirements than analogue CCTV to
record data for the same period of time as a conventional
analogue DVR.
The maximum recommended cable run is 100m with
HD-SDI and most HD-SDI CCTV systems will simply
not function on runs above 150m without repeaters
being installed, so design your system around this. 3. Quality is king

Cable quality and installation care is

You can’t fit an HD-SDI camera on an old analogue DVR
Traditional analogue camera systems are forgiving when it
comes to bad quality cabling or cable but HD-SDI systems
are less forgiving due to the size of the digital data flowing
down the cable so it’s really important not use “budget
cable” with HD-SDI. All System Q Ltd “AntiHum” branded
CCTV cable is guaranteed great performance up to 100m
with our HD-SDI cameras and DVRs.

...Understanding CCTV Resolutions
CCTV equipment resolutions are often a bit mystifying but in essence all the different resolution means is how
many pixels are used to make up the picture. The more pixels (small squares of colour) you have the more
detail you can display!
Most cheap analogue DVRs offer CIF recording, and the more expensive offer 4CIF. The alienHero HD DVR
offers a staggering 1920 x 1080 pixel recording and live display. If you look at the diagram below you can
see that it provides 20x more image quality than a cheap analogue DVR!

Duplicate Drive Recording
alienMax HD has a “Duplicate” drive recording
facility, where the DVR can be managed to make 2 drives
record the same images, thus creating a back up within
the DVR itself in case of a hard drive error.
File Lock
If an immediate copy of evidence cannot be made, the
DVR has a “File Lock” facility to prevent a recorded file
from being overwritten completely. This can be
unlocked once it is certain that a copy has been made.
Timed Relays To Control Remotely
As well as 4 standard relays, CCTVwindows software
uses RS485 to control Kontrol & Kommand modules for an
additional 8 timed relays on each. Great for controlling
gates, lights even central heating systems remotely. Up to
31 modules with 8 relays each can be configured. More

Email Notification of an Alarm Event
Be alerted of a visitor or an intruder at home when you’re
at work, from your business when you’re not there or
wherever you are in the world! The DVR sends an email
with 3 JPEG attachments showing the “activated” CCTV
camera image taken before, during and just after the
alarm event occurs.
Instant Detective Video Analytics
Instant Detective is a great feature for recordings
captured in busy public spaces such as stations or airports
as it can be used to limit the time spent by an operator or
the police reviewing hours of recorded footage.

The alienPAD is a plug & play keypad to control alienDVRs and
a wide range of PTZ cameras.
Allowing the alienDVR to be securely stored away in a locked room or KitVault DVR enclosure, the alienPAD
allows the operator to control both alienDVRs and PTZ cameras without accessing the DVR itself or using the
CCTVwindow client software.
Up to 31 alienDVRs and 255 PTZ cameras can be controlled from just the
1 alienPAD. Its layout is set out intuitively to allow the operator to use the
joystick to easily manoeuvre PTZ cameras around and zoom in and out
with just one hand. This leaves the other hand free to select cameras, call
presets and even switch to a different alienDVR.
For large scale installations in hospitals or town centres, up to 15 of the
alienPADs can be used on one system. They are hardwired with standard
CAT5 or similar twisted pair cable and can be used up to 1200 metres
from the alienDVR itself.
The alienPAD is compatible with 9 PTZ protocols including Pelco-D and
Pelco-P and baud rate speeds from 1200 to 19200 bps as well as the

The Kontrol & Kommand module allows remote control of third party electrical
equipment/systems via the alienDVR and CCTVWindow software.
How it works - The CCTVWindow software sends “Kontrol” signals to the DVR that then forwards them on to
a Kontrol & Kommand module. Each K&K has 8 separate relays that the software can control. The relays can be
made to open or close for adjustable lengths of time, all programmable by the user.
For example, you can send a signal via the CCTVWindow software to
the DVR to open a relay for 2 minutes, you may use this to open a gate
for a visitor. Or you may send a signal to another relay close for 3 hours
which overrides a central heating controller. You might even trigger a
third relay to open for 9 minutes to trigger a siren because you have
spotted intruders.
You can name each function and button in the software so that once
it’s set up and configured it’s really easy to use.
The big benefit of the Kontrol & Kommand unit over the DVR’s own relays
is the ability to control the time each relay is open or closed for. You can
even assign “groups” to the relays. Up to 31 K&Ks can be connected to
each DVR allowing for great flexibility on installations in large buildings.
