PRESS, PROMOTIONAL & TECHNICAL INFORMATION BOB SHEPPARD QUARTET Bob Sheppard – Sax & Woodwinds Larry Koonse - Guitar Jasper Somsen - Double Bass Anthony Pinciotti - Drums BIOGRAPHY BOB SHEPPARD Over the course of an extraordinarily diverse career that has made him a first call musician in the realms of jazz, pop and the studio worlds, multi-woodwind specialist Bob Sheppard has always let his array of saxophones, flutes and clarinets do the talking. Superstar names highlight his resume, and jazz critics have been raving about him as both a sideman and leader for years, but such praise is simply a byproduct of Sheppard´s years of steady work and dedication to his craft - a tradition that continues on Close Your Eyes, his latest release as an artist and is the debut CD for the BFM Jazz label. Sheppard has been a steadfast member of the Billy Childs Ensembles and the Peter Erskine trio for over a decade. Additionally over the years, he has toured with Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs, and brought his diverse talents to more recent performances with James Taylor, Natalie Cole and Queen Latifah and most notably with the legendary Joni Mitchell on her current four-disc set and her 2007 Grammy-winning, Shine. He also played on a live studio video with Mitchell and Herbie Hancock. Other distinguished collaborations include eight years with Freddie Hubbard, and tours and performances with Chick Corea´s ensemble Origin, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Horace Silver, Lyle Mays, Nat Adderly and Toshiko Akiyoshi/Tabackin Big Band. Some of his more significant recording credits include Scott Henderson, John Beasley, Mark Isham, Otmaro Ruiz, Bill Cunliffe, vocalist Kurt Elling, Marilyn Scott, Michael Franks and Diane Reeves, while including pop icons Steely Dan, Rickie Lee Jones, Rod Stewart, Randy Newman and Stevie Wonder. BIOGRAPHY LARRY KOONSE Born into a musical family, Larry has been playing the guitar since he was seven years old. At the age of fifteen he recorded an album with his father, guitarist Dave Koonse, entitled “Dave and Larry Koonse; father and son jazz guitars.” In 1984, Larry was the first recipient of a BM in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Immediately after graduating from USC Larry toured extensively for six years as a member of the John Dankworth quartet, traveling all across the globe and backing up Cleo Laine. He is currently a member of Billy Child's landmark chamber sextet which just released a CD entitled “Lyric” featuring Brian Blade and received a grammy nomination for instrumental jazz album of the year. He has also toured and recorded with Mel Torme, Terry Gibbs, Bob Brookmeyer, Billy Childs, John Patitucci, David Friesen, Karrin Allyson, Warne Marsh and was a featured performer with the Percy Faith Orchestra on a tour of Japan. At the invitation of Nelson Mandela and UNICEF, Larry traveled to South Africa to perform for the first annual SAMIX festival with the Steve Houghton quintet. He also performed with Gary Willis in Sao Paulo for a government sponsored concert at SESC Ipiranga. In his travels, he has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Academy of Music, Disney Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and has been a featured soloist with the L.A. Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and many other orchestras throughout the world. Larry has recorded with Cleo Laine, Al Hirt, Jimmy Rowles, Lee Konitz, Larry Goldings, Alan Broadbent, Ray Brown, Bill Perkins, Toots Thielemanns, Rod Stewart, Clay Jenkins, Linda Ronstadt, David Friesen, Bob Sheppard, Charlie Haden, Natalie Cole and many other jazz artists. His solo guitar work was featured throughout “Crazy”, a feature film chronicling the life of the great guitarist Hank Garland. BIOGRAPHY JASPER SOMSEN Dutch double bassist & composer Jasper Somsen (1973) studied Jazz and Classical double bass at the conservatories of Utrecht and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. During his career Jasper has performed with a.o. Joey Calderazzo, Enrico Pieranunzi , Bert van den Brink, John Engels, Ferdinand Povel, Yuri Honing, Rita Reys, Eric Vloeimans, Michiel Borstlap, Jeroen van Vliet, Nancy Marano and singer/songwriter Lori Lieberman. As a bandleader/producer he released two highly acclaimed albums with the Jasper Somsen Group: "Dreams, Thoughts & Poetry" (The Music of Enrico Pieranunzi - 2010) and “Sardegna” (2013) - Challenge Records International. Jasper can be heard at more than 20 CD and DVD productions in both Jazz, Classical and Film music. Many of these albums he was involved both as a bass player and (co)producer. He performed in a.o. Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy & Sardinia, Poland and Finland. Besides a performer Jasper Somsen was appointed as a (guest) teacher at the conservatories in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem at both Jazz and Classical double bass departments. Also he’s the programmer of the international concert series Jazz in Wageningen, in his hometown Wageningen (The Netherlands). Current events: a mini-tour in Europe with Joey Calderazzo, performances with the “New Mediterranean Tales” (with Enrico Pieranunzi & Gabriele Mirabassi) and a collaboration with saxophonist and multi-woodwind player Bob Sheppard. BIOGRAPHY ANTHONY PINCIOTTI Anthony Pinciotti is a dynamic, innovative drummer well versed in jazz, rock, and world music. Based in New York City, Anthony performs and tours extensively with many of the most vital and forward looking musicians on the scene today. Some of the notable musicians Anthony has worked with are: James Moody, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Abercrombie, Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, Ira Sullivan, Kenny Werner, Mose Allison, Lew Tabackin, John Patitucci, Jim Hall, Bob Mintzer, Renee Rosnes, George Garzone, Frank Foster, Benny Golson, George Mraz, Houston Person, Toninho Horta, Jerry Bergonzi, Lynne Arriale, Gary Bartz, Rufus Reid, Vic Juris, Dave Liebman, Kenny Barron, and Sheila Jordan to name a few. Anthony’s passion for music became apparent when at the age of two he began playing the drums. At the age of thirteen, he started playing professionally throughout the Midwest, working with many Motown and Midwestern jazz greats. By the age of sixteen Anthony had started working with the great multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan and soon after relocated to Miami, Florida to be his drummer. After being offered a full music scholarship, Pinciotti briefly attended the University of Miami. In 1994, Anthony moved to Chicago where he quickly became a highly sought after drummer who was consistently called on to back jazz masters touring through the area. In addition to being an in-demand sideman, he also led several successful groups containing members of the AACM and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Anthony made the move to New York in 1998 and began working and touring internationally with many of the great musicians that make up the New York jazz scene. He has played at many of the most renowned venues and festivals around the world as well as appearing on numerous recordings.
