Individual Conference Champions
Nuttall is one of the most decorated student-athletes
in Cyclone history. Nuttall was key in Iowa State’s track
and cross country dominance in the late 1980s and early
1990s. Nuttall’s career accomplishments are astounding:
an individual cross country national title, six-time AllAmerican and eight-time Big Eight champion. In addition,
Nuttall’s squads finished as conference indoor champions
twice.

Koech’s accomplishments as a member of the Iowa State
track & field and cross country teams from 1989-93 made
him one of the most decorated athletes in Iowa State
athletic history. Koech’s prowess as a distance runner
earned him five individual NCAA titles (4 in track and 1
in cross country), All-America recognition nine times and
nine individual Big Eight championships throughout his
outstanding Cyclone career.

captured the program’s first national title at the ‘89 NCAA Championships. Nuttall and Koech notched a 1-2 finish,
leading the Cyclones to an 18-point victory over Oregon. The 54-point team total ranks as the ninth-lowest team
tally at the national championships in the last 50 years.
1994 Championship Team
Steve Brooks, Dmitry Drozdov, Corey Ihmels, Ian Robinson, Jonathan Estabrook and John Kihonge lifted Iowa State
back to the top of the NCAA podium at the ‘94 national championships. The team posted 65 points en route to the
title, defeating Big-8 foe Colorado (88) by 23 points. The Cyclones’ ran a 19.7 second spread across the top-five
runners, led by Robinson’s ninth-place individual finish.

Individual Conference Champions
Neppel-Darrah captured the individual title at the first-ever
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)
cross country meet in 1975, marking the first individual
national title for an ISU woman. The Cyclone standout led
Iowa State to its first of three consecutive AIAW cross
country championships from 1975-77. During her career
at Iowa State, Neppel-Darrah and her teammates were
never beaten in cross country.

Rasmussen ran to the individual crown at the 1981 AIAW
national championship, joining Neppel-Darrah as the
second runner in program history to take the title. She
led the Cyclone women to their fifth national team title
and also captured the conference title at the Big Eight
meet, becoming Iowa State’s fifth individual conference
champion.

Betsy Saina
Saina became the first Cyclone woman in the NCAA era to
take the national individual title at the 2012 championship.
One of the most decorated runners in program history,
the 11-time All-American and three-time national champion
led Iowa State to an 11th-place team finish, along with
its second consecutive Big 12 crown, also taking the
individual title at the conference meet.

AIAW Champions
The Iowa State women’s cross country team captured five consecutive national titles at the Association for Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships from 1975-1979 and added a sixth in 1981. The Cyclone women were
undefeated in team competition from 1974 to 1977. The program was headlined by individual national champions Peg
Neppel-Darrah (1975) and Dorthe Rasmussen (1981).
U.S. Federation Champions
The Cyclones captured a pair of titles as members of the U.S. Federation in 1973 and 1974. Neppel-Darrah led the charge in
‘74, capturing the individual crown.
