NEW INFORMATION REGARDING THE DOLCIANI MATHEMATICS

INFORMATION ABOUT REQUIRED PROBLEM SESSIONS IN MATH 101 AND MATH 125
We ask your cooperation in helping with the administrative details of the problem sessions. If you announce this
information in your class it will make our lives so much easier.
1.
Students were notified via email at their CUNY First address. They were asked to select a first and second
choice and either call, come, or email us with their choices. A confirmation email was then sent giving them
their time and place for the session.
2.
Once classes have begun students who have not registered for their session may come to the Center (Room
300HN or Room 302HN) or call 212-772-5371 to register during the following schedule:
Thursday, August 28
9:00 – 12:00; 12:30 – 8:00
Friday, August 29
9:00 – 12:00; 12:30 – 2:30
Saturday, August 30
9:00 – 12:00; 12:30 – 2:30
Tuesday, September 2
9:00 – 12:00; 12:30 – 2:30
Wednesday, September 3
9:00 – 12:00; 12:30 – 2:30
**AFTER September 3 WE WILL ATTEMPT TO CLOSE REGISTERING STUDENTS. PLEASE GET YOUR STUDENTS TO DO
THIS IN A TIMELY FASHION. We find it helpful to announce this at your first class meeting and walk your students
over to Room 300HN after your class.
3.
Problem sessions will begin the week of September 8.
4.
Students will be required to sign an attendance sheet each time they come to a session.
5.
Students are required to attend the session for which they register. We will strictly enforce the fire laws this
semester. In the event of a student emergency that necessitates absence, the student may check for available
seats later in the week.
6.
If a student’s scheduled session falls on a holiday, they are NOT required to make it up. There are enough
sessions to fulfill this requirement.
7.
Attendance will be sent to you via email on a monthly basis. Do not confuse these attendance emails with
usage emails also sent from the Center. They will be clearly labelled. If there is an entry highlighted this is an
indication that the student came at least 15 minutes after the session began. It is your decision as to whether
this is counted or not – we do not make those decisions.
8.
When you receive your FIRST report, please check the names on the listing and notify us then of any students
on your list who are not in your section or any names that are missing. Students change their course section
during add/drop and we do not necessarily get that information.
9.
Please do NOT tell students to come and check with us regarding how many sessions that they attended. We
do not have the staffing to do this – that is another reason we send you this information – you can easily give
them this information.
10.
Should a student disagree with our report, please do not send the student to us. Instead send Mary Jackson
(mfiechte@hunter.cuny.edu) an email with the subject “Problem Session Verification Request”. Once
submitted, staff will manually go through the attendance sheets for the day and time the student is registered,
verify the information and email you the resolution of the matter. This may take a few days because of the
volume of attendance sheets.
11.
Decisions regarding the required number of sessions, multiple attendance in a given week, etc are the purview
of the Coordinator of your course. Please speak with them and do NOT send the student to us – we will merely
send them back to you since it is not our decision.
12.
(over)
It is planned that there is a one-week lag in the content of the session to ensure that all students have seen the
material. Because of this, please try to stay on schedule or students will not get the most benefit out of these
sessions. Please ask your students to be patient in the event that the sessions are not synched up with your
particular class.
13.
Students are expected to go to the Dolciani website (www.hunter.cuny.edu/dolciani) in advance of each session
to print out the questions for the session. There are more questions given than the session leader is expected
to cover on these sheets so there is a selection and never a need to make up questions “on the fly”. Please
inform students of this.
14.
Solutions to each problem session are posted on our website each Monday morning so that students who
choose to do the additional problems may check their answers.
If you have any questions regarding the administration or set-up of the problem sessions please feel free to contact me
(bbarone@hunter.cuny.edu). Have a great semester.

MULTIMEDIA MATERIALS
The full listing of all multimedia materials can be seen on our website by going to Support Services – Multimedia
Materials. Under each course you will see NEW materials available for each course both on DVD and computer.
BRUSH-UP SKILLS
For every 100-level course, we have prepared materials with solutions for students to practice in advance of the class.
This gives them a review of prerequisite skills. These can be seen on our website by going to Support Services – BrushUp Skills. Under each course you will see a link for problem sets.
TUTORING
We have expanded our hours for upper-level courses. For every course supported by the Center, our tutoring hours are
posted on our website by going to Support Services – Tutoring.
E-TUTORING
This semester we are piloting e-tutoring on Sundays for selected courses using Scribblar. If you are teaching these
courses please point this out to your students. More information will be included in our flyers.
ON-LINE TUTORIALS
We have created links to on-line tutorials for particular courses in the event that a student needs help.
REFERRALS
We ask that each of you send us a listing of students who have scored less than a 75 on their first test. We will then do
an outreach to them and encourage them to use the Center for support. We will happily send you the listing of these
students and hours attended if you would like. We also have specific referral forms that we encourage you to use giving
us more information about the particular student.
