Thank you for taking the time to look through the 3rd Quarter Edition of the Tar Heel Van! Peak season has come and gone and I hope that each of you were able to capitalize on the increased volume. Moving industry numbers exceed last years but the economy still has a long way to go before things can be considered “back to normal”. I hope that the Fall season continues to be profitable for all
North Carolina movers and that each of us can end the year with a flourish.
The NCMA convention in my home town of Asheville is coming up quickly. The first weekend in November promises to have some great speakers and good entertainment as well as the fellowship and networking that we’re accustomed to. Eddie Biedenbach, Head
Basketball Coach at UNC Asheville and former NCSU player and coach, will be our featured speaker. Lt. Douglas Shackelford of the NC Highway Patrol will be updating the membership on CSA 2010 and other issues that pertain to the moving industry. Renowned motivational speaker Bill Early will be speaking and Financial Analyst Mike Sowinski will be addressing
“How to Maximize the Value of your Moving Business After a Recession”. Entertainment will be provided by Terry Shinn, a Native American and “Keeper of the Stories” and we’ll have live music by local bluegrass band “Buncombe Turnpike” and a show by the Thunder
Mountain Cloggers.
Please show your support for our association by signing up for the convention now!
Sponsors have generously donated their resources to insure the success of the convention but we must have the attendance of our members to truly have a successful function. It will be a great time! Don’t miss it!
I hope to see each of you in Asheville in November!

The North Carolina Utilities Commission in August 2008 amended Rule 2-8.1 as follows: e. That the applicant certifies that only persons possessing valid driver’s licenses will operate the motor vehicles that will be used for transporting household goods: f. That the applicant and all its partners/principals submit a certified criminal history records check for the immediately preceding 10-year period; and g. That the applicant or all its partners/principals certifies that he or she (1) is a United States citizen or
(2) if not a United States citizen, to submit employment authorization document(s) proving legal status to work within the United States.
When the 2008 annual reports were mailed out in February 2009, there were instructions on how to comply with these new requirements.
On June 23, 2010, the Commission issued an order to all the companies who were not in compliance with the above new requirements. This order required all these companies to show cause why they should not be subject to sanctions, including monetary penalties for failure to file the information required.
A Show Cause Hearing is scheduled for October 26, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in Commission Hearing Room
2115, Dobbs Building, 430 North Salisbury Street, Raleigh.
If you received this order and have not complied, you will need to appear in person at the hearing.
Furthermore, Commission Rule R1-22 requires that if your company is incorporated (both Inc and LLC), you will need to be represented by a lawyer. You could share a lawyer with other companies, if you like.
The criminal background checks and the fingerprinting required to be done do not remain on file with the
FBI. The original fingerprint card is returned to you. You do not need to mail the card to the
Commission, only the report that comes back to you. The Commission is only concerned with charges from the last ten years. If you have a criminal record in the last ten years, the Commission will handle each case individually. A criminal record does not automatically exclude a company from having a
Certificate of Exemption.
If you have any questions about the order or the hearing, you may contact Bruce Ramaekers at the
Commission (919) 733-4036.

The North Carolina Movers Association has partnered with Move for Hunger, a nationwide nonprofit that partners with moving companies to pick up unwanted, unopened food during the moving process and deliver it to local food banks in the fight against hunger.
Relocating can be hectic and, often times, people will take this opportunity to clean out their pantries and discard their unused food. Participating movers in the Move for Hunger program are asking their customers to donate those unopened, unwanted food items to help hungry families. Even the smallest donations go a long way. Every time movers go out on an estimate or perform a move, they leave behind a box for food items. Customers can pack the box, or their professional moving staff will pack it for them, and the mover will deliver the food to the local food bank, where it can be distributed to families in need.
Information on how to become a participant in the Move for Program will be distributed to all members of the NCMA in the near future. More information about the program can be found at www.MoveForHunger.org

The American Moving & Storage Association held “Moving Day on Capitol Hill” September 21. A delegation from the North Carolina Movers Association visited with Rep. Brad Miller, Rep. Larry Kissell and Patrick Brennan, Legislative Assistant to Senator Kay Hagan.
Over 40 movers and industry suppliers met with members of Congress. We all explained the problem of rogue operators ripping off unsuspecting consumers, stealing business from honest movers, and hurting future business opportunities by giving the entire moving and storage industry a terrible reputation among the public. Moving Day participants urged Congress to adopt AMSA legislative recommendations to strengthen entry requirements for household goods movers, intensify enforcement activities to catch the rogues already operating in the marketplace, and improve consumer education so customers can better protect themselves.
We also emphasized to members of Congress the need to pass comprehensive surface transportation legislation to improve the nation’s deteriorating roads and bridges, and to relieve growing congestion problems. Members of Congress welcome the opportunity to hear directly from their constituents, and
Moving Day on Capitol Hill offers AMSA members the chance to communicate our issues and concerns in the most effective possible way to lawmakers.

Steele and Vaughn began in downtown Greensboro in 1934. As the years passed the company was purchased by the Fogleman family from Apple-Greeson-Stout. The company began television and appliance sales and service during the 1950s. In the early 1960s Arnold Steele and Bill Vaughn formed a company that purchased the business. Over the next several years they also purchased several competitors and changed the name to Steele & Vaughn TV-Appliance Centers. Over the next 8 years the company grew to seven locations from Madison to High Point to Raleigh in the new Crabtree Valley Mall plus a free standing service center. This service center boasted 21 television and appliance technicians running 8 service trucks for in-home repair plus 3 full time roof-top antenna installation crews. The company became a Magnavox Home Entertainment Center for the Magnavox brand in the latter 1960s.
During this time fair trade made it possible for Steele & Vaughn to make 40% margin on the Magnavox brand. Of course, it became the brand the company pushed. Throughout the late 1960s and all through the 1970s Steele & Vaughn supplied all the televisions to the local Greater Greensboro Open (the GGO).
Magnavox allowed special purchases to be made by the company and these sets, over 100 portable 19” color televisions, were placed all over the golf course for live coverage to be viewed in all the tents and at all the event tables. Once the event was over, Steele & Vaughn would have their Clearance Sale of slightly used GGO TV sets. They would also include all additional electronics and appliances in stock.
Steele & Vaughn had a similar relationship with the ACC, supplying televisions to the Greensboro
Coliseum Complex for basketball games. In fact, numerous times ACC coaches congregated at Steele &
Vaughn to watch their competitors play basketball on Beta or VHS tape. During this time the main store had over 350 model numbers of televisions, stereos, VCRs and appliances. Because of the 1974 recession and subsequent economic hard times the company eventually scaled back to one store, the original downtown Greensboro location. However, in 1979 the company became a Curtis Mathes sales center introducing the concept of rent-to-own. In October 1987, the Matthews family purchased the land and assets and name. During the next 5 years we increased the sales volume by 15-25%, depending on the year. When the “war” between Sears Brand Central, Best Buy, Circuit City, Lowes and the catalog houses escalated, the full page ads and large circulars dwarfed our newspaper ads. Our volume stayed good but our margins went down by 8 points. No independent can survive that loss. On March 1, 1997 we were out of the sales business and fully into rent-to-own of furniture, appliances and electronics. In
May 1997 we opened our moving division, running an illegal moving company. From 1997 to now the company has had television and other electronics repair employing 4 to 7 technicians, a full-line rent-toown store and the moving division. Of course, we are now a legal mover. In the fall of 2007 we began to consign furniture and other home furnishings from our move customers to sell in our store. This has been a great opportunity for us. We accept only cash and have no bad checks and no processing fees.
This past November we entered discussions with Arpin Van Lines representatives and as of June of this year we are an agent for Arpin! Arpin representatives had a booth at the NCMA convention in
November 2009 that facilitated this union. I a very glad I attended the convention and made contact with my Arpin friends. This relationship has added much to my business, including additional revenue.
We’d love to hear the story of YOUR company. Just submit to the Associate office and your company could make the next issue!

By BJ Farish, Profit Builders Consulting
Have you ever uttered the words, “I hate salespeople” after a telemarketer interrupts your family dinner or a sales representative drops by your office unannounced? At times, these account executives, regional territory managers (or whatever other title they use) can be an annoyance or a distraction. In the movie “Secondhand Lions”, Michael Caine and Robert Duvall’s characters spent many hours on their front porch with their shotguns across their laps. They waited for the parade of door to door salesmen to start. As soon as each one got out of his car, they would begin shooting (not to kill, just to scare him away). One particularly tenacious salesman had done his research about these two wealthy and slightly eccentric men. Ducking behind his car, he explained that he had traveled the world looking for a product that would benefit them. The salesman asked permission to show the product, which turned out to be a clay pigeon thrower that they could use for target practice. They made the deal on the spot for an item that provided hours of entertainment. After that, they listened to every person that tried to sell them something. They did not buy every time, but they did evaluate each opportunity instead of shooting first.
Think about the times when you have bought an item from a salesperson and you actually enjoyed the experience. Do you remember thinking, “This guy doesn’t seem like a salesperson at all”? Good salespeople will ask you questions in order to understand your wants and needs so that they can help you solve a problem. They will not make you feel like you are being sold, but that they are educating you so that you can decide for yourself what option will best meet your wants and needs.
An insurance agency owner in the Seattle area is a master at the process of educating his customers to help them make decisions in their own best interest. Many times, prospective clients come to him to seek out a competitive bid so that they can save money. His rates are usually competitive, but one of his secrets to success (shhh, don’t tell anyone) is that he will recommend that his customers drop insurance that they do not need. He makes suggestions to his customers that take money out of his pocket (in the short-term, anyway). In the long-term, he reaps the benefits of being candid with his clients about the coverage that his clients need. Would you recommend a salesperson that has your best interest in mind? Would you recommend a salesperson that is willing to sacrifice short-term gain for long-term relationships?
How can you and your sales team show your customers and potential customers that you want to help them make a decision that will benefit them? Sales representatives can learn from the Boy Scouts of
America. Their law states that a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. As your team meets with customers, have them keep the points of the scout law in their minds, especially the trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind parts of the law. They will experience greater success as they focus on helping their customers instead of selling their customers.

Registered International Mover Program Completely Updated
Since AMSA’s Registered International (RIM) program was created in 1999, it has represented a solid platform from which a company and its employees can expand and grow in this challenging market segment. As the membership in
RIM continues to grow, so does the message the program carries.
To ensure this program reflects today’s international relocation environment, over the past 18 months AMSA (in coordination with the International Committee) has coordinated an extensive updating of the information contained in the
RIM materials. RIM now includes more than 250 companies and more than one thousand individuals.
For more information or to order a copy of the fully-revised RIM Training Manual, please contact

Craiglist adds “Warning Link” to Moving Services Pages
The popular on-line classified ads website Craigslist recently added a link at the top of each of its moving services pages for every US city labeled, BEFORE HIRING A MOVER . This link takes visitors to a page that includes links to FMCSA, as well as to state public utility commissions or other regulatory bodies in eleven states (California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, North
Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington State).
Although several state associations have successfully pushed Craigslist to do this on a state-by-state basis, including Washington, California and Illinois, this is the first time this link has been posted
“universally” on the site and therefore visible to visitors in every Craigslist city. The move follows the most recent state efforts to improve Craigslist warnings, this one from Pennsylvania Moving & Storage
Associates.
Pat McLaughlin, chair of the National Council of Moving Associations, encourages you to get involved if the government agency responsible for our industry in your state is not yet listed. Contact legal@craigslist.org
to have your state’s agency added.
