P
ublic protection is the common
mission of all agencies
engaged in criminal justice.
Each city requires services and
trained personnel to check crime,
minimize loss of life and property,
and enforce regulations that
protect health and safety. Those
seeking criminal justice careers
may work as public officers or
security guards; positions requiring
varied combinations of education
and experience plus an interest in
serving the community. In most cases,
college level work is necessary to
obtain the qualifications and to
compete in written examinations.
Harold Washington College offers
a broad-based criminal justice
curriculum dealing with the social
order problems of our society
from the perspective of police and
courts.
Career & Employment
Possibilities
Local civil services regulations
govern the appointment of police
officer recruits. Promotion is
determined by length of service,
scores on a written examination
and
on-the-job
performance.
Employment outlook is good for
those with some college education.
