Where was Sam
Houston during the
Battle of the Alamo?
He was at the Convention of 1836.
On the morning of March 6th (the
day the Alamo fell), they received the
letter from Travis begging for help.
He immediately left for Gonzales to
get his troops and retreat. Upon
arriving at Gonzales, he learned of
the fall of the Alamo.
Who ordered the
Runaway Scrape and
why?
Sam Houston ordered this
mass evacuation to get his
troops out of harms way and
to get them to a place where
he could train them and
acquire more reinforcements.
Who was sent by Sam
Houston to destroy it?
Jim Bowie; Houston knew
they did not have the men
nor the supplies to defend
the Alamo against Santa
Anna's army.
Who won the battle of
the Alamo?
The Mexicans won this battle. Santa
Anna spared the life of the women
& children and told Susanna
Dickinson to tell what she saw here
today hoping it would scare Texans
into submission.
Why did Houston not answer
Travis' call to help them at the
Alamo? (think about his battle plan
and the things he felt needed to
come first before he had planned
on joining them at the Alamo)
He knew he did not have enough
resources AND his men weren't
trained yet. His battle plan was to
retreat, get his men trained, then
lure Santa Anna into a vulnerable
spot for capture.
Why did some choose
to defend the Alamo
and others did not? (list
reasons for both sides)
The Alamo was located in a key spot
to stop (or at least detain) Santa
Anna's army. This would provide
time to Texans to gain strength to
fight. Because Texans were weak in
number/resources, they could not
withstand a direct battle against the
Mexican army.
Why was the Alamo
chosen as a defensive
post?
It was located on the
old San Antonio Road
and was one of the first
towns Santa Anna
would come to.
