RUTGERS
1959 Scarlet Letter Update
Compiled by W. John Bauer ● wj.bauer@comcast.net
–––––
Introduction
“Golden Days” from Sigmund Romberg’s The Student Prince concludes with these lines: We will know life has nothing sweeter than its springtime.
Golden days, when we’re young, Golden days.
Today we ‘59ers can affirm that our years at Rutgers were, indeed, Golden Days. As we
contemplate our entrance into the Old Guard, we can read the brief biographies and greetings
classmates have submitted. Take measure of our many accomplishments and blessings. Recall
those who cannot be with us as well as those who have already met their Maker. This update
ends with an “In Memoriam” page.
We acknowledge that nearly one-quarter of the members of our class were in the armed forces
before entering Rutgers and that many others of us served our country after receiving our
degrees. Thanks to the G.I. Bill doors opened and tremendous societal changes were getting
underway when we left “the Banks of the Old Raritan.” The decades pass in review.
Fifty years after our graduation we find that Rutgers has grown exponentially and that in many
ways it is vastly different from the institution we knew. Still its core values and great
educational experiences that were so important for us continue for tomorrow’s world. Yes,
Rutgers prepared us for life, and we are eternally grateful for that preparation. “We sing thy
praise, old Rutgers, our Alma Mater fair.”
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of our reunion, and thanks to Nancy
Boucher, Anthony Guido, Bill Queale, Mike Rutkowski, Alan Schreihofer, and Isabel Vecchio
for their assistance with this publication.

Married Eleanore Jenzer, Cedar Crest College ' 59 in 1962. We have 3 children, George III, University of
Richmond; Krista, West Virginia University; and Jill, University of Dayton; and 7 grandchildren ages 9-2. I have
been working as an independent sales representative for the past 15 years and in the textile business since
graduation. I represented several companies but now only one. I find it a great way to slow down but still keep
active and hope to keep working as long as I am healthy. I'm looking forward to our 50th reunion and to seeing
many of you there. ~ George

I'm retired now, after a long career in Engineering, Engineering Management and General Management. I
worked for large and startup companies and even founded my own venture-backed startup to help launch the
wireless LAN market. I led Apple's kickstart to the wireless personal computer market. Now, I'm consulting for
another startup. I was married to my high school sweetheart for 41 years before losing her to cancer and am now
married to another wonderful woman. I have two adopted children.

After Rutgers I embarked on a rewarding, productive, and interesting 43-year career in chemical research at FMC
Corporation in Princeton. Along the way, I obtained additional degrees from Rutgers (B.A. Mathematics, MS
Chemistry), graduated from Officers Candidate School, and spent some time as an Armored Cavalry officer in
the New Jersey National Guard. In 1960, I married a wonderful person, Ann (Douglas graduate), and we have
three children (two of them Rutgers graduates) and five grandchildren. Ann is a nationally ranked table tennis
player and enjoys historical research. I have been involved in community activities including coaching football,
public official, president or trustee of many nonprofit corporations, and Governor of the New Jersey Kiwanis
District. As a retiree, I am active in Kiwanis, boating, and our local historical society. I am indebted to Rutgers
for the education that allowed me to successfully compete with people from major universities here and abroad.

Upon graduation, I entered the Navy Officer Candidate School, received a commission, and was assigned to the
Engineering Department of the USS Lake Champlain. From there I went to the U of Penn - Fels Institute/
Wharton School for an MA in Local and State Government Administration. My first position was in the Research
and Budget Office, Phoenix, AZ. After that I became Assistant City Manager in Walnut Creek, CA, where I met
my Mary Duffy, whom I married in 1970. (Two children, Jeanne and Stephen; two grandsons.) I had four other
managerial positions in California cities, including City Manager of Sausalito. I retired in 2002 after 34 years in
California city government. I am enjoying this new life: learning to be a good grandfather, hiking, gardening,
travel, volunteering at the Westminster Senior Center and also as mediator in the Orange County Superior Court.

My wife Shirley passed away in 1997. We were married 42 years had 2 children and 5 grandchildren. After
graduation, I worked for Chase Manhattan Bank, Price Waterhouse & Co., Noland Co.,Trenton Jr College and
Mercer County Community College; as a computer programmer, systems analyst, manager and teacher. In 1969,
I started R&L Data Centers. Fortunately, the business is still doing well and is being run by my son-in-law. I have
been involved in a number of community activities including being a member of township committee, mayor,
member of planning board, library commission, Jennie Haver Scholarship Committee, Rotarian for almost 40
years and trustee of The Hunterdon Medical Center for 25 years.
Apgar, Donald, UC’59. 36112 Watsonia St., Fort Mill, SC 29707 (803) 396-5697.
1959 was by far the most eventful year of my life. In January, during exam week, I married Mary Adams, a
Rutgers Law School student. After we graduated together in June, we sailed on the Queen Elizabeth for a belated
honeymoon and toured England for three weeks. On our return in July I received the most substantial promotion
of my 50-year career at PSE&G -- thanks to University College. To climax a great year, our first son, James, was
born in November! I've been retired for twenty years and now reside at Sun City, South Carolina, a suburb of
Charlotte, and return to New Jersey to spend summers at Toms River.
Apgar, Henry. 776 Silver Cloud St, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. hapgar@mcri.com
After graduation from the Rutgers Engineering School, I went to IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. One year later, I
started my Air Force ROTC commitment and stayed on active duty for ten years, residing in Rome, NY;
Wiesbaden, Germany; and Bedford, MA. After release from active duty, I kept involved, retiring as a reservist in
1993. Most of my military assignments were in the systems acquisition and comptroller fields. My other civilian
experience (all in California) included Bunker-Ramo, The Aerospace Corporation, and (currently) MCR, of
which I am part owner. From a systems engineering perspective, I migrated to being a cost engineer. Thirty years
ago, I helped found a professional group, the International Society of Parametric Analysts (ISPA), which
promotes the discipline of parametric cost estimating for engineering projects and government proposals. Married
with two grown children, I plan to retire in 2010 from civilian life to develop my vineyard in Grass Valley, CA.

Went to work for Esso Standard Oil as a sales representative following graduation. Joined Ethicon Inc., a
Johnson & Johnson Co., in 1964 as a Sales Representative in Boston. Held a number of Sales Management
positions before being named Vice President of Sales and a member of the Board of Directors in 1980. Continued
on the Board through 1994 when I took an early retirement but was hired back as a consultant which lasted
through 2008. My wife Carol and I have a son 26 years old and three grandchildren who live in Las Vegas. I keep
busy playing golf and serving on the Board of Directors of the local YMCA along with attending Rutgers
Football and Basketball games. Hank Goin, Mike Basarab, Bruce Webster, and I have played in the last several
Alumni golf tournaments and hope to win one more on our 50th!

After graduation, I spent 3 years in the USAF in Washington, D.C. and the AF Academy in Colorado. Started
business career with GE in sales in New England. Spent time in marketing and sales with Revere Copper &
Brass, International Silver Co. and Aladdin Industries. Joined the Schwinn Bicycle Co. in 1981 as Group VP in
charge of marketing, sales and distribution. Founded Giant Bicycle Co in 1988 as President. Joined Raleigh
America, Inc. as President & COO in 1994, and retired as Chairman & CEO in 2008. Received the industry
Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Inducted into the Rutgers Football Hall of Fame in 1988. I have 4
children from my first marriage and 9 grand children. My wife Jean and I just celebrated our 25th anniversary.
Enjoy golf, skiing, and traveling. Am proud of the recent success of the RU Football program particularly
academically. Look forward to reunion in May.

Since graduating from Rutgers, I have been involved in teaching, twelve years as an English teacher and twentyeight years teaching Bible at Timothy Christian School in Piscataway as well as teaching and preaching in my
local church, Cedarcroft Bible Chapel, in South Plainfield. God has blessed me over the years with a wonderful
wife, Holly, for thirty-six years, and a wonderful life as His child through faith in Jesus Christ Who paid for my
sin with His life and then conquered death to give me eternal life. While at Rutgers, the Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship helped me spiritually in establishing my faith in Christ on a firm foundation. Now at age 72, I am
still actively involved in God's service and loving it! Our two sons are both serving God also. Our daughter-inlaw and two precious grandsons complete our family. "For the Lord is good..." - Psalm 100:5
Baird, Harold P. 1505 Marconi Rd., Wall, NJ 07719. hpb1505@hotmail.com
To preclude being drafted, I joined the National Guard in May of ’59 and began 6 months active duty, becoming
a tank crewman at Fort Knox, KY. If you have a M48 Patton Tank around, I can drive it away for you. Years
1960 until 2005 were in the wholesale lumber industry, sales and management, in Port Newark, Irvington, and
South Plainfield, NJ, and Boston, MA. I became VP and General Manager of a forest products distribution
center in South Plainfield. My first marriage brought daughter Diane, a Rutgers grad (LC’91), her husband Gil
(LC’91), and two grandkids. My marriage 22 years ago to Evelyn brought three stepchildren, eight grandkids,
and one great grandson. Retirement released me from a 100-mile roundtrip commute and time to enjoy reading,
trips, home maintenance, and relaxation with family, friends, and my Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity brothers. I’ve
enjoyed 30 years as a reunion committeeman and alumni class officer.

After Rutgers, I attended the U of Conn where I earned a master’s degree in clinical psychology but later dropped
out of the PhD program to attend the U of Penn to earn an advanced degree in art history. After three years and
no degree, I accepted a position as a clinical psychologist for the District of Columbia. I served in the infamous
regime of the Marion Barry administration. I stewarded the White House Conference on Families delegation for
the City under the Carter administration. I made trips to China and to Egypt as a member of the People to People
Ambassadors Program. Fond memories of Rutgers include singing in the Glee Club and having the calypso solo
in “Marry a Woman Uglier than You.” Being compared to Harry Belafonte—fun times. Singing in the University
Choir doing the Verdi Requiem with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy was breathtaking.
Barron, Robert H. 14 Nordic Dr, Petersburg, NJ 08270 (609) 628-4230. robot27@comcast.net
Taught math at Middle Township High School in Cape May Court House 1959-60. Went to University of British
Columbia for one year of graduate study in physics followed by study at Rutgers. Taught chemistry, physics, and
math at Middle 1962-66. Became an instructor in math and later physics at Rutgers Camden while studying
theoretical physics at Temple University. Received my Ph.D. in January, 1972. Taught computer science at
Stockton State College 1981-86. Retired from Wildwood High School where I taught physics, A.P. chemistry and
A.P. calculus in 1998 when I also retired from my electronics business that I had started in Avalon in 1957. My
wife of 44 years, Muriel and I have two sons, one daughter, and six grandchildren with a seventh on the way. I've
canoed extensively in northern Canada and visited all 50 states and 10 provinces. We are active in First Baptist
Church in Cape May Court House.

After Rutgers I pursued graduate studies at the University of Southern California. To avoid being drafted, I
entered the Navy O.C.S. program and was commissioned in December 1960. Initially assigned to the USS
Pocono which had participated in the Normandy invasion. Transferred to the USS Liddle, which had been
mothballed after being hit by Japanese Kamikaze. Finally assigned to the Caribbean Ready Squadron which had
an active role in the Cuban missile crisis. Finished my tour as a LTJG and Engineering officer. Married Mary the
day after my discharge. Three sons: Geoff, like me a Theta Chi at Rutgers; Tom, who spent 4 years on the nuclear
carrier Eisenhower CVN 69; and Craig, who became an Ohio University graduate. After 3 years as a physical
education teacher and coach in Woodbridge Township schools, I left education for a sales career primarily in
New York City and North Jersey. Retired to SC in 2007.
Bauer, W. John. 75 Galway Dr, Mendham, NJ 07945-2011 (973) 543-9570. wj.bauer@comcast.net
I was a Lieutenant at the Signal School, Fort Monmouth (1960-62). Then holding MA and PhD degrees (NYU), I
spent my career teaching English at Kean University (formerly Newark State). In 2002 I became a volunteer for
nonprofits. (I just started another 4-year term on the Scholarship Committee of the Kean University Foundation.)
Sadly, Doris, my second wife, passed away Christmas, 1999. Since then I have helped my multi-talented sister,
Nancy, restore the historic Summit Playhouse, oldest community theatre in NJ (State/National Registers
designations expected, 2009). I enjoy travel, gardening, singing, acting, genealogy, and going to the theatre and
symphony. Highlights of my Rutgers experience included: John Ciardi (composition and poetry), “Soup” Walter
(Glee Club and University Choir), leading Phi Gamma Delta brothers in song, and in the summer 2007 touring
Germany and The Netherlands with the Glee Club. Oh, Classmates, this May let’s all sing, celebrate, and connect
once more!
Bauman, John D. Naples, FL. JohnDee119@earthlink.net
I entered Rutgers after four years of Air Force service and married Diane Williams, my high school sweetheart, at
the end of my freshman year. Professor Longo was my favorite professor. Following graduation I worked for GE
(Aerospace) for ten years in Utica, NY, and in Valley Forge, PA. I helped design the guidance systems for
putting the astronauts in space. Had some exciting moments in the blockhouse at Cape Canaveral during
countdowns hoping our warning lights didn't come on. It was always a game of chicken to see who would call
"hold" first. After GE I spent the twenty-five years (three companies) in the commercial computer business,
designing, programming, selling, and managing those who do those things. We retired in 1997 to Ocean Pines,
MD, now our summer home. Five years later I discovered I disliked snow so we moved to Naples. We travel to
Europe and elsewhere when possible

My wife Aurora and I returned from Rutgers to our home in Peru in 1960. 4 sons, 11 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren. Have a serious scientific hobby collecting and writing botanical descriptions of Peruvian orchids.
Grow mushrooms to support the field trips. Fish for trout on high Andean lakes14,500 ft a.m.s.l. In my orchid
work have been associated with professional taxonomists Leslie Garay of Harvard, Herman Sweet, Tufts Univ.,
Calaway H. Dodson, Missouri Bot. Garden. Dr. Dodson and I published 200 Peruvian species in Icones
Plantarum Series II, Orchids of Peru. Since 1991 have worked with Dr. Eric A. Christenson of UConn
publishing 800 orchid species in our Icones Orchidacearum Peruviarum® which included over 200 species new
to science. With Mark Chase, head of the DNA laboratory in Kew, England we described a new orchid genus for
Peru. Aurora and I follow Rutgers football on Directv. Have a wonderful reunion and all the best.

After Rutgers, I attended The George Washington University School of Law, receiving a JD degree in 1963.
I was also employed in D.C. by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner. In 1963,
I joined a New York law firm specializing in patent and trademark (IP) law. In 1971, I moved to the law
department of American Home Products (AHP) Corporation (now Wyeth), a multinational pharmaceutical and
consumer products company. In 1987, I became the world-wide head of AHP's IP legal function with a staff of
about 35 IP lawyers, until my retirement in 2004. Currently, I provide IP counseling to clients and render expert
witness testimony. I married my second wife Marge Coleman in 1976. We have four children between us and
seven wonderful grandchildren. Marge and I have travelled to about fifty countries over the past twenty five
years, including many third world countries.

After graduation, I received a M.A. in history from the University of Wisconsin in 1962.While studying for my
PhD, I received a commission to become a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State and served
in Washington, DC, Germany and New Zealand. My career in international banking began in 1970, and I worked
for two large banks with interesting foreign living assignments in Brazil and Germany and extensive travel
worldwide. My travels continued when I joined SunTrust Bank in 1982 and when I moved to Richmond, VA. I
married my wife, Lilli, in 1995; by 1999 we were both retired and able to spend more time in Virginia Beach, our
second home, and to travel to Europe. My daughter Katharine Woodhouse-Beyer teaches anthropology at Rutgers
in New Brunswick. As a lifelong historian, I have witnessed many events that would have never been foreseen,
and so, it’s been the “best of times and the worst of times.”
Bienstock, Max. 12 Overbrook Parkway, Wynnnewood, PA19096-3518.
Thanks. I extend my appreciation to you for undertaking this monumental job.

Undecided as to career I took a six month active duty stint with the National Guard. One day I was plucked from
the drill field by a desperate school music supervisor in Englewood, NJ, and thus began an almost fifty- year
surprise career as a teacher of choral and general music and district director of media and technical services.
Happily back in the music classroom for the last five years, I managed to retire in New Jersey, Connecticut and
Massachusetts! Having had two wonderful children from my first marriage, I recently celebrated my 25th
wedding anniversary with my second wife, Catherine. I love walking and I love dirt, spending time on the local
trails with our dogs and gardening compulsively. We both sing up a storm in a variety of amateur and
professional choruses, and I have served on the boards of many of them.
Blanch, David. 394 Hickory Point Rd, Pasadena, MD 21122 (410) 437-2213.dblanch259@aol.com
Upon graduation I attended OCS in Newport, RI, and after commissioning, I participated in "Operation Deepfreeze 61." I maintain, but cannot prove, I was one of the first 500 people to set foot on the Antarctic Continent.
After leaving the ICE, we went to many South Pacific Islands, then for a six-month Mediterranean Cruise. In
Oct.- Nov. 1962 sat off the Cuban Coast for two weeks. I witnessed events that are not in the history books today.
After leaving the Navy in ‘63, I worked for Sears for 16 years, then started investing in Real Estate and other
entrepreneurial projects. I have been fortunate to have visited all 7 continents and over 52 countries. Today I
travel several times a year and have nurtured many good friends in Poland, Russia, Serbia, Germany, Spain, and
Switzerland. I enjoy visiting and eating and drinking with them. Together we solve all the World problems
Bodner, Seth. New Jersey. I can be reached at seth.bodner@verizon.net or 908-522-0087.
Upon graduation I married Douglas graduate class of '59 Janet Malovany and have enjoyed her company for the
ensuing near 50 years. Our children live in the D.C. area, and we have two grandchildren there as well. After
graduation I attended Yale Law School and Janet taught in local schools in Connecticut. After law school I
practiced privately in D.C. and then in the US Dept. of Commerce. I worked on international trade matters and
rose to be Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce. I left the government in late 1974 to join an industry trade
group. In 1979 I joined another trade group, this time in the garment industry, and remained with that group until
2002. I am now retired and Janet teaches ESL at NJIT. While bound to the academic calendar, we travel
whenever possible and enjoy visiting family and friends.
Boehm, George. 159 Hedgerow Lane, West Chester, PA 19380 (610) 725-5987.
My wife, Marguerite, and I live near West Chester, PA near our son, daughter and 2 grandchildren. Three days
after graduation from RU with my BSEE, I married my childhood sweetheart, Marguerite, whom I had known
since 7th grade, and moved to PA to start a long career in the Aerospace industry. After progressing thru project,
program and general management with both large and small companies, I decided it was time to do something
different so I now work for the Small Business Development Center of Kutztown University where I consult with
small companies that do business with the government. Working with small companies, researchers,
entrepreneurs, inventors, etc. and associating with graduate assistants from KU provides a continuing and varying
challenge. Our summer weeks/weekends are spent at our vacation home in Avalon, NJ enjoying our
children/grandchildren.

Does anyone remember me? I really have not always kept in touch, so I can’t remember many names, unless I
look in our yearbook! I always thought of the Rutgers Old Guard on alumni day as feeble people on motorized
chairs. Not anymore! My thoughts on Rutgers begin with the day my parents dropped me off on College Avenue
to fend for myself as a new freshman. The sky seemed the limit to me then! I have always been a loyal alumnus,
even when my daughter was not accepted as a student in the nineties. My four years at Rutgers, my three years as
an Army dentist in Alaska, and the years I spent in boating were surely the best times of my life. I even started
going to football games again when coach Schiano recently turned things. I would love to get season tickets, but
so far no luck. At age 71, most of my classmates at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry have
retired. Retirement is not for me! I will continue to practice for many years to come. My practice developed into
one that extensively treats anxious patients. Barbara and I celebrated our 40th anniversary last summer. My
daughter Nicole, who went to the University of Miami, lives in Washington, DC.
Boudreaux, Paul. 1000 N. Shore Dr. NE #4, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. boudrx@aol.com
After graduation, married Barbara Marks, Douglass '59. Spent most of my working years as a U.S. civil servant;
9 years with the IRS, and 24 years with the CIA. Lived in Silver Spring, MD, most of those years. Two children:
son is a law prof, & daughter in publishing. After retirement from federal service, I worked for a few Beltway
Bandits (the last one SAIC), then self-employed for a few years. We retired to St. Petersburg, FL, in early 2007.
Still in reasonably good health; able to bend over & tie my own shoes. I'm playing senior softball 3 days a week,
some other sports, and really enjoying volunteering at the St. Pete Museum of History. Enjoy following RU
football, but wondering if RU hasn’t lost its way. (Should we still be playing Lehigh, Lafayette, and Delaware?)

I might have lived a little longer in paradise--my one bedroom apt on EAST 64TH ST in Manhattan, if my new
wife hadn't spied that cockroach. I had met her at the U of Penn in 1961. A few years after she dumped me, I was
allowed to take her out again in 1966, and in 1967 we married–my only important accomplishment. Became a
CA real estate broker, residential investor and retired at 55 to collect our rents. We spend winters in Walnut
Creek, CA, and summers on the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake in Royal Oak, MD. I miss all my very
accomplished classmates--for that reason. I have reluctantly submitted this humble review. I will definitely attend
the reunion--you can count on me.

After graduating from Rutgers, I went to New York Theological Seminary, graduating with an MRE degree. For
3 years I taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts in New Jersey. I married Gladys Jean Heichel and we moved to
Louisville, KY, where I completed a Ph.D. in Education at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Next, I taught
in the Social Sciences at Grand Rapids Baptist College. For two years from 1976, I served as Academic Dean at
Lancaster Bible College. We then spent 15 years at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, MN. During that time I
completed the Management for Lifelong Education Program at Harvard and was a visiting scholar at the
University of Minnesota. For the past 16 years I have served as an Associate Dean and Professor of Christian
Education at Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest. My wife and I have two children and five
grandchildren.

After Rutgers I spent time exploring Europe and then had an International Rotary Fellowship in Ireland at The
National University (1962-63). On my return, I taught at the Hun School of Princeton for two years. The next
year was given to my own project when I attempted to start a school in Ireland, in memory of JFK, to help Irish
students enter American colleges. It was a memorable experience, but I was unable to raise the necessary money.
A job offer at Princeton High School gave me 26 years to look back on with some great memories. I retired in
1991. While teaching I started 4 small businesses in my hometown, Lambertville. I still have 3: The Swan Hotel,
a restaurant bar (37 years); The Boathouse, a pub (27 years); and The Coryell Art Gallery (30 years). I had a
wonderful wife, Diane, who died in 2001.

Still going strong at 71 (72 on March 17, 2009). Since 1994, I have been Head of Adult Programming and Public
Relations at the Englewood, NJ, Public Library. I have 50 years of newspaper, trade magazine, and public
relations experience. I hold a B.A. Degree in Journalism from Rutgers The State University. I doubt whether I
will ever retire, particularly the way the economy has been going lately. I have been married for 48 years (49
years on January 23, 2009) to the former Arlene Shampain. I have two daughters, Lauren Steinbrecher and Susan
Gort, and six grandchildren ages 5-15. In October 2007, I received a Community Service Award from the Friends
of the Englewood Public Library. In my spare time, I enjoy reading; going to sporting events, particularly
baseball and football; and giving talks to senior groups on a variety of subjects.

After Rutgers, I married Judy Van Pelt (3 children, 4 grandchildren) and soon found myself stationed as a USAF
lieutenant in England at RAF Sculthorpe in the 47th Bob Wing. Following military service I spent my career in
the oil and gas industry. At Transcontinental Gas Pipeline I helped construct their first fully automated
compressor station. Then in New England I worked for Bristol Co, Foxboro Co, and Digital Equipment in
managerial positions related to energy and chemical industries. Next I managed an international business unit for
Bailey Controls in Cleveland. Finally, I was VP of Oil and Gas for a systems integrator (Real) in Denver. I retired
to Maine where I have my boat in the local harbor and keep busy with work for Town Budget Committee, Zoning
Board, and York County UCC Church Missions. I organize trips to New Orleans for disaster recovery and to
Honduras for a feeding program.

where the fishing gets good in early March.

Upon graduation, I entered the army as a 2d Lt and after 23 years retired as a Colonel. My last assignment was at
the Presidio of San Francisco where I retired and entered federal civil service as the Comptroller of Hq., Sixth
U.S. Army. We were fortunate to call San Francisco our home for many years. We then decided warmer weather
would be a better climate for us. We now live in Henderson, NV and are blessed with many friends and a busy
social life. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and Aggie and I have five daughters, all happily married
and 12 grandchildren. This summer we will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

My beloved wife of 46 years, Pat, died on December 9th after a short, but painful battle with non-hodgkins
lymphoma. We met in 1960 in Atlanta when I was an Army 2nd Lt and she was a stewardess in training for
Delta. We were married in 1962. She was a New Orleans girl and I was a "Yankee" from Chicago. Cultural
adjustments for both families were "interesting," but everything worked out fine and our families built a strong,
loving relationship. My career, all in Technical Sales & Marketing, took us to Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago
and finally in 1981 Seattle area where we became "permanent." I retired from GE in 2000 after 31 years.
Daughter Julie, son Chris, spouses and 6 grandchildren all living and prospering here in the great Pacific
Northwest. In marriage our passions together were grandchildren, traveling and boating. Pat's individual passion
was genealogy. Mine was, and still is, golf.

Unlike the rest of you long timers, I have been divorced four times and am back with number two. I have four
children, two of whom are doctors, one a professional artist and one an educator, and ten grandchildren, all of
whom live close by. After graduating as a ceramics engineer, I went into the Army for two years stationed at
camp swampy, Fort Stewart, GA and then to Georgetown Law School, settling in Northern Virginia, and never
looking back on engineering. I have been in private law practice throughout my career, am still actively
practicing, specializing in national security law and matters dealing with security clearances and classified
information, a natural for Washington DC. I will retire when I find something more interesting than what I do
now. In my spare time I am the correspondent for my fraternity, Phi Epsilon Pi, now, sad to say, defunct.

member of any fraternity, but I (and a number of others from the class of '59) had the privilege of belonging to a
cooperative living group located on the Rutgers Ag Campus. A book entitled The Helyar Experience:
Cooperative Living on the Agriculture and Cook College Campus of Rutgers University was published in 1992
and chronicles the activities from the depression years up to the early 1990s. Although students were housed in
numerous buildings on the campus during my time, there is now one location known as the Helyar House. I had
the honor of contributing to a chapter in the book describing what it was like during the1950s.

My fondest Rutgers memories include: Rutgers beating Princeton twice during our watch. Hearing America’s
poet laureate Robert Frost reading from his works at annual visits to campus. Performing in Professor Turner’s
French-language production of Gide’s Le Retour de l’Enfant Prodige at the Chapel. Most of all, I recall the words
and vision of two superb educators in first semester senior year: Dr. Mason W. Gross’s Philosophy of Aesthetics
and Professor John Ciardi’s Introduction to Poetry. Beyond their accomplishments, Gross and Ciardi knew how
to open minds and lead us outside the box. I am still energized by their brilliance. But it was far too short: Dr.
Gross then became President of Rutgers mid-year, and Professor Ciardi took leave to complete his definitive
translation of Dante’s Il Purgatorio. After long advertising careers, my talented wife Shawn and I still publish

After Rutgers I married someone I met at the NJ Newman Club Federation; 7 children, now 11 grandchildren. In
my second marriage to Teresa, I gained 3 stepchildren and 7 stepgrandchildren. Concurrently, I worked in the
Human Resources field, retiring in 2001 as a VP for Fleet Bank (formerly Summit Trust.) Like other Rutgers
Glee Clubbers, I am forever indebted to director “Soup” Walter. I have sung with over 15 church, collegiate,
community, and barbershop groups, and have performed in over 800 shows/concerts (not including church
services) in 37 states, Canada, the British Isles, Italy, Austria, Germany, Monte Carlo, and the Bahamas.
Presently, I sing in Sacred Heart Cathedral Choir in Newark. Finally, I have served for 15 years on the RAA
Board, am a member of the Loyal Sons and Daughters, have participated in 23 of the last 25 reunions, and am
eager to join the Old Guard in May.

After graduation I spent 2+ years in the Army fulfilling an ROTC commitment, then got an MS in geology at the
University of North Dakota (free ride). Took a job with Amoco Oil Co. in WY, got married, moved to Denver,
had two boys, and got transferred to Amoco Research in Tulsa, OK to do petroleum geochemistry. In 1972 I took
a job with Superior oil in Houston, TX where we have been ever since. Jobs with Getty oil and Robertson
Research followed and we started our own company in 1983, all in the field petroleum geochemistry. Sold out in
2001 and still work as Chief Geochemist for EOG Resources in Houston because I like the challenge of making
unconventional oil and gas reservoirs profitable, it pays well, and it keeps the brain from atrophying. We have
five grandkids, travel a lot, and do volunteer work. Life is good.

50 years. It’s as though someone hit a cosmic fast-forward button. 17 years in New Jersey and Manhattan in
book publishing and banking and then 33 years in New Hampshire in magazine publishing and real estate. And
raising a family. I loved every minute of that. When it comes down to it, children are what really count: Emily
and Mark. I consider myself very fortunate thanks to the G.I. Bill to become the only one in my original family of
eight to go to college. When I look back at Rutgers, I realize how much it provided me with a lifelong
appreciation of fine music, art and history. And government. After decades of sitting on the sideline and
grumbling, I got involved in the last two presidential campaigns and in doing so met a thoroughly beguiling
retired physician and poet, Lilla Lyon. We married in August of 2007.

After graduation I migrated to the West coast to try my engineering in the aerospace industry. Living on the West
Coast was OK, but my heart was still in the East so after a couple of years when Hamilton-Standard was
interviewing there, I came back East and settled in Connecticut. My most notable achievement was winning
United Technologies’ highest engineering award for designing the first automated aircraft cabin pressure control
system which is used on most aircraft. Took early retirement in 1995 and went to work in Berlin, Germany, for
BMW’s jet engine division and stayed two years. Then came back and consulted for Pratt & Whitney engine
division and then back to my original employer, Hamilton-Sundstrand. My family consists of an ex-wife, three
children and four great grandchildren. Five years ago I remarried and acquired three stepchildren. I still live in
Connecticut and am still consulting.

TIME FLIES. After graduation in ceramic engineering from Rutgers, I started my career in the sanitary ware
industry. American Standard, Kohler, and Crane Co. were among the firms with which I was employed. As part
of my career with these companies, I did consulting work in factories in São Paulo, Brazil; Seville, Spain;
Bangkok, Thailand, and Tunis, Tunisia. At the end of my career, I opted out of the industrial ‘rat race’ and
purchased an Italian restaurant in Ashland, OH. (Quite a change of pace.) In 1960 I married my wife of 49 years,
Phyllis, and we have two children. We now all live in Tampa and enjoy golf and a wonderful climate.

Marketing, my educational programs addressed adults and vocational and 4-H youth. From 1969-1976, on a parttime basis, I earned my Ed.D. from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education. Special interests included leading
the development, implementation, and evaluation of research and education related to farmer cooperatives and
farmer-to-consumer direct marketing. Am greatly enjoying retirement with family, friends, and organizational
involvements. My wonderful wife, Marilyn, and I were married June 18, 1960. Each of two sons, Morris and

son Jim and daughter Sharon, embarked on a twenty-year marketing career with Sun Oil Company, Petroleum
Products Division. Took the "Golden Handshake" from Sun in St. Louis in 1985, and brought the family back
East for another twenty years. Three different oil companies and two attempts at retirement later, we sold the Big

Widowed in 1997. Married Martha Marlow in 2004. 4 children from first marriage; 2 grandchildren ● Regrets:
Rutgers’ expensive attempt to be a big time player in collegiate football. It was better to have no expectations and
come out on the winning end every once in a while ● Realization: We were the generation that could not fail. We
entered the work force in a time of great economic expansion and were competing with the lesser numbers from
the depression era on one end and the drop outs from the Viet Nam era on the other.

Say it isn’t so. Fifty years is a long time, even for a history major. How young I was in 1959! Those were the
days when I met classmates and professors who made a lifetime impression. It was at Kappa Sigma Fraternity
where I met my future wife, Maryann. We were married 42 years and had two children, Christopher and
Elizabeth. She passed away in 2003. I remarried in 2005. Now Marguerite and I have a large combined family,
and the two of us travel extensively by cruise ship and RV. I received my Army commission upon graduation
from Rutgers and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1980. During my career I had tours in Germany, Vietnam
(twice), finally Korea. The Army made sure that I was well educated in the military arts, i.e. artillery basic and
advanced course, aviation, Ft Leavenworth and a MA, Business, from Central Michigan U.

Following Rutgers, I headed west for an MA at the University of Wyoming and then to Fort Mason, San
Francisco for Army active duty. After a short stint teaching at Miami-Dade Community College I went for a
PhD at Washington State. I also got married, and, although the marriage didn’t last, I am the proud father of two
daughters and have six grandchildren. From 1966 to 1999 I was a faculty member at California State University,
Chico. I taught American literature and history, developed and ran the University’s international programs, and
initiated and directed the Technical Writing Program, which became near and dear to my heart as all of its
graduates found excellent jobs. I retired from the Army as a full colonel after thirty plus years as a Ready
Reservist, including ten at HQ, 6th Army, San Francisco. My wife Joan is a theatrical lighting designer who
specializes in opera.

Immediately after graduation I signed with the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Org. Enjoyed a 4-year “Bull Durham”
career and moved on to the corporate world with Johnson & Johnson for 8 years, living in Mass., Ohio, and Long
Island. Joined The Simmons Co. in 1971, attended Wharton School and Univ. of Toledo for Executive training
and became Exec. V.P. of a Sheller-Globe Corp. Co. in 1978. I met my incredible wife, Bella, in NYC; married
for 33 years, no children. Began ALLE’ Ltd, a start-up company, in 1988 and sold it in 2006. Bella and I are
both retired (she was program director, New York State Arts Council) and now divide our time between N.J. and
Kiawah, SC. Play lots of golf but gave up skiing and tennis after having both knees replaced. Looking forward to
seeing everyone in May.

Boring life here, same kind of job for 50 years, same house for 41, same wife for 34, etc. Within a couple of
weeks of graduation started working at the Somerset Messenger-Gazette, followed over the next 49 years by
stints at newspapers and websites in Silver Spring, Md., Washington, D.C., Woodbury, N.J., Trenton and New
York. The least boring were the Daily News, the New York Post and thestreet.com. For a half-dozen years tried to
teach grad students fifth-grade grammar and Davis Test composition at Columbia’s journalism school. Married
Kate Gallison, Douglass ’61, who after our divorce published some mysteries with me as the bad guy, and then
Sally Lane, who writes principally on history, so I should be safe for a few more years. We have the two best
sons imaginable (i.e., one fixes my computers, the other my plumbing) and five grandchildren, four of them
teenaged and female.

It was approximately 53 years ago at RU when as a Freshman I was challenged to write a 500 word composition
in English 101. No longer do I have the Davis Book to guide me with grammar and punctuation for this “150
words or less undertaking”. I’ll try. I have always lived on Long Island and since graduation have resided in the
Huntington Area. I have three sons: Craig, Dave, and Ken. I have been married to Carol for the last 17 years and
as a result of this marriage acquired two lovely step daughters. Our children have given us seven grandchildren.
I started my business career in telecommunications and retired in 1998 from Siemens Communications.
Fortunately, I have been in good health, and I keep active with tennis, skiing, swimming, and kayaking. I have
also remained close friends with several RU classmates that live on Long Island. Looking forward to seeing
everyone at the 50th.

After my great RU education, I went slightly north (physics A.M. '61, Columbia), then slightly west (M.D. '65, U
of Penn), then really west (Medicine residency, Stanford), then back east again (NCI, NIH fellowship), and
finally far west (Stanford, immunology fellowship). Having achieved education saturation, I then joined the
Stanford Med School faculty to direct the Blood Banking and transplantation tissue typing programs, keeping
busy with a professionally gratifying mix of research publications, teaching, committee work for Stanford/NIH/
professional societies, and clinical service until retiring in '07. In Med School, met and married Rhoda Burns,
RN, who is still beautiful after all these years. We've been blessed with 3 daughters (an RN, an MD and a PhD
geologist) and 9 grandchildren we're trying to spoil. Living in northern CA has been fantastic; great weather,
sports, people, food. The problem with retirement is not enough time to do all I want to do!

After graduating from Rutgers, I received an M.S. from Lehigh in 1961. Following Lehigh, I joined the Peace
Corps, serving two years in Nigeria, teaching mathematics and physics. While in Nigeria, Brynne and I married.
We then traveled around the world and returned the USA in 1964 when I began my doctorate at Columbia, which
I received in 1968. We spent a year in Princeton where I did post-doctoral work, then started my teaching and
research career at the University of South Carolina. After eight years in South Carolina we moved to White
Plains, NY where we remain today. Here in Westchester County I worked for Ciba-Geigy. In 1983 I returned to
teaching at Manhattan College where I retired in 2006. We now spend weekends in NYC, visiting museums
and attending theater and concerts.

I thought that Air Force Cadet training was the absolute limit that a human mind and body could endure. But that
was before I enrolled in the Rutgers five-year engineering program and fell under the sway of Professors
Rosenthal, Longo, Newton, Fisch, and Potter. Remember when Della Torre walked us through the derivation of
Einstein's E=mc squared. Or was I hallucinating? Our slide rules sizzled for the full fifty minutes allowed for a
mid-term or a final. (What's a slide rule, Grandpa?) I was involved in many cutting edge aerospace programs for
thirty plus years. Created some interesting gadgets, perhaps the most significant was a digital circuit for
compressing data so that less transmission bandwidth would be required or alternatively more info could be
squeezed into a given bandwidth. Will be married to the same long suffering spouse for 56 years in March of
'09. I'll be 80 the following April.

Since graduation in 1959 as one of three philosophy majors, went to Columbia Graduate School, went into the
US army as a private for two years in Germany, came out, started painting, drawing, writing, got married to a
German girl, went to Cooper Union, left, went to Southern Illinois University for MFA in 1965. At Rutgers with
tutelage of Allan Kaprow and Hilli Kaiser, Joe Neyer, Mason, I developed my talent in art and philosophy as a
career in painting, sculpture, poetry, art and aesthetics part-time teaching and writing. Married, divorced, remarried, have a daughter 40 and a son 9 ½. (My wife is an architect from Japan..) Rutgers science, art, and
philosophy, unforgettable teachers and dear friends helped me create the foundation of my rich and ongoing
productive life.

After Rutgers I attended the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis
on developmental and social processes in "normal" humans. Then I spent thirty years in the psychology
department (three terms as chair) at California State University, Sacramento. My teaching areas included death
and dying, human sexuality and HIV/AIDS and thereby combined both professional and personal interests. In
1983 I helped establish the peer counseling group of the Sacramento AIDS Foundation. Living in the state
capital, I became directly involved with various lobbying groups. Upon retirement in 1996, I moved to Vail, AZ,
where I am now a volunteer with Primavera (which assists homeless and low income individuals), the local
LGBTQ center, and the Vail School District. For these activities, I was recently honored with a prestigious
award. I am in good health, having survived cancer twice, am enjoying retirement, but can no longer ski.
Hempel, Kenneth. 3 Arlington Avenue, Kensington, CA 94707 (510) 524-2023.
At Berkeley as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, I won NDFL Training, Center for Slavic Studies, and Ford
Foundation support. I taught at UNCF Wiley College (think The Great Debaters) and at Lincoln University. I
was a finalist for an IIE Yugoslavia-USA grant, published in Serbian, introduced American folk music on
Yugoslav radio, translated English plays for Serbian theatre, taught at the International School, and tutored
Princess Fatima of Afghanistan. At Ann Arbor, NSF supported, I tested The Statistical Package for the Social
Sciences. I taught in the Graduate School at the University of Arkansas, and worked for USAFE teaching Soviet
politics to Air Force officers. I edited the medical protocols of the Berkeley Free Clinic, was a finalist for Federal
Employee of the Year for Community Service, served as Admissions Chair for the S F Bay Area Combined
Federal Campaign, and founded the Ken Hempel Fund for the Arts.

My career(s) can be summed up as "Trains, Planes, and Automobiles." Working on several railroads over six
years paid my way at Rutgers. This was followed by a six-year military career in the USAF, including three years
in France. Finally, I worked as a Transportation Planner over 37 years in the metropolitan transportation
organization for the NYC region. I enjoyed this greatly and believe I made significant contributions in planning
for travel improvements. I earned a MS in Transportation Planning & Engineering at Polytech in NY. My life has
a spiritual dimension that I treasure, a gift from God, described by St. John (Ch. 3, v.16). It had great meaning to
me before attending Rutgers, during my student years, and has continued throughout my life, despite the ups and
downs. Of the many fond memories of Rutgers, my friends at the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship were
outstanding.

Following graduation, served time in the NJ National Guard, then spent nearly 20 years with Sears, mostly in
their catalog division. After a short stint in real estate, my wife, Gail, and I purchased a motel on Cape Cod. In

keep busy here with community service and travel.

headquartered in Lancaster Pa. for the next 34 years retiring in 1996. My positions were in Human Resources in
various locations finishing my career as an Industrial Relations Manager at the corporate level. We have 2
children and 2 grandchildren. I enjoy playing tennis, sports especially football- RU, Penn State and the Steelers,
outdoor activities, church and volunteer opportunities.

After 45 years as a pediatrician I finally bit the bullet and retired at the end of August. I am currently in Oakland
Park, Florida. I have arrived and have plans to work as a volunteer pediatrician if I can work out the paper work. I
am also planning to spend time reading and "beaching." My wife passed away 13 years ago and I have made
many friends both up North and in Florida. My daughters and their families remain behind just north of Boston.
Three granddaughters and two grandsons (the older two first cousins were Bar/Bat Mitzvah in August.)
I have many things to be thankful for as I begin a new adventure in my life and a number of Rutgers '59 buddies

After graduating from Rutgers College of Engineering in Ceramics (now Material Science), I began work at Bell
Labs in June of 1959. My wife Judith and I married a year later. I received a Masters Degree in 1964 and a PhD
in 1967. In 1981 I started my own business in optical fiber manufacturing, Spectran Corporation. Judith
earned Chartered status as a Property Casualty Underwriter and Insurance Councilor 1988 and 1989, respectively.
She started her own insurance agency in 1984 and a local women's support group, Woman in Business, in 1985.
Judith sold her agency and retired as President in 1997. I retired as Chairman and CEO of Spectran in 1998. A
year later the company was sold to Lucent Technologies and subsequently to Furukawa USA. Judith and I
continue to enjoy traveling and spending time with our children and grandchildren, all of whom are doing well.

Salute ‘59ers, from “Hop-a-long” (ski accident, Apr. '59). (Hi, Don Block!) May make 60th reunion! Great skiing
1965-69 – lived in Dijon, France, engineering farm machinery, but downhill after that. Injured spinal column
lifting heavy wt. and by 1970 big problems: gut gurgling, heart pounding, head buzzing, no sleep. Three
hospitalizations by 1978 and 3 "diagnoses" (they don't listen!) including "brain aneurysm" (bleeding in spinal
cord and I knew it). By 1987 I got the real diagnosis: I had snapped soft ligaments which calcified to "spears"
against the spinal cord which poke into nerves if I lift, bend, twist. Literature describing condition from
Japan. Then, 1994: car accident = bad neck injury and even more sleep deficit. Otherwise, excellent health! Last
10 years applying for a patent. The patent attorneys were crap and the "examiner" clueless, as were most of my
"doctors." Some problems here, dear old Rutgers!

Dear Fellow ‘59ers, Fifty years ago I was involved in helping to spread information about the Bahá’í Faith, the
world religion established by the latest Manifestation of God Bahá’u’lláh (Glory of God). I continue to do so,
currently as the secretary of the Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Puerto Rico. Two quotes from the Glory of
God: “That which the Lord hath ordained as the sovereign remedy and mightiest instrument for the healing of all
the world is the union of all its peoples in one universal Cause, one common Faith.” “Wert thou to consider this
world, and realize how fleeting are the things that pertain unto it, thou wouldst choose to tread no path except the
path of service to the Cause of thy Lord. None would have the power to deter thee from celebrating His praise,
though all men should arise to oppose thee.” Feel free to investigate further!

Upon graduation I joined the Air Force to fulfill my AFROTC obligation. Having been assigned to the Air
Rescue Service in Honolulu, our main assignment was to find the Mercury and Gemini astronauts when they
landed in the South Pacific. In 1965 I decided to go to law school and graduated in 1968. I joined Gibson, Dunn
and Crutcher in Los Angeles where I practiced antitrust law for 30 years, living in New York and Los Angeles.
Then in 1998 I realized my life-long dream and bought a farm in New Hampshire. I was elected to the New
Hampshire House of Representatives in 2004 and 2006, and have just completed my second term. I decided in
2008 not to run again and instead devote my time to non-profit work, including a 501(c) (3) I formed called P2P
(Person to Person) where my wife Anne and I assist the disabled and disadvantaged.

Two years before graduation I married Alice Wietry, a secretary in the Ceramics Department where I worked
part-time on campus. After graduation, we drove to Tucson, AZ where I had a position with Hughes Aircraft Co.
When we arrived, it was much hotter than Jersey but very dry. Now we love it! I stayed with Hughes for 28 years
starting with Field Service where I would go to various Falcon missile sites nationwide and abroad and help solve
problems. Later I wrote Technical Manuals and then went into Test Equipment design for the Phoenix and Tow
Missile programs. I retired in 1987, did consulting in PCs, and even worked part-time for the Government,
training census takers and sometimes going out and knocking on doors myself. Alice blessed me with two boys
and two girls who in turn gave us 10 grandchildren.

In 1962 I ventured out to Southern California, arriving in Los Angeles with no job and a Nash Rambler worth
less than the loan on it; in other words, I was bankrupt and too afraid to declare! My career path has been Sales,
Sales Management, Division Management, Regional Management, and Ownership of Jones & McGeoy Sales,
Inc. I retired in 2002 from the electronics components Manufacturers’ Representative industry. I worked for
Avnet, Inc., a Fortune Five Hundred Company, as a Regional Manager. There were four divisions reporting to me
when I ventured into co-founding my rep firm. In 1986 we started with no sales; by 1996 we passed the $200
million mark. In retirement, I am pastor and co-founder of a nondenominational church called Gracious Giver
Church. I work with ex-prisoners, mostly addicts and alcoholics, helping them learn how to live life properly. I
am completely satisfied with my career experiences and retirement choices.

As RU memories ripen, I'm deeply grateful for: friends like John Bauer, Bob Gasser, Alan Schreihofer
(wonderful job, Alan!), others; Soup's Glee Club; for the "lean dean" Howard Crosby; Phi Sigma Kappa's
beginnings (no hazing, no discrimination); English profs like Bezanson, French, Young, and the provocative John
Ciardi; for the dazzling Billy Austin (9 cheerleaders crammed into my '51 Austin auto for half-time
homecoming,'58); RU's wonderful diversity; Episcopal chaplain Clarence Lambelet. After Army, went to General
Seminary, NYC. Married Bronda, thankfully; two children (Jennifer RC'89) and Kirk, three grands. Served
Trinity Cathedral, Newark mid-60's - heard MLKJr at DC and Selma (Go Barack and Michelle!!); also Fair
Lawn, 10 years; Short Hills, 4; Bernardsville, 18. Had very few rough spots yet am awed by those who may have
endured many. Thanks for tolerating my immaturities back then; some modest improvements since, maybe.
Current interests: biking, sailing, snow shoveling; soup kitchen/food pantry; United Nations Association.

After graduation I joined the Navy and went to flight school in Pensacola. Since the draft was still in effect it
seemed like a better choice than being a "grunt." My first tour of duty was with a Patrol Squadron here in
Brunswick. I spent four years chasing Soviet subs and merchant ships around the North Atlantic and
Mediterranean. Second tour of duty was back to Pensacola as a flight instructor. Left the Navy in June 1967 and
went with TWA. Flew with TWA for 29 years along with a number of other Rutgers Alumni including Hank
Goetz, Jay Berman, Marty Sobel and Bill Fritchie. Retired to the farm in 1996 to use some of the knowledge I
gained at Cook College. (Own and operate a 200-acre Black Angus cattle farm here in Brunswick.) Married to
the same lovely woman for 43 years with 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Life has been good.

diagnostics companies; divisions of pharmaceutical companies and start-ups. Retired as CEO of IRIS

talents, accept responsibility, work hard and as an offspring of their success, give back to the community. I
remain active in local government (Planning Commissioner), on the Dean’s Leadership Council at Rutgers
Camden, and on the Boards of two start-up companies. Rutgers opened its doors in 1951 to a young kid who had
nothing and kept them open thru 1959 while he served in the U.S. Army and married and fathered two children. I

After graduation, I went on to get MS and PhD degrees in geology. From 1965 to 1993 I worked in oil, gas and
uranium exploration and production for first Exxon and then Everest Minerals. Since 1993, I have had a
successful geologic consulting business. In 1992 I bought a beautiful, old territorial ranch (4,000 acres) in Bates
Hole, just south of Casper, WY. We ran a Black Angus cow/calf operation for 12 years. Not much profit, a lot of
work, but great fun. Finally, in 2005, I got too old and too lazy and sold the ranch; moved to Yantis in East
Texas, and live on 10 acres on Lake Fork. In the above time frame, I managed to get married a couple of times
and have 3 wonderful daughters, 2 super stepchildren and 4 grandkids, all of whom I am very close to and see
often between fishing and consulting.

It’s hard to think it is 50 years, but here we all are writing about it. After graduation my wife, Rosalie, and I took
a belated honeymoon driving across the US in our ‘56 Chevy, which my son wishes we still had. We got back in
time for me to report to Fort Eustis, VA, where I spent two years as HQ Company Commander and Battalion
Supply Officer of the 714th Railroad Operating Battalion. Then I started my career as an Insurance Agent, and
still am, in Wayne NJ. We just celebrated out 50th wedding anniversary, in Bermuda. We have two children:
Howard, who is in the agency with me, and Lauren, who lives in Colorado and, would you believe, also works in
insurance. We have one granddaughter, Talia, also in Colorado.

Great to hear from you. Pat and I will be married 46 years on Jan. 12th. It doesn't seem possible. I retired from
Shell Oil Co. September 1994 after 28 years. My wife and I live in Sarasota, Florida and operate “Used Book
Heaven” in Siesta Key Village on Siesta Key. We've been in business for 14 years and love every minute. I am
very active in the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce doing volunteer work helping tourists. Still singing (in the
church choir). We've been on 15 cruises since retiring. When you live in paradise, there is nowhere else to go.
Thanks to the Glee Club and "Soup" Walter for developing an interest and small talent in music that I didn't know
I had. Music is still my main pastime–especially Broadway shows. I do a lot of walking and keep on top of local
issues. The store keeps Pat and me pretty busy, especially between Christmas and Easter, our high season. Hope
to see you all if we can get up there in May.

I attended Rutgers after serving four years in Naval Aviation. I married Phyllis Farber after my freshman year.
My major was Ceramic Engineering. After graduation I obtained my MBA, worked for several large corporations and eventually developed and manufactured proprietary construction products for many years. For the last
14 years I have been a consultant. My wife of 41 years, Phyllis, was a successful attorney in New Jersey, but she
lost her ten year battle with cancer in 1997. I have four children and 12 grandchildren, and in 2004 I married
Tama Bruder, a widow whose husband had been a member of Rutgers Class of 1952 and who is a talented artist.
This year we have moved permanently to Boynton Beach, Florida, but still spend our summers in New Jersey and
visiting our children and grandchildren in Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. At the request of
my children I wrote my autobiography which they are publishing.

After graduation I married and was commissioned in the Army Medical Service Corps. Following three years of
military service, I received a Master of Science in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. The next 38 years
were spent in water resources management with the Delaware River Basin Commission, staring as an engineer,
retiring in 2001 as Senior Advisor. My wife and I moved back to the Jersey shore where she had grown up and
we have summered each year. We have three children and two grandchildren. Our daughter Barbara PollisonBeck is a Loyal Daughter of Rutgers. We spend most of the summer on the beach. This summer we will celebrate
our 50th wedding anniversary. We enjoy travel, finding a warm place to visit each February. We are both active in
our church where we have been members for over 40 years.

After graduation I joined Airborne Instruments Laboratory, AIL, in Long Island NY, did graduate studies at
Brooklyn Poly and embarked on a rewarding 47-year career in Aerospace Engineering. After 10 years at AIL, I
was offered a job in California, northwest of LA, and moved my family west in pursuit of my pot of gold. Now
retired, I live happily with my wife Beverly near a manmade lake in Westlake Village. We have four married
daughters, three live in California but not close to us and one in Virginia, and four young grandchildren. We keep
busy visiting them, traveling for pleasure, skiing in the winter and scuba diving when we are near warm waters.
Lately I am into biking to stay in shape. I am looking forward to our reunion and reestablishing old friendships, I
have not been back on campus since graduation. See you in New Brunswick.

After graduation thanks to good Rutgers preparation, I went to the School of Veterinary Medicine at U of Penn
and graduated in 1963. Then I was at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital of the ASPCA in NYC as Intern in 1963,
a Surgical Resident in 1964-65, Head of the Dept of Surgery in 1968, then Hospital Director in 1978-1994.
Afterwards I took a semi-retirement job at Monmouth SPCA until Dec 2005. I also had a 34-year career with the

102 Armor, the “Essex Troop on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. In 2006 we relocated to NC and joined an
American Legion where most members are from the NYC area. During the recent Rutgers bowl game our
Calabash Legion bar probably had the only North Carolinians cheering for the Scarlet Knights. Go Rutgers!

because of my deferred ROTC requirement I went into the Air Force. I was stationed at Robins AFB, Georgia,
and later at Incirlik AB, Turkey. I left the active Air Force in 1965, but stayed in the reserves, and began the
practice of law in Hackensack. I have been there ever since. I married Linda Curto in 1968 and we have two

jumped to Colonial Penn in Phila, and after another 13 did my programming for consulting companies. Married
Mary Dake Smith (Deedee) in 1980. She is known as Deedee to differentiate her from her mother Mary Dake

Virginia University. In 1964 I joined the Diamond Shamrock Corp. to do pesticide development work. I had the
opportunity to travel to 45 countries on 6 continents. It was wonderful to see the places I had read about in
school and have someone pay me to do it. Then, in 1978 I joined ICI Americas Inc. to manage a chemical
regulatory group. We were responsible for dealing with EPA (industrial chemicals and pesticides), FDA (food
additives) and OSHA (MSDSs) matters. Since 1992 I have had a chemical regulatory consultant practice to
provide services to both domestic and international clients. My wife (49 years) and I live on a farm in Delaware

In 1984 I was on active duty as director of public affairs for the Air Force Reserve command at Robins AFB, GA,
and our kids were still in high school. I retired from the Air Force in 1987, and Cyndy and I moved to the big city
(Atlanta). I planned a second career in PR, but ended up (long story) as a sales manager with Macy’s for 9 years,
until I retired for real. Since then, Cyndy and I have traveled as much as time and budget allow, volunteered for
the community and theatre (I’m on the board of the Tony award winning Alliance Theatre; Cyndy is on the board
of a smaller theatre) and watched our children and grandchildren grow. Son Derek and wife Ann, both
neuroscientists, are on the faculty of the Medical College of GA and have two children; daughter Marisa, a
historian, and husband Pat, a neuroscientist, are on the faculty of Oregon State; they have one son.

Spent my career in the apparel business, primarily with the Manhattan Shirt Co. Watched Manhattan grow from
$15 million to a half billion dollar company—only to end up in bankruptcy four years after being acquired with
junk bonds. How American! Got married later than most (1972) to Betty. All those early single years were filled
with ski weekends in Vermont and sailing on Long Island Sound in the summer. After the birth of our daughter,
Lauren, moved from Manhattan to Larchmont, NY. Soon our second daughter, Ali, was born and we remained in
Larchmont for 26 years. Left the metro New York area in 2003 for a life split between summers at Chautauqua,
NY and winter in West Palm Beach, FL. The skiing that was once my passion has been replaced by golf and
more golf, plus a little tennis and bridge. Feel great and I couldn’t be happier!

After graduation, I went into the Air Force working 22 years in logistics with great assignments in the U.S.A.,
Germany, England, and at that time not so great Vietnam. Met and married Carolyn in 1960 after a whirlwind six
week romance and have two wonderful children and three awesome grandchildren. I retired from the Air Force
after a four-year assignment at the Pentagon. Upon my retirement, I worked for various government contractors
managing both Air Force and Navy logistics contracts in the Northern Virginia area. Having grown up at the
Jersey Shore, my heart longed to be at the beach, so in 1992 Carolyn and I made our escape and moved to Hilton
Head Island, SC. We enjoy the beach, peace, warm weather, golf, and a few “drinks” with our RU alumni friends
at a local pub watching RU football.

After college I became a lawyer and practiced at the Jersey Shore. In 1970, I let my crew cut grow out and moved
to New Mexico, where I served for four years as Chief Tribal Judge for the Pueblo of Laguna, the largest of New
Mexico’s Pueblo Indian tribes. I also directed a US Justice Department study that produced a five-volume
publication entitled Justice and the American Indian. On the move again, I landed just north of San Francisco
and spent 20 years in publishing. For the last ten years, I’ve been ghostwriting. I write several books each year —
mainly on business — and have written for notables including Donald Trump and Jay Conrad Levinson (the

After getting my LLB at Harvard and a stint at two large law firms, I joined the Nursing Home Prosecutors
Office as Deputy in charge of investigations into political activity and nursing homes. In 1980 I returned to
private practice, concentrating in securities litigation, mostly on behalf of investors, and commercial litigation.
Currently, I am lead counsel in a class action against Bear Stearns, now JP Morgan Chase. Twelve years ago I
married again, this time to Anna Kozoulina, who is a tax counsel at the IRS. One son; one stepdaughter. I enjoy
examining 16th and 17th century maps, which appear to be based on much earlier maps. The Explorers Club
Journal published my article on maps showing Antarctica and Northern Greenland without ice at the coasts. I
have recently completed another article on the Champlain Maps of Hudson Bay, concluding that they are
consistent with geography that existed about 3500 years ago.

To paraphrase Thornton Wilder’s stage manager in Our Town: one day it’s June 3rd, 1959, and the next thing
you know it’s May15th, 2009. At Rutgers I benefited from the G.I. Bill. I was an English major and that served
me well, because it was there that I developed the ability to express myself clearly and concisely. I found it was
essential in the various management duties I had at the Kemper Insurance headquarters in Chicago. I dealt with
casualty, fire, life, all parts of insurance and it involved extensive travel nationwide. I retired in 1996 and
subsequently moved to Hot Springs, AR.The one constant in my life during and since Rutgers has been my wife
of 52 years, Joan Trotter, Douglass ’59. We were married at the end of my sophomore year. We had 3 sons and
now three grandchildren, 1 boy and 2 girls.

After four years as a Navy pilot and my vocational goals set, I took off my white silk scarf and sunglasses and
plunged into finishing my BA. In order to get on with my planned graduate school work, I made the great
mistake of accelerating my studies and did not take advantage of the important time due Rutgers friends. I hope
we have name tags this May. Three years at Union Theological Seminary in New York for a BD, three more for a
PhD at St. Andrews, Scotland, a parish in Palisades, NY, teaching at a seminary in Princeton, then tripping
lightly along the precipice of insolvency as head of the National Council for Children and Television, then
similarly for Religion in American Life. And now the important info: Married Marcia fifty years ago. Fathered
Karen, Jennifer, Sarah, and Rebecca. Add four sons-in-law and seven grandchildren. Life is good.

After Rutgers I became an electronic engineer at ITT Labs in Nutley NJ. The age of the transistor was just
coming into full bloom, and this provided me with an opportunity to design transistorized pulse and digital
circuits for various government projects. Angela and I soon married. We had a son and two daughters. (Now we
have two lovely grand daughters.) In 1964, we moved to Saugerties NY located at the base of the Catskill
Mountains, land of Rip Van Winkle, and I began my next 40 years of learning at IBM in both technical and
managerial positions. Assignments included manufacturing engineering, computer architecture, cryptography,
and mainframe performance evaluation. Outside of work I played softball, volleyball, tennis, and golf, and also
skied. Angie and I traveled, and we frequently vacationed with our family at our Jersey Shore home. Now retired,
we spend time in New York and New Jersey but enjoy winters in Florida.

Theological Research Institute www.ankerberg.org My perspective is old earth creationist (the day-age view). I
invite classmates to peruse the archived posts and comment on the blog email link. In recent years I have also
dialogued with many authors, columnists, scientists, educators, and clergy on a variety of issues, with heavy
emphasis on science and theology.

After working in the NJ ceramic industry 30 years, a career change took our family to Indiana, then North
Carolina the next 13 years, primarily working in building and grounds maintenance. My wife and I returned to NJ
in 2002 to be near our daughter’s family. Our two granddaughters are now 9 and 11. “Like it or not,” the
struggling economy forced me into involuntary retirement in December 2008.

Hope everybody is okay. As for me, retired 1/1/09 as dean and rector of an Episcopal cluster centered in
Watertown. Taught philosophy, comparative religion, and ethics for twenty years prior at JCC, a small corner of
the very big SUNY system. Loved it. Anne and I have four kids, three grandkids. Time has been kind; have
received some nice honors, and have been able to serve town and gown and pew. Learned a few things, too. I
once thought success was measured in terms of achievement; people up here taught me that success is really
measured in terms of relationship. I am grateful for their gentle wisdom, and grateful for having shared the Banks
with all of you way back when. Take care. Jerry

––––––––––––––– On the Banks of the Old Raritan [Go to http://nbpweb.rutgers.edu/songs/onthebanks.shtml to listen to Rutgers songs.] My father sent me to old Rutgers, And resolv'd that I should be a man; And so I settled down, In that noisy college town, On the banks of the old Raritan. Then sing aloud to Alma Mater And keep the scarlet in the van' For with her motto high Rutgers' name shall never die On the banks of the old Raritan. (Chorus) (Chorus) On the banks of the old Raritan (my friends) Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand, For has she not stood Since the time of the flood, On the banks of the old Raritan. On the banks of the old Raritan (my friends) Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand, For has she not stood Since the time of the flood, On the banks of the old Raritan. Albert Charles Homer, 5/8/2001
