A selection of books and articles published by Webster faculty:
Dr Mehdi Amineh & Dr Henk Houweling
Two Webster-Leiden professors together published Central Eurasia in Global
Politics: Conflict, Security, and Development (International Studies in Sociology
and Social Anthropology, 2005). Dr Amineh (see below) earlier published
Globalisation, Geopolitics and Energy Security in Central Eurasia and the
Caspian Region (2003) and is currently working on his new title: Towards the
Greater Middle East: social science perspective on the changing geography of
the world politics (Forthcoming: Brill Academic Publishers).
Dr Mehdi Amineh
Dr Mehdi Parvizi Amineh’s latest publication (2010) on The Globalization of
Energy: China and the European Union was co-edited by Prof. Yang Guang and
published by Brill Publishers. It also includes a contribution by Webster adjunct
faculty member Eva Rakel and explores the policy area of energy supplies and
energy security. Also published in 2010 was State, Society, and International
Relations in Asia (M.Parvizi Amineh, ed), a collection of research papers, at
Amsterdam University Press.
Dr Warren Rosenblum
Dr Rosenblum teaches courses on the History of Human Rights, Prejudice and
Discrimination, The Nazi Era, and The History of Crime and Punishment. His book
Beyond the Prison Gates: Punishment and Welfare in Germany 1850-1933 was
published in 2008 by the University of North Carolina Press and won the BakerBurton Prize from the Southern Historical Association. His new research concerns
a case of judicial anti-Semitism and the crisis of the German legal system during
the Weimar Republic.
Dr Kelly-Kate Pease
Pease is a noted international relations scholar who has published extensively in
areas related to human rights. Her book International Organizations: Perspectives
on Global Governance is currently in its fourth edition, and the co-authored book
The United Nations and Changing World Politics is in its sixth. Pease’s current
research project focuses on the impact of Joint Criminal Enterprise – a legal
doctrine for prosecuting war crimes – as a mode of legal liability for holding leaders
accountable for gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian
law.
Dr Chris Parr
Dr Parr is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies who has an expertise
in the religions of East Asia. He is currently writing a book with the working title The
Double-Edged Sword of Religion in Political Conflicts, which explores case studies
including Israel and the Middle East, the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s,
Japan and Zen from the Meiji to Hiroshima, and (Northern) Ireland.
Dr Parr also recently published a collection of poetry Going to find it (2012, The Saint Louis Projects).
Dr Alexandre Vautravers (ed)
After addressing the issue of the Spirit of Geneva (2007), Children at Risk (2008) and
th
Humanitarian Psychology (2010), the 15 edition of the International Humanitarian
Conference organized by Webster University Geneva focused on the topic of Access
to Resources. With contributions from Webster Leiden faculty Dr Peter van Krieken,
Ms Anne de Graaf, and Leiden alumna Erica Pasini.
Dr Bram Boxhoorn
had his article “United States and Europe: an Unequal Partnership” published in:
Perceptions of NATO and the New Strategic Concept, L.N. Rodriguez and V.
Dubovyk (Eds), IOS Press, 2011. Previous publications by Dr Boxhoorn include De
integratie van Europa: een historische balans (co-authored with Max Jansen,
Coutinho Publishers, 1997), and NATO after Kosovo (co-authored with Rob de Wijk
and Niklaas Hoekstra, published by the Royal Netherlands Military Academy, the
Neherlands Atlantic Association, and the Netherlands Institute of International
Relations Clingendael, 2000).
Dr Elisabeth Leembruggen-Kalberg
has been a contributing member of the research Group on International
Perspectives on Governmental Aggression and Peace (GIPGAP) for several years.
She is co-author of a chapter in a book series on State Aggression and the Right
to Peace, published by Praeger Security International in 2009. She also published
“Perspectives on Elder Abuse in Germany” (with J. Koenig in: Educational
Gerontology, Vol 32, nr 1, January 2006, published by Routledge), and most
recently “Psychotraumatology and Spiritual Coping: Suggested Therapeutic
Interventions in the Sri Lankan Context” (Academia.edu, 2013).
Dr Gerard van der Ree
Dr Van der Ree published. Chile’s (Inter)National Identities:Framing the Relations
with Bolivia and Peru in: Bulletin of Latin American Research, 29(2), 208-223, 2010.
His doctoral thesis Contesting Modernities: Projects of Modernisation in Chile,19642006 was published in 2007 by Dutch University Press, Amsterdam.
Dr Helen Duffy
Dr Duffy published The War on Terror and the Framework of International Law, at
Cambridge University Press, 2005. Dr Duffy also wrote ‘Justice in the Balance:
towards a Fair, Effective and Independent International Criminal Court’ published
by Human Rights Watch, New York, 1998. Recent selected articles or chapters

Mr Yossi Mekelberg, MA
Program Director of Webster’s London International Relations program at
Regent’s University, Yossi Mekelberg is also an Associate Fellow of the Middle
East Program at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House. In
addition he is a member of the London Committee and Council of Human Rights
Watch. He is also a founding member of the Middle East Economic Forum. Yossi
is a regular contributor to the international media on these issues including BBC,
CNN, Al-Jazeera, CBC, Guardian, Independent . Publications include: 'Israel: A Decade after the War in

Dr Islam Qasem
Head of the Global Politics Department at Webster University, Dr Qasem wrote
his doctoral thesis for Leidsen University in 2010 under the title : Neo-rentier
theory, the case of Saudi Arabia (1950-2000), to be published by Bril Publishers
in 2014. It was also published by Webster University’s in IRWP International
Relations Working Paper Series No.1 (2013). Dr Qasem was political analyst at
The Hague Center for Strategic Studies and wrote several articles for e.g. De
Volkskrant, The Guardian, The New Significance, and Open Democracy. His
current research is for a book on the Role of the US Treasury and World Bank on US Foreign Policy.
Dr Ashley Cole
Ashley wrote her PhD for the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the
University of St Andrews, Scotland, titled : ‘Taking Care with Development, A
Frontier to Peace (2013)’. She is currently collaborating with Dr Islam Qasem
on conducting research on the Role of the US Treasury and World Bank on US
Foreign Policy. Dr Cole is Head of Webster Unjversity’s Global Research

Center in Leiden. Her latest paper, delivered at the 2 Global Conference on

Student Publications
Dr Mavis Donner (ed)
Sparklers is an anthology of poetry and short stories by Webster University
(Leiden) students who took Dr Donner’s interactive creative writing classes and
were inspired by her to publish the best of their creative output.
Szymon Jagiello and David van der Heyden:
“In the Quagmire of Failed States”, published in Tuft’s University Hemispheres,
Tufts Journal of International Affairs, February 2010. A new article by Szymon and
David on the Arab Spring is forthcoming in the Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs.
Szymon recently received an honorable mention in the “Peace through Strength”
Essay Contest of the American Security Council Foundation. Publication of one of
his other articles is forthcoming in the Yonsei University International Affairs
Review.
Rosabelle Illes
Heralded as one of the most talented young poets and performers of the Island of
Aruba, Webster Leiden psychology major Rosabelle Illes (23) recently published
Spiel di mi Alma (2010, “Mirror of my Soul”), poetry in Papiemento. In 2005
Rosabelle published Beyond Insanity, poems in English. A new collection of her
poems and short stories is forthcoming. After her BA in psychology from Webster
Leiden, Rosabelle continued into the Masters of psychology program of Leiden
University and has now been accepted for her PhD studies at that institution.
Hemayel Martina
Webster International Relations major Hemayel Martina († 2011) presented his
collection of poetry Ansestro Preokupá (Worried Ancestor) in October 2010 at the
International School of Willemstad (Curaçao). In his 39 interrogative poems
Hemayel honors the ancestors who contributed to the development and life of
Curaçao. The poems inspire youth in general to contribute to the Papiemento
literature and is an incentive for young writers.
Dr Peter van Krieken (ed)
Webster Leiden students Kirk Grimmer, Erik Palinsky, and Monique Besseling
contributed to Health, Migration and Return: A Handbook for a Multidisciplinary
Approach (Asser Press, 2001) edited by their professor Peter van Krieken. Other
contributions by WHO and IOM experts, this publication was based on a global
conference organized by the Dutch Ministry of Justice / Immigration Services (IND).
Righting Wrongs : A Journal of Human Rights
The Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at Webster University
publishes a global, peer-reviewed undergraduate journal (2011) that allows
students to explore international human rights issues. Recent student contributors
include : Rebecca Chan (Columbia University), Erica Lindegren (New College of
Florida), Jennifer Lunney (Webster University St. Louis), Sophia Moradian (Boston
College), Hannah Woerner (New College of Florida), and Valerie Zwart (Webster

Prof dr Jean Paul van Marissing
Co-editor of the Weekly online Newsletter on Competition Law, Dr Van Marissing
held the chair EU Competition Policy at Nyenrode Business University (2005-2010),
and was a partner with two American law firms, Baker & McKenzie and Howrey
(1996-2007). Before he became a lawyer, he represented the Dutch Government to
the European Union in Brussels (1993-1996) and was a business consultant for the
Euro Info Centre (1988-1993). He is currently director for Webster University Leiden.
Dr Arie Barendregt
Do Small Enterprises Study Competitors is the main research question in Dr
Barendregt’s DBA publication (VDM Verlag, 2011): A Case Study Analysis of the
Competitor Study by Dutch Business-to-Business Small Enterprises.
Mr Jan Kooiman, MA
Webster professor Jan Kooiman co-authored the CMA (Certified Management
Accountant) study books Part 1 Management Accounting and Part 2 Corporate
Finance. The CMA is delivered at our WTC Amsterdam Graduate Studies Center
and in-house at clients such as Caterpillar France (Grenoble).
Dr Kilian Wawoe
Dr Wawoe’s most recent work is Bonus: Een Nederlandse Bankier Vertelt (De Bezige
Bij, 2010), based on his doctoral research at the VU Free University of Amsterdam.
He was commentator in the primetime Dutch TV show De Wereld Draait Door,
September 2011: http://dewerelddraaitdoor.vara.nl/media/71694. Dr Wawoe also
delivered one of the lectures for TEDx Curacao in 2011.

Michael Doorn is director of Ecoawareness Center and the author of two books that
deal with our deeper relationship to the world, and numerous academic and policy

Dr Mary Hong
Mary Hong (PhD English and American Literature, Johns Hopkins University) has a

2013. Before that, Dr Lusini co-edited “Romance languages and Linguistic Theory:
Selected Papers from Going Romance 2010, Leiden” together with Irene Franco and
Andrés Saab at Johan Benjamins Publishing Company, 2012. Another article from her
