Writing a Family History
(Contributed by J. A. Hilton)
Once a family's history h a sbeen discovered, i t should b e written and
published. Just asg o o d local history is of general interest, because local a n d
general history can i l l u m i n a t e each other, s o f a m i l y history can b e o f m o r e
general interest. T h e w o r k of the microhistorians, p r e - e m i n e n t l y G i n z b u r g ,
demonstrate the relationship between the particular a n d the general.
S c h o l a r l y h i s t o r y uses notes t o cite i t s evidence. A l t h o u g h d i f f e r e n t
publishers and journals have their o w n house-styles, there a r e certain
general conventions. F o r b o o k s a n d articles, the author, the title, the date o f
publications, and the relevant page numbers should b e given. For original
manuscripts, the n a m e and location o f the repository and the names o r

F a m i l y history needs to b e placed i n the local a n d socio-economic contexts.

Catholic f a m i l y history s h o u l d concentrate o nthe functions o f religion i n
