Christian Survival Khmer: 20 Simple Lessons by Lynn Thigpen Cooperative Services International (CSI) wlthigpen@mailcentral.biz Copyright 2006 Permission granted to copy for educational purposes ONLY. NOT for resale or profit. Just like Survival Khmer, Christian Survival Khmer was written with you, the English speaker, in mind. You don’t have to be able to read the Khmer script in order to learn Christian vocabulary, but this manual contains the script so that your tutor or other language resource person can help you. The Khmer words are also expressed in English phonetics. But don’t worry! You don’t have to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet or any other new phonetic system. Christian Survival Khmer is designed to reduce your level of stress in introductory language learning. Simply read the phonetics in italics just as you would read English. For example, the Khmer word for here is pronounced tea knee. The Khmer word knee sounds just like the thing that bends in the middle of your leg. And pants? In Khmer, the word is pronounced much like the four-legged animal that gives milk – cow. Many Khmer words sound similar to some of our English words. But not every word is that simple. The Khmer language has more vowel sounds than the English language. Therefore, the phonetics I have written for you in English phonetics sometimes don’t quite do the job. Write yourself a note beside that word or take note of the sound on the CD that accompanies this manual. For example, how much in Khmer is written out phonetically as bpone-mahn. When you see a b and a p together, you need to make a sound like b and p spoken together. (The same is true when you see d and t together.) And notice that mahn is not written man. That’s because the pronunciation is more like the way an Englishman would say man, instead of the American pronunciation. Every time you see a word that looks familiar to you, but contains an additional h, put on a British accent, and you will be fine. There are several other combinations, like the word for to go, which in Khmer sounds a bit like one of those little things at the end of your feet – a toe – but not exactly. It has a little bit of an additional ending vowel sound that is made much like clinching your teeth together. That’s why we’ve written it toe-oo. And that’s why you will see words like die-ee, the word for arm or hand. Say die, then clinch your teeth together on the final ee sound. Christian Survival Khmer: 20 Lessons Copyright 2006 wlthigpen@mailcentral.biz Page 2 of 50 Lastly, you will want to consult the audio CD associated with this resource in order to become better acquainted with the correct pronunciation of the words you are studying. If you do not have the audio CD, please contact us. Christian Survival Khmer is designed to give you the basics for being able to communicate spiritual truth. Beyond these lessons, we urge you to learn the Khmer script in order to read the Bible and learn more for yourself. In addition to this text, for Lessons 17 and 18 you will need the pink Bible Society reader, The Beginning of the World, in Khmer. This resource has also been recorded on an audio CD. Please contact us if you need this CD. May the Lord bless you as you serve Him among Khmer speakers, and may He empower you to share His truth. Note: Every attempt has been made to produce accurate resources. If you find any errors and corrections that need to be made, please contact us. In addition, if you have any helpful suggestions on improving this resource, we are happy to entertain them. Note: Where do you go from here? There are many wonderful resources for continuing to learn biblical Khmer. The Bible is the best resource of all! Make a goal to read a little bit every day in the Khmer Bible and before long, you will see great strides in your ability to read and understand. The old Khmer Bible, as you will discover, has many errors in translation. The newer versions have sought to correct these problems, but you will find that older, more established congregation and pastors still hold on to the “old” Bible. Firm Foundations and other New Tribes resources are great for continued study. Some, such as The Kingdom of God by J.D. Crowley, are written in English and Khmer. In addition, as your listening improves, you might wish to check out the audio CD’s for The Oral Bible School. This curriculum has 4 levels and contains enough lessons/stories in audio format for a Khmer pastor/leader to use one per week for an entire year. (No one can complain they cannot study the Bible because they cannot read. This resource is entirely AUDIO!) Please contact us if you would like this set of resources. You may also want to check out our Christian Survival Khmer Bootcamp, which is a resource outlining how you can take a group through a rapid course of spiritual terms, prayers, songs, etc., in the course of one month. We did this with our team and they loved it! Christian Survival Khmer: 20 Lessons Copyright 2006 wlthigpen@mailcentral.biz Page 50 of 50
