Heritage
At one time, Barnstaple was the only port in the South
West of England...
It’s thought that Barnstaple is the oldest borough in England,
dating back to the 900s. Yet it was the Medieval period that most
defined Barnstaple’s history. Barnstaple’s location and man-made
quays helped the town to become a thriving trading centre and
a base for enterprising merchants to do business with Europe,
Ireland and the New World.
Tobacco, wine and spices were imported and wool and pottery
exported. However the era of prosperity was interrupted in 1642
by the Civil War, during which Barnstaple changed hands four
times. Bullet holes from the resulting skirmishes can still be found
in some of Barnstaple’s historic buildings. Remarkable.

In 1588 Barnstaple helped to defeat the Spanish Armada. Five
ships, manned by Barnstaple men, set sail from the town to join
Sir Francis Drake’s fleet in Plymouth before going into battle. The
rest, as they say, is history.
Barnstaple’s past continues to define its present. The best way to
discover the history of the town is to join one of the guided heritage
trails. They are fascinating. The Barnstaple Heritage Centre, the
Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon and the recently renovated St
Anne’s Chapel are just a few of the gems the town has to offer.
Join a Free guided Heritage Trail Tour taking you on a fascinating
walk through the story of this ancient town. Starting every
Thursday outside the Heritage Centre at 11am, and ending at
Library Square, the tour lasts approximately one hour and covers
the main aspects of Barnstaple’s history. There is no need to book
and the tours will run from the beginning of April throughout the
summer until the end of October.
Barnstaple is at the end of the A361 accessed from the M5 off
junction 27. Trains also run regularly from Exeter St. David’s to
Barnstaple Station.
Parking and facilities
Barnstaple has ample short and long stay car parking, most of
which is Pay and Display along with a Park and Ride Scheme. All car
parking is signposted clearly from the main routes into the town.
We hope you enjoy your visit.

Shopping
Food & Drink
From fashion to florists, Barnstaple’s diversity means you won’t
have to look hard to find something you love...
Foodie? Then you’ll find a lot to love about Barnstaple...
Barnstaple is the shopping capital of North Devon. If you’ve ever
visited, you’ll know why. There are hundreds of shops, from major
high street names to small independent boutiques, plus the historic
Pannier Market. It’s great for shopaholics, bargain hunters and even
get-in, get-out people. Everyone’s welcome.
Easy access, seven days a week, and the odd weekend treat.
Don’t be surprised to see street performers or musicians bringing a
smile to shoppers in the High Street.
In Barnstaple it’s all about creating a fun and pleasant shopping
experience. Most shops follow regular trading hours, which means
you can visit 7 days a week.
There’s plenty of secure, affordable parking in the centre of town
as well as a regular park and ride bus service too.
Coming to Barnstaple?
Getting here
Culture
You know what they say about restaurants: if the locals eat
there then you know it’s good. The thing is, you’re spoilt for
choice in Barnstaple.
The town centre is bursting with fantastic independent
restaurants that are regularly busy with hungry guests. Whether
you savour the flavours of Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian or simply
good old hearty British classics – cooked with the freshest local
produce, of course – you’re sure to find something that will give
your taste buds a treat.
It’s not just the food that makes Barnstaple’s restaurants special.
Some of the town’s top restaurants are located in historic
buildings whose charismatic interiors make them a pleasure to be
in. If you fancy something a little more casual then you’ll also find
plenty of popular chain restaurants to choose from.
So what are waiting for? Come and tuck in - don’t forget to bring
a big appetite...
As the premier town in North Devon you’ll find great bars, great
restaurants and big name high street shopping. But that’s not
what makes Barnstaple special. Not alone. That’s done by the
independent shops and the proud local food producers selling their
delicious delicacies in the Pannier Market and, of course, the town’s
colourful history.
It’s this mix of new and old, of modern and traditional that’s behind
Barnstaple’s charm. We’d love you to share it with us.

Culture vulture? There’s plenty to feast on in Barnstaple!
The town is home to the Queen’s Theatre, a superb 650-seat
theatre that attracts productions and performers of international
reputation. From ballet to stand-up comedy, it’s all here.
Or, if you prefer the screen to the stage, our independent
multi-screen cinema gives you the chance to catch the latest and
greatest films. And yes, there’s popcorn.
You can also find several small art galleries in Barnstaple. The talent
of the local artists is incredible.
Live music or something quieter?
Fancy a drink? So many great bars in such a small space...
Barnstaple has a young and active contemporary music scene, thanks
in part to the excellent music-related degrees taught by the local
college. There’s usually a gig on most nights of the week.
One of the great things about going out in Barnstaple is that
the selection of pubs and bars are all so close to each other.
So whether you fancy a quiet pint after a long day or want to
dress up and hit the cocktails, the perfect place is never far away.
Looking for something a little quieter? Not a problem. Learn
something new at The Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon or visit
Barnstaple Library. It has a huge selection of books and plenty of
spare computers and workspace. There’s free wireless internet too!
Many bars regularly host live bands if you want to check out the
local musical talent. And whisper it, but several pubs have regular
karaoke nights too if you want to swap the wine glass for the
microphone. Come on, everyone’s been there...
