There is a wealth of support for international students at JMU, available from the moment you apply, all the way through your academic career, and beyond. OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS (OIP) The OIP offers a wealth of services, courses and excursions aimed at helping international students adapt and excel at JMU. Programs such as “Conversation Partner” and “International Week” create fun and interesting opportunities for you to make friends and network with students from other cultures. THE JMU LIBRARIES STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER CAREER PLANNING The JMU Libraries include the Carrier Library, the Music Library and Rose Library. JMU librarians work with academic departments to provide subject specific library instruction, research consultation, and to develop collections. The award-winning Information Literacy program provides students with skills for lifelong learning. Opened in September 2014, the center is the newest addition to JMU’s many resources that are dedicated to student success. It houses more than 20 support facilities including the University Health Center, the Office of Academic and Career Planning, and Learning Centers focused on helping students overcome challenges they may face. The Office of Career and Academic Planning sponsors a number of career fair events each year to provide students in all majors with the opportunity to interact with employers and obtain employment-related information. More than 250 companies participated the 2013 Fall career fair. “LIVE” is a program that connects international students with local families, so that you can experience real American home life. “My three years at JMU have been extremely rewarding. I came as an international student seeking help from the English Language Learner Services (ELLS), and transformed into a student employee to help others learn the language and adapt to college life. This campus is full of opportunities. I can’t picture anywhere else that can offer the same experience!” The Career Guide to JMU Majors provides a sampling of career options for each of the majors offered at JMU, together with internship opportunities, characteristics of successful students, and websites for further exploration of potential careers. E-JOURNAL TITLES AUDIO-VISUAL VOLUMES The Practice Interview Program can help you to gain valuable experience interviewing with actual employers without leaving campus. International Student Career Day (ISCD) is a one-day program specifically designed to assist international students who are considering pursuing internships or jobs in the U.S. after graduation. JMU students can also access Interview Stream, a web-based interviewing practice application, to conduct free, online practice interviews with a webcam. Recruit-A-Duke is JMU’s online career services management system that provides you with access to internships, full-time jobs, career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and more. NORTH 38 Welcome to the neighborhood. International students enrolled at JMU through the International Study Center are encouraged to apply for on-campus housing that offers convenience and comfort. However, international students often find that they prefer to live off campus in the luxurious yet affordable and safe housing that Harrisonburg offers just for students. NORTH 38 Due to the large number of students attending JMU each year, the university cannot guarantee on-campus accommodation for everyone. If you are not assigned an on-campus room, or do not want to live on-campus, you can choose from the many off-campus housing options available nearby. Most off-campus housing options offer individual leases and can be arranged online prior to your arrival. At the International Study Center, we recommend the North 38 apartment complex. This residence is located about 4km from campus on a bus route that JMU students can use for free. NORTH 38 Students can choose to book a North 38 apartment through the ISC or an alternative off-campus accommodation on their own. With more than 20 on-campus dining facilities, JMU offers the #2 best campus food in the U.S. – from American and international cuisines, to world-class coffee, desserts and snacks. D-HALL Known by the student population as D-Hall, JMU’s original buffet-style dining hall is an essential visit. It features eight different cuisine areas: Café Roma, Deli, Produce Market, Sizzles, Southern Bistro, Sweets, and Veggie Variations, offering not only a wide selection of savory options, but also a selection of nutritious and vegetarian/vegan alternatives. E-HALL Serving as an east campus sister facility to D-Hall, the East Campus Dining Hall, or E-Hall, is a 700-seat modern buffet-style dining facility that also hosts eight distinct cuisine areas: bakery, bistro, deli, grill, hearth oven, produce market and Tandoori International. TOP DOG CAFÉ Top Dog Café, a food-court style eatery, is a favorite to international students. Four unique venues – Mongolian Grill, Sushi, Madison Bread Company, and Grille Works – offer an international mix of traditional stir fry Asian dishes, sushi and sashimi, signature Italian-style Panini, and a wide variety of American cuisine. FESTIVAL Positioned atop JMU’s east-campus, Festival offers not only an impressive selection of foods but also a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students can find traditional American food as well as authentic Mediterranean and Chinese dishes in this food-court-style dining location. E-HALL RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉS In addition to the selection of dining locations unique to the JMU campus, there is also a vast selection of chain restaurants and cafés that we know and love, including Starbucks, Java City, Chick-fil-A, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Quizno’s.
